I do not vandalise

I made a mistake on the Paul McCartney Talk page. Somebody else had deleted most of the page and looking at the user name most left behind it seems quite obvious who it is. I re-added my comments on Paul McCartney being left-handed.

I do not appreciate being labelled as someone who vandalises. I try to contribute factual comments.Peter Jensen 12:48, 17 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

help needed with AfD for Teledyne Ryan M-350 UAV

Not sure what I've done wrong...maybe you can take a look and tell me? I had not problem adding the tag to the article, or filling in the first deletiong reason. Added the entry {{subst:afd3|pg=Teledyne Ryan M-350 UAV}} per the tag to the log, but it doesn't want to come up as a seperate entry, with its own header. My first deletion reason text shows as part of the text of entry number 81, Physical Sciences (going to the section for that article, though, and my text isn't there). I'm sure I've somehow mucked the code, but can't find where. Can you please take a look? Thanks. Akradecki 18:35, 17 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Please be more careful with your handling of speedy deletion procedures. You tagged Mert yucel as a nn-bio, and this was inappropriate because the article contained several assertions of notability. You also neglected to add a nn-warn to the page creator's talk page. It's possible that the page should be deleted through AFD or PROD, but please be sure to follow proper process in the future. Thanks! -Hit bull, win steak(Moo!) 13:06, 18 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I think it must have been a mistake. I do {{subst:nn-warn}}, but only if I feel it's an honest attempt at an article and I have enough time. MER-C 13:16, 18 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry you've been spammed, but I hope you'll find for a good reason . I've noticed you are active around the recent changes arena (normally having beaten me to a revert), and I'm currently looking for help with a new project. NPOV Tag

Hi MER-C I created and article for a Urdu Poet Maajed Siddiqui. He is a well known Urdu Poet from Pakistan. I saw that you recently marked it as NPOV, I am an old student of Prof. Maajed Siddiqui and know him quite well, what can I change in the article so that you would remove the NPOV tag, please let me know

Regards,

Naqsh-e-Faryadi

The article uses an excessive amount of superlatives to describe the subject, e.g. "He is a a legendry writer and a great poet with very impressive potential for describing complex social subjects in simple words." Also, you can try to trim the list of his works by picking the most important ones. Wikipedia:Avoid peacock terms is a good place to start. MER-C 12:55, 23 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

A very Californian RfA thanks from Luna Santin

Thanks for your support in my not-so-recent RfA, which succeeded with a final tally of (97/4/4)! I've never been able to accept compliments gracefully, and the heavy support from this outstanding community left me at a complete loss for words -- so, a very belated thank you for all of your kind words.

I have done and will continue to do the utmost to serve the community in this new capacity, wherever it may take me, and to set an example others might wish to follow in. With a little luck and a lot of advice, this may be enough. Maybe someday the enwiki admins of the future will look back and say, "Yeah, that guy was an admin." Hopefully then they don't start talking about the explosive ArbComm case I got tied into and oh what a drama that was, but we'll see, won't we?

Surely some of you have seen me in action by now; with that in mind, I openly invite and welcome any feedback here or here -- help me become the best editor and sysop I can be.

Again, thank you. –Luna Santin

And good luck with your current RfA! Luna Santin 12:27, 23 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

RFA questions

Hi, MER-C. I notice you haven't answered the last couple of questions on your RFA (one of them mine). Of course that's up to you entirely. But they go to the heart of what many people are opposing over--in fact, I see somebody just opposed "per" my question--so I think you could be doing yourself a disfavor by not answering them. Saving your RfA

I feel compelled to address Gwernol's point. Yes, you have an error rate. Everyone does. Though I do not have the diffs to back it up, I remember undoing your actions a couple of times. Taking your statement as true, namely, that you have a 95% accuracy rate, where there isn't any systemic to understand relevant policy, I would be ok with that. You would assuage a lot of opposers if you promised to each opposer personally before this thing closes to never zap articles outright, but to submit them for review as a non-sysop would. I am surea half-dozen would be happy to switch on those terms, handing you the mop. - CrazyRussian talk/email 19:50, 24 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

