September 2014

You currently appear to be engaged in an edit war according to the reverts you have made on Shades of Deep Purple. Users are expected to collaborate with others, to avoid editing disruptively, and to try to reach a consensus rather than repeatedly undoing other users' edits once it is known that there is a disagreement.

Please be particularly aware that Wikipedia's policy on edit warring states:

  1. Edit warring is disruptive regardless of how many reverts you have made.
  2. Do not edit war even if you believe you are right.

If you find yourself in an editing dispute, use the article's talk page to discuss controversial changes; work towards a version that represents consensus among editors. You can post a request for help at an appropriate noticeboard or seek dispute resolution. In some cases it may be appropriate to request temporary page protection. If you engage in an edit war, you may be blocked from editing. Radiopathy •talk• 15:11, 24 September 2014 (UTC)

What do you mean by ‘more evidence to the quote’? I just removed the quotation marks and replaced the <blockquote> markers with {{quote}}. Esszet (talk) 00:02, 5 May 2015 (UTC)

If you like the {{quote}} template better than the <blockquote> is not a problem, but you should not remove the quotation marks that identify the sentence as something out of a text. It's clearly stated in Wikipedia:Manual of Style#Punctuation. Lewismaster (talk) 06:32, 5 May 2015 (UTC)
If you look at Wikipedia:Manual of Style#Block_quotations, you'll see that it says not to enclose block quotations in quotation marks. Esszet (talk) 12:50, 5 May 2015 (UTC)
It appears you are right and I'm wrong. It doesn't make much sense to me to put quotation marks before some quotations and not before others, but probably it was discussed in one of the infinite chats about these minutiae clogging Wiki talk pages. Change it back if you want. Lewismaster (talk) 18:25, 6 May 2015 (UTC)

Well, isn't this unfortunate. I was hoping I could get a copy of 33 1/3's new book on the album before it got reviewed (and it's coming out September 24.) No matter, I shall use that to help me. Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. New Wave of British Heavy Metal

Parsing issue

The problem with this is that it forces the reader to read the sentence twice to parse it correctly—the verb seems to be missing on first reading, forcing the reader to go back and re-read once they figure out the sentence structure. Curly Turkey 🍁 ¡gobble! 22:47, 12 April 2016 (UTC)

@User:Curly Turkey - The whole sentence as you rewrote it doesn't work for me. I'm going back to an older revision. Lewismaster (talk) 05:58, 13 April 2016 (UTC)
If you don't like my rewrite, fine, but the sentence there now is quite the clunker. Curly Turkey 🍁 ¡gobble! 06:06, 13 April 2016 (UTC)

NWOBHM

Mate please don't misunderstand me. I'm not trying to insult you or undermine the article. I think that you've done some excellent work with it. If anything I'm trying to do the 'constructive criticism' thing, so that it gets through with undeniable scrutiny of it. The Curly 'issues' are borderline WP:BATTLEGROUND IMPO, in the end anyway, and he has been quite rude about it, again in the end. I'm also offering to help with the Wikilinks concern raised by Lingzhi, as it doe's have a lot of Blue through it, but then again so do some of the other GA and FA I've come across.
Anyway, I think it is coming along well.

Nürö G'däÿ 02:23, 19 April 2016 (UTC)
No offense taken. Civil discussion is always welcomed, but being this my first attempt at FA, I did not expect such a barrage of objections and this level of unpleasantness. Thank you for your offer, I will answer Lingzhi in due time. Lewismaster (talk) 08:26, 19 April 2016 (UTC)

an extremely helpful script

  • You can find an extremely helpful script at User:Ucucha/HarvErrors. I can't edit without it. Seriously. I used to spend hours checking wat it checks and flags automatically.  Lingzhi ♦ (talk) 16:38, 27 April 2016 (UTC)
Thank you! Installed and working great! Lewismaster (talk) 16:57, 27 April 2016 (UTC)
    • I completely reordered one paragraph; please see if you think it's OK. Sorry about the umbrella/blanket thing but "blanket term" is actually correct, while "umbrella term" is (IMO) less so... I would explain but the wife is calling me. :-)  Lingzhi ♦ (talk) 12:23, 30 April 2016 (UTC)
Blanket is fine. I checked your new paragraph and changed something to include acts like Thin Lizzy, UFO and Judas Priest in the list of successful inspirational bands. Lewismaster (talk) 17:59, 30 April 2016 (UTC)

Inaccurate Support count may reduce reviews?

