Senkaku Islands

I know you have an issue on the terms "China" and "Taiwan" personally. I would point out I used China/Taiwan only as common names which bear no political implication; i.e., it does not mean I'm saying Taiwan is not part of China, etc. STSC (talk) 04:33, 8 February 2013 (UTC)

Since you are courteous in addressing me on a long-belaboured issue, I take your word as it is. However, as far as I recall, even before I started caring as much as I do now about naming, this page, as far as I recall, used the full names, which I alluded to in my revert edit summary. "My master, Annatar the Great, bids thee welcome!" 05:49, 8 February 2013 (UTC)
By all means put back the "People's Republic of China" and "Republic of China" into the sentence but please keep the other neutral wording in my edit. STSC (talk) 05:22, 9 February 2013 (UTC)

Chinese cuisine

Hi, I noticed you removed Taiwanese Chinese cuisine from the Chinese cuisine page because of POV reasons. Could you explain/elaborate on that? From the first sentence of the page, Chinese cuisine is any of several styles originating from regions of China, some of which have become increasingly popular in other parts of the world. Taiwanese food originating from China would seem to fit the bill, and indeed at least half of Taiwanese cuisine is devoted to cuisine originating from China. Transcendence (talk) 17:51, 14 March 2013 (UTC)

Stating Taiwan is "overseas" is POV and just as false as stating Hong Kong or Macau are overseas. The Chinese elements of it are just as regional as any province's cuisine. "My master, Annatar the Great, bids thee welcome!" 18:09, 14 March 2013 (UTC)

National Emblem of the People's Republic of China

Regarding this revert, do you have a reason for the title of that article to differ from Flag of China which was moved (even tough we have a Flag of the Republic of China article), or from it's parent page which was moved from People's Republic of China to China. If there is no reason, then the current title violates WP:LOCALCONCENSUS. Emmette Hernandez Coleman (talk) 02:52, 22 March 2013 (UTC)

See a quote of mine (of NilEinne) on my user page; at least for the PRC side, I won't diehard insist that we use the full name, but I would rather you follow due process and there are far more productive things to do than such moves. "My master, Annatar the Great, bids thee welcome!" 03:00, 22 March 2013 (UTC)
That was for the Taiwan article, not the China article, and child pages match their parents unless there is some reason not to. Do you have some reason for the full name to be in that article, but not to be in the China or Flag of China articles? Emmette Hernandez Coleman (talk) 03:17, 22 March 2013 (UTC)
That is textbook definition of double standards. "My master, Annatar the Great, bids thee welcome!" 03:26, 22 March 2013 (UTC)
I don't understand. Are you saying that what I've said is a double standard, or that for the titles to differ without a reason would be a double standard, or what? Emmette Hernandez Coleman (talk) 03:35, 22 March 2013 (UTC)

The Dai River - China vs. Hebei

Guardian, thanks for updating and cleaning up the Dai River stub I created earlier today! It looks much better cleaner now - my prose is always a little twisty for some reason. However, even though the river is intra-provincial, the list of Chinese rivers says it's the only one called Dai. For those people who don't know their Chinese provinces, having it as Dai (China), leaving in a link to the China webpage, and referring to Hebei explicitly as a province might all help clarify things. What do you think? TI. Gracchus (talk) 02:05, 20 February 2014 (UTC)

WP:NCRIVER states "In practice, most rivers needing disambiguation have been identified by the smallest appropriate political entity", and WP:NC-ZH#Place names asks to avoid using ", China" or the like for disambiguation. As for the opening sentence, I do not care whether Hebei is "embellished". I question the "who don't know their FOO's states/provinces" reasoning, since it's not as if every U.S. state is universally known, either. "My master, Annatar the Great, bids thee welcome!" 02:55, 20 February 2014 (UTC)
Thank you - I appreciate your prompt feedback. I'm still pretty green, and so your knowledge of policy in these areas is significantly better than mine. Since the naming policy suggests that only province-level entities should be labeled "Name, China," I will leave the sentence as it is, since province is implied by the addition of the nation name, and curious people can simply click the link.
As an aside, I don't assume that any "generic" reader of Wikipedia will be able to recognize the name of a US State, and would err towards including the information if I thought it wasn't otherwise obvious. Just out of curiosity, what does FOO mean? I've never seen the term - should I know it? Thanks again for your pithy rewrite and for pointing me towards the pertinent Wikipedia policies. TI. Gracchus (talk) 04:30, 20 February 2014 (UTC)
FOO is meant here as a generic place-holder, and is more often seen as a generic class in a code-sense. I sometimes use "XXX" instead, but that has shady connotations (think MPAA). "My master, Annatar the Great, bids thee welcome!" 04:34, 20 February 2014 (UTC)
Ah, good ol' generic variable names! I get it now - I'm just not used to seeing them in caps. Can definitely understand why you avoid "XXX." Thanks for the clarification! TI. Gracchus (talk) 08:01, 20 February 2014 (UTC)

