While work there is certainly appreciated, you should be aware that only free images are allowed on Wikipedia -- it looks like you're grabbing pictures from various websites, which is not allowed without specific consent, as those websites own the copyright to those pictures. If you have not created this media yourself then there needs to be an argument why we have the right to use the media on Wikipedia (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the media yourself then it needs to be specified where it was found, i.e., in most cases link to the website where it was taken from, and the terms of use for content from that page.

If the media also doesn't have a copyright tag then one should be added. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media qualifies as fair use, consider reading fair use, and then use a tag such as {{Non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair_use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

Well, by direction of Wikimedia Foundation policy, the encyclopedia must be as free as possible. This image is clearly a promotional-like picture and is copyrighted to someone else. The non-free content criteria policy is very strict in regards when non-free images are to be used. If all ten criteria can be met, the image can be used. This image does not meet #1 of the criteria: a free equivalent could be made.

If you want, you can try contacting the copyright holder and ask him or her if they would release the image under a free license. See Wikipedia:Example requests for permission for more details on that. hbdragon88 21:59, 27 July 2007 (UTC)

Non-free images

Please stop re-adding File:Hope Diamond US Mail parcel-1958.jpg to registered mail. Perhaps you are not familiar with the non-free content criteria whereby all non-free image must have a fair-use rationale for each and every use and there is none for this use and I doubt a justification can be made. Besides which all 10 criteria must be complied with and this one easily fail others, particularly #8 because it is not necessary to use this image non-free image to understand that the Hope Diamond was sent by registered mail. ww2censor (talk) 19:19, 1 March 2011 (UTC)

Please stop. "It was approved for use on the Hope Diamond page; why not here?" is not a true statement. It was added to the Hope Diamond and has a fair-use rationale for that use but there is no rationale for this use and under the policy, as I already stated above, it must have a fair-use rationale for each and every use per WP:NFCC; that is policy. Yes I read what it said and it says that it is being used in the Hope Diamond article under a fair-use claim but not in registered mail, so it must be removed. Beside that I doubt the rationale for the Hope Diamond article is valid either, but that is a different issue and I may address that later. I am very experienced with copyright and fair-use problems, so please believe me I know what I am talking about. ww2censor (talk) 19:30, 1 March 2011 (UTC)

Excuse me for not being an experienced expert. If I see an image used in an article, and that image is not removed, and it is furthermore described as "fair-use," please forgive me for assuming that it is in fact fair-use, as I thought the team of experienced editors might have swarmed upon it by now if it was not fair-use. I humbly apologize for reading what was approved by other editors and then assuming it would continue to be approved within the Wiki universe. You're excused! however, you can roll your eyes all you like but I am sure you understand we all had to learn and that sometimes means making mistakes that others then explain to us. I did explain the reason for removal twice in my summary but I don't think you may have understood that. Anyway, Wikipedia's fair-use policy is very specific and stricter than the legal understanding. We try to enforce it as judiciously as possible because the foundation's aim is for as free an encyclopaedia as possible and that means using a few non-free images as possible. Editors don't always find bad uses of image immediately they are uploaded. They require review by experienced editors and sometimes images hang around for years due to looking ok before anyone notices their improper use. You may find it useful to read my image copyright information page that I wrote to explain some of the image copyright problems that occur. This particular image was only uploaded and added to the article 3 days ago so it has really had very little time to be reviewed. Trivia sections are not really something I think is useful to most articles. If something is of notable interest it should be integrated into the general prose while trivia is, as you say, trivial. You're right, and I am sorry about my flippancy in previous comments. You seemed patronizing at first, and I didn't think you had actually looked at the file in question to see the "Fair Use" label that was on it. So tell me, if I take a picture with my cell phone and upload it, does it constitute fair use? Happy to help. Patronizing was not my intention, just education and implementation of proper use. If you take a photo yourself, you can licence it with a free licence such as putting it in the public domain or using one of the free Creative Commons licence tags we approve of. Fair-use is a way of using some copyright images so long as they comply with our strict non-free policy as linked above, but where an image is replaceable we don't accept it, such as copyright images of living people. If your friend takes an image s/he can provide us with his/her permission by giving their WP:CONSENT under a free licence, however, in many instances derivative works (such as photos of paintings or sculptures) are still copyright.
