Userboxes and non-free images

Greetings. I observed that you reverted my edits that removed the non-free images from User:Kyerjay/User NAU seal and User:Kyerjay/User University of Surrey shield. Please understand that per terms of Wikipedia:Non-free_content_criteria#9, the use of non-free images outside of article space is strictly forbidden, except in a very few limited cases. Userboxes of any kind are not an exception and never have been. Whether or not a userbox is 'ruined' [1] is not a reason to retain non-free images against this policy. A person can just as well say that adding non-free content to the userbox ruins it, and it must be fixed to, if you will, 'unruin' it. Further, changing this into a template, as you suggest here, does not get around policy either. I don't mean to be harsh or rude to you in any respect, but there simply isn't any wiggle room on this policy. I am reverting your restoration of these non-free images to those userboxes as this is blatant and clear cut violation of policy. If you believe this is wrong or that the policy needs to be changed to accomodate your userboxes, I invite you to initiate a discussion at Wikipedia talk:Non-free content. If you have questions, let me know. Thanks, --Hammersoft (talk) 22:54, 21 December 2018 (UTC)

Disambiguation link notification for December 27

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. An automated process has detected that when you recently edited Charles Smith (cowboy), you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Saloon (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are usually incorrect, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of unrelated topics with similar titles. (Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.)

Rodeo area

Hi, I think I better introduce myself since you are just jumping in and changing things in the rodeo section. There are several of us over here who work in the Rodeo articles and yes that includes bull riding. We also maintain the area. Your changes will affect our articles too. However, I'm assuming good faith here and look forward to hearing from you. dawnleelynn(talk) 18:38, 17 January 2019 (UTC)

  • Hi, yes, not sure how the changes will affect you unless you want to participate - which is exactly what I want! I made a bull riding article and wanted to make more, but I wouldn't have enough time. I know the WikiProjects are useful for getting quality community editing, I was hoping to attract people, that's all, so I could start articles and not leave them sub-par because of time. Kyerjay (talk) 18:40, 17 January 2019 (UTC)
Okay, wow! I did not mention the categories, but if you want to make serious edits to them, please talk to my mentor first, Montanabw who has been here long and is quite experienced. We spent a long time setting up the current system for all of the Rodeo categories. I saw your article, yes, that's great! As far as participation, it's not really high in rodeo, but we keep hoping. I like your enthusiasm. I work on all types of articles in rodeo. I work on existing ones as well as create my own. I will definitely keep in touch with you. Also, we have been wanting to create a Rodeo Wikiproject, but I have never done one before. Maybe later... if you are wanting me to add to Mason Lowe, I could, as I know about him. I know he is one of three to get a qualified ride off Smooth Operator for example. What kinds of articles do you want to create? Riders, bulls, both? There are many articles that need work in existence already in bull ridng. Thanks much, feel free to contact me anytime, I do most of the bull riding work here. dawnleelynn(talk) 18:59, 17 January 2019 (UTC)
Thanks, will definitely be in contact! I don't think I'll be touching the categories already in existence, maybe using them. Thanks for the advice — I heard about (and then watched) the ride on Smooth Operator, but I didn't know where to put it on the page. If there's anything odd, please reorganize or help point me right? I'm interested in bull riding culture, and will happily aim to improve pages that already exist! Kyerjay (talk) 19:03, 17 January 2019 (UTC)
That's great. It sounds like we can really help each other. I've got an appointment, but I will check out that bit on Smooth Operator later and respond. He's my favorite bull, which is why I know so much about him actually. dawnleelynn(talk) 19:37, 17 January 2019 (UTC)
  • Hi, I joined your project too. I'm not around a lot, but I am glad to help. I put a comment over there. We just redid the rodeo categories over the last couple of years and I hope you don't object if I do a little fixing there. THe categorization scheme is kind of overseen by some wikipedians who do nothing but categorize articles and they kind of want us to do things certain ways...which most of the time I try to do. Montanabw(talk) 20:13, 17 January 2019 (UTC)
No problem at all, please make amendments and improvements where you can! Kyerjay (talk) 20:16, 17 January 2019 (UTC)
Hi, I am afraid we have a bit of an issue on the Rodeo category. It's showing talk pages and wikiproject categories. I am pretty sure it wasn't doing that before. So, if you could address that before any more tagging. I also need to ask you to keep the addition of bull riding wikiprojects to strictly bull riding articles which I laid out before in that other article I pinged you in. Bull riders, bulls, bull organizations, bull "rodeos" and events like the PBR and CBR, etc., bull halls of fame. And not ProRodeo articles, events and organizations that serve multiple events, other type of performers and so on. I still am going to have to fix parameters when you are done, but that's life. For example, for every list article you tag, I will have to go in and change the class parameter to "List". And, yes that does matter. And now another VERY important item I just discovered. Please stop tagging articles that are NOT rodeo articles. Check the article page and if it does not have a rodeo category, do not tag it. Such as wild west shows, and Tom Mix is not a bull rider, etc. You have a Rodeo category structure laid out for you to follow; so it would be very easy to avoid tagging any non-rodeo articles. And yes, there is policy regarding correctly tagging articles; this is not just something I want done. It is not proper to tag articles with subjects that do not apply to them. There are several of us here who have made sure all of the rodeo articles have categorized properly. Thanks a bunch!! dawnleelynn(talk) 07:21, 19 January 2019 (UTC)
@Dawnleelynn:Hey. Hmm, I think you're wrong about the categorizing, in a way - Wild West shows, for example, feature rodeo events. So tag it for Rodeo because maybe someone involved in the project would like to work on those bits of those articles. Now, more the reason I'm replying is to say I won't be anymore. From your first message that, effectively, said "hey, maybe don't edit these things you like because me and my friends do that", I felt like y'all hidden rodeo edit team was on something of a high horse. Remember anyone can edit. An experienced editor could come notice your meticulous categorization and think "hmm, I can do it better". And you've gotta respect that, as long as they're not breaking the rules - and your rules don't count. Anyone can edit however they want, you can't say "this is how we do it, y'all've gotta do it in line with that". You can't have your own way with pages. You ain't god's gift to wikipedia rodeo articles. Nope. So I'm gonna lone wolf it again. Please don't message me. Kyerjay (talk) 15:47, 19 January 2019 (UTC)

