Question about COMMONNAME

Hello. Sorry to bother you. I want to hear your opinion about something, since you are an admin but also, understands how Pro wrestling works. Everytime a wrestler changes his name, the IPs and users wants to change the name of the article. As you saw, Paige/Saraya. Most of them argues WP:NAMECHANGES, since most reports uses the current name in reports. But this rule forgets the weight of the career. For example, Paige worked for years as Paige. Had a movie about her, appeared on Total Divas. So, a few weeks as Saraya doesn't equal her work as Paige. Same with Big Show. He works as commentator as Paul Wight, but her previous work as Big Show (20 years, world titles, main evented WrestleMania, some films) has more weight. My main complain is WP:NAMECHANGES "Sometimes the subject of an article will undergo a change of name". Sometimes, but in pro wrestling is quite often. In 10 years, Jon Huber had 5 names (Brodie Lee, Luke Harper, Harper, Luke Harper and Mr. Brodie Lee) for example. So, what do you think? HHH Pedrigree (talk) 19:15, 1 November 2022 (UTC)

Hi! I think these guidelines are intentionally obtuse. My view is that we should have an article at a name which is most likely to be understood by the most people. COMMONNAME suggests we should have articles at the most commonly used name, but there is some nuance. The way I interpret it is that NAMECHANGES means we should give more weight to new names, but we shouldn't just change the name of things because the subject has. I still think Luke Harper is the most recognisable name in the list you gave me. Sometimes using new names is done with the idea that the subject will be more recognisable by that name over time. However, in this case it isn't true (as they died). There is an argument that someone who changes their name a lot should actually just be on their actual name, which I wouldn't be against either. Lee Vilenski (talkcontribs) 18:26, 2 November 2022 (UTC)
Yes, I think it's a case-per-case situation. For example, Nikki Cross/ASH. She wrestled for years as Cross. Then, she changed to ASH and people suddenly wanted to change the name, despite her previous career as Cross. As ASH, she won the Money in the bank, The Women's Tag Ttitle, the Women's World title, so she has a lot of exposure. Back to Nikki Cross and people want to change the name again based on "she has a previous carrer as Cross", then, the article shoulnd't be changed in first place. --HHH Pedrigree (talk) 15:13, 4 November 2022 (UTC)

WikiCup 2022 November newsletter

The 2022 WikiCup has drawn to a close with the final round going down to the wire. The 2022 champion is

  • England Lee Vilenski (1752 points), who won in 2020 and was runner up in both 2019 and last year. In the final round he achieved 3 FAs and 15 GAs, mostly on cue sports. He was closely followed by
  • Kingdom of Scotland Bloom6132 (1732), who specialised in "In the news" items and DYKs, and who has reached the final round of the Cup for the past three years. Next was
  • Zulu (International Code of Signals) BennyOnTheLoose (1238), another cue sports enthusiast, also interested in songs, followed by
  • New York City Muboshgu (1082), an "In the news" contributor, a seasoned contestant who first took part in the Cup ten years ago. Other finalists were
  • Sammi Brie (930), who scored with a featured article, good articles and DYKs on TV and radio stations,
  • United Nations Kavyansh.Singh (370), who created various articles on famous Americans, including an FA on Louis H. Bean, famed for his prediction of election outcomes. Next was
  • Chicago PCN02WPS (292), who scored with good articles and DYKs on sporting and other topics and
  • Toronto Z1720 (25) who had DYKs on various topics including historic Canadians.

During the WikiCup, contestants achieved 37 featured articles, 349 good articles, 360 featured article reviews, 683 good article reviews and 480 In the news items, so Wikipedia has benefited greatly from the activities of WikiCup competitors. Well done everyone! All those who reached the final round will receive awards and the following special awards will be made, based on high performance in particular areas of content creation and review. So that the finalists do not have an undue advantage, these prizes are awarded to the competitor who scored the highest in any particular field in a single round, or the overall leader in this field.

