bot stuff

Hhhhmmm, I suppose you have a point, after all, I can't find a single reference that says David Cameron does not blow goats. ;-)

On a different note, I have added a property called "Busy" and event called "BusyChanged" to the webcontrol which indicate whether AWB is actively in the process of doing something, it goes false if the list becomes empty or it is stopped.

I also added 2 other properties, can't remember what I called them, but they indicate whether the associated talk page or article page exists for the article that is currently being edited. Martin 11:41, 11 September 2006 (UTC)

Ooh... thanks mate. I was just in the process of writing in the User guide that those features aren't implemented yet, I click preview and get your message! Spooky huh? Thanks again, I'll have a play with that later. --kingboyk 11:45, 11 September 2006 (UTC)

Ligulembot

Hi, I would like to read your opinion about Wikipedia:Bots/Requests for approval/Ligulembot. Thanks, --Ligulem 11:43, 11 September 2006 (UTC)

Will do, but a little later today (currently busy as per message to Martin above). Give me a nudge if it's urgent and I haven't responded in a few hours :) --kingboyk 11:46, 11 September 2006 (UTC)

I discovered this phrase

"needing priority parameter replacement" at Luis Jiménez (sculptor) and was wondering about it. I wandered through several FAQs, but still am not sure what i can/should do about it ? Carptrash 15:19, 11 September 2006 (UTC)notes - Sept 9, 2006

Hi, thanks for the message. Don't worry about it, the bot fixed it. WikiProject Biography have renamed the importance= parameter to priority=, because some people felt that judging "importance" on a living person biography page could lead to problems. Talk:Luis Jiménez (sculptor) had an active importance= parameter which my bot changed.[1] --kingboyk 15:23, 11 September 2006 (UTC)

Wikipedia:Semi-bots

I have reverted your revert on Wikipedia:Semi-bots. That proposal didn't gain consensus, as can be seen on the talk. I thus agree with admin Radiant, who did put the inactive tag there. --Ligulem 17:23, 11 September 2006 (UTC)

All I see is people saying they'd object to marking it inactive, and then silence. I also fail to see what relevance Radiant's status as an admin has :) Bold (Radiant), revert (me), discuss (my talk page is open and so is the talk page of the approvals group). (FYI, that page is linked to from WP:AWB - I think if the policy is being abandoned we should remove the link). --kingboyk 17:40, 11 September 2006 (UTC)
It's true about Radiant's status. But he is an old timer which was away for half a year now. I thought you might have heard of him. As I said, the proposal itself didn't gain consensus as can be seen on the talk. I admit I am one of the opposers. A main cause of the troubles around this was the pushy behaviour of Francis when he tried to install this guideline. He repeatedely reverted most edits from others labeling them as not competent due to the fact that nearly all of them were AWB users. It looked like being an AWB user is disqualified to make any contribution to that proposal. I agree with Radiant that we shouldn't have a pile of perennial proposals. As such I was pleased that he did put the historical on it, which describes its status. If you really want to reactivate that proposal, then do it on the talk page please. Thanks. --Ligulem 18:04, 11 September 2006 (UTC)
Yes, I've heard of him. I don't have any wish to reactivate it at this point, but where does that leave AWB users? De facto legal I suppose. Anyway, cheers for now. --kingboyk 18:07, 11 September 2006 (UTC)

plugin

Howdy! Don't know if you saw my message back to you on my talk page? I couldn't find the link to download your new nifty plugin... --plange 18:51, 11 September 2006 (UTC)

Well, I'm just testing some changes made regarding the position on the page that the template gets placed in and my connection was slow :( Don't worry, it'll be posted tonight - if not with these changes, the previous working version :) --kingboyk 19:12, 11 September 2006 (UTC)

Bot tagging

Is there any way you can get your bot to replace the WPBiography template to where it originally deleted it from on talk pages? It's being replaced above the Talkheader template which should be at the top of the page. Thanks, VegaDark 03:39, 11 September 2006 (UTC)

Hi. I could do, yes, but I figured that WPBio should be at the top because if the person is alive the BLP warning should be at the top. I'll see if I can change it to recognise talkheader or put the WikiProject template back where it found it. Cheers. --kingboyk 08:32, 11 September 2006 (UTC)
One advantage of doing this in code rather than just using regular expressions is of course that I can get fine control over such things as layout. I'm going to implement the following scheme:
  • If the template already exists, put it back in the same place
  • ...unless it's {{WPBiography}} with a living=yes parameter, in which case put it at the top
  • Put new templates at the top
  • Finally, if (and only if) I've moved a template to the top or placed a new template at the top, search for {{Talkheader}} and if present move that to the top.
--kingboyk 10:25, 11 September 2006 (UTC)
Done. Testing now. --kingboyk 20:11, 11 September 2006 (UTC)
Thanks, Looks like it's working. VegaDark 22:17, 11 September 2006 (UTC)
I hope so, as I had to make some changes in some delicate parts of the code, and add a new regular expression. Does seem to be fine though :) (except for the edit summary, where the plugin has shuffled things around but the net result is that talkheader hasn't moved, it says it moved it - which it did, only it moved it back to where it came from. That's fixed in the next build, I'm not recompiling and reloading settings just for that :)). --kingboyk 22:25, 11 September 2006 (UTC)

What's this tag about on Russell J. York ? There's only so much material that can be found. If you have a problem with the article tell me what it is. I remodeled it once and still it's a stub. This is all you're going to get. The subject is a vet. That's it.Marky48 19:23, 12 September 2006 (UTC)

Hi. Please read the FAQ. I've never read your article and quite probably there's nothing wrong with it. All living people articles get that warning. If you can help reword the warning to make that part of it clearer please join the discussion at Template talk:Blp. --kingboyk 19:25, 12 September 2006 (UTC)

Since you seem well aware of the GA process and what a GA article actually looks like due to your work on "The KLF", I was wondering if you could take a look at this article? It was written by someone else other than me, though I helped with the references slightly. Would this pass for GA? I'm considering nominating it, though I'm unsure if its up to standard. Biography question

Hello. Your bot tagged the Nuh Ha Mim Keller article a while ago with the biographies of living person tag. Someone has posted some content on the talk page. It's unsourced but this person claims to have had first hand experience of the things he says. A note is added to the main article that says this. Can you take a look and let us know if it's within wikipedia policy to have such content? Thanks much. --Nkv 07:47, 13 September 2006 (UTC)

Delay

There will be a delay in answering what I perceive to be less than urgent messages, as I'm concentrating on programming at the moment. Please accept my apologies and be assured I will answer all messages in due course. --kingboyk 10:52, 13 September 2006 (UTC)

What do you mean?