OK, so now it's quickly becoming a joke. For your own sake, please withdraw ASAP - CrazyRussian talk/email 08:03, 25 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Your RfA

I think you did the right thing in withdrawing and I wanted to express my hope that you won't be too downcast by the result. Many nice things were said and I hope you can take heart from that. The action required should you wish to stand again (and I hope you do) is fairly clear. Very best wishes, --Guinnog 11:58, 25 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Agreed. Your anti-vandal work here is unbelieveable. To be likened as the second Curps is as good of a compliment to your skills as you can get. I'm sure the next RfA will pass without a hitch. Keep up the good work -- Samir धर्म 12:01, 25 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, I've noticed that I've become a little less deletionist but there's still a lot of entropy to take care of. And I wish for a faster internet connection... MER-C 12:17, 25 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

And while you're here, could you please permanently protect my user page (edit=autoconfirmed move=sysop)? I'm sick of dealing with vandals who try to retaliate or use my user page to make personal attacks against me. MER-C 12:34, 25 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Things may have not turned out favorably, but you did the right thing by withdrawing your RfA. Thanks, and keep up the great work. =) Nishkid64 22:39, 25 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Speedy deletion

I wish to express an opinion on speedy deletions and not biting the newcomers. I'm not singling you out, I've noticed other new page patrollers who do the same thing.

I think it would be a good thing to leave the template message (the bit that says something like "{{subst:spam-notice|pg=Bell Pottinger Group}} ~~~~" at the bottom of the box) on the creating user's talk page, especially if it is a new user who is probably unfamiliar with Wikipedia policies. If I were a newcomer who found my article suddenly deleted without explanation I would be quite offended.

Thanks

short explanation

Hi! I'm a banned blocked editor, and I have been trying to communicate with the banning admin (has happened since). User:Dasondas has been deleting comments I made to that admins talk page [2], as if they were harassment or vandalism. So I wanted to ask him about it, but he just deleted my (civil!) comments from his own talk page as well. He commented on the suggestion of another editor to get his talk page sprotected here [3]. I happen to think that this is actually an assholes behaviour, and nothing butt, looking at the very civil way ([4], [5], [6], [7], [8]) in which I tried to contact him for deleting (my, once again, civil) attempts at communication from another user's talk page. -- Perm. blocked user:Subversive_element, editing from IP address: 84.44.175.12 12:01, 26 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Can't help, not an admin. Try the admin noticeboards. MER-C 12:07, 26 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I already tried contacting an AMA member. I know very well that I cannot do anything against that block and that my most recent edit to Dasondas' talk page are simple vandalism. I'm just very angry, and felt like I had to express that properly (and I immediately reverted that myself, so that it just appears in his history). After all, I am beyond hope that anyone on WP can/will step in, even if I believe that block by that admin is more than dubious. Sorry for the harassment, I am not going to do any further edits like that, promise. 84.44.175.12 12:17, 26 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
As I said, I can't really do anything. Sorry. MER-C 12:54, 26 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not policing you, but...

Hi again MER-C, I was on recent edits patrol again today and I had just posted a welcome message on DaFazzle's talk page before following up on what the posting was. I concur that the article posted is indeed a speedy deletion candidate, and it was quite accidental that we happened onto the same article together. I checked the talk page and found no entry informing the user of the deletion request. I checked back in 5 minutes and there was still no notification.

You may recall that I contacted you yesterday about a similar speedy deletion and you concluded that the shoot-on-sight edict precluded you from posting a warning. However, I can't see how this article conforms to the type that the shoot-on-sight edict describes. May I remind you that Wikipedia guidelines urge us to err on the side of caution and to assume good faith.

As I stated in the header, I am not policing you, I have no grudge against you and I'm not an administrator enforcing policy. In fact, I admire your sterling work and your dedication to Wikipedia. However, as a member of the welcoming committee, I do attempt to make newcomers feel welcome and it saddens me to see these efforts eroded by insensitive actions by others. I'm not saying you acted maliciously, but I would urge you to try to imagine how you would have felt if your first attempts were mercilessly shot down.