Phoenix

Hi. Thanks for looking out on this page. Just wanted to drop you a note that the article is up for FA review. And I'm getting hammered there. One of the issues was over-linking. So the changes I made today were in reference to that. Found a neat little script on the MOS linking page which points out when a link has already been made. I was going to revert the last change you made regarding desert climate, since it's already linked, but that link is in the lead section, so we should be okay per MOS. Again, thanks for keeping tabs on the page. Feel free to add any comments on the FAC pageOnel5969 (talk) 20:22, 2 March 2014 (UTC)

As I used CTRL+F on the article (and not the source) itself, I didn't see the link to UHI; in any case, I've never heard of UHI being referred to as a "heat sink" before. To me, a "heat sink" implies bowl-shaped topography which tends to trap warm air and not be conducive to inversions as is commonly the case with valleys. kunming attack should be treated same as 9/11 on wiki

Kunming attack has the same nature as 9/11, where innocent civilians were butchered by militants of certain political motivations.

Since the 9/11 wiki article describes it as a terrorist attack in the fir sentence, same thing should apply to the kunming attack article.

Besides, it is weird for a wiki article not to have theme sentence describing what the article is about in its first paragraph. Instead the article starts by immediately going to details of the event. This is not wiki style.

Be neutral and no double standard.

Thanks!--182.239.99.131 (talk) 16:42, 3 March 2014 (UTC)

To say nothing at the present, when all the evidence is still not released and some of it even circumstantial, is more neutral than to make WP:UNDUE or WP:CRYSTALBALL comparisons with 11 Sept. There is no indication yet that this will bring about a major shift in PRC policy (and unless it is to be more "open", I hope it does not!) as 11 Sept did with the U.S. Also, I don't need any lecturing by an IP on well-known policy when said user can't even avoid opening the article like a newspaper ("southwestern Chinese of ...")! Edit warring on Taipei Comment

Hi, I've restored your version of the article but please be careful - edit comments like "pathetically has nothing better to do" is a personal attack and should be avoided. Maybe reporting the issue at WP:AIV would be a better option instead of engaging in an edit war. Best, ► Philg88 ◄ talk 07:31, 20 March 2014 (UTC)

Thank you for your eyes—it was not intended as a personal attack, and instead a summary of their "contribution" pattern, which is likely intent to indefinitely edit war regardless of the lectures by others, moreover established editors. I question the notion that this silent IP warrior views the "|rain colour = green" parameter as vandalism, since (s)he has made no comment in that regard, and even some established editors are hell-bent against colouring the precipitation or rain in {{Weather box}}, when there was no consensus to remove that option from the template altogether. "My master, Annatar the Great, bids thee welcome!" 07:42, 20 March 2014 (UTC)
You're welcome, and I understand where you're coming from but that's not how it would look to everyone. As for "rain colour = green" issue, it is a real pain. This is (at least) the third time I've seen edit warring over the issue - at Keelung I put a note in the source indicating that the parameter is valid but there are far too many instances of the template to do that for every one. I saw the discussion about removing the parameter altogether and it's a pity that there was no consensus. Maybe it would be worth restarting the discussion as there is now further evidence of the problems it causes. Cheers, ► Philg88 ◄ talk 08:01, 20 March 2014 (UTC)

Boise, Idaho weatherbox

Hi there. I have a question about the {{Boise, Idaho weatherbox}}. I've never seen something like that used before. I fiddled with it on my sandbox using other cities, but it didn't work. Where does the data come from? Are they being created for other cities? It's a very clean and easy way to add climate data. Thanks! Magnolia677 (talk) 00:42, 28 March 2014 (UTC)

In the U.S., it often comes from NOWData; replace the last three letters in the link with the corresponding NWS Weather Forecast Office code, which can be found by going to forecast.weather.gov and searching for "NWS Weather Forecast Office", and extracting the last three letters of that link. If the station you found is not at NOWData, you'll need to search at the full directory. "My master, Annatar the Great, bids thee welcome!" 00:48, 28 March 2014 (UTC)

Lastly, while your signature may have the nickname of User:Annatar the Great in it, it should also contain your actual username as well. I declined the speedy at Template:Philadelphia weatherbox because of the reversions by User:RHaworth. Since at least one person has objected to the prior speedy attempt, it makes this something that can't be speedied as uncontroversial. Weatherboxes

Please stop changing weatherbox names. The worst aspect is that you create the risk of losing edit histories. In the case, for example, of Salt Lake City, what was your objection to posting your new version straight over the existing one? — RHaworth (talk contribs) 20:36, 3 April 2014 (UTC)

@RHaworth: I will cease for the time being. However, I see that as long as there is an admin careful enough (such as yourself) to restore the prior edit histories, there is no risk on that part. I have my rationale for doing so, and will explain them in an e-mail directly sent to you. "My master, Annatar the Great, bids thee welcome!" 20:37, 3 April 2014 (UTC)

Regarding this and that

Let us have some explanations first:

  1. Why email me? Everything in your email was stuff which could and should be discussed on a Wikipedia talk page.
  2. What's the hurry? What difference would it make if I had left it till tomorrow before answering?