On this edit [2] you said that if the comment was left alone, your bot should skip the page. Is there a problem with keeping it on there? Lonelygirl15 is a living person, just like Emmalina. Hbdragon88 20:26, 13 September 2006 (UTC)

Somebody removed the template, and I agree with them. According to the article, lonelygirl15 is a fictional character played by an actress. Fictional characters are not within the scope of WikiProject Biography. --kingboyk 20:29, 13 September 2006 (UTC)
Thanks for the clarification. Hbdragon88 20:47, 13 September 2006 (UTC)
You're welcome, thanks for the message. --kingboyk 20:57, 13 September 2006 (UTC)

Bot stuff

A few weeks back we had talks on your bot, which directed itself to talks on AWB and its' usage. I've held off as life got busy elsewhere, but I'm eagerly awaiting your further information on your programming work re: your AWB plugin. How's progress going with your side project? -- Longhair 09:49, 14 September 2006 (UTC)

Hi. It's working for WPBiography, and I'm currently working on functionality to allow it's use for article assessments. I'd recommend waiting until later today (hopefully!) for the next release, and then download it. If you like what I've done for WPBio I can make adding support for the Aussie template a priority. See: User:Kingbotk/Plugin --kingboyk 09:52, 14 September 2006 (UTC) PS I've calmed down a bit now ;)
Good to hear. Wikitempers rise sometimes mate, as life pressures rise. Australia hasn't exactly been the easiest place to live in of late I trust you realise, with icons dropping off like flies. Thanks for your thoughts there... Your good work has not gone un-noticed. Good to hear progress on your plugin is being made. I just wanted to touch base rather than force the pressuring hand upon you. Maybe we should cath up in irc sometime as talk pages are so old news, it's hard to communicate effectively when matters need to-and-fro communication. -- Longhair 10:00, 14 September 2006 (UTC)
We could do, yes. It's no extra pressure on me, I'm already working flat out on this so it's just a case of adjusting priorities :) The most important thing to me is that the fruits of my labour get used, so it would be a pleasure to support your project if you want it. Whatever the national mood I'd rather be in Aus than here... I've spent about a year and a half in your country and feel like an honorary Aussie. I'd move there if I could but alas the days of 10 pound Poms seem to be over. Anyway... time for a shower and then I'll get back to work. --kingboyk 10:24, 14 September 2006 (UTC)
Longhair cracks a complimentary tinnie, and crowns thy a complimentary Aussie. It's far from citizenship mate, but wikistyle, it works I think (imagination and all - make it happen :) I'll let you get back to good work, knowing progress is afoot. Cheers from afar mate. -- Longhair 10:43, 14 September 2006 (UTC)

Wikiproject

Feel free to quote me on the KLF Wikiproject, and add the fact I'm a rock/metal music interviewer for www.rockdetector.com which may lend weight to my comments. Thanks for leaving a message on my talk page - I'm preparing for a few interviews at the moment so I won't be able to actually edit the article I wanted help with (when I do I'll message you back). Also, thanks for pointing out some points on the Beatles songs FARs (I think the guy who initially nominated them is getting real annoyed with me. I'm slowly putting them all up for FAR so I hope he has a cool head!). LuciferMorgan 18:23, 15 September 2006 (UTC)

Please vote

Hello, there. Please take the time to vote for the various candidates over at Core_biographies#Voting_booth. If you can, try to read a bit about the candidates you don't know about so you can get a better idea of how to vote. Thanks! ♠ SG →Talk 10:45, 16 September 2006 (UTC)

Yeah, I guess it packs a punch - I modelled it on the Military history project, feeling we needed the extra parameters as the Australia category space is so vast and expansive. It's a complex template, but I dare say we'd be able to manage just by tagging articles within the Australia category structure with the vanilla template for now. I'm happy to allow editors adjust with relevant parameters as they're needed, and just tag them all under the stock standard template for time being. -- Longhair 10:58, 16 September 2006 (UTC)

I'll hold my horses ;) I'm seeing your progress on my watchlist, and sitting back in awe. All in good time mate - I'm merely asking, not pushing. I trust your judgement here. -- Longhair 11:04, 16 September 2006 (UTC)
I assume the auto= refers to automatic tagging of stub articles upon the detection of a stub tag? I think that may be a little controversial to go introducing on a whim, but if you've introduced it elsewhere recently and it's passed a muster, then we can talk more on its' Australian release :) -- Longhair 11:09, 16 September 2006 (UTC)
Yes. It seems to have gone by without too much controversy (but a little, so it's certainly not controversy free). You don't have to use it but it might help :) Up to you.
I need the needs-infobox parameter or a template to call, because my plugin has an option for "article needs infobox" when the user gets the popup "assess this article" form. --kingboyk 11:12, 16 September 2006 (UTC)
Can you point me to any recent discussion on its' usage? Others are going to ask, I'm sure ;) TIA. -- Longhair 11:15, 16 September 2006 (UTC)
There isn't much because I'm of the "be bold and see if anybody complains" school ;) I got one complaint on my bot request Wikipedia:Bots/Requests for approval/Kingbotk and... well, I think that's about it. I'm not aware of WPBio or WPSongs getting any complaints, both of whom have used it. (Category:Automatically assessed song articles, Category:Automatically assessed biography articles). On the other hand, it got "bigged up" here: Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Council/Archive_1#Public_Relations. I think it's gained a quiet acceptance as a necessary evil for a large Project. --kingboyk 11:22, 16 September 2006 (UTC)
I'm of your variety - be bold and defend as required. Thanks for the links. I'll check them out as need be - otherwise, proceed ;) -- Longhair 11:41, 16 September 2006 (UTC)
England send a bulkload of their crims here, then you wonder why Australia has a crime project? (pondering :) -- Longhair 14:01, 16 September 2006 (UTC)
I'll give your plugin a look now. Not feeling 100% today, think I might be coming down with something, but I'll give it some time before I croak :) The Lake Macquarie WikiProject was actually started by a MediaWiki developer, so I ignored it and considered it his just reward for past efforts. It doesn't seem to be very active though. -- Longhair 03:46, 17 September 2006 (UTC)
Looks good, and very complete. I'm about to give it a test but won't be doing much work until the bot account is approved for it's intended usage. -- Longhair 06:32, 17 September 2006 (UTC)
If you're going to use it in bot mode I strongly advise testing every parameter first, one at a time. Programming the class for your template was largely a mechanical exercise, and by the end I had very dead arms and a switched-off brain. It's not unimaginable that I forgot to implement a parameter or got the name wrong. Beyond that you should be very much good to go. User:plange has done a manual run of some 500 edits and said it worked perfectly; I've done a stack of manual edits and my bot has done thousands too. Nobody's screemed at me so it seems to be AOK. --kingboyk 14:56, 17 September 2006 (UTC)

Infoboxes?

