Hi again, Just saw your message on the request for feedback board. I moved your article to U.S. Ordnance as that fits the naming conventions and seems to be the most widely used. Your original title, and US Ordnance, now redirect there. If you know of any other commonly used alternative names, you can turn them into redirects by creating that page and adding just the text #REDIRECT [[U.S. Ordnance]]. Mk43 machine gun article[edit]

Copyright problem: Mk43 Machine Gun[edit]

Mk 48 machine gun isn't really a good "role model" to work of off. It could use some work (such as referencing, as you noted), and really ought to be merged to the M249 article anyway. There was a suggestion on the talk page to do that a couple of years ago, but it was never followed up on (if you feel like it, you can take that project on, see WP:MERGE). You shouldn't assume that simply because it exists on Wikipedia means that it's good; problems go unnoticed for a long time on occasion (for a good example, see the Seigenthaler incident). If you're anxious to get editing before the AfD is closed, the best place to do so would be at M60 machine gun, which we both agree could use work. bahamut0013wordsdeeds 20:24, 17 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

How to attribute public domain text[edit]

Hi. :) The copyright concerns with the article above have been addressed, and our copyright policies have been explained to you. I'm just dropping by because I think based on your ntoes that part of the article is also copied from U.S. Ordnance Spec Sheets. This is not a copyright problem, because although many nations retain copyright in federal works, the United States does not. (See Wikipedia:Public domain.) We can use that content, but if you have copied from it directly it's not enough to just cite your source, you have to acknowledge that direct copying. This keeps us compliant with the guideline at Wikipedia:Plagiarism.

The easiest way to do this is to use the proper attribution template from Category:Attribution templates. There are a bunch of them related to the U.S. government (Category:United States government attribution templates) because there are so many departments. It can be difficult to find the precise one you need since currently half of them have obscure initials. I'm slowly converting them all to human-understandable names. :D If you can't find anything better, Template:US government works. If that doesn't work for some reason, you can come up with your own using that as a basis.

I would ordinarily help out here by tagging, but I can't find the source online so I'm not entirely sure that the section is copied. If it is, and you want help placing that attribution template, please leave me a note here and just give me a nudge at my talk page to make sure I don't overlook it. I'll be happy to give you a hand.

(Just FYI, Wikipedia:Copy-paste briefly summarizes various points about reusing previously published text. It's a good kind of primer, which includes links to various policies and guidelines.)

File permission problem with File:M2HBEditorial.pdf[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:M2HBEditorial.pdf. I noticed that while you provided a valid copyright licensing tag, there is no proof that the creator of the file has agreed to release it under the given license.

If you are the copyright holder for this media entirely yourself but have previously published it elsewhere (especially online), please either

  • make a note permitting reuse under the CC-BY-SA or another acceptable free license (see this list) at the site of the original publication; or
  • Send an email from an address associated with the original publication to [email protected], stating your ownership of the material and your intention to publish it under a free license. You can find a sample permission letter here. If you take this step, add {{OTRS pending}} to the file description page to prevent premature deletion.

If you did not create it entirely yourself, please ask the person who created the file to take one of the two steps listed above, or if the owner of the file has already given their permission to you via email, please forward that email to [email protected].
