HaleBot

Hello, Legoktm,

I'm so grateful for the new bot, I really depend on that nightly database list for categories. But I'm surprised that no editors have tracked you down to ask about the updated counts for the Wikipedia:List of Wikipedians by number of edits lists. It looks like Bernstein Bot updated these daily and they haven't been updated them since Oct. 9th. I don't know how complicated it would be to incorporate this task into HaleBot's duties (I keep wanting to say Hale–Bopp!). When I came to your talk page, I expected to see editors bringing this up but it looks like I am the first. It's not a high priority for me and the work I do but some editors do like to track their own stats.

Thanks again for filling in so quickly when we lost Bernstein Bot. Liz Read! Talk! 08:43, 19 October 2022 (UTC)

@Liz: thanks for the note, I've gotten it running again. Legoktm (talk) 04:30, 20 October 2022 (UTC)
Whew, Bernstein Bot's retirement generated a lot of discussion on Wikipedia talk:List of Wikipedians by number of edits. I guess they didn't look very deeply into the change and track it back to you. I'm glad that the alarm it caused didn't spill over to your talk page. Liz Read! Talk! 05:33, 20 October 2022 (UTC)
Impressive save there Legoktm! Now, any chance you can help save Huggle?;-) --DB1729talk 16:17, 20 October 2022 (UTC)
@DB1729: my specialty these days seems to be poking people and getting them to reply after months or years of inactivity :-) In any case, I posted an analysis on the task. I think this is a case where a lot of people (including myself) have carried this forward by doing the necessary thing every once in a while masking the fact it has no real maintainer. Now we've hit a concrete deadline that isn't a quick 5-minute fix, revealing the truth regarding the lack of maintainers.
It wasn't clear to me that people are still relying on Huggle, I had (mistakenly) assumed that most people had moved to in-browser anti-vandalism tools like RedWarn and SWViewer. If people want to keep Huggle alive, some more maintainers will need to be found. My recommendation would be to team up and pool resources with the people working on other tools though. Legoktm (talk) 21:59, 20 October 2022 (UTC)
Thanks for the reply and I appreciate you looking into it.
For some reason I thought RW wasn't compatible with my Mac, but I just installed it and it seems to be up and running fine. I will check out SWViewer as well if we lose HG. Cheers! DB1729talk 01:09, 21 October 2022 (UTC)
Just now saw the update. It looks like your efforts have paid off again! Huge thanks to both!:) DB1729talk 05:49, 4 November 2022 (UTC)

Thank you so much for HaleBot doing now updates on the "list of Wikipedians by number of edits"! Cyfal (talk) 20:02, 21 October 2022 (UTC)

Always precious

Ten years ago, you were found precious. That's what you are, always. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 08:25, 3 November 2022 (UTC)

Thanks @Gerda Arendt, really amazing how time flies when you're having fun :-) Legoktm (talk) 01:44, 5 November 2022 (UTC)

Rescaled script

Hi,

I have tried using using the User:Ronhjones/rescaled.js script as suggested at Category:Non-free files with orphaned versions more than 7 days old needing human review and found it only works for some files when I use it. Sadly Rohjones has passed away. The note indicated it was based on your work so I was wondering if I could get some help from you. For many files, it works exactly as expected. I see the messages about the template being removed and the old revisions being deleted. But for some files nothing happens. I am using Chrome on Windows 10 with uBlock Origin and Wayback Machine as the only non-Google extensions. I've tried disabling the extensions and the script will still not process the file. I switched to MS-Edge browser which I usually don't use and found the script will still not process the file. I also have tried on a Samsung Galaxy Tab S6 Lite using Chrome and the script will not process. An example of a file where this happens is File:The Boy in the River.jpg. Any clues or am I just going to have to handle those manually? Pinging @Liz: who seems to have no issue using the script. -- Whpq (talk) 02:45, 7 November 2022 (UTC)

@Whpq: you should probably use my version of the script, I fixed this bug last year. Comparing his script with mine, I think the modifications he made ended up being re-incorporated into my version. Legoktm (talk) 04:20, 7 November 2022 (UTC)
Thanks. I'll give it a go. -- Whpq (talk) 04:40, 7 November 2022 (UTC)
Just tried it on File:The Boy in the River.jpg which was not working before. Worked perfectly! Thanks! -- Whpq (talk) 04:42, 7 November 2022 (UTC)