We don't need no stinkin' infoboxes! ;-)

(Incidentally, I think that the stacked-banner design would likely cause many more complaints than merely adding a line to the existing one; noticing an extra colored bar is much easier than counting lines of text.) Kirill Lokshin 15:31, 16 September 2006 (UTC)

Oh but you do :) I'm gonna support MilHist in the Wikipedia Assessments feature of my plugin, and I need to be able to add either a single "infobox needed" template or a WikiProject template parameter. Since your project has multiple infobox types, the parameter is easier.
No probs on the placement. We had a request at WPBio to make the infobox needed bit big and noticeable - your mileage may vary :) --kingboyk 16:03, 16 September 2006 (UTC)
Infobox colors have randomly changed due to formatting. You may want to verify that Beatle albums are all still uniform in color. Some of the Badfinger album infoboxes remained orange, while others changed to lightsteelblue. If the second line in the infobox designates it as an "Album" it will be lightsteelblue. Otherwise the color will match whatever command line is in the box. -ZincOrbie 23:29, 17 September 2006 (UTC)

Re: GA

Perhaps you'd like to reread it instead?

... there will always be a group of people (whose articles tend to get mauled by any formal process, I suspect) that will go off and create "Decent articles" or whatnot just to have a nice pat-on-the-back setup

(emphasis mine) This doesn't (I would hope) refer to the overwhelming majority of GA participants; I'm speaking specifically of those people whose motivation for spurring on GA was that their articles had failed on FAC—hence depriving them of what they felt was their rightful place of honor—and who would thus try to game any attempt at making the GA process more rigorous by introducing yet another level in the article scale just so they can give out titles. See, for example, all the various games played with {{good article}} (particularly in its last incarnation, which prompted comments like "FA is waste of time for the majority of articles on wikipedia"). Kirill Lokshin 21:38, 16 September 2006 (UTC)

Boxes

Will you please stop adding mases of huge, repetitious, useless and annoying boxes to Talk pages? I am going to delete them as often as I see them. Adam 11:09, 17 September 2006 (UTC)

Will I stop? No, unless there's any change, as I have official bot approval to do this and the WikiProjects want it. Are you entitled to disagree? Of course, that's Wikipedia.
Most people don't consider the templates useless, although you're not alone in thinking them too large or talk page clutter. I suggest if you have a problem with the size of templates you take it to the talk page of the templates themselves or fix them. Cheers. --kingboyk 11:15, 17 September 2006 (UTC)

Can't you see that two of them are the same?? Adam 11:22, 17 September 2006 (UTC)

That's because they both call the same template due to the auto=yes parameter. I think we do need to have a rethink about that, leave it with me. It doesn't matter at the moment because they're transcluded not substituted so any changes will propogate onto the talk pages (i.e. if we can come up with a solution it will appear on those talk pages which are already tagged too). --kingboyk 11:26, 17 September 2006 (UTC)

And who precisely has been given the right to "assess" these articles? Is this a kindergarten? This tone of voice is patronising and insulting to people who contribute their expertise, unpaid, to this project. Adam 15:03, 17 September 2006 (UTC)

Huh? Anybody can and is welcome to assess, including you. --kingboyk 15:05, 17 September 2006 (UTC)

The Halo RfA

Re: [3]. How do you define a "social user"? And I can't think what's so bad about being that. Some admins *are* "social users" and should be (see WP:ANI). Not that I would want to change you opinion. I'm just thinking about your statement. --Ligulem 15:49, 17 September 2006 (UTC)

Your bot is tagging stub categories.

Hi Kingboyk

I just noticed that your bot had tagged a few stub categories as "stub articles" (e.g. Category:Nigerian politician stubs. Please try not to tag these, an actual stub category can never be a stub article. Cheers. Valentinian (talk) / (contribs) 08:48, 18 September 2006 (UTC)

Ah, OK. That's a little bug. It tags them by design but it shouldn't be Stub class. Thanks for letting me know, I'll fix that. --kingboyk 09:43, 18 September 2006 (UTC)
Actually it's not a bug, it's just that the edit summary isn't quite right. It tagged it class=Cat, priority=NA, which is as designed and correct. The edit summary is a bit weird so I'll look into that. --kingboyk 09:49, 18 September 2006 (UTC)
Also, please be a bit more careful with your edit summaries. You're making out that my bot is so stupid it can't tell a category from an article! Every time it receives a page it checks the namespace and whether the attached article is a blue or red link. Clearly it knows the page in question is a category talk as it tagged it class=Cat! :) --kingboyk 09:52, 18 September 2006 (UTC)
  1. Category talk:South African politician stubs (edit | category | history | links | watch | logs)
    • Biography: WPBiography added
    • Biography: class=Stub
    • Biography: auto=yes
    • Biography: politician-work-group=yes
    • Biography: Replacement: Stub→Cat
    • Plugin Manager: Returning to AWB: Edit summary: (Plugin) Tag Category:Politician stubs. Added {{WPBiography}}, class=Stub, auto=yes, politician-work-group=yes, Stub→Cat.

It looks like it's doing the categorisation per the user settings, then changing it to class=Cat at the end of the process, with that bit getting chopped off the edit summary because the summary was too long. The end result is correct but I'll see if I can change it to get there in a more direct fashion :) --kingboyk 09:57, 18 September 2006 (UTC)

I did indeed go by the edit summary, and I'm glad we agree that a stub category can never be "stub class", but I still don't find it a good idea to tag stub categories with WP:Biography. Stub categories are maintained by WP:WSS (which has created and maintains the politician categories you tagged). If editors begin believing that WP:Biography maintains stub categories rather than WP:WSS, I have a very strong feeling it will result in dozens of oddly-named and /-scoped categories which will only mean that WP:WSS will have to clean up even more mess. I would like to avoid this scenario. Valentinian (talk) / (contribs) 10:09, 18 September 2006 (UTC)
Gosh, a quick reply :) I've found the offending code (which was setting the edit summary based on user params without checking the namespace) and fixed it.
I take your point about the stub cats. I'm not so pessimistic in this regard but I'll hold off on tagging the category talks until there's some discussion about it. The only reason I'm doing it is to make it easier for editors - particularly those using AWB - to locate categories containing articles within our scope. It's certainly not claiming ownership. Nonetheless I don't want to cause any problems for your Project so I'll remove category pages from my current worklist. Cheers, and thanks for pointing that out to me - it wasn't a serious bug as I first feared - just cosmetic - but a bug nonetheless :). --kingboyk 10:15, 18 September 2006 (UTC)
Sounds great, and I don't doubt that you weren't trying to mess up our work. If you feel that categories should be tagged some way or the other, it will probably be better to take it up on Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Stub sorting. Perhaps it is possible to add one of our templates saying that WP:WSS does the actual creation / maintaining business, I don't know. I might have jumped the gun, but we have just wasted *so* much time on I-don't-know-how-many odd creations we'd have to deal with, so stub sorters are generally a lot happier when templates and categories don't flash up on the "recent changes" list. At the moment, we have achieved a pretty consistent system, which allows us to focus on bringing down the list of oversized categories rather than rescoping and renaming existing creations, so we would like to keep things running this way :) Cheers. Valentinian (talk) / (contribs) 10:35, 18 September 2006 (UTC)
And you're doing a good job of it too, so I wouldn't want to harm that.
I've just removed Category:British nobility stubs from politician stubs, as I noticed that my bot had tagged a King as a politician (I hope it didn't hit too many from that category, yikes). Please review that change. Although some nobility are politicians, most aren't - for example, being born noble doesn't guarantee a seat in the House of Lords. --kingboyk 10:40, 18 September 2006 (UTC)
Thanks, that was very thoughful of you. I'd just noticed that somebody had done this to the Scottish material but I'll recheck the rest of the politicians / royals / nobles just to make sure it isn't something general. Valentinian (talk) / (contribs) 10:46, 18 September 2006 (UTC)

