Kevin Feng[edit]

Some real sources that are independent of the subject (i.e. not his own webpage, not the webpages of shows and events he's been directly involved in, not people's MySpace pages, etc.) would go a long way... Bearcat (talk) 15:30, 5 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

For the record, the reason VH1's webpage isn't a reliable source is that it's the webpage of a show that he starred in — which means that it's not independent coverage of him, but promotional content posted by a company with which he had a direct financial relationship. Similarly, PRWeb isn't an independent source, either, as it's just a press release distribution service — I could post something to PRWeb if I wanted to, but that wouldn't in and of itself make me notable enough to be an encyclopedia topic. People's MySpace pages and his own blog also don't count as reliable sources, because they're self-published pages that can include inaccurate and/or promotional content that hasn't been vetted by an editorial process the way newspaper coverage is. The Toledo Blade article does count, but the problem there is that our policy also requires substantial coverage, which means the Toledo Blade article can't be the only valid source in the article.
Our reliable sources policy is very largely about distinguishing between good sources (coverage in independent media) and bad ones (the topic's own website, their own press releases, etc.), precisely because pretty much every single thing and nearly every single person in at least the developed world would qualify for an article if we didn't maintain a distinction between real coverage and the person's own Twitter account.

It's okay to use the VH1 link as a confirming reference for additional information once enough other sources have been added to establish basic notability; it just can't be used as the core "he's notable because of this link" reference. His own blog might be more useful as an external link instead of a reference, though.

To cite more than one piece of information to the same reference, what you do is:

  1. The first time you're citing that reference, give it a "name" by opening the ref tag with <ref name=NAME> instead of just "ref". (but you still close the tag with just </ref>.) Generally you should use a name that reflects the reference in some way (the name of the publication, the name of the author, a word from the title, etc.) The only restriction is that you can't give two distinct references the same name — so if you had two different references to different articles in the same publication, you could name them "nytjan15" and "nytsep22" (or "nytsmith" and "nytjones", if the journalists were Jane Smith and Jerry Jones), or some other distinguishing feature that keeps the two references from getting confused.
  2. The second, third, fourth, etc., times you're citing a particular reference, instead of providing the complete reference again you just use <ref name=NAME /> instead. This tag closes itself with the /, so you don't need to add a </ref> afterward.

I'm not sure if the article has a chance since Kevin Feng isn't automatically notable, but I'll be happy to help out with some copyediting and cleaning up.