Foreign language redirects to Hungary

Hello Lego, did you consider my retarget vote at WP:Redirects for discussion/Log/2022 October 27#Foreign language redirects to Hungary, and what was your opinion? You may also enhance your closing statement at the RfD. Alternately you can revert / relist if you wish another closer to take a call on it. Jay 💬 09:28, 5 November 2022 (UTC)

Hi @Jay, I did consider your retarget comment, but did not find it to be stronger than the delete comments. Do you think there something I missed when weighing votes? Legoktm (talk) 01:15, 6 November 2022 (UTC)
There was only one delete argument, which both voters seconded. My vote was not about the current target at all, but was a retarget suggestion. The retarget vote nullifies the delete votes. Why did you feel the retarget vote was not worth considering? Jay 💬 14:49, 6 November 2022 (UTC)
@Jay: I don't think I'd go as far as saying it "nullifies the delete votes", but I can see where you're coming from now, it certainly makes sense to give people more time to consider your retargetting proposal. I'll relist it now. Legoktm (talk) 04:27, 7 November 2022 (UTC)
Thanks, maybe nullifies is the wrong word, when used generally. I would say a retarget vote and a delete (because of something about the redirect's relationship with the current target) vote are mutually exclusive and cannot be compared. Jay 💬 14:06, 7 November 2022 (UTC)

BREAKING: local goof can't figure out pageview extension

I am trying to carry out some diabolical schemes for the Signpost and part of this is to make a template that gives view count for a page. Not a graph of the views over time, just the view count itself, as a number. I have been trying to mess around with this for a while and figure out something that works, but I am not very familiar with Lua, nor with the innards of the PageViews extension. However, I notice that your name is on this, so maybe I can flail around pathetically on your talk page and you'll take pity and tell me how it works...

Is there any way to create a template, such that:

  • {{PageviewsNumber|page=Exploding whale|start=2022-01-03|end=2022-09-01}}

produces something like

  • 25,392

or am I just out of luck? jp×g 13:38, 6 November 2022 (UTC)

@JPxG: off the top of my head, there's no way to get a plain number. At best I think you could trick Vega into just outputting a number instead of a graph.
The main reason the Graph stuff is able to do this is because it ends up being rendered client-side, so there's no need to deal with cache invalidation when the value changes. Legoktm (talk) 06:16, 7 November 2022 (UTC)
Hmm. Thanks for the help. This is about the impression I ended up getting -- there's basically no way to get pageview API data into wikitext. Sad, but true: I suppose we will have to try another approach. jp×g 03:13, 11 November 2022 (UTC)

Legobot's GAN functions

Hi -- just a reminder to shut down Legobot's GAN functions when you get a chance. The earlier the better, if possible --- I'm out of town from the 22nd for a week and would like to make sure the new bot is running as smoothly as possible before then. If you would drop me a note or reply here when you do shut it down, that would be great. Thanks. Mike Christie (talk - contribs - library) 17:34, 17 November 2022 (UTC)

@Mike Christie: I've disabled the Legobot GA tasks! Legoktm (talk) 19:53, 17 November 2022 (UTC)
Well, not the best start. It decided to transclude a ton of GA reviews. I've killed it and will take a look. Mike Christie (talk - contribs - library) 20:26, 17 November 2022 (UTC)
Hi again -- can you restart Legobot? I've reverted the GAN page to the Legobot version in case any of the formatting is important to Legobot. ChristieBot is transcluding a GA review if the article has been moved, so it no longer has the same name. Rather than try to do a quick fix I think it's best if we run Legobot again while I figure out how to test it. There were a couple of simpler bugs too, and I can fix those at the same time. Sorry! Will let you know when I'm ready to try again. Mike Christie (talk - contribs - library) 21:43, 17 November 2022 (UTC)
Striking the request -- found what seems to be a quick fix, and am trying again now. Sorry about the whiplash! Will post here again if necessary. Mike Christie (talk - contribs - library) 22:40, 17 November 2022 (UTC)
Awesome! I am rooting for ChristieBot and tbh I think people will understand if it's broken and bumpy for a short while as you roll out the new bot knowing that it will provide better service down the road :) Legoktm (talk) 03:08, 18 November 2022 (UTC)
Thanks! Doesn’t look too bad so far. Mike Christie (talk - contribs - library) 04:32, 18 November 2022 (UTC)

An editor has asked for a deletion review of Astros's combined World Series no-hitter. Because you closed the deletion discussion for this page, speedily deleted it, or otherwise were interested in the page, you might want to participate in the deletion review. — Red-tailed hawk (nest) 03:41, 24 November 2022 (UTC)