Lewismaster, IIRC the script that shows Support counts now has the metal article at 6, but I think I count 4 actual supports. 6 just feels considerably higher than 4, for some intuitive reason, and may reduce reviews since people might assume it;s a shoo-in rather than sitting on the fence between "promote" and "not promote".. Perhaps you could move the section debating "movement" to the FAC's Talk page. I think the issue is resolved, and I think that section is confusing the script... but the only question is... I seem to recall that the comments in that section were slightly ambiguous (to me at least) in another way.. for some of the comments in that section, it was unclear to me whether they were supporting "movement" or supporting the whole article.. if it is actually unclear, perhaps that needs to be clarified (?).. anyhow, good luck  Lingzhi ♦ (talk) 01:21, 14 May 2016 (UTC)

I don't know how the IIRC script that you mentioned works, but I counted 5 supports for the article: Graham Beards (at the very beginning), 3family6, Tony1, Ceoil and Mirokado. The only one who appears to support only the "movement" term is Nuro. I'll try to ask him and the others who were in that discussion to clarify their positions. Lewismaster (talk) 17:47, 14 May 2016 (UTC)
IIRC means "if I recall correctly". With 5 supports incl. ceoil and graham, I think you're a shoo-in. Congrats.  Lingzhi ♦ (talk) 01:18, 15 May 2016 (UTC)
Re Barnstar: Ha ha I spent more time giving you grief than helping you. And you don't have the bronze star yet. But thanks for the Barnstar anyhow... Cheers. [Ps it might be just about time to archive this talk page... perhaps... maybe...]  Lingzhi ♦ (talk) 13:06, 15 May 2016 (UTC)
It was lively discussion, but you gave me more good advice than grief. You improved the text of the article and made me discover scripts and templates. That's your barnstar for sure! Lewismaster (talk) 21:12, 15 May 2016 (UTC)

() thanks and congrats again. I have a question. In the sentence below, what does "bands of the first group" mean? Does it mean American bands?
"This style, which resembled that of mainstream American acts, was favoured by the media and found a larger acceptance among the British audience after the peak of the movement in 1981, becoming prevalent when bands of the first group also adopted it."  Lingzhi ♦ (talk) 03:45, 17 May 2016 (UTC)

"The first group" refers to the bands which adopted the 'fast & furious' style described before the 'melodic' style. When Pyromania achieved success in the US, bands such as Saxon, Girlschool, Tank, Tokyo Blade, etc. tried to imitate Def Leppard's sound introducing melodies and synths in their music. Lewismaster (talk) 07:09, 17 May 2016 (UTC)

Hey, been extremely busy with work and haven't had any time to do anything else but sleep, so I put a very quick support up via my phone when I saw your post. Did I correctly notice that it has been approved? If so good work man. Nürö G'DÄŸ MÄTË 21:58, 20 May 2016 (UTC)

Thank you for your support and participation, Nuro. The article was finally promoted, but it was a long and rough ride. Lewismaster (talk) 06:16, 21 May 2016 (UTC)

A barnstar for you!

The Writer's Barnstar
I want to commend you for you work on New wave of British heavy metal article. I learned so much from reading it. The article is not only comprehensive and informative, but the language is so vivid and evocative--the way it brings the whole social context of the time period to life--you have rendered it so well--the whole way it expresses the connection with the unemployment in England at the time (now in 20016 we may end up seeing a new rock movement called "Brexit rock"!). Taking on a project this large is a Herculean task and it takes so much to make something like this possible. You have reached the top of Mount Everest, and I hope that this little star helps you savor in this joyful moment. Garagepunk66 (talk) 07:37, 24 July 2016 (UTC)
By, the way I noticed, when reading your user page, that you are a teacher. I am one too. Garagepunk66 (talk) 07:45, 24 July 2016 (UTC)

IMAGINOS

I understand your concern with the editing of the Imaginos album, but please feel no hardships towards it. I did read in a text that at some point, there was a saxophonist listed on the album. I must have simply mis-placed the name/location of the musician, as well as the source material (also, Hirschberg did indeed play other instruments, thus his involvement with Albert Bouchard on his solo works). Also, if I may ask, why are you so obsessed with the page? I'm certainly not disgracing it in any way, shape or form, I just accidentally marked an incorrect source page. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Manowich (talkcontribs) 16:27, 13 September 2016 (UTC)

