Art Ross (1886–1964) was a Canadian ice hockey defenceman and executive from 1905 until 1954. Regarded as one of the best defenders of his era by his peers, he was one of the first to skate with the puck up the ice rather than pass it to a forward. He won the Stanley Cup twice in a playing career that lasted thirteen seasons; in January 1907 with the Kenora Thistles and 1908 with the Montreal Wanderers. In 1911 he led one of the first organized player strikes over increased pay. When the Wanderers' home arena burned down in January 1918, the team ceased operations and Ross retired as a player. After several years as an on-ice official, he was named head coach of the Hamilton Tigers for one season. When the Boston Bruins were formed in 1924, Ross was hired as the first coach and general manager of the team. He would go on to coach the team on four separate occasions until 1945 and stayed as general manager until his retirement in 1954. WikiCup 2012 January newsletter

WikiCup 2012 is off to a flying start. At the time of writing, we have 112 contestants; comparable to last year, but slightly fewer than 2010. Signups will remain open for another week, after which time they will be closed for this year. Our currrent far-away leader is Grapple X (submissions), due mostly to his work on a slew of good articles about The X-Files; there remain many such articles waiting to be reviewed at good article candidates. Second place is currently held by Ruby2010 (submissions), whose points come mostly from good articles about television episodes, although good article reviews, did you knows and an article about a baroness round out the score. In third place is Jivesh boodhun (submissions), who has scored 200 points for his work on a single featured article, as well as points for work on others, mostly in the area of pop music. In all, nine users have 100 or more points. However, at the other end of the scale, there are still dozens of participants who are yet to score. Please remember to update your submission pages promptly!

The 64 highest scoring participants will advance to round 2 in a month's time. There, they will be split into eight random groups of eight. The score needed to reach the next round is not at all clear; last year, 8 points guaranteed a place. The year before, 20.

A few participants and their work warrant a mention for achieving "firsts" in this competition.

• 12george1 (submissions) was the first to score, with his good article review of Illinois v. McArthur.
• 12george1 (submissions) was also the first to score points for an article, thanks to his work on Hurricane Debby (1982)- now a good article. Tropical storms have featured heavily in the Cup, and good articles currently have a relatively fast turnaround time for reviews.
• Sp33dyphil (submissions) was the first to score points for a did you know, with Russian submarine K-114 Tula. Military history is another subject which has seen a lot of Cup activity.
• Sp33dyphil (submissions) is also the first person to successfully claim bonus points. Terminator 2: Judgment Day is now a good article, and was eligible for bonus points because the subject was covered on more than 20 other Wikipedias at the start of the competition. It is fantastic to see bonus points being claimed so early!
• Speciate (submissions) was the first to score points for an In the News entry, with Paedophryne amauensis. The lead image from the article was also used on the main page for a time, and it's certainly eye-catching!
• Jivesh boodhun (submissions) was the first to score points for a featured article, and is, at the moment, the only competitor to claim for one. The article, "Halo" (Beyoncé Knowles song), was also worth double points because of its wide coverage. While this is an article that Jivesh and others have worked on for some time, it is undeniable that he has put considerable work into it this year, pushing it over the edge.

We are yet to see any featured lists, featured topics or good topics, but this is unsurprising; firstly, the nomination processes with each of these can take some time, and, secondly, it can take a considerable amount of time to work content to this level. In a similar vein, we have seen only one featured article. The requirement that content must have been worked on this year to be eligible means that we did not expect to see these at the start of the competition. No points have been claimed for featured portals or pictures, but these are not content types which are often claimed; the former has never made a big impact on the WikiCup, while the latter has not done so since 2009's competition.

A quick rules clarification before the regular notices: If you are concerned that another user is claiming points inappropriately, please contact a judge to take a look at the article. Competitors policing one another can create a bad atmosphere, and may lead to inconsistencies and mistakes. Rest assured that we, the judges, are making an effort to check submissions, but it is possible that we will miss something. On a loosely related note: If you are concerned that your nomination, be it at good article candidates, a featured process or anywhere else, will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. However, please remember to continue to offer reviews at GAC, FAC and all the other pages that require them to prevent any backlogs which could otherwise be caused by the Cup. Bain, Ross and Bowie