Assessment log blanking

It is ok to have one to go to from the assessment page but the assessment page takes around to 1 minute to load everytime I load it. Everytime a new day is added by Mathbot, the other days should be removed because it is really taking longer and longer to load the page. Lincher 13:17, 18 September 2006 (UTC)

Your bot

Your bot recently tagged Anıtkabir, which is a mausoleum, as a biography. This was unintentional, right? Hemmingsen 04:12, 19 September 2006 (UTC)

Hi. Yes, that's a false positive. I see that one of it's categories is in Category:Turkish politicians. Unfortunately there's nothing that can be done to prevent these false positives other than a) checking every one of 40,000 articles manually, which kind of defeats automation :), or b) folks taking more care with categorisation. I filtered my list manually as best I could but alas that category must have slipped through the net. Sorry about that. Please remove the tag if you haven't already, and remove any other false positives you find. --kingboyk 10:29, 19 September 2006 (UTC)
No problem. The offending tag has been removed, and I haven't spotted any other false positives. All in all, it looks like some really nice work, you're doing. Hemmingsen 11:06, 19 September 2006 (UTC)

awb plugin request

Probably you don't want to be asked about plugins, but I'll try anyway. Here's the situation. On WP:CFD we deal with lots of moves daily. Currently some of we have pywikipedia wrappers to do the task. For instance at Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Working we have listings with some fixed structure. For instance today I would copy and paste the webpage into notepad to get

# Category:Fictional aerokineticists to Category:Fictional wind manipulators
# Category:Fictional atmokineticists to Category:Fictional weather manipulators
# Category:Fictional chronokineticists to Category:Fictional time manipulators
# Category:Fictional cryokineticists to Category:Fictional ice manipulators
# Category:Fictional biokineticists to Category:Fictional characters with healing powers

and then a python script uses a regex to extract the category and process them in batch with pywikipedia.

Caveat. Pywikipedia category script isn't very good. It doesn't handle well catgories included as <pre> [[category:category name|some parameter]] </pre> and it dies on categories added to redirect pages. Thus, things can't be really handled automaticlaly anyway. But AWB seem to be able, so I'm humbly asking for you helping CFD, and consider writing a plugin that does basically the same. Takes that structured listing, extract the category names and then.. either move or remove the category (could be 2 plugins) with AWB. -- Drini 18:49, 19 September 2006 (UTC)

I'm always happy to help of course but I just can't commit the time at the moment. I still have work to do on my Kingbotk plugin, and my availability may be curtailed soon.
I'll post this request - with my own comments - on the AWB page. If nothing happens in a couple of weeks please come back to me. --kingboyk 10:16, 20 September 2006 (UTC)

confusion about the edit

I am just starting to use AWB and I don't really know what it was trying to do when it did this edit [4], but I looked at it and didn't think it did any harm. I thought it must be a Wikipedia:manual of style issue. Feel free to revert if you'd like.

No it's OK, it doesn't seem to break anything :) I just wondered. You probably forgot to change your edit summary that's all. --kingboyk 21:50, 19 September 2006 (UTC)

Just a quick query: I've just come across several articles about living people which weren't filed in Category:Living people. I tagged their talk pages with Template:WPBiography, and noticed that that adds the talk page to Category:Biography articles of living people. Presumably there's a bot that confirms that the articles relating to the talk pages in that category are filed under the living people category, and once you've finished adding WPBiography|living=yes to the living people category there will be one doing the opposite? And/or will Category:Biography articles of living people be removed after your run? Thanks. Mike Peel 22:29, 19 September 2006 (UTC)

Actually Mike there's no cross-checking between those categories at the moment (and given that each holds over 100,000 articles it would be difficult to do). I've finished tagging Category:Living people now, but all my bot was doing was adding WPBio|living=yes to talk pages of articles in that category. Any talk page with living=yes gets added automatically to Category:Biography articles of living people. There's no intention at the present time to remove that category, no.
Basically, then, if you ever tag a talk page with living=yes and the article isn't in Category:Living people you have to add it to that category manually. --kingboyk 10:12, 20 September 2006 (UTC)

Very controversial claim

[5]: did you really mean to do this? Claiming that Muhammad al-Durrah is alive is a pretty small minority position on a very controversial matter. - Jmabel | Talk 00:00, 20 September 2006 (UTC)

Sigh. Take him out of Category:Living people then! It's that simple. And it's in my FAQ. --kingboyk 09:48, 20 September 2006 (UTC)

WPBiography

Hi Oleg, I hope you enjoy your wikibreak. When you get back, I wonder if you'd be willing to have Mathbot support "by priority" categories? We've had to rename our importance categories following a "complaint" that rating living people by "importance" might cause problems. We've already switched to the new naming so I hope you will be willing to do it :) --kingboyk 16:07, 31 August 2006 (UTC)

I implemented the alternative name for the categories, so "by priority" is now accepted along "by importance" in categories, see Wikipedia:Version 1.0 Editorial Team/Biography (arts and entertainment) articles by quality/1.
The word "importance" still shows up as the name of the second column in the table, as well as in {{assessment}}. If people strongly feel "importance" needs to be replaced everywhere by "priority", that can be done, subject to some discussion at Wikipedia talk:Version 1.0 Editorial Team/Index.
You can reply here if you have comments. Oleg Alexandrov (talk) 02:24, 20 September 2006 (UTC)
Thanks Oleg, that's great - it's certainly nice to have our ratings back :) I think we can leave it at that unless anyone complains. Presumably you implemented it as a universal change - not just for Bio - so any project is free to use priority= instead of importance= if they prefer? --kingboyk 10:14, 20 September 2006 (UTC)
Right, "priority" is accpted along with "importance" everywhere. Oleg Alexandrov (talk) 15:09, 20 September 2006 (UTC)