This article is on my watch list because I worked on it for a long time and had it promoted to Good status. I found out with a little research that Hirshberg is an old acquaintance of A. Bouchard and a member of the Brain Surgeons. You still need to find a source (maybe in the text you mentioned) to demonstrate that he recorded sax in the sessions for Imaginos. This is the way that it should be done for the credits of every album if the musicians are not listed in the official liner notes. Lewismaster (talk) 17:33, 13 September 2016 (UTC)

Viking metal FAC

My first nomination of Viking metal for FAC was failed due to a lack of interest from reviewers. I don't know if this would interest you, but you are a fan of heavy metal music. If you like, please see Wikipedia:Featured article candidates/Viking metal/archive2 and leave a comment. Thanks, --3family6 (Talk to me | See what I have done) 02:37, 1 November 2016 (UTC)

I read your article when it was still in the peer review state and I found it very detailed and technical, but in need of better accesibility and of an extensive review. Unfortunately, the time I spend on WP is now mainly limited to maintainance of articles on my watch. If I find time from my other commitments to review your article, I'll let you know. Proposed deletion of A Whiter Shade of Pale (album)

The article A Whiter Shade of Pale (album) has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Non-notable compilation, no sources

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Anvil

  • I've seen bits and pieces of the Anvil documentary on youtube. Many of your NWOBHM heroes talk at length about this interesting (but non-British) band. Cheers.  Lingzhi ♦ (talk) 09:22, 14 January 2017 (UTC)
I watched the movie and found it both sad and funny, and those are the sentiments it wanted to stir. Lars Ulrich interview is very interesting and talks at length about NWOBHM, the British press and what being a metal fan in North America meant at that time. Lewismaster (talk) 18:58, 14 January 2017 (UTC)
I listened to the Anvil song "Mothra" on youtube. The guys on the documentary, like Lars and Slash, kept pushing the image of wide-eyed perplexity about why Anvil never made it. To me there's an elephant in the room: it's painfully obvious why. The guitars are OK, not the very best but certainly good enough. Ditto drums (I only listened to one song; Ulrich kept talking about how awesome the drums were. Maybe I missed that part). The lyrics are... OK-ish. Childish, but there are probably better ones out there. But oh man, the singing is just terrible. Other metal groups like AC/DC and Metallica sound good while they're sounding "bad". Anvil just sounds bad. Anyhow, later.  Lingzhi ♦ (talk) 22:04, 14 January 2017 (UTC)
I agree with you for Lips' vocals. Their drum patterns were apparently quite innovative for the time. The audience and the market gave the ultimate judgement and Anvil remained an insignificant band. Lewismaster (talk) 09:03, 15 January 2017 (UTC)
Then how is it that Robb Reiner is Robb Redirect-to-Anvil? Anyhow, I'll leave you alone. Congrats on TFA.  Lingzhi ♦ (talk) 09:17, 15 January 2017 (UTC)

Thank you, I checked it out and found it OK. Lewismaster (talk) 18:59, 14 January 2017 (UTC)

Okay, I've reverted some changes. I'll be the first to admit that my changes reflect personal preferences (rooted in advice from a variety of writing gurus) and a style that's common at TFA but not always at FAC ... and people seem to be okay with that philosophy so far. A few rules of thumb in this style are:

  • People get bored talking about the names of things ... don't say something was called something, just pick the most common, understandable, and justifiable names for things, and go with that without explanation or hedging.
  • Every movement generates a renewal in the genre, so don't say that.
  • I'm not insisting on the "escapist themes" sentence ... but there are a lot of readers out there who really have no idea what heavy metal is, much less the new wave, and a description of some sort will help them to make sense of what they're reading. Much of academic writing is all about "genres" and "movements" without ever describing what they're talking about ... because, of course, the scholars don't need that description. But the Main Page gets 10M hits a day, and many of those people do need descriptions.
  • On the order of the last sentence, the gurus are in complete agreement: the usual structure of a sentence (and of larger units as well) is: context, then payload. Light, then heavy. (Also: known, then unknown, but that doesn't apply in this case.) That the movement was able to generate international stars reads very much like a payload to me, so that's the element that should go last.
  • Hope that helps clarify my point of view. Thoughts? - Dank (push to talk) 15:44, 18 January 2017 (UTC)
I understand you point of view and respect your expertise in the matter. This is my first TFA and I had no knowledge of the appropriate writing style or the philosophy behind it. And who am I to go against such rules? I gladly leave to you the task of setting up the text. Thank you. Lewismaster (talk) 18:56, 18 January 2017 (UTC)
Okay, I just didn't want you to think that the process is arbitrary, or doesn't respect the wishes of writers. I look forward to more of your work at FAC! - Dank (push to talk) 19:51, 18 January 2017 (UTC)