  • England Lee Vilenski wins the featured article prize, for a total of 6 FAs during the course of the competition and 3 in the final round.
  • United Nations Kavyansh.Singh wins the featured list prize, for 3 FLs in round 2.
  • Adam Cuerden wins the featured picture prize, for 39 FPs during the competition.
  • Toronto Z1720 wins the featured article reviewer prize, for 35 FARs in round 4.
  • New York (state) Epicgenius wins the good article prize, for 32 GAs in round 1.
  • SounderBruce wins the featured topic prize, for 4 FT articles in round 1.
  • England Lee Vilenski wins the good topic prize, for 34 GT articles in round 5.
  • Sammi Brie wins the good article reviewer prize, for 71 GARs overall.
  • Sammi Brie wins the Did you know prize, for 30 DYKs in round 3 and 106 overall.
  • Kingdom of Scotland Bloom6132 wins the In the news prize, for 106 ITNs in round 5 and 289 overall.

Next year's competition will begin on 1 January and possible changes to the rules and scoring are being discussed on the discussion page. You are invited to sign up to take part in the contest; the WikiCup is open to all Wikipedians, both novices and experienced editors, and we hope to have a good turnout for the 2023 competition. Until then, it only remains to once again congratulate our worthy winners and finalists, and thank all participants for their involvement! Hi! I do indeed write articles for cue sports. I must admit, I have looked at a few of these previously, but struggled to find third party sourcing for them. The ACBS should absolutely have an article, so I will get to that when I have time. Otherwise, the six-red continental championship might be difficult to sell without some newspaper sources or similar, but might be notable. Lee Vilenski (talkcontribs) 13:02, 16 November 2022 (UTC)

Ai: The Somnium Files Question

Hey there!

When I nominated the article for GA status, I did it with an intent to gather feedback for what to fix and what to improve on with getting the article to GA status, but based on your response, I assume that there is a different way for doing that before nominating? If there is, could you tell me what that way would be?

I'm in the middle of the transition of being a newbie and being covered by WP:GF, to trying to expand outwards to more things I like doing and things that I am passionate about, while coming out of that initial new person phase, so it's been a bit of a rough ride for me the last few days, so apologies in advance for mistakes that I have/going to make. Trust me, I am trying my best and trying to review guidelines that I need to follow when making decisions. Best, Zekerocks11 (talk) 17:45, 19 November 2022 (UTC)

Hi! You are of course free to renominate the article, but I removed the tag as if I had reviewed it, I would have failed it immediately. The reception section doesn't really cover all it should, and there are both grammatical and MOS errors in the prose. Lee Vilenski (talkcontribs) 19:40, 19 November 2022 (UTC)

Skyrush GA review

In case you missed the ping, I have brought up issues with your GA review of Skyrush at Template:Did you know nominations/Skyrush. While these problems are in the process of being resolved (and may actually be resolved by the time you see this message), they are concerning nonetheless. Sdrqaz (talk) 00:59, 10 November 2022 (UTC)

I'm confused. These seem significantly outside of the bounds of a DYK review - and if you think the GA review was poor, WP:GAR is the location. Most of the issues seem fair, such as not sourcing items as they only appear in the lede - but we shouldn't be sourcing that an item DIDN'T win an award. Lee Vilenski (talkcontribs) 07:17, 10 November 2022 (UTC)
Epicgenius has sourced that it didn't win an award, which was the proper thing to do. DYK criterion 4 states: "Within policy – Articles for DYK must conform to the core policies of Verifiability". It was my responsibility to make sure that the article followed that. I'm taking up this issue of your GA review here instead of GAR because:
  1. Alternative #3 to GAR is notifying major contributors and GAR should be a last resort, not a first resort
  2. GAR would only deal with the surface-level issue of an article not meeting the GA criteria – it does not deal with the fundamental issue of a user's reviews
  3. Evidently something has gone wrong when a DYK review is far more thorough than a GA review, and it's better to discuss that with the reviewer so that it does not occur again
Frankly, your response has worried me further. The crux of the issues with that article was that there seemed to be no/few checks being made that the material was being supported by the sources cited – it wasn't a simple case of "not sourcing items as they only appear in the lede". Given that the review seemed to concentrate on prose issues, I can't believe that this has to be said, but do you make verifiability checks for GA reviews? And did you do so in this instance? Sdrqaz (talk) 18:14, 11 November 2022 (UTC)
Hi. I'm still a bit bemused why we would require someone to source something that didn't happen. I do indeed do spot checks during a GA review, but generally only mention them when something pops up, same as I do for copyright. It's worth noting that checking every source to see if it completely covers what the text says is not part of the GA (or FA for that matter) criteria. I am glad you have found additional things that can and have been addressed. Lee Vilenski (talkcontribs) 18:44, 11 November 2022 (UTC)
Personally, I think that the previous formulation ("in every year except 2016 and 2020, Skyrush has been ranked") is subtly different to saying something like "Skyrush was ranked in 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2021, 2022" or "Skyrush was ranked in 2012–2015, 2017–2019, and 2021, 2022" because the ones in red don't say what happened in 2016 and 2020 but the green one does (or at least certainly implies it). A roughly analogous example may be a child saying that they're friends with everyone in their class except x, compared to them listing their friends. Regardless, as far as concerns for that article went, that was a minor one that I was willing to let go if Epicgenius disagreed with me. I'm aware that the prevailing practice at FAC is to do spot-checks only, but if a non-insignificant volume is getting through, then perhaps at the very least more of them should be done. Sdrqaz (talk) 12:58, 21 November 2022 (UTC)