Good question. Here's what I think happened. WP Australia was created by myself, mostly to introduce WP1.0 assessments. Shortly after, the Cricket WP adapted the idea for themselves (I remember a message at the time from a member of the Cricket WikiProject asking for help in setting up, it's probably in my talk archives someplace). I've never really gotten in touch with them since, simply because I forgot all about them, but now you mention it, there's some overlap we need to define and work out the best means to proceed. Cricket is a major sport here as you may know. I'm not much of a cricket fan and don't delve into that area of Wikipedia much, but thanks for the reminder. If that explanation isn't clear, try me again, and I'll have another go at it :") -- Longhair 12:39, 20 September 2006 (UTC)

Well I'll trust you to sort it out but please let me know the outcome. If the 2 templates shouldn't coexist, or if you want a cricket param on WP Aus, I'll need to know about it so I can reprogram the bot. Did I mention that we currently have the Ashes?! ;) --kingboyk 12:43, 20 September 2006 (UTC)
I'll peruse my talk archives tomorrow and try to contact the editor involved. Failing that, I'll just post to the project itself to see what we can agree upon for template usage. Ashes? What are they? I've spent some time in India mate, and I know just how fanatical fans can become. I won't start you ;) -- Longhair 12:59, 20 September 2006 (UTC)
Don't worry about that, I strongly suspect ours is a very temporary possession! --kingboyk 13:01, 20 September 2006 (UTC)

Hey thanks for the tip. I hadn't tumbled onto that idea yet. Makes sense. --Bookandcoffee 16:30, 20 September 2006 (UTC)

Kingbotk errors

Dolmabahçe Palace is not a person but a building. It seems that your bot "Kingbotk" is not able to distinguish correctly. Please check! Because I had encountered shortly another error, but did not correct or report. CeeGee 16:44, 20 September 2006 (UTC)

Of course it can't check, it's software! This is because Category:Mustafa Kemal Atatürk is in a politicians category. I'll remove any from that category which are still in my list later. Cheers. --kingboyk 16:47, 20 September 2006 (UTC)
Category:Mustafa Kemal Atatürk should have been in "categories named after politicians" only, so that the ancillary articles don't get added to the biographies tree. I've fixed that and removed any remaining false positives from my list. Thanks for the headsup; if you ever see that I've got an entire category as a false positive again please do let me know. --kingboyk 22:27, 21 September 2006 (UTC)

bot: Category:WikiProjects participating in Wikipedia 1.0 assessments

Please update your bot so that it properly sorts articles that it categorizes. For example, when adding to Category:WikiProjects participating in Wikipedia 1.0 assessments the bot should have set the sortkey to all the text following "WikiProject". Dread Lord CyberSkull ✎☠ 03:03, 21 September 2006 (UTC)

I forgot to mention, also please don't have it just stick in categories on the last line either. It should preferably be inserted just after the last category on the page. Dread Lord CyberSkull ✎☠ 03:05, 21 September 2006 (UTC)
That wasn't a bot, it was AWB. I can't log into AWB as me when my bot is running because they share a cookie.
And, really, is this worth messaging me over? {{sofixit}}. --kingboyk 09:24, 21 September 2006 (UTC)
Sorry, just got out of bed grumpiness :) I've been thinking about this over my coffee, and I reckon AWB ought to be adding a sort key automatically when categorising non-mainspace pages. I'll post a feature request on the AWB page. Cheers. --kingboyk 09:47, 21 September 2006 (UTC)

Please can you delete this article. I have a request from him personally to delete it. Ernst Stavro Blofeld 09:59, 21 September 2006 (UTC)

No. It looks like you've been declined speedy deletion on this before. We don't delete articles because the subject doesn't want to be covered - it's Wikipedia policy, sorry. If there's anything in the article which is libellous or improperly sourced, just remove that text (but it looks innocuous to me). If there's a genuine questionmark over the guy's notability it can be considered at WP:AFD, but an article won't be deleted just because the subject doesn't want it. --kingboyk 10:08, 21 September 2006 (UTC)

Feature request thread moved to User_talk:Kingbotk/Plugin#Feature_request_from_WP:NOVELS. --kingboyk 16:10, 21 September 2006 (UTC)

Re: This list is totally pointless...

No, it's not. The list is great for people like me who watched Beavis and Butthead since episode one and seen almost every episode and go INSANE trying to remember songs. As you can see in the Talk:List_of_musicians_appearing_on_Beavis_and_Butt-head I was looking for such a song. While I agree that the adding of what the duo thought of the video is a good addition, the list isn't pointless. Far from it. Anyway, I plan on downloading all of these songs. --The Skunk 11:42, 21 September 2006 (UTC)

Erm... I made that comment on 3 March 2006. That's over half a year ago. Also, it's not an issue which requires my personal attention - just reply on the talk page! --kingboyk 11:44, 21 September 2006 (UTC)

Plugin for AWB

Hi, I've written a plugin in C#, modifying the example on the plugins page. It wraps a call to an external script (I'm a perl coder), writes the existing page content to STDIN, and reads the new page out of STDOUT (along with a flag that says whether a change was made). I'm having some problems with charsets - I can't work out why, but non-Latin chars seem to get mangled whatever I do. I've played around a bit with Encoding.UTF8 stuff but drawn a blank - I can't easily tell which end the problem is. If you could give me some advice or know who could, that'd really be great. Thanks! Pseudomonas 17:17, 21 September 2006 (UTC)

No idea is the short answer :) I don't do Perl. My plugin receives the text from a dotnet application (AWB) and process it in the same appdomain and the same programming environment, so I have no such worries. Wikipedia, of course, uses Unicode (presumably UTF8) so I'd think you'd need your script to output Unicode and you'd need to open the file for reading in the same mode. Beyond that it's Google I'm afraid - or you could ask Martin, the AWB author. --kingboyk 12:31, 22 September 2006 (UTC)
Well, thanks for answering, anyway. I've Googled extensively but to no avail. C# uses UTF16 internally, but I think it converts it to something else non-unicodish for passing to external streams. I'll try Martin and see if he can help, and obviously if it can be got to work I'll shove the working code up so that other perl coders can have an easier ride :) Pseudomonas 13:44, 22 September 2006 (UTC)
Sorry I can't be of more help, and I wish you luck - as Martin says, if you can get this to work I'm sure it would be very useful! --kingboyk 14:13, 22 September 2006 (UTC)

Donald Crowhurst

Do we really need Donald Crowhurst in categories for being a politician? (This from bio tags on talk page.) Yes, he did once serve on the town council of a town of about 36,000 people, but he's almost entirely known for his abortive round-the-world sailing voyage and presumed suicide at sea. -- Jmabel | Talk 05:49, 22 September 2006 (UTC)

He's in a politicians category so of course gets tagged. If you wish to use your editorial discretion to remove that workgroup entry be my guest :) --kingboyk 12:26, 22 September 2006 (UTC)

Royal Politicians?

