Could your bot help?

Please look at the discussion about oil barrels. Would your bot be able to tackle km:h and mi:h? I have been using AWB without a bot and it is rather slow for such a large number of articles. Lightmouse (talk) 13:48, 31 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Not at the moment. Maybe this weekend if I program it for an overnight run. —MJCdetroit (yak) 13:51, 31 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
OK. Thanks. I have just counted them:
  • km:h = 861 articles
  • mi:h = 96 articles
Lightmouse (talk) 13:54, 31 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Could you send me the AWB Regex that you are using? It would save me the programming time. —MJCdetroit (yak) 18:25, 31 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
You will find it at:
User:Lightmouse/javascript conversion
For example (view this in edit mode):

//change format of convert template variables ArticleText = Regex.Replace(ArticleText, @"(?i)({convert\|[^}]{1,16}km):h", "$1/h"); ArticleText = Regex.Replace(ArticleText, @"(?i)({convert\|[^}]{1,16}mi):h", "$1/h"); ArticleText = Regex.Replace(ArticleText, @"(?i)({convert\|[^}]{1,16}ft):s", "$1/s"); ArticleText = Regex.Replace(ArticleText, @"(?i)({convert\|[^}]{1,16}m):s", "$1/s");

You may also be interested in the next section in that page:
           //replace other templates with convert template
           ArticleText = Regex.Replace(ArticleText, @"(?i){{mi to km\|(\d{1,9})}}", "{{convert|$1|mi|km}}");
           ArticleText = Regex.Replace(ArticleText, @"(?i){{mi to km\|(\d{1,9})\|round[^\}]{1,5}}}", "{{convert|$1|mi|km}}");
           ArticleText = Regex.Replace(ArticleText, @"(?i){{mi2 to km2\|(\d{1,9})}}", "{{convert|$1|mi|km}}");

ArticleText = Regex.Replace(ArticleText, @"(?i){{mi2 to km2\|(\d{1,9})\|round[^\}]{1,5}}}", "{{convert|$1|mi|km}}");

Lightmouse (talk) 20:05, 31 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
It's running. I thought that there would have been more than 120 pages when I told you I'd do it this weekend. Since there wasn't, I ran it tonight. Most were naval ships converting knots to km/h, so I put mph in there too. Regards, —MJCdetroit (yak) 02:36, 1 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
There were fewer articles because I kept on fixing them. I should have left them alone because it was consuming a lot of my time and your method is quicker. Thanks for doing that. I have been thinking that we should change all instances of the template code from '|knot|' to '|kn|'. This would make the template code consistent with templates for other units (e.g. '|km|'). What do you think? Lightmouse (talk) 09:36, 1 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

(outdent) Honestly, I could care less as long as the output is the agreed upon correct output. However, if you give me the RegEx code, I'll test it and turn the bot loose if it's good. —MJCdetroit (yak) 16:30, 1 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

James Garner

The hook was meant to be misleading. It's April Fool's Day whimsy that the DYK people have been discussing for weeks. House of Scandal (talk) 19:12, 1 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry, I didn't even think about April fool's day. It's good to see that someone still has a sense of humor and just doesn't take everything associated with wikipedia so damn serious all the time! Good job! I've reverted it. —MJCdetroit (yak) 19:20, 1 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Italian maps

Hi I've swtiched the pink Italian map with a green one which works in Template:Location map Italy but in swtiching it in Template:Infobox CityIT (which virtually all the Italian places have) it seems to not work for this template. E.g see Amalfi. COuld you fix the digits in this template so as this new map works in all the commune articles?. I think the digits e.g top, bottom and x y etc need tweaking in that template Cheers ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 13:49, 3 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

It looks like it works now. —MJCdetroit (yak) 15:24, 3 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I've seen you've changed the Italian map, unfortunately the new version does not feature the island of Lampedusa (the southernmost point in Italy, and a city itself). Could you please fix it? Thanks in advance, --Angelo (talk) 15:47, 3 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I didn't change it per se, Blofeld did that, I just adjusted it so that it would work. I will revert my changes until Blofeld and Angelo can agree on a map. Blofeld can the "green map" be redrawn to include this island? —MJCdetroit (yak) 19:03, 3 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Mmm its a shame Sadalmelik is absent at present as we need him to draw some maps (including Canadian provinces). I'm sure you would both agree if Lampedusa was included, the newer map is far better than a bright pink one for land cover. ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 19:50, 3 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Yeap the green one is better. The pink one is what John Wayne Bobbitt's crank looked like when all the King's horses and all the King's men put his white trash dumbass back together again! —MJCdetroit (yak) 20:36, 3 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Either that or something Dale Winton would have drawn lol. Its a shame 99.5% of othe rplaces have to suffer because of one island. It is extremely tiny on the map anyway. WOuldn't it be best to make a fixed locator map for the island and then use the green one as a pin for the rest? ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 11:09, 4 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