RHaworth (talk contribs) 18:45, 4 April 2014 (UTC)

@RHaworth:
  1. I e-mailed you precisely because I admitted there was a degree of impropriety.
  2. I admit there is little difference, but I felt this push you slightly to respond. In my mind, there was no guarantee you would; you know, some people (not implying you are one of them, per se), are notorious for being irresponsive to e-mails. "My master, Annatar the Great, bids thee welcome!" 18:56, 4 April 2014 (UTC)

I disagree with your excuse for creating side versions of these templates. I have been criticised in the past for copying email material on to a user talk page so, since you have admitted to impropriety, there is no harm in your posting the email text here so that we can discuss.

Please note that I have recovered edit histories for the weatherboxes for Denver, CO, Phoenix and New York City which you had caused to be deleted through your antics. — RHaworth (talk contribs) 21:24, 4 April 2014 (UTC)

Disagreeing without stating a reason is tantamount to having said nothing at all.
That you have recovered the edit histories was obvious to me long ago, thank you very much; I've had those pages watched for well over a year."My master, Annatar the Great, bids thee welcome!" 23:12, 4 April 2014 (UTC)
First we need to see your excuse so that I can give my reasons for disagreeing with it. — RHaworth (talk contribs) 23:20, 4 April 2014 (UTC)
What is done is done. Unless you can assure me there is absolutely no problem with creating side versions and have a sysop promptly restore page histories, I will not create "side" versions of these templates. If that option is unavailable, it would you do no good to not indef semi-protect the other pages in Category:United States weatherbox templates. There is no reason not to, for the vast majority of them, other than to pamper IPs that are usually up to no good to begin with. Thanks much. This problem had not occurred to me before and no one reminded me of it. "My master, Annatar the Great, bids thee welcome!" 02:27, 2 May 2014 (UTC)

Hello Þauron

(it would be hilarious to write in character as Fëanor given my userboxes, but I don't feel like doing that. Well at least not right now... :-Þ)

Nice username and sig you got there... Double sharp (talk) 14:26, 5 May 2014 (UTC)

Weatherboxes, revisited

@RHaworth: Per your request, I have no intention to "change weatherbox names". However, my underlying intention all along was to safeguard these climatic normals from obvious vandalism and subtler obfuscation. A summary of my reasoning:

  1. U.S. 30-yr climate normals are only released every 10 years. The last release was c. August 2011. Corrections to these normals by NOAA are far and wide.
  2. The NWS only records a few continuous variables: temperature, precipitation, snow, wind/wind direction (not supported by {{Weather box}}), and relative humidity. The last set of climate normals with sunshine duration was 1961–90, so data collection by the NWS must have stopped some time post-Cold War. Primary sources in climatology are, of course, usually superior to non-primary.
  3. These are objective data. "My master, Annatar the Great, bids thee welcome!" 02:24, 10 May 2014 (UTC)
  • I can only repeat: there is absolutely no justification for creating side versions of these templates. Protection is only applied when there is an history of vandalism. If you would like further opinions, possibly the village pump is the best place. But do make sure that you state your proposals clearly. — RHaworth (talk contribs) 14:15, 10 May 2014 (UTC)
  • @RHaworth: I am clear about the side versions.
  • As for the protection, (not that I am intent on WP:ADMINSHOPPING) I was asking for your opinion on that and was wondering whether WP:VP or WP:RPP would produce the results I want, given some admins with no knowledge on climatology may unfairly decline on the basis of sporadic (but not inexistent!) activity. "My master, Annatar the Great, bids thee welcome!" 03:31, 11 May 2014 (UTC)

No, you wrong

The results of a long discussions and voting:

  • Precipitation / rain color - no consensus, apply status quo (standard colour is blue, for years)
  • Snowfall color - consensus for blue
  • Humidity color - no consensus, apply status quo (standard colour is blue, for years)
  • Average High temperature color - clear (100%) consensus for red (standard), excludes the use of pastels
  • Average Low temperature color - consensus for violet

For each case must be consensus, where is consensus to use pastels and green for San Juan, Puerto Rico or Key West? If you still restore own version without new and against current consensus, will be treated as vandalism and quickly reverted. Subtropical-man talk

