I award JayHenry this Barnstar of Diligence for his thorough sourcing work and collaborative spirit while contributing to the Cillian Murphy article and its FAC. Thanks! --Melty girl 03:55, 21 October 2007 (UTC)
Well, the Cillian Murphy FAC closed with 8 supports and 3 opposes, and one of the latter has encouraged me to renominate, so I did. If you are so inclined, I would love to have your support again. Your work the first time around was truly invaluable. Thanks! Melty girl 01:16, 24 October 2007 (UTC)

Javan rhino

I've started reading it, and although I think it is quite good content-wise, I have more than a few beefs with the organization and ordering of the information, the grammar, and the references' formatting. I'll try to give it a thorough copyediting before making content-related comments (I usually do copyedit and content comments together, but here it would be, I'm afraid, entirely impractical). RfA thank-spam

Thank you!
Thank you for your help in my RfA. It hammered home a few things I need to keep in mind while admining and passed with a final tally of 40/0/4; two people forgot to vote in time, leaving me short of that exquisite number :-(, but I'll just have to fudge the next vote about me. Adminship feels slightly august but not particularily exalted, so I shall endeavour to consider it a toolkit and make sincere efforts to know what I'm doing before using it. If you did want to help move toward implementation of some ideas you might lend support here. The problem we need to solve at the moment is how to archive the PR page manually. (Know any bot programmers?) After that, we can move to institute the categories.

You suggested at the FAC that we might try to get Dr. Achebe to read the article – and I agree; in fact, I've written up a letter with a printout of the article enclosed. However, RogerDavies has suggested that it's a bad idea. What do you think? – Scartol · Talk 22:38, 4 November 2007 (UTC)

Rigadoun

Hi,

I was very impressed with the grace the editor showed in withdrawing from RfA early; I'll review his record, but I'm sure I'll be happy to co-nominate. Having said that, if you think the RfA crowd has it for you... I think they might want to execute me! ;) (I'm admittedly a conservative commenter on this issue, more willing to risk any "popularity" by opposing than the average person, I think.) On the other hand, it is always a positive for a candidate when a former opposer steps up to stand for him, so I think I'm a good bet here. I'll have my co-nomination up by Sunday, 0100 UTC, unless I hear otherwise. Rigadoun can post the RfA himself when he's done with the questions, or I'll post it by 1400 UTC, Monday, if no one else has. Best wishes, Xoloz 03:19, 2 November 2007 (UTC)

Sorry my co-nomination (now in place) was hours late: who knew I could have a social life on a Saturday night? Not I, but miracles happen! ;) Anyway, I looked him over thoroughly and was frankly amazed at the variety of his work. I really cannot imagine any rationale for opposition -- you pick fine candidates! Best wishes, Xoloz 15:30, 4 November 2007 (UTC)

When I withdrew from my first RFA, User:Xoloz (who had opposed) offered to nom me if I waited a few months, and he seems to be pretty active at RFA (I'm not sure if he's in the "popular crowd"--I don't follow RFA that closely and don't know much about its politics). I haven't been involved in much conflict since my last RFA (where I described two for Q3, relatively minor ones). I think I know the policies pretty well; I'm reviewing them now. I will be gone tomorrow and Saturday, would it be better to wait a bit so that I can address the questions that usually come up for candidates? Btw, congratulations on your triple crown. I still don't have any GA or FA; I guess I'm more interested in getting articles off to a good start than perfecting what's there. Rigadoun (talk) 19:22, 1 November 2007 (UTC)
Thanks for doing the nomination; I actually was pretty busy in real life Sunday too but eventually answered the questions and got the request up. My RFA

Thanks for finally supporting me! Here I thought you were trying to show that I could pass with one nominator tied behind my back. :) Seriously, thanks for all the work you put into my nomination; I think it paid off by going quite smoothly. I actually wasn't even that nervous after a few supports came in from people I didn't know, and found that I had correctly followed the directions and not said something stupid. I'm enjoying the extra buttons, but it does seem a little belligerent that there is a block option next to each user's name...I had imagined it would be a little more subtle. I deleted a few expired prods for practice, I think I did it right; perhaps you can keep an eye on my admin actions for a bit and let me know if I do something stupid. The rollback is pretty convenient, too, much faster than undo. Rigadoun (talk) 22:55, 12 November 2007 (UTC)

Sumatran Rhino...