January 2019

Kyerjay, we appreciate your enthusiasm, but your comment here [2] was out of line. Collaboration is, in fact, important to Wikipedia. Read WP:BRD. Dawnleelynn is trying to help you out here, but when you tag dozens of articles at once, you DO have an obligation to fix what might have been messed up. My own position is that I'm OK if you tag a lot of articles, (Wild West Shows are kind of a gray area, some had roping and roughstock, others didn't), but put most of them as "low importance" -- look at how other wikiprojects do things. Please slow down a little bit and hear us out. Discuss if you need to. We are perfectly reasonable people. Your boldness is a good way to get a project started (I've been thinking about starting a rodeo WikiProject for years but never got around to it, so thank you), but you DO in fact need to collaborate. Montanabw(talk) 17:30, 19 January 2019 (UTC) Montanabw(talk) 17:30, 19 January 2019 (UTC)

@Montanabw: Dude, my comment was explaining how the pair of you keep talking to me as if you own the articles, you gotta be reading it wrong if you think I'm saying anything else, especially since I've never contributed to the page in question. I now just want to never hear from either of you, I didn't make the bull riding wikiproject to attract a group of administrators. Collaboration can be good, but it can also be done by folk independently making edits that build to a better article and never talking. All y'all comments, to me, sound like you're treating me like your annoying kid. Nobody's in charge, and I ain't dumb. So goodbye. Kyerjay (talk) 18:11, 19 January 2019 (UTC)
also, that damn comment was not out of line. It was a perfectly reasonable response to dawn saying "I never even asked you to consider us" as if she was going above and beyond and taking your guys' separate thing into consideration was expected. It's not. Just about anyone can edit rodeo articles without any knowledge of you guys, remember. You probably shouldn't be harassing them (me) with notes and instructions on your style and categories. Sure, if they do it different that might piss y'all off. Too bad. Unless it's actually wrong, you can't change it, because you have no ownership, so I don't have to consider you. It's you guys claiming ownership, and now calling me out of line for reminding you that you don't - whilst claiming that I apparently think I do? Don't sound reasonable to me. Your editing behavior has completely put me off working on this project or with either of you, in a day. After the first surprise message I gave y'all the benefit of the doubt as experienced folk who might help. But nope. Y'all controlling and got egos. Collaboration is good, but I wouldn't hire either of you for a team project. (Hope this explains why I don't wanna talk to y'all, I'm not just being mad) Kyerjay (talk) 18:20, 19 January 2019 (UTC)
  • You're off to a rough spot, and my friend, it is always rough the first time someone gets their work criticized. But you need to learn to listen. Just as you can change any article, so can we — and anyone else. Any time someone comes in and starts altering dozens of articles, it gets scrutinized. We started off trying to help and you were initially responsive. But your work had some issues and we basically were trying to get you to slow down and discuss how things work around here. You need to understand that Wikipedia is a collaborative venture. Good luck in the future. Montanabw(talk) 22:36, 19 January 2019 (UTC)

2019 US Banknote Contest

US Banknote Contest
November-December 2019

There are an estimated 30,000 different varieties of United States banknotes, yet only a fraction of these are represented on Wikimedia Commons in the form of 2D scans. Additionally, Colonial America, the Confederate States, the Republic of Texas, multiple states and territories, communities, and private companies have issued banknotes that are in the public domain today but are absent from Commons.

In the months of November and December, WikiProject Numismatics will be running a cross-wiki upload-a-thon, the 2019 US Banknote Contest. The goal of the contest is to increase the number of US banknote images available to content creators on all Wikimedia projects. Participants will claim points for uploading and importing 2D scans of US banknotes, and at the end of the contest all will receive awards. Whether you want to claim the Gold Wiki or you just want to have fun, all are invited to participate.

If you do not want to receive invitations to future US Banknote Contests, follow the instructions here