Why is it that your bot has been adding British Royalty talk pages to the Politics workgroup? Surely that's a contradiction - very seldom have royals, let alone sovereigns, been 'politicians' in recent times... Any explanation? // DBD 10:47, 22 September 2006 (UTC)

As above - dodgy categorisation. I've removed any royals I can find but some have slipped in, in particular before I noticed it and in particular Scottish royals. If you find any - and if it looks like an entire category has been erroneously included - please let me know the category name so I can remove any remaining articles from my list manually. Also, if you find any royals categories which are in politicians category please remove them! --kingboyk 12:28, 22 September 2006 (UTC)

The Halo's RfA

Hi, please note that Cesare Pavese was a writer, not a politician. Perhaps this was also due to working through from higher-level categorization, since he is in Category:Members of the Italian Communist Party? Maybe this approach needs to be rethought/refined? Palmiro | Talk 21:08, 20 September 2006 (UTC)

The problem is simply that people are careless with categorisation :) He's in Italian Communists which is a direct offshoot of Italian politicians by party. That means he's a politician according to Wikipedia categorisation :) (an Italian politician by party - Communist Party). I'll fix that category now and also remove these from my list manually before resuming. Thanks for the heads up. --kingboyk 21:55, 20 September 2006 (UTC)
The correct way to categorise these is to have a Category:Members of the Italian Communist Party and a Category:Italian Communist Party politicians, with both belonging to a Category:Italian Communist Party but only the second one in Category:Italian politicians by party. Unfortunately my attempts to change the categorisation are being reverted! We'll have to make do with me removing all of these people from my list manually. Cheers. --kingboyk 22:31, 21 September 2006 (UTC)
Lucky you! Category:Members of the Daisy is a brilliant sounding category, too. Sounds like some sort of alternative British honours system for ecowarriors. Palmiro | Talk 21:16, 22 September 2006 (UTC)
Hmm... it does rather doesn't it :) --kingboyk 18:31, 25 September 2006 (UTC)

Hi Kingboyk. You were the nominator on the above category which I have listed for deletion review here on purely procedural grounds (debate should be relisted because of move mid-debate effectively hiding the debate). Plugin

Hi Kingboyk. As you seem to be great with AWB plugins, can I ask a favor of you? Can you perhaps create a small plugin for me that will take all the pages in the list (which will all be in the talk: namespace) and if the main article exists doesn't exist, then it will add {{db-botnomain}} to the top of the page; otherwise, it will do nothing. If you don't have time or don't feel like doing it I understand. Thanks :-) —Mets501 (talk) 20:33, 25 September 2006 (UTC) Corrected. --kingboyk 12:01, 26 September 2006 (UTC)

I'm trying to cut down on "meta" work (and wiki in general) but that sounds extremely simple :) Where's the catch? It can't be that easy! If there's no catch and that's really all it has to do, sure! --kingboyk 20:37, 25 September 2006 (UTC) (PS: What's the db-botnomain template gonna say?)
No catch :-). I just can't figure out how to find out if another page exists with a plugin... Thanks so much! —Mets501 (talk) 01:01, 26 September 2006 (UTC)
OK, done. Download the DLL and/or source code here, or grab the class source here. --kingboyk 12:01, 26 September 2006 (UTC)
Wow! Thanks again! I've given you credit for the plugin on my bot's page :-) —Mets501 (talk) 20:23, 26 September 2006 (UTC)
You're welcome. Where should I send the bill? :P You might want to tweak the edit summary code to wikilink to the article (which I meant to do and forgot) or set it to some other message you want. Also, I don't think I did the enabled on/off code properly so either fix that or don't have the plugin installed when you're doing other jobs. Other than that it ought to do exactly what it says on the tin :) --kingboyk 20:30, 26 September 2006 (UTC)
Actually, there's a slight problem. It's not catching any pages. This part of the code:
       If Enabled Then
' Process the page if it's a talk page, it exists, and the attached article *doesn't* exist:
If (NS = conTalkNamespace) And WebControl.TalkPageExists And Not WebControl.ArticlePageExists Then
               StatusText.Text = "Processing " & ArticleTitle
               Return "{{db-botnomain}}" & Microsoft.VisualBasic.vbCrLf & ArticleText
do you think it's missing a skip=False before the Return line? —Mets501 (talk) 01:26, 27 September 2006 (UTC)
That was it, skip=False did the trick :-). Working great now, will start tagging very soon... —Mets501 (talk) 01:49, 27 September 2006 (UTC)
Also, I think you're back from Wikibreak now :-) You may want to remove the sign from the top of your talk page. —Mets501 (talk) 02:06, 27 September 2006 (UTC)
Worked for me. Skip ought to default to False. I'll run that in the debugger just to find out what's happening... yeah, Skip comes in as False (the default for a boolean, which can never be null) and is returned as False if not otherwise set to True. That's bizarre but, well, whatever works for you! :) I'm trying to cut down on wiki work and concentrate on articles only, plus I might have to disappear for a while so I'll leave the notice for now. --kingboyk 10:43, 27 September 2006 (UTC)

{{Film}}

I was wondering if you could add some syntax into the template to automatically assess articles as stubs (if they do not yet have an assessment) on the assessement scale if they use a stub template... I've been trying to do it and can't seem to find a way, any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks, Cbrown1023 00:06, 26 September 2006 (UTC)

Are you populating your category in AWB with the articles in that stub category? --plange 22:29, 26 September 2006 (UTC)
What? I was wondering if he could use something like the {{stubclass}} template for our project. I can't seem to get it to work, when I tried it, the template would not remove itself from the pages and it was added to articles that already had a rating. Cbrown1023 23:53, 26 September 2006 (UTC)
The best way would be to add an auto=yes parameter, like in {{WPBiography}} and several other templates. Then load my plugin and load the "Film generic template.xml" file. Click auto-stub in template properties to tell the plugin that the template has an auto=yes parameter. Then to rate articles as stub class automatically, click auto-stub in the Configuration box. It will only add class=Stub and auto=yes to talk pages which don't already have a rating. --kingboyk 23:58, 26 September 2006 (UTC)
OK, I've done the template code for you. Will update the XML file in the next release of the plugin, but you don't need to wait - just follow the instructions above. --kingboyk 16:15, 28 September 2006 (UTC)

Thin Lizzy Talk Page

Hi there. I feel you might just have cut out a bit too much on the Thin Lizzy Talk, you see it cut's straight into a passage which I made. The only troll on that page is the user AlfredG who appears to poke fun at any kind of music he doesn't like. I am sure we can wipe him off and keep the rest of it on. You think so? Evlekis 19:20, 28 September 2006 (UTC)

There's no need to keep replies to him, nor discussion about whether Thin Lizzy were a one hit wonder (they weren't). But, if you want to selectively restore sensible comments, go right ahead - thanks for asking. --kingboyk 19:22, 28 September 2006 (UTC)

I don't know if you are aware, but I left a reply to your comments on the FA nom on the above article, which included questions I have related to how it could be improved, To save you finding it again (you probably aren't watching the page) my comments were as follows:

As above - I would love to do something to sort out the lack of inline citations, as there are plenty of cited sources, but, again - what is an inline citation? As for the photo, is it possible to find a fair use rational for a photo of the accident aircraft from when it was in service? It would definatly be possible to find such an image.