Smithsonian Institution-Firestone Expedition

There's another detail you may wish to include in the article. According to the 1959 zoo yearbook William Mann actually brought a pair of pygmy hippos back from Liberia in 1940. It says they brought back an adult female (Matilda) and a young male which died May 3, 1943, so it also lived at the National Zoo for three years. I wonder whether they intended to have a second breeding pair rather than provide Billy with a second mate, perhaps to diversify the gene pool. The article uses two different spellings for pigmy. By a strange coincidence I was planning to tell you that I also found an interesting article about a Sumatran rhinoceros at Copenhagen Zoo. That was before I saw the above message. According to the article the Copenhagen and Basle zoos mounted a joint expedition to capture Sumatran rhinos, along with an Indonesian zoo, to start a captive breeding program. I think they only returned with one female each for Copenhagen and Basle zoos, and by the time of writing Basle Zoo's animal had already expired. They had a number of Sumatran rhinos escape in Indonesia, and then captured more and released most of them. I think the first Sumatran rhinos bred in captivity were in Calcutta Zoo. I can't remember whether it was just one, about a hundred years before the first births at the Cincinnati Zoo, and I think one or more of the offspring may have gone to an American circus. I just checked. It was 112 years earlier at Calcutta Zoo, just one birth. I thought there might have been two. I should double check that. I have seen Sumatran rhinos in Los Angeles and San Diego. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 72.1.195.4 (talk) 15:28, 16 November 2007 (UTC)

Re: dinothoughts

Hi Jay,

Thanks so much for your comments on my talk page. with your permission, I'd like to move them over to WT:DINO, where everyone on the dinosaur project can see them, and possibly comment/bounce further ideas around. Your observations are exactly the sort of thing we need, because the project is so small that the number of ideas is limited to what six or seven people can think of. I'm really excited to get feedback from you, Jay.

The "paleobiology" section in these articles means just that: ancient biology, used to cover how these animals are thought to have lived. Thus, a feathers section in Dromaeosauridae just won't cut it in Ceratopsia.

I think you are right about need for some heading standardization in the higher level taxonomic groups. When we were doing a lot of genus-level articles only, we went with what we had: not every dinosaur has a ton of peer-reviewed studies on it, and so the headings had to be somewhat "personalized" for each genus... but I think at the family (or higher) level, there should be plenty of studies in most areas for a standardization of headings to work well.

Your suggestion about the physical comparisons of the genera within a family is a great one, I think. And your work on biology-related articles (like hippo) and thoughtful observations for improvement might really help right now on Wikipedia:Featured_article_candidates/Acrocanthosaurus. We don't get a lot of informed feedback from the WP community.

Finally, thank you for your very kind words on Styracosaurus. I was a major contributor to that article, and J. Spencer fixed my occasional stuff-ups. I'm quite proud of how the article turned out.

Best wishes and happy editing, Firsfron of Ronchester 00:35, 17 November 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for the welcome

Thanks, I appreciate it. I'm happy to work on fossil mammal pages since there really isn't much out there that isn't technical. Unlike dinos, paleomammal books for a broader audience seem to be few and far between. I like the fossil hippo pages. Its nice to see a fossil group done thoroughly. ---- Helioseus (talk) 21:08, 16 November 2007 (UTC)

Putting controversial species or genera together isn't a bad idea. For a pair like Paraceratherium and Indricotherium, the question of one or two genera may never be fully resolved. The type species are distinct but closely related. Since there's no objective genus concept, the question of one genus or two ends up being a matter of personal preference. The bigger problem of conflicting taxonomies isn't helped by the fact that McKenna and Bell's classification is pretty idiosyncratic. It has a bad habit of conflicting with the more focused studies, so you do end up with the potential for multiple parallel classifications. On the plus side, some of the problems with Madagascar hippos should be resolvable. There's already DNA from a few of the Malagasy subfossil lemurs. Hippo DNA might at least resolve the question of how many species are present. --Helioseus (talk) 15:25, 18 November 2007 (UTC)

A blunt answer

I dont know if your question elsewhere was rhetorical. But the answer is simple.