It is as tiny as the other minor islands in the map, and it's fully part of Italy, so a version of the Italian map who does not feature Lampedusa is an incorrect one. I think it can be reasonably edited with no particular harm (I might try to do it myself, but I've really no time right now). --Angelo (talk) 16:22, 5 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Mountains

What would you say to adding the location map to the mountain template? See article slike Everest and Nanga Parbat -we now have map locators for mountains, but could these be added inside the box rather than outside? ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 11:53, 4 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

When you have a moment could you convert Hohhot to standard and get rid of that horrid map. I aim to root out all of the dodgy chinese and japanese maps and replace them. Luckily there aren't too many articles on chinese cities started on wikipedia yet ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 22:05, 4 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Maps in the infobox mountains in done. It took longer to explain that I did it and tweaking the table on the doc page than inserting the code itself. See Template:Infobox Mountain and an example at Everest. —MJCdetroit (yak) 19:14, 5 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Is there anyway you can get the round pin to change to a triangle to represent a mountain-if you see the map on the Everest page below it should work in the template. I'd imagine you;d have to copy the paramaters from the Template:Location map into the mountain one so it can be added ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 12:10, 7 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Infobox Settlement / UN/LOCODE

Hi MJCdetroit, maybe you already saw: Template_talk:Infobox_Settlement#UN.2FLOCODE. I added some more notes, why I think to have the variable is good. Today I also contacted the first person, that maybe can insert data via bot. Do you think, the name un_locode for the variable is good? Or should it better be unlocode? The underscore separates the UN from the locode, like the / does. Is the code I placed for insertion technically ok? Best regards UnLoCode (talk) 20:06, 8 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Infobox Country

Hi mate. How's it goin? Life for me has been very full at the moment (but very good, all the same), and I'm gradually adjusting and finding my way back to what could pass for "normal".

Following the comments I made at WT:INFOWATCH yesterday [1], you might be interested in the new template in question currently used for the Wales article: {{Infobox Country styled}}. Such template forks are generally a bad idea, and I imagine it won't be long before attempts might be made to introduce these changes to the main template. - 52 Pickup (deal) 06:36, 9 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Your reversal on Wales

Please note that the page you reference says very clearly "This structure is advisory only, and should not be enforced against the wishes of those actually working on the article in question". Please respect that statement. --Snowded (talk) 04:49, 11 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Structure and Goals are under different headings on that page and what is stated for the structure of an individual page can not be applied to the Goals of the project.
I don't disagree that a style change would be nice. I disagree with the manner in which it is being done.
So the long standing consensus and the stated goals of WP:Countries doesn't mean anything—they mean nothing and ganders no respect. Anyone can do anything without any regard for what is in the best interest of the whole project.

What is the benefit of using the database dump? I tried downloading it to find out but cancelled it because was taking a very long time (many hours). I am just like you, I don't know. But I do know that User:CapitalR has done database work before with AWB. He may be able to answer your question. If he can't User:Mets501 surely can! —MJCdetroit (yak) 12:21, 11 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Postpone Infobox_Country colors

13-April-2008: Hello, Wikid77 here. Thanks for your offer of support to develop color/style options in Template:Infobox_Country. Unfortunately, there is a dead-lock debate about the issue boiling over from T:Infobox_Country_styled, when I'm leaving for a wikibreak, and I did not want to saddle you with the final implementation plus the dead-lock debate while I am gone. In reality, the color-styling in the new template is far more complex than the debate: styling applies not only to title-bar & border, but also to box background, section-header styles, and map borders. The color debate stems from the "Wales" article, and I can separate that debate from the infobox by returning to the use of a color-table surrounding the old Infobox_Country: no need to change live Infobox_Country at this point or even debate its colors. The precedents for color infoboxes are many: Template:Infobox_Anatomy & Geobox colors in article "Ireland" (as an island, not the national regions). The Wales border-color debate involves "over-bright" colors used in the flag of Wales, and if not flag colors, deciding who chooses which related pantone shades. That debate does not even consider map borders, yet. It is all too much, so I will archive T:Infobox_Country_styled and runaway to wikibreak paradise. You might wish to table discussions for a month or speedy-delete {{Infobox_Country_styled}} until the Wales debate settles. Sorry for the timing of this mess. Good luck. -Wikid77 (talk) 22:35, 13 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I will delete it but you got to remove it from remaining articles which use it. Then let me know, I will delete it and close TFD debate. - Darwinek (talk) 14:18, 14 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Wales Reversal

We are just getting this discussion calmed down and more rational Please do not provoke by reversals until the issue is resolved. --Snowded (talk) 14:31, 14 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Wiki77 said to speedy delete it. Therefore, it has to be removed for main space transclusion. —MJCdetroit (yak) 14:38, 14 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
and why should Wiki77 have the right to over rule a discussion in progress? Please explain how this in any way supports the ideas of the Wikipedia. --Snowded (talk) 17:56, 14 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Move, not copy and delete

I just saw that you copied the Template:Infobox Country styled and its talk page to Template:Infobox Country/styled sandbox and then deleted Template:Infobox Country styled and its talk page. That looses the page history which means editors can not see who coded what and wrote what part. Makes it hard for people to discuss the changes. And it also looses the attributions to the authors and thus breaks the GFDL. You should instead have moved the pages. You can easily rectify it by deleting the new pages, undeleting the old pages and then move the old pages to the new names.