I would like answers to these questions, as I am determined to act on any suggestions for how the article could be improved. I look forward to your reply - on my/the article's talk page please, or on the nomination page. Thanks in advance for your time! - Blood red sandman 17:51, 29 September 2006 (UTC)

Hi Sandy. If that pagename is consistently causing you problems, let's set up a WP: shortcut. WP:BIOT, WP:BIOTODO, WP:BIOTD are all available, you fancy any of those? --kingboyk 21:10, 1 October 2006 (UTC)

Plange has been very patient with me :-) I think I know how to solve the problem now. I'm doing everything with a new and much easier method, since I now have all the "Lacking inline citations" list on a spreadsheet, and I had the wrong link in my spreadsheet. Also, now that I've edited that page a few times, I think I may get it right next time. My spreadsheet is making it easier: I'll see how it goes next time before I trouble Plange again. Thanks ! User:Drini and Drinibot

Sorry to bother you, but I noticed a category (Entertainers who died in their 40's) has been removed from John Lennon and another article that I watch. I went back to the discussion for the deletion nom to find there was a "No Consensus" tag. I thought that meant that the category shouldn't be deleted? Is this vandalism? The talk page for the User made little sense, although I put a polite request to stop there. Cheers.LessHeard vanU 19:32, 2 October 2006 (UTC) I'm also pestering Lar with this, if you are busy.

It's best not to bandy about the word "vandalism" when dealing with established users, something like "being overly bold" might be better :) As it happens, it looks like it was closed as delete: Wikipedia:Categories_for_deletion/Log/2006_September_24#Category:Entertainers_by_age_upon_death. --kingboyk 19:35, 2 October 2006 (UTC)
As long as it is understood that Attila was being "overly bold" when "remodelling Rome by means of fire" (this quip would have worked better if I could have remembered a notable member of the Vandal tribe), then I demur. I looked at the votes and saw that there were plenty of keeps, at least enough to not be a concensus for Delete, but it appears that Drini declared the result; and launched his bot. Whatever; it is an internal matter and I shan't get further involved.LessHeard vanU 19:48, 2 October 2006 (UTC)
No no, you're quite entitled to query a close, but what I was getting at was that his edits at least appear to be entirely legit :) If you wish to query the close as "delete" it's perfectly OK to do so - WP:DRV is your port of call. Hope that helps. --kingboyk 19:50, 2 October 2006 (UTC)

May I chime in? I think the bot edit summaries are pretty clear where to find the discussoin, and yes, I see that there are several keeps, yet it mut be remembered that CFD is not a vote (Wikipedia is not a democracy). So I gaufged the arguments, while the keepers reasons were along the lines of "I like it", "it's ridiculous", "iti nterests me", there wer a few goood arguments on the delete side "death age is not as relevant as birtyear" (osomec), "Categories are not a database" (pvel ), so consensus was for closing as delete, which I did. -- Drini 20:17, 2 October 2006 (UTC)

Yeah, I have now been pointed at all the right places and I concur it is legit - and this is the third page on which I am apologising (grin). Hi Kingboyk. I am trying to provide sources that verify the continuing vitality of the hippie movement in the UK after 1970, which other editors have also attested to, so I suspect it's true. Not sure when the two events you mentioned occurred--can you provide dates? Also can you provide sources for information regarding this topic--news stories from the era, books that discuss the matter, and so on?

Of particular concern: Do we know if the hippie movement in the UK continued uninterrupted? In the United States, hippiedom pretty much lost steam during the 1970's as a visible social movement.

Some might claim that the events to which you refer were "neo-hippie" happenings. Do you think this is true? Thanks. Founders4 16:33, 3 October 2006 (UTC)

Yes, your last statement is probably true. I was at the Glastonbury Festival in 1992 and whilst in some ways it was like Woodstock-revisited it was of course a different era. LSD had made a comeback, and so had tie dye clothing and long hair, but the soundtrack wasn't wholly psychedelic rock nor was the ethos the same as the 1960s incarnation. Dance music, in particular, was very important by then (and even stole its name from 60s hippie gatherings - the "rave").
I wouldn't say there was an uninterrupted mainstream hippie movement; punk rock made it deeply unfashionable for a while (ironically, the later new age travelling/rave music scene looked to punk for inspiration, too). Then in the 1980s, a travelling subcult emerged with regular, illegal free festivals. These fused with the emerging rave music scene, which had elements of hippiedom but was rather more "hardcore" and drug orientated. The Castlemorton Common Festival was pretty much the peak of this movement; the government stamped it out soon after.
Some pertinent links might include: Crusty, Rave music, new age travellers, Castlemorton Common Festival, Stonehenge Free Festival, Ozric Tentacles, Back to the Planet, Glastonbury Festival, Spiral Tribe...
I'm glad you want citations :), but I'm not really able to provide them. The crusty/travelling/neo-hippy movement got some coverage in NME and so on (including, I recall, a front cover), and a great deal of mainstream press coverage when the "Convoy" became a political issue - if you could get access to a premium newspaper search archive which covers the late 80s and early 90s I'm sure you'd find plenty. You'd be searching primarily for "new age" rather than "hippy" though. There was a book, I think it was called A Time To Travel, and no doubt plenty of academic papers and so on. Certainly these people were often called "hippies" and the movement drew on hippiedom for some of its inspiration, but I hope you can find some good sources for this and then you can make up your own mind :)
Of course the revival was somewhat shortlived; Nirvana and their ilk put rock back on the agenda, and the draconian Criminal Justice and Public Order Act 1994 forced most of the "new age" travellers off the road. Nonetheless, I think if you dig deep enough you'd find many useful sources. I hope one day to get to some of these sources myself and beef up the new age travellers article - there's an interesting story to be told. --kingboyk 17:28, 3 October 2006 (UTC)

Rocky Review

First of all thanks for the review, I'd just like to clear up that in the Production section each paragraph, bar the last is cited to Stallone and the video commentary, I belive this was done by another user in keeping with the new inline citations rules. I will work on finding some other sources for things like the Ken Norton thing and hopefully 4's a charm

Comments on "stub" rating?