No editor should be removed other than for clear, well defined, serious, damaging, unremedied (or anticipated) problems associated with their editing. If they are, then something's probably not right.

I'm sure there are exceptions, and also note this is a very simplistic version of a very complex subject, but that's about the "one line summary" of it.

No great discussion needed; thought a note was in order.

Sumatran rhinoceros & white tiger

A friend has offered photographs of Sumatran rhinos at the Cincinnati Zoo. How do I send them to you? The Cincinnati Zoo has also had great success breeding black rhinos of the eastern and southern subspecies. There was a link between the white tiger wikipedia article and the bigcatrescue website and an article titled "The White Tiger Fraud" by Dr. Laughlin. His article is extremely inaccurate and I've removed the link before and explained my reason to wikipedia, to CambridgeBayWeather. I've also e-mailed bigcatrescue pointing out errors in Dr. Laughlin's article. I think the message under "Truth About White Tigers" in the discussion section of the wikipedia article may have been their reply to my e-mails. They have'nt corrected the errors in the article on their website, but they seem to have added a small part from the wikipedia article, which I recognize in my own words, but misrepresenting what I actually said. They say that all white tigers are cross eyed for example. Only a small percentage are. They say that white tigers have an 80% infant mortality which is rubbish. They seem to have a vendetta against white tigers. In the portions of the wikipedia article which I have written I have strived to present the facts without taking any position on whether white tigers are a good idea or not. Maybe they are'nt. The readers should be able to decide for themselves on the basis of factual information. Dr. Laughlin has had business dealings with the Hawthorn Circus. I mentioned a white tiger named Frosty in the article who was born in 1975. Dr. Laughlin bought tiger cubs from the Hawthorn Circus which were sired by Frosty. Subsequently there was a court case involving Dr. Laughlin and the Hawthorn Circus. I don't want to say anything more about this, but I know all of the details, and I think this may have colored Dr. Laughlin's perception. Will you please make sure the link to bigcatrescue is permanently gone from the wikipedia article? I did'nt write all of the article and I know I don't own it. I want it to be as accurate as possible and wikipedia does readers a disservice by refering them to a source as bias as bigcatrescue and Dr. Laughlin's white tiger fraud. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 72.1.195.4 (talk) 15:34, 20 November 2007 (UTC)

bigctrescue

I also found this http://flickr.com/groups/flickrfavoriteanimals/discuss/72157600060363432/ TatmanduaGirl says: "That ridiculous BigCatRescue white tiger article is a pack of lies and false information. I have sent them the real facts, but they don't want to listen." Dr. Laughlin's white tiger fraud is also used as a source for the white tiger article on wikipedia, not just an external link, which I think is a problem. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 72.1.195.4 (talk) 16:32, 20 November 2007 (UTC)

Nexis help

Hey there! Hope all is well. I'm wondering if you can help me find an article someone cited today that I cannot find/verify: John Caroll. "Cillian Murphy", Irish Examiner, Monday January 10, 2005. Any help is appreciated. Thanks, Melty girl (talk) 01:45, 27 November 2007 (UTC)

Today was nuts, but I'm guessing it's probably worse for more controversial subjects. I've now learned that the main page is not really such a great thing. All day long the article was attacked. 97% of the edits were either vandalism or they introduced previously eliminated or new problems into the article. It's actually pretty amazing how quick people are to carelessly edit an FA; others were trying to do good but violated WP style/policies or just didn't take the time to read the article closely enough to realize why their edits were not helpful. It's the blessing and the curse of Wikipedia that anyone can edit an article of any quality. I'm so busy protecting my first FA from backsliding away from FA and down the road to FAR that I'm hesitant to put as much work into the other articles I've spent time on. But perhaps I'm just feeling sleepy and irritable... Anyway, I would love it if you could find that article for me. Thanks! --Melty girl (talk) 07:14, 27 November 2007 (UTC)

Comment on images at Knut (polar bear) FAC?