Track listings / total length

Why are you removing the total_length= field from track listings? Mac Dreamstate (talk) 18:00, 19 August 2017 (UTC)

Template:Track listing recite about total length: "Used to display the total length of the record at the bottom of the list. Not necessary in most cases (as that information will usually be covered by an infobox), but useful in some (e.g. releases with a lot of individual discs)." I usually use it when there are bonus tracks in a sub-template to indicate an augmented length, not on a regular LP. Lewismaster (talk) 18:05, 19 August 2017 (UTC)
Track listings have nothing to do with infoboxes—plenty of information in the latter is repeated in Personnel sections without issue (producers, etc.) Therefore there is no reason to remove a useful field from stable articles which have had them for years—in some cases, almost a decade. The MOS doesn't say anything to discourage its use, so I'll keep on reinstating it at Second Heat. Mac Dreamstate (talk) 18:09, 19 August 2017 (UTC)
The fact that there are errors not corrected for years doesn't mean that we should keep them as they are. When I read "Not necessary in most cases" I understand that "total length" should be used sparingly and only only in the cases indicated. Probably a discussion about this matter happened in the past and a compromise was reached for the use of the parameter as it is now written down in Template:Track listing. For example, a correct use of the parameter is in Led Zeppelin II, where it is used to indicate the length of a bonus disc. And there are countless albums that don't use the parameter, simply because it should not be used. The MoS says nothing about the parameter, but does not show it in the track listing examples provided. You could make a request to change the use of the parameter and extend it to every track listing of every album, but until then I don't think that it should be used as you are doing now. Lewismaster (talk) 18:34, 19 August 2017 (UTC)
Then I'll definitely bring it up at the template talk page and challenge that description—I've used it on countless track listings since at least 2009 and until now I've never seen it being actively removed. Could you at least agree to not zap any more of them until I/we get feedback at the talk page? Mac Dreamstate (talk) 18:40, 19 August 2017 (UTC)
Yes, of course. Lewismaster (talk) 18:50, 19 August 2017 (UTC)

DYK for Deep Purple (album)

On 11 October 2017, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Deep Purple (album), which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that the song "Why Didn't Rosemary?" from the 1969 album Deep Purple was inspired by the film Rosemary's Baby? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Deep Purple (album). You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, Deep Purple (album)), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

the "North America" mistake

So, apparently it looks like you are one of the guys who regularly describes record releases in the United States as "North America" releases. Please stop making this mistake. There are more than 30 countries and territories in North America. Most of the countries in Central America and the Caribbean are forgotten by by those who talk about "North America". Records released in each country can be and usually are different. US and or Canadian releases rarely have any record label similarity to releases in Mexico or other parts of North America. Billboard is a United States chart, not a North American chart. It is sometimes common for Canadians to describe the United States and Canada as "North America" even thought this is obviously wrong because it leaves out most of the countries in the continent. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 97.126.67.201 (talk) 08:46, 19 October 2017 (UTC)

You are right. That was mostly something that I found when I began editing and was left as it was. Change them all. Lewismaster (talk) 09:10, 19 October 2017 (UTC)

Disambiguation link notification for March 3

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. An automated process has detected that when you recently edited Jailbreak (album), you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Jim Fitzpatrick (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are usually incorrect, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of unrelated topics with similar titles. (Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.)

Judas Priest & NWOBHM

Sources say it was the first one. Please find some before removing the category. ~SMLTP 17:18, 6 August 2018 (UTC)

I wrote the article for the NWOBHM and it should be clear from all sources cited there that the NWOBHM was made of "new bands", which were formed between 1975 and 1985. Judas Priest were already a successful band in 1976. They may have been inspirators for some of the bands in the NWOBHM and had great sales in that period like many other "old" bands, but I think that cite them as a "New Wave of British Heavy Metal band" is not correct.