Please consider placing "{{subst:nn-warn|Lemmy's Land}}~~~~" on the User Talk page of the author. It really is a simple copy and paste and takes only a few seconds.

Thanks for listening.

LittleOldMe 10:10, 27 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, I do {{subst:nn-warn}} (in fact, I have a script for it) but the threshold for doing so is higher than some guy creating an article about himself or someone writing an article about the "cool new webforum". Such users are usually unproductive. MER-C 10:28, 27 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
My point is that the article was not about the user, in fact, it was not bio, it was about a website. Also, are we not supposed to abide by the assume good faith principle. I have witnessed an Rfa being denied because of a single bad judgement where bad faith was assumed and was proved wrong. Are you willing to risk that?
LittleOldMe 11:04, 27 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Hence the message at the top of my talk page: "If I tagged an article you created for deletion, please read the relevant notability guidelines and the criteria for speedy deletion before posting. I usually leave a reason for the deletion notice, think of it as a constructive criticism of the article." MER-C 11:50, 27 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Slow it down

Hello MER-C. While browsing Category:Category needed I came across this article which you had tagged for speedy deletion the same minute it was created by a newcomer. The article, while short, did provide ample context about what appears to be a notable American landscape architect. If I may, I'd like to ask that you slow it down with deletion tagging and give articles a chance, especially when they're being established by new contributors (see WP:BITE), and consider engaging them on their talk page regarding any concerns you may have. Take care, Can't sleep, clown will eat me 09:05, 2 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Unfortunately, though, that isn't really possible on my end due to software issues: the same way I came across that speedy (and most others) is the same way I come across vandalism. As for biting, I tend to think of it as a constructive criticism of the article. It can be said that the speedy templates need to be a bit more newbie friendly, though. MER-C 10:27, 2 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Hi MER-C. I'm afraid that I'm with Can't sleep, clown will eat me on this one. The same thing applies to Toy Trends and the first steps that this user took. You made no effort to communicate with the newcomer. How is this constructive criticism?
I'm afraid on your behalf that unless you ease up on the newcomers you'll find any future requests for admin'ship being turned down.

Thought I had a spammer there, I was pretty certain that if left unchecked that user page would become a catalogue. His username didn't help his cause either. Spammy userpages are extremely hard to track once they slip through the cracks - in fact over a fortnight I only found about 200 of them despite dredging through thousands of user pages. MER-C 12:26, 2 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
And spammy user pages don't show up on Special:Newpages on creation too, which makes it even easier for spammers to slip past the defences. That's why I'm heavy handed - it's on creation or the spam gets lost in the ever increasing entropy of Wikipedia. MER-C 12:27, 2 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The Barnstar of Diligence

Another one? Thanks. MER-C 12:37, 2 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I'm confused by your reasoning on closing the AfD. The nominator, James Leftovic, never withdrew his nomination. He seemed to have mistakenly removed his own comments and left a {{Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Alex Kramer}} in their place. A single IP editor then made comments about changes they made to the article and no further discussion took place... Am I missing something? --Onorem 13:12, 2 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Oops, I think the self inclusion confused me somewhat. I've relisted the debate to remove the doubt. MER-C 08:11, 3 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, you forgot to replace the template on the article, but I'm doing it now :) (after a question about it on the AfD) Just a note though - if a user withdraws a nomination, as long as there are still delete votes, the nomination is still valid. See WP:SK and WP:DPR for more info - it's one of those things which goes against what you'd expect at first! Martinp23 23:41, 3 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, you nominated this page for speedy deletion. I have speedily deleted it, but please take the time to inform the original creator of the page in future. Thanks, Proto::type 12:40, 3 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Could you have a look at who created the article, please? Chances are it's a short article about oneself or a friend. My threshhold for warning is slightly higher than that.
I'm logging off for tonight. MER-C 12:48, 3 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Well, for tomorrow - your threshhold for warning should be 'every time you nominate a page for speedy deletion, have the simple courtesy to inform the creator'. Failing to do so is neither civil nor polite. In this instance, warning solved nothing, and the page ended up getting protected from recreation, but the majority of such cases could be resolved if the new page patrollers also took the time to inform the (usually new) contributor that their effort (often well-meaning) is not suitable. Proto::type 13:27, 3 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks

For reverting the vandalism to my Userpage. That was remarkably quick work. All hail RC Patrollers! --Doc Tropics Message in a bottle 10:41, 4 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

You're welcome. MER-C 10:42, 4 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Mentor?