I've updated the articles for Dan Bain, Art Ross and Russell Bowie and the Hockey Hall of Fame list. Their induction dates into the Hall of Fame were wrong. Researchers only found this recently and I got the info on a mailing list. I've added the appropriate newspaper cites from Google News Archives. The Hall of Fame web site update is coming, as the Hall of Fame was notified. You were one of the people who worked on these articles so I thought I should pass it along. Very surprising that the HOF has the induction dates wrong on their own web site. I guess we have to double-check even them. Don't know about the plaques at the Hall. Trevor Linden (born 1970) is a retired Canadian professional ice hockey player. He played centre and right wing with four different teams: the Vancouver Canucks (in two stints), New York Islanders, Montreal Canadiens, and Washington Capitals. In addition to appearing in two NHL All-Star Games, Linden was a member of the 1998 Canadian Olympic team and participated in the 1996 World Cup of Hockey. Throughout his career, Linden has been recognized as a respected leader on and off the ice. He was named captain of the Canucks at the age of 21, making him one of the youngest captains in league history. While captaining the Canucks, Linden led the team to within a game of winning the Stanley Cup in 1994. It was during this time that he began to be called Captain Canuck. In 1998 he was elected President of the National Hockey League Players' Association (NHLPA), a position he held for eight years. As President, he played an instrumental role in the 2004–05 NHL lockout, including negotiations with league owners. After 19 seasons in the NHL, Linden retired on June 11, 2008, twenty years to the day after he was drafted into the NHL. IIHF historical rules

Just wondering if you could help me out, you have contributed a significant amount to IIHF pages. There are inconsistencies in the standings of some tournaments in 1971 and 1972 (and maybe others). To be specific, the tie-breakers used for pools b and c do not agree with the practice used in pool a of using head-to-head results first. The encyclopedia I often rely on agrees with the current wikipedia version, but disagrees with Passionhockey.com. Was hoping that you were aware of an additional source that either has an official result, or an explanation of the changes in tie-breaking procedure. Additionally, the explanation for the awarding of the bronze medal at the 1964 olympics is nonsensical, but agrees with the source used. There was no "medal" round involved, so how could goal difference in the medal round have any bearing at all? If you can help, I would appreciate it18abruce (talk) 13:12, 11 May 2012 (UTC)

I notice you removed an external link I inserted (Howie Morenz). I've included similar links in the past (less than 5 or 6 a year), wondering why a link to a prominent hockey publication was removed, did we break any Wiki rules? Nail Yakupov

I noticed you changed the medal template that I had amended on his page. The link you took out was that he was a member of the Russia men's national under-18 ice hockey team and left it with only the Russia men's national junior ice hockey team. Since the Russian team at the World Junior A Challenge is their U18 team, does it not make more sense to leave both links? If consensus is that we simply link one that is fine, I was being technical as the user would click on Russia and be sent to the wrong team page for the WJAC medal. 2016 world junior division III

Thank you, generally just happy when my wife and kids give me time on the computer. The problem with Division III in the U20 and the Men's is that it is more common for the rules not to be followed when more than six nations apply to compete, so the rule stands as more of a warning I guess. Maybe you could help me out with something; I was at the women's U18 gold medal game last night and took a couple of pictures, how do I upload and is there some guidance somewhere on whether they are "good enough" to merit inclusion in an article?18abruce (talk) 04:27, 17 January 2016 (UTC)

If you want to see consistency you should check the other articles. Most have the "current style" which is better in my view. But that does not count. Other people adding them the current style and you are the only one that wants it the other way. Seems odd to me and position is relevant. Kante4 (talk) 20:06, 3 April 2016 (UTC)

Extended confirmed protection

Hello, Kaiser matias. This message is intended to notify administrators of important changes to the protection policy.

Extended confirmed protection (also known as "30/500 protection") is a new level of page protection that only allows edits from accounts at least 30 days old and with 500 edits. The automatically assigned "extended confirmed" user right was created for this purpose. The protection level was created following this community discussion with the primary intention of enforcing various arbitration remedies that prohibited editors under the "30 days/500 edits" threshold to edit certain topic areas.

In July and August 2016, a request for comment established consensus for community use of the new protection level. Administrators are authorized to apply extended confirmed protection to combat any form of disruption (e.g. vandalism, sock puppetry, edit warring, etc.) on any topic, subject to the following conditions:

• Extended confirmed protection may only be used in cases where semi-protection has proven ineffective. It should not be used as a first resort.
• A bot will post a notification at Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard of each use. MusikBot currently does this by updating a report, which is transcluded onto the noticeboard.

A new user right for New Page Patrollers

A new user group, New Page Reviewer, has been created in a move to greatly improve the standard of new page patrolling. The user right can be granted by any admin at PERM. It is highly recommended that admins look beyond the simple numerical threshold and satisfy themselves that the candidates have the required skills of communication and an advanced knowledge of notability and deletion. Admins are automatically included in this user right.

It is anticipated that this user right will significantly reduce the work load of admins who patrol the performance of the patrollers. However,due to the complexity of the rollout, some rights may have been accorded that may later need to be withdrawn, so some help will still be needed to some extent when discovering wrongly applied deletion tags or inappropriate pages that escape the attention of less experienced reviewers, and above all, hasty and bitey tagging for maintenance. User warnings are available here but very often a friendly custom message works best.

Canada's coach and captain

Hi! I was just looking at the article Canada men's national junior ice hockey team. In the infobox it states that the team's coach is Dave Lowry and that the captain is Brayden Point. However, our coach for the 2017 WJC is Dominique Ducharme and our captain is Dylan Strome. Some of the assistant coaches are outdated as well.