--David Göthberg (talk) 15:20, 14 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

You are correct sir, sorry. At the time, I didn't think it would really matter as there was only two contributors to the talk page; one being myself. I copied the contents of the template page before it was to be deleted. I just didn't want wiki77's work to get lost during his wikibreak. I would have fixed that but it looks as if you did that for me. Thank you. —MJCdetroit (yak) 17:06, 14 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, I see you suggested on the talk page some days ago to move the page to a sandbox position. And that was a good suggestion. It seems we have reached a good solution to all this now.

MCJdetroit, I received an e-mail from one of the supporters of the proposed policy strongly suggesting that I trim down the ‘engine’ section, which he felt had grown out of hand. I had nagging doubts about that issue and the e-mail confirmed the hunch. I’ve changed nothing about the remaining examples; there are simply fewer of them. I think the one’s I chose to leave are the three that communicate the essential point that has to be made. I hope you agree. Greg L (talk) 07:33, 25 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Norway and Switzerland

Ya you turned up when I needed you. I can freely add infboxes to most places in africa, asia and latin america and nobody will batter an eyelid but I try to edit a northern European country and it brings on the reversion brigade -you saw but happened with Italy also. There seems to be some mistaken belief that these people "own" these articles. I tried to change the infbox Switzerland also to at least have the map at the top but suddenly project members appeared and said "that isn't the way to go"

How isn't this infobox an improvement to the existing one???? ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 09:03, 4 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Europe is touchy because some of those infoboxes were developed long ago. Some are good like the German one, some are not so good but are held on to because of national pride or whatever...
Look for the lower quality ones to standardize first, Norway one is a good start. Looks like they want to use a "wrapper" of infobox Settlement. Using a wrapper at first is ok cuz it is easier (maybe), but then we can get a bot to standardize the fields later.
I am still only editing once in a while. My wife is on our home mac a lot lately and I haven't been bringing my laptop home from work, so not much personal computer time for moi; but I'm cool with that.
I'll see if I can get "K" to add some "rank" fields to Infobox Settlement. It will help your Norway situation. Regards—MJCdetroit (yak) 03:00, 5 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry about that MJCdetroit. My question wasn’t intended to lure you into any issues, or meant as an endorsement of Nichalp’s move. I had maintenance in mind, mainly turning a talkpage archivebox with red links into blue ones. --Van helsing (talk) 08:57, 20 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Wheel warring

OK, this is getting ridiculous. I have just finished discussion with Husond why move warring with another admin over a move protected page is totally unacceptable. He agrees to revert his action, does so, and now you move it back? How many admins plan to move this move protected page? WjBscribe 01:12, 20 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I looked at the discussion surrounding that move and the move in the first place seemed sketchy. V H (above) asked that I moved around some pages associated with that page, but someone had already moved Myanmar back to Burma. So I changed some of a VH's changes to correspond to the move back to Burma. No sooner did I move those pages back then Husond moved the page back to Myanmar because of your discussion with him or something. Seems to me that the page should have gone though the WP:RM process in the first place. Gain consensus first through the community and move those pages anywhere that the community wants to until then the article should stay anchored. —MJCdetroit (yak) 01:30, 20 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I have no opinion on the correct title, you however have been involved in these discussions before and moved a move protected page to your preferred title [2]. That is a clear misuse of your admin status. I am trying to create a consensus gathering process to resolve this matter finally, but it is not helped by these constant moves. I really must ask you to reverse yourself and allow administrators who have not been involved in the naming dispute to determine this matter. WjBscribe 01:39, 20 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I've taken this to AN/I because we really need to resolve this quickly to stop the wheel warring. Comments could be appreciated. Ryan Postlethwaite 01:50, 20 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
You're right I was involve before, thanks for pointing that out. If it wasn't for the request above, I probably wouldn't have noticed. Therefore, I've reverted my change on the grounds of WP:UNINVOLVED, but I still think that the article should have remained in a status quo position (i.e. Burma) until a wider community consensus to move it can be gathered. The community knows best and it will play itself out for the best. —MJCdetroit (yak) 03:24, 20 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you, that is helpful. I really don't have an opinion on the correct title here - I haven't yet had time to even read all the arguments. But I do think it important that this be settled calmly and with consensus to avoid this becoming a prolonged battle over the page's title. WjBscribe 03:37, 20 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