Hi there. I created an article re: Carmen (Rock Band) --you've rating it a "stub" (I guess your 'bot did) and inserted a lack of references note. I note that "stub" rating is supposed to be accompanied by comments, but I can't find any. If changes need making, let me know, but (1) this was a minor band, mostly of interest due to members who went on to play with other famous acts--a lengthy article would be too much fluff (2) the only real reference to be made is the fans' website, already provided. Truddick 18:15, 4 October 2006 (UTC)

The article you mention is a red link, but I'll try to find it. My bot doesn't insert "references needed" tags. If you disagree with a Stub rating, (hopefully) clear and (certainly) prominent instructions are given about how to change it. --kingboyk 18:17, 4 October 2006 (UTC)
OK, it's Carmen (rock band). The sources tag was added 2 months ago by a (human) editor[6]. --kingboyk 18:19, 4 October 2006 (UTC)

AWB plugin for assessments

Hi, I was wondering how the AWB plugin was working for assessments. Have you got it tweaked to get rid of bugs and to get it working the way you like? If so (a) thank you once again for your wonderful work in this area and (b) could you write a couple of sentences about it for the Wikipedia:Version_1.0_Editorial_Team/Using_the_bot page - we should ensure that it's used by as many people as possible. Thanks, Walkerma 03:21, 4 October 2006 (UTC)

Hi. The mass-tagging features are of course well tested, but I personally haven't tested the assessments feature in anger. Of course I give every bit of code a try, and throw a few strange things at it (misformatted tags, hitting buttons in an ununusual sequence etc) but in no way can I say that I have tested it thoroughly. Basically, I don't have a fast connection, and I don't do assessments one after the other, so I've not really had a need for it.
User:Plange reported a bug. I fixed it, and that was the last I heard...
Hey, if you fancy trying it yourself go right ahead :)
I don't plan any new releases just yet, but I do have a few new features planned for release some time. In the meantime I'm happy to fix any bugs which show up or make small tweaks as needed. HTH. --kingboyk 19:31, 4 October 2006 (UTC)

Is this speedy-able?

Hi kingboy,

I am going through the Articles needing context category and stumbled upon this article Aozora_Bunko. There is nothing wrong with this aticle, but the author has created pages A-Z listings of the material that they host. Can this be speedily deleted under: "11. Blatant spam. Pages that exist only to promote a company, person, product, service or group." If not I will tag all the pages with "prod" but thought I'd ask.

Martin Hinks 09:53, 4 October 2006 (UTC)

The spam criterion is new. I only heard about it yesterday on User talk:JzG, and when I went to check the criteria that one had been removed. Whether it's back up now or not I don't know.
Anyway, I certainly would decline to speedy that. It doesn't look on the face of it to be a commercial, or a commercial site (but the site has adverts). I'd send it to AFD in the hope that some of our Japanese friends can shed some light on it. In the meantime just remove the A-Z listing. --kingboyk 19:36, 4 October 2006 (UTC)

Rocky

Thankyou for the review, I can now take my long overdue Wikibreak

†he Bread 23:01, 5 October 2006 (UTC)

You're welcome. Enjoy your wikibreak - but keep an eye out for more sources won't you. --kingboyk 10:29, 6 October 2006 (UTC)

Geddes Template

Why'd you delete my music box template for? :( RomeoVoid 02:15, 6 October 2006 (UTC)

If you let me know the exact page we're talking about I can check the log and tell you. Offhand I don't know, sorry. --kingboyk 10:28, 6 October 2006 (UTC)

Bots and such

I hereby bestow the Military history WikiProject Distinguished Service Award upon you for your tireless development of automated tools that have been of enormous utility to the project. Kirill Lokshin 05:25, 6 October 2006 (UTC)
Definitely well-deserved! You've made things so much easier to tag!! --plange 05:27, 6 October 2006 (UTC)
That's truly an honour, and totally unexpected (not sure it's entirely deserved either :)). Thanks ever so much, I really appreciate it. --kingboyk 12:54, 6 October 2006 (UTC)
Well done Steve. ++Lar: t/c 13:33, 6 October 2006 (UTC)

Remember when you proposed I start a WikiProject on New Wave music?

Um, yeah. I kinda took that seriously. BTW, that's a temporary project page until I see I have enough support from the proposal I made on the WikiProject proposal page. Which, hopefully, will happen. Crossing my fingers. (Krushsister 05:52, 6 October 2006 (UTC))

I'm sorry but I don't remember that at all! I have a quite appalling memory :( Anyway, no matter, that's good news indeed - I'll check it out. Good luck with the WikiProject. You might want to announce it at WP Albums, Songs and Musicians too :) --kingboyk 09:44, 6 October 2006 (UTC)

WikiProject The Beatles Newsletter, Issue 6, October 2006

WikiProject The Beatles Newsletter
Issue 006 – October 2006

Beatles News
  • The site of the former Casbah Club, operated by Mona Best (mother of Pete) in the basement of her house, and where the nascent Beatles played and rehearsed, has been accorded Grade II Listed status following a recommendation by British Heritage.
Project News
  • Some Project articles are having their Featured Article status reviewed, and the comments are not encouraging. The articles are A Day in the Life and A Hard Day's Night (song). (She Loves You has already had its FA status revoked.) Please participate in the discussion and help improve the articles!
Member News
  • As usual, the self-effacing individuals who contribute to the Project are far too modest to mention any Barnstars or other awards they may have received. Obviously they feel their editing/contributing is reward enough.
Issue of the Month

The lead article of the Project recently lost its FA status, and now some of the other articles are being reviewed. Citations and references within articles are again the major concern. Contributors who have literature (books, magazines, links, etc.) are especially needed to provide the necessary citations. It is not enough for editors to know the facts; they need to be backed up by other sources. All help, both within the articles and the discussion, would be appreciated.

From the Editors

If you've just joined, add your name to the Participants section of Wikipedia:WikiProject The Beatles. You'll get a mention in the next issue of the Newsletter and get it delivered as desired. Also, please include your own promotions and awards in future issues. Don't be shy!

Lastly, this is your newsletter and you can be involved in the creation of the next issue (Issue 007 – November 2006). Any and all contributions are welcome. Simply let yourself be known to any of the undersigned, or just start editing!

Come back, Kingboyk! The children miss you!

Cites

I don't really have much time to spend on Wikipedia due to a hectic schedule. I wish to add the odd inline citation to Beatles articles, but things I'm finding hard to obtain and need to establish are the;

  • Interview heading, eg "Sir Paul Rides Again"
  • Magazine Issue Number, eg. Rolling Stone № 985

Are there any online places which provide such detail in interviews that've been uploaded? I can find some interviews, but not the detailed info required for an inline citation (least in my eyes). LuciferMorgan 21:11, 5 October 2006 (UTC)

In general terms, I don't know, sorry. If you want help with anything specific, I'll try to help. In the meantime I'd advise posting at one or more of the music noticeboards. User:Derek Bullamore might be worth asking too (except that's red... hmm... what's his name?? :)). --kingboyk 10:31, 6 October 2006 (UTC)