No link, no evidence → Bleat all you want.
I created {{San Juan, Puerto Rico weatherbox}}. Enough said.
I don't normally do pastel except in tropical climates with a low seasonal temperature variation and record lows well above freezing, in which case pastel does a better job at differentiation between the shades of warm. "My master, Annatar the Great, bids thee welcome!" 21:17, 24 May 2014 (UTC)
First: it does not matter that you are created, consensus concern the entire English Wikipedia.
Second: stop cheating, your version is almost the same as original (the same data and add pastels). You remove data from article and create new template marked as your work. You false of history of changes, this is vandalism.
Thirdly: you break rules of Wikipedia, for example: Wikipedia:CYCLE (your edit -> exist oppose -> discussion and consensus).
Fourth: you wrote "let's at least keep the rain green and not in the same colour as precip days", no one did not support your thesis, there is consensus (omitting voting) - Precipitation/Rainfall/Snow (mm/inches) and Avg. Precipitation/Rainy/Snow days should have the same color.

Until you clear yourself up on what is vandalism and have the sense to realise the original contained no %sun or relative humidity, I won't bother discussing anything with you. "My master, Annatar the Great, bids thee welcome!" 21:28, 24 May 2014 (UTC)
Add "Percent possible sunshine" as addendum (there is already a Mean monthly sunshine hours) is not clear create new article. You paste/copy data from article + add "Percent possible sunshine" and plus pastel/green colour (without new and against current consensus) and.... pretend it's your. And yes, deliberate! actions like as false of history of changes, change colours without new and against current consensus etc is vandalism. Subtropical-man talk

Well, the data isn't 'mine', and you had better rid yourself of that delusion. I took the %sun figures directly from the source provided, not using a third-party website for daily sunrise/sunset times and making a borderline WP:OR/WP:SYNTH calculation myself. "My master, Annatar the Great, bids thee welcome!" 21:41, 24 May 2014 (UTC)
  1. Why create separate templates? It is unnecessary.
  2. You must write in description of the changes the data transferred (moved) from the article "X", eventually + data of "y" (for example "Percent possible sunshine").

  1. I don't have to answer any of your questions.
  2. No idea what you mean, and since I'm not removing data, I don't have to explain anything. "My master, Annatar the Great, bids thee welcome!" 21:48, 24 May 2014 (UTC)
Again:
  1. Why create separate templates? It is unnecessary.
  2. This is one of examples of "removing data" from article [1]: -3,547kbbytes (-3,5KB created by other users).
  3. Immediately stop! To this changes, mass remove data from articles, create many new templates must to be consensus.

# Not answering your question here.

# That's 3,547 bytes (not KB, 210 or 1,024 times larger) of code removed and transferred elsewhere; if anything, that cleans things up and is an improvement. It still appears the same, more or less. "My master, Annatar the Great, bids thee welcome!" 22:00, 24 May 2014 (UTC)

I correct it, 3,547bytes (3,5KB), better? This is a detail.
You can not remove data from very many articles and create many new templates without consensus. To this changes must to be discussion and consensus. Necessarily!!! Subtropical-man talk

I don't know what delusions you are operating under, but the tables are NOT being removed. "My master, Annatar the Great, bids thee welcome!" 22:07, 24 May 2014 (UTC)
Please stop trolling. Again: You can not remove/move (for example: [2], [3], [4].......) data from very many articles and create many new templates without consensus. If this applies to one or two articles, ok but you make changes on a large scale. To this changes must to be discussion and consensus. Necessarily!!! Subtropical-man talk

Funny, considering I've enacted transclusion of templates for years without any opposition from sane users, and have even been thanked recently (one more here [5]). This is obviously tacit consensus from a few dozen editors (hundreds or even thousands) who watch these city articles. Thus I will not abate until all primary climatological sites are templated. Your username

I recognized the literary reference immediately when I saw your name pop up in the Las Vegas weatherbox template's revision history. First of all, awesome username. That's honestly the #1 reason I came to your talk page — I'm a long-time fan of Tolkien's works, and it's great to see other people appreciating the wonder that is Middle-earth.

But when I read your talk page banner, I noticed the following disclaimer:

Unfortunately, I'm going to have to refute this assertion.

Your username does indeed directly reference Sauron as the Lieutenant of the Dark Lord Morgoth, and so I take no issue there. As for your signature, there is a bit of a discrepancy in how it presents you. It is an obvious reference to a line spoken by the Mouth of Sauron in the film adaptation of The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (more specifically, a deleted scene); the only difference is that you replace the name "Sauron" with "Annatar" (which is faithful to the source material, seeing as "Sauron" is actually a derogatory term derived from the Quenya language). Basically, if taken as being spoken in the first-person, your signature portrays you as the Mouth of Sauron rather than the Dark Lord himself. Therefore, it is not quite "equivalent to [your] username", as you have claimed it to be.

But I digress. That's a minor triviality, and it should not detract from my primary reason for posting here — to commend you on an awesome username. Kurtis (talk) 15:06, 9 June 2014 (UTC)