TFA

November songs

Thank you today for 2022 Welsh Open (snooker), introduced: "It may surprise you to learn that I don't get to see a lot of professional snooker live. This was the second event I managed to get to in the last five years. A superb week in a great venue - with some images taken during the event in the article. The Welsh Open is often a good but minor event, but for two years straight has had a great narrative. The previous year's winner Jordan Brown won his first event, ranked 80th in the world. This year, perennial journeyman Joe Perry won the event, defeating the majorly in-form Ricky Walden in the quarter-finals, Jack Lisowski (who had won a match of the season contender against Ali Carter in the round prior), a serial winner Judd Trump in the final to win his second ranking event, the first being a minor 2015 Players Tour Championship Grand Final win. Perry's win was at age 47, the second oldest winner of a ranking event (at the time). A great event"! - Congratulations also to the Wikicup successes! -- Gerda Arendt (talk) 16:26, 18 November 2022 (UTC)

lad

why do you keep making pointless deletions. like what exactly is your rationale behind deleting a mention of an assist? or the fact it was the second game? please explain. i don't wish to argue, but it does often feel like your edits of the information i've added are more driven by spite than anything else, as you never ever edit things to be better but altogether remove it. Godofwarfan333 (talk) 12:22, 28 November 2022 (UTC)

Don't call me a "lad". You keep introducing items that have either undue WP:WEIGHT, editorialising (such as stating how many people were looking forward to a match), and often adding NPOV things. That combined with the mass amounts of copyright infringement in photographs, a WP:BATTLEGROUND mentality and no WP:CIVILITY doesnt look good on you. Lee Vilenski (talkcontribs) 12:29, 28 November 2022 (UTC)
huh? really? that was your first point of contention here? smh why do I bother...
stating that Argentina needed to avoid defeat wasn't NPOV or editorialising. it was an objective fact, yet you removed it. furthermore, you constantly keep reverting my edits, and have broken 3RRR. what even Godofwarfan333 (talk) 12:36, 28 November 2022 (UTC)
@Godofwarfan333: Deleting sourced content with multiple reliable references on purpose and then leaving pointless comments in the edit summary, as you just did on the article ([1]), is another proof of your lack of competence. GenoV84 (talk) 12:49, 28 November 2022 (UTC)
@GenoV84: Deleting sourced content with multiple reliable references on purpose and then leaving pointless comments in the edit summary, as you just did on the article, is proof of your lack of competence lmao. if you were even a bit self-aware you'd realise you've been doing exactly what you accuse me of doing. Godofwarfan333 (talk) 14:29, 28 November 2022 (UTC)
@Godofwarfan333: You can play the victim as much as you want; many established editors have already reverted your disruptive edits several times, for the same reason. Everyone can see that you are not here to build an encyclopedia. GenoV84 (talk) 14:47, 28 November 2022 (UTC)