HaleBot

Hello, Legoktm,

Just wanted to post a note that HaleBot missed an update to Wikipedia:Database reports/Empty categories page. It's only notable because the bot has otherwise been very reliable. If it updates the page in the next hour or two, I'll remove this notice but I thought I'd let you know in case some gears need to be oiled or a crankshaft turned. Thanks! Liz Read! Talk! 01:12, 22 November 2022 (UTC)

No, still no update. Liz Read! Talk! 04:20, 22 November 2022 (UTC)
Of course this only happens when I'm traveling :) ...I'll be able to poke it later tonight. Legoktm (talk) 15:59, 22 November 2022 (UTC)
Of course! Thanks for taking some time away from your trip to check on this. Safe travels! Liz Read! Talk! 21:11, 22 November 2022 (UTC)
Fixed. Still investigating why it got stuck in the first place... Legoktm (talk) 04:22, 23 November 2022 (UTC)
Thanks, there was an update to Wikipedia:Database reports/Empty categories last night but it skipped the 01:02 UTC update today again. Will you have to make a manual request/call to generate a bot report? Because that would be a hassle, especially if you are still on the road. Since your userpage implies you are in the U.S., I understand how the holiday will impact responding to requests like this one. But, hey, maybe it can offer you a break from family/friend togetherness time! Take care, Liz Read! Talk! 01:13, 24 November 2022 (UTC)
It updated at 4:00 UTC since that's 24 hours after the last time it ran, I fudged it back to 1:00 UTC for the next runs. Next week I'll work on a code-level fix so it always runs at a fixed time. Is 1:00 UTC your preferred time for that report? Or would you rather have it at some other time? Legoktm (talk) 04:23, 24 November 2022 (UTC)

Why did you close the deletion discussion for Astros's combined World Series no-hitter without consensus?

The discussion did not have a consensus for a deletion and you made that decision by yourself. What is the purpose of a discussion if you solely get to make that decision? Esolo5002 (talk) 21:05, 18 November 2022 (UTC)

Hi @Esolo5002. Determining consensus is based on evaluating the strength of the arguments made, not just a headcount. My close is based on the delete votes citing and being backed up by the relevant guideline, which is WP:NSPORTSEVENT. Many of the keep votes were not policy based, and I addressed why the (IMO) strongest keep vote by Red-tailed hawk was appropriately refuted. Do you disagree with that? Legoktm (talk) 21:12, 18 November 2022 (UTC)
With respect, there can be multiple notability criteria that apply to a particular article. Per WP:N, so long as an article does not violate WP:NOT, we presume it notable if it meets either the general notability guideline... or the criteria outlined in a subject-specific notability guideline. There were numerous individuals, including myself, who believe that this passes WP:NEVENT in a straightforward analysis, and you seem to have inappropriately discounted the arguments that the article subject meets the criteria outlined in that subject-specific notability guideline entirely in your closing statement. In that light, would kindly ask that you self-revert and re-open that discussion for closure. — Red-tailed hawk (nest) 04:14, 23 November 2022 (UTC)
Specifically looking at NEVENT, how does it not fall afoul of WP:ROUTINE, as Muboshgu refuted in the AfD by showing that the same amount of coverage existed for Game 5? (Sorry for being brief, I wasn't expecting to be online this weekend, only popped in to check in on a misbehaving bot. I probably won't reply until Sunday unless it's urgent. Happy Holidays!) Legoktm (talk) 06:15, 23 November 2022 (UTC)
With respect, you are confusing two things here. (1) There was no reference by any delete !voter with respect to WP:ROUTINE. If you're basing the deletion on the basis that you think that the sources are not more than routine coverage, then this is a WP:SUPERVOTE. (2) I did not claim that my list was extensive; I claimed that my list indicated substantial coverage by diverse reliable sources around the planet (i.e. WP:COVERAGE). My argument (and those made by others) also draw support from WP:EVENTCRIT#2, which you did not address at all. I will be filing a deletion review accordingly. — Red-tailed hawk (nest) 02:37, 24 November 2022 (UTC)
I think it's reasonable to interpret Muboshgu's reply to you in the context of WP:ROUTINE, even if they didn't explicitly mention it. In any case, thanks for filing the DR, that's probably the best way forward here. Legoktm (talk) 04:27, 24 November 2022 (UTC)