Hello, you had previously commented at the Knut FAC and had mentioned your approval of the two fair use images, which now seem to be under fire. I was wondering if you would be willing to have a second look and give me your honest opinion since you have fair more experience in this than I do. This is my first FAC, and although I'm certain that the fair use images are encyclopedic, apparently there is concern that the images are "too cute" to be notable and should be replaced by images from the commons. Thanks for your time, María (habla conmigo) 14:25, 28 November 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for your comment at the FAC, I greatly appreciate the addition of Wiki-jargon that I'm not well versed in when it comes to images. I agree that it seems to be a white or black issue, but I'd really hate to give those images up. It's a good thing I didn't upload, in addition to the others, the cover the American Vanity Fair's Green Issue with Knut and Leonardo DiCaprio. That would have been fun to defend!
As for the FAC process, I'd be lying if I were to say I'm enjoying it. I am glad, however, that there's not as much opposition as I was expecting. This is such an odd article as far as articles go, and although I thought I'd be debating the usage of "he" rather than "it," or even the notability of a polar bear, it hasn't been horrendous by any means. I thought there would be more voting and less interpretation of image policy, or just more attention paid in general; after all, this was an internationally sensationalist topic less than eight months ago. I guess that just shows the shelf life of all news stories, huh? Thanks again for your comments and your kind offer to help in the future. Let me know if there are any famous hippos that need articles. :) María (habla conmigo) 13:26, 29 November 2007 (UTC)
What a cool article! I'd never heard of Billy before, so I'm glad I got to read about him. I wouldn't rule out GA status, however; someone randomly nominated Knut's article for GA over the summer, without even so much as one edit, and I of course thought it would fail horribly. Lo and behold, the wonderful reviewer thought it had a shot and gave me some pointers. After it passed they had to create a new category on the GA page for Knut to fit into, unique thing that he is, so maybe polar bear cubs and pygmy hippos can exist harmoniously in one tiny section of Wikipdia one day. :) The only famous hippo I knew of before now is Owen of Owen and Mzee fame; not a ref listed! Tsk. María (habla conmigo) 23:57, 29 November 2007 (UTC)
I was considering calling in a bomb threat to the entire Berlin Zoo tomorrow during Knut's birthday celebration to rid myself of an impending nervous breakdown, but luckily The Calvary has arrived just in time! < cue trumpet fanfare > Why, oh why, didn't I submit a more mundane topic (like fungus or spores or something) for my first FAC? Why did I have to pick the cute and cuddwy thing with the wittle button nose? I think it's getting somewhat ugly now, and I'm nearly close to either blowing up or just ignoring whatever comes next. It would seem that this individual's comments on other FAC have been met with similar resistance, so perhaps it's not just me? Is this normal? Can an article pass even with this hoopla staining its candidacy page? María (habla conmigo) 19:07, 5 December 2007 (UTC)

No worries

Jay, thanks for the follow-up note. Not to worry, I took no offence whatsoever. Indeed, as I did it I though that it might be inappropriate, but I couldn't find a statement anywhere to that effect. And thanks for your kind words about my return. It is nice to be back. Perhaps we will run into one another a little more frequently now. All the best. Next FA

Thanks for the insight, I appreciate it. I'm going to (attempt to) take your advice and lay low for a while, see how it pans out. But it's funny you mention literature-focused reviewers, because I've just made the acquaintance of the mind bogglingly talented Awadewit; we began a donation drive to encourage FA coverage of Spanish language literature, in fact. I noticed that both of the articles we're working on (Jane Austen for her and another user, and Emily Dickinson for me) to enter into Danny's core article contest happen to be FAs en español, but there's no FA coverage, nada, regarding Spanish language lit. here on the English language Wikipedia. Que horrible! So it seems I've crash landed into this wonderful world of scholarly, intelligent, literature snobs that will hopefully have enough interest and patience to want to help out a novice with good intentions. Although Dickinson may not be in my top ten per se, she is proving to be a great challenge. It used to be a GA, back when the criteria was far less stringent, but hopefully soon I'll be ready to begin the nerve wrecking process once again. This time, however, I'll be sure to have backup. :) María (habla conmigo) 03:05, 6 December 2007 (UTC)