I am new to this medium. Instead of the cold harsh critisism for new ones who don't know what they're doing, could you just help me do it right instead. I would be very grateful for your guidance. CoolScience

The first step would be to determine whether there is a conflict of interest, e.g. are you writing about something you or your relative created? Such articles are a no-no and usually end up in deletion. Next we need to verify whether that particular theory is notable. Filing patents in not an indicator of notability since some patents (and applications) are absolute crap: [10] [11] [12] and others are just silly. Thirdly, does it constitute original research, is it unverifiable or does it seem to have been made up one day? MER-C 01:30, 5 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I'd suggest writing some articles on non-controversial topics first. There's plenty of ideas here. MER-C 01:34, 5 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Please restrain yourself from making fun of other users

MER-C, on November 5th 2006 at 01:58 (UTC), you have added to the page: Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/CANUSA Flag the following comment: Don't you just love self-references, especially in the first sentence? This was basically added in order to make fun me. This is against Wikipedia policies under something that I believe is called "Kicking when he's down". Please restrain yourself from using such phrases in the future. Duhman0009 03:10, 5 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

It was a sarcastic criticism of the article, not the person who wrote it and it was always intended to be that. AFD debates are always criticism of the articles in question. MER-C 03:41, 5 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Hehe, nice try, but I was the guy who wrote it and I found it offensive. You try to pull a funny out of this and now it's backfiring. I won't hold a grudge, just try to restrain yourself in the future. Remember, your contribution to Wikipedia is it's own reward, you're not in this to gain power or popularity. Duhman0009 03:50, 5 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
WP:OWN. MER-C 04:09, 5 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I can play at that as well you know WP:WL. Also, you can easily see that out of all the ones that were for the deletion of the page, you're the only one for which I have posted on a talk page. So the WP:OWN cannot be applied unless I would have gone to each user talk page of all 4 or 5 members that were for the deletion of my page. Duhman0009 05:55, 5 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

(deindent) Sarcastic criticism of articles takes place all the time. Don't take criticism of your article personally as it is a really minor thing in the grand scheme of things especially in RL. There are a lot more nastier things around here, including vandals on wheels (if you're wondering, Ryulong is one of our vandal fighters and TheM62Manchester turned out to be a vandal in disguise) and direct criticism of YOU. I reiterate my original comment about it being a critism of the article in question and also my comment on not taking it personally as it is counterproductive. MER-C 07:48, 5 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Criticism I can take, I take it everytime I do my job. Sarcasm and stupid remarks, especially from someone who's not in charge but pretends or would like to be, that I do not take very well. Doing what you do to contribute to Wikipedia it great, but as I stated, contributing is it's own reward. You are not in charge here, you do not have any power, you can be banned like any user. Duhman0009 14:14, 5 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Let's end this discussion, I want to archive my talk page. I can give that particular AFD a courtesy blanking if you want one. I am not in charge but I do have some power as to determining what edits and articles are allowed (see WP:RCP) and my opinion is respected. MER-C 10:01, 6 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Blank or rephrase, either way is fine. Duhman0009 13:09, 6 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Done. MER-C 08:20, 7 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

DYK

Updated DYK query On 5 November, 2006, Did you know? was updated with a fact from the article Planum Boreum, which you created. If you know of another interesting fact from a recently created article, then please suggest it on the "Did you know?" talk page.

Islamic Online University

Re Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Islamic Online University, I deleted the stub which remained as an empty article, I could not expand it due to verifiability problems (no reliable sources available). Hope you don't mind. Guy 10:45, 7 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

No, I don't. I'm a deletionist. :) MER-C 11:09, 7 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