My first barnstar! Thank you, I'm honored! Thank goodness it was promoted; I was so surprised/pleased/etc. when I saw, I nearly squealed -- not a good idea since I'm at work. ;) Take care, and hopefully I'll see you around FA sometime soon! María (habla conmigo) 13:09, 7 December 2007 (UTC)
Doh! Thanks for telling me, I wouldn't have known. Oh, and very nice couplet, btw. "Emilie" would have been proud. :) María (habla conmigo) 02:58, 8 December 2007 (UTC)

The template's still pretty empty - why not just re-add them? And don't worry about it: These things happen. Adam Cuerden talk 03:41, 7 December 2007 (UTC)

Hello, Jay. I've never met you in Wikipedia before! Of course, it's a big place. A hook that you placed, Dennis Freeman, lacks a reference to the fact stated in the hook. The fact is in the article but not referenced by reference #1, which is a few sentences later. I should have placed a note under the hook, not just at the author's talk page. I don't have any reason to doubt the truth of the hook so there's no big harm done. Archtransit (talk) 16:56, 7 December 2007 (UTC)

Salinger

Hello! Thanks again for getting the whole ball rolling on this Salinger thing. I have tried to address all of Scartol's sharp comments in his review of the article, but am having trouble with one. (See the talk page.) I was wondering if you had any suggestions? Thanks, Hobbesy3 (talk) 03:42, 30 November 2007 (UTC)

Yah, I will probably be tied up with schoolwork until January. I may take you up on your offer then, though. Thanks! Hobbesy3 (talk) 19:49, 8 December 2007 (UTC)
Actually, would you willing to archive the contents of the Salinger talk page? It's getting pretty long, and I'm not sure how to create talk page archives. Thanks, Hobbesy3 (talk) 02:54, 9 December 2007 (UTC)

Citation clean-up

No, you're absolutely right. I was testing a tool a friend developed to work on citations and as you've seen, it doesn't distinguish between news and book sources in formatting. I just uploaded a photo I took at a fundraiser of Ryan White and am adding it to the article, and I will fix those pesky little errors as I do. Thanks. Wildhartlivie (talk) 01:19, 11 December 2007 (UTC)

Gee, thanks so much!! I saw the imbedded note about the photo, and knew I had one somewhere that I took. I wish it was a bit sharper, but at least there is one now. He was a remarkable young man. Living in Indiana was a stressful experience during that controversy, but it afforded me the opportunity to meet him, and then later, to attend his calling and funeral and to meet others whom he had touched. Thanks for the barnstar. Wildhartlivie (talk) 01:43, 11 December 2007 (UTC)

Great success!

My RfA

So, in your opinion, administrators should be content writers? I don't think any of the administrator tools are useful in writing new content, but in the cleanup and maintenance of Wikipedia. An administrator is like a janitor (thus sometimes the term "mop" is substituted for the word "tools"), they clean up and maintain. If you were interviewing a potential janitor for a publishing company, would one of the prerequisites be that they be a prolific writer? And, before you say something to the effect that I haven't done a lot of anti-vandalism/cleanup work, consider this: How many people use tools like twinkle, amelvand, popups, vandalfighter, and the like to fight vandalism on their main account? Well I use ClueBot to fight vandalism, I just use it on a separate account. ClueBot is simply a tool, not a sentient being. Thanks for taking the time to read this.  :) -- Cobi(t|c|b|cn) 03:31, 13 December 2007 (UTC)

Do you think I would make poor decisions in the anti-vandalism field? If not, would it make a difference if you knew I wouldn't branch out into the other fields without being sure of myself and understanding all related policies? (And in your analogy, not only did I make the vacuum cleaner, but I also operate it ;) ) -- Cobi(t|c|b|cn) 05:19, 13 December 2007 (UTC)
Yes, ClueBot was my entry in the Siemens Competition.  :) -- Cobi(t|c|b|cn) 07:08, 13 December 2007 (UTC)

Hi Jay, I am enjoying admin life pretty well, I've actually become more active in AFD and tracking prods than I had imagined. I guess that's what happens when you have new tools to try out. Top Ten OMG WTH American Writers

Well, if it's for the future scholars...

  • 10. Mark Twain: He once said he wanted to dig up Jane Austen and "beat her over the skull with her own shinbone." Oh, Samuel, you old joker.
  • 9. Truman Capote: Odd for the sake of being odd. He even created his own genre for his fascinating mishmash of a book.
  • 8. Henry Miller: Viva la Sexual Revolución! No wonder he went through five wives.
  • 7. Miss "Emilie" herself: Prolific Spinster and Recluse – / Clothed only in White – / She had a Thing for Married men / and – possibly – her brother's Wife.
  • 6. Walt Whitman: He sang the "body electric" and I've heard that it's rather shocking; something to do with good looking, working class men, I think?
  • 5. Ernest Hemingway: "Papa" to some, misogynist eccentric to others. His strange hybrid cats live on, however!
  • 4. Sylvia Plath: Serious Daddy issues, among others. She ruined bell jars for me; science experiments were never the same after I read that book.
  • 3. Ezra Pound: He just... well... I think this says it all, don't you?
  • 2. William S. Burroughs: He believed that by continuously becoming addicted to and then weaning himself off of heroin his cells would continue to be "reborn" and he would live forever. He made it until 90, which is pretty darn close.
  • 1. Edgar Allan Poe: 19th century poetic version of Jerry Lee Lewis who wrote macabre lines and died under crazy-weird circumstances. I vote for rabies; that's so goth.

Tune in next time for the Top Ten OMG BBQ British Writers list, which includes some of my very favorites.  ;) María (habla conmigo) 23:57, 15 December 2007 (UTC)

Oh, how could I forget Hunter S. Thompson and Thomas Pynchon? Surely this should be a Top Twelve or Thirteen list. Although I agree that Twain and Hemingway's writing may not induce many OMG WTH sentiments (although I, with a minor in Women and Gender Studies, have been known to throw multiple Hemingway works across the room in frustration), I believe that the eccentricities and WTFness surrounding the authors' lives often color how we read and interpret their works. Twain is considered by most a lovable oddball and Hemingway, scarred by war, was a chronic depressive and womanizer. And, yes, the cat thing freaks me out. You do make valid arguments, however, so I will be sure to consider your suggestions for future use! María (habla conmigo) 00:01, 17 December 2007 (UTC)

Review page

Hi, Jay, I db-authored my review page again, because it really wasn't ready and it was in embarrassingly poor shape. I tried to quickly finish it up, but with the holidays approaching, I can't do it justice. You might want to remove that comment from your FAC, since it's now a redlink. I get criticized enough that I really don't relish being criticized over a page that was still half-baked. Best, SandyGeorgia (Talk) 01:54, 16 December 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for understanding; I'll try to work on it on my harddrive after the holidays. Best, SandyGeorgia (Talk) 21:08, 16 December 2007 (UTC)

Ban Ki-moon being secular

The cited article only says that "Mr Ban does not belong to any church or religious group, believing that faith is an individual matter." [1] But this isn't quite equivalent to the express confession of espousing secularism or atheism, for you could still be (for example) a Christian as an individual without belonging in any church or denomination. He only says that it's "an individual matter," not that he doesn't have any (religious) faith even as an individual. --61.198.209.248 (talk) 06:23, 18 December 2007 (UTC)

Copyvio discussion

Hi Jay, We're writing at the same time here. I have no objection to a list of historical winners being copied, but it's the citation that has been copied here, without quotation marks, e.g. "For her compelling portrait of a baseball umpire who endured the death of a son while knowing that another son suffers from the same deadly genetic disease." That's wherein the plagiarism lies. Bruxism (talk) 07:26, 19 December 2007 (UTC)

P.S. Where in Romania did you live? Bruxism (talk) 07:28, 19 December 2007 (UTC)
About your comments on my talk page - no worries. I didn't want to sound rude either. I'm just a real hawk when it comes to possible plagiarism. More experienced minds than ours can figure this out in the morning. I think I say I am ro-1 on my page, but that only means I can kind of make things out. Lucky you to have lived in Braşov. La mulţi ani! Bruxism (talk) 07:56, 19 December 2007 (UTC)

Thank you for your support in my RfA. It was definitely a dramatic debate! I paid close attention to everything that was said, and, where possible, I will try to incorporate the (constructive) criticism towards being a better administrator. I'm taking things slowly for now, partially because it's the holiday season and there are plenty of off-wiki distractions. :) I'm also working my way through the Wikipedia:New admin school and double-checking the relevant policies, and will gradually phase into the use of the new tools. My main goals are to help out with various backlogs, but I also fully intend to keep on writing articles, as there are several more that I definitely want to get to WP:FA status! Thanks again, Elonka 06:54, 22 December 2007 (UTC)

DYK expansion article question

I'm trying something more ambitious this time: an expansion of Navajo rug. Here's what it looked like before I started working on it yesterday. The DYK instructions say it needs to be five times the original size, which sets a fairly high hurdle. I've brought it up to about triple so far and have enough reference material that I think I can meet that standard. My previous DYKs have all been new articles. AfD nomination of Sunil Sawani

An editor has nominated Sunil Sawani, an article on which you have worked or that you created, for deletion. We appreciate your contributions, but the nominator doesn't believe that the article satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion and has explained why in his/her nomination (see also "What Wikipedia is not").

Your opinions on whether the article meets inclusion criteria and what should be done with the article are welcome; please participate in the discussion by adding your comments at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Sunil Sawani and please be sure to sign your comments with four tildes (~~~~).

You may also edit the article during the discussion to improve it but should not remove the articles for deletion template from the top of the article; such removal will not end the deletion debate. Thank you. BJBot (talk) 04:31, 1 January 2008 (UTC)

Hey, Jay, happy holidays to you as well! Funny you bring this up, because I was going to go to the zoo today and we happen to have a few lazy white rhinos here in Jax. :) I'd love to help you out, and I definitely owe you one, so I'll take a look at the article later on today -- keeping Tony's pointers in mind, of course. Should I comment on the FAC page, the article's talk page, or here? María (habla conmigo) 14:33, 28 December 2007 (UTC)

I only had a few suggestions, so rather than jabbering in two places, I added them to the FAC page under a comment. I wish I could help with the more scientific aspects of the article, but I am an English major for a reason. :) I hope you agree with the copy-editing and I can't wait to see what the article looks like once you get more time to play with it. I really enjoyed reading about these special rhinos; it's one animal I've never really given much thought. Oh, and all I saw yesterday were a couple white rhinos napping under a tree, alas. All of that wallowing must be exhausting, huh? Take care and enjoy the rest of your vacation! María (habla conmigo) 16:16, 29 December 2007 (UTC)
Cool, I'll take a look at the rhino changes later on when I get a chance. I don't think I'm doing this right, but I did'nt want to bother CambridgeBayWeather again. I left you another message in Billy. I also found another reference in the Reader's Digest To Periodocal Literature. I wanted to see if there was a National Geographic article about Billy from 1927. Instead I found this: Buck, J.L., "Horace my pigmy hippo", Asia, 27:16-20 Jan. '27. I don't have this article. I have some hippo trivia. I've heard that George Washington's dentures were made of hippo ivory. Also the "behemoth", mentioned in the Bible, was the hippopotamus. Maybe you know this. I looked into it when I heard creationists claiming that the behemoth was a dinosaur. Behemoth is derived from the Egyptian for "water ox", and that's what they called the hippo. I knew a creapy old man in Montreal and years later I discovered that he had riden a hippo on television. His name was Gerald Iles and he was the director of the Manchester Zoo before 1960. I also found out that anyone with an AZA membership can look at the regional pygmy hippo studbook online. If you want I can ask a friend to download it for you. I was also looking at an article written by William Mann in the April 1957 National Geographic. He talked about the capture of the 1940 female "Matilda", and he said they had to carry her in a crate 40 miles to a road. There's a picture in the article of a common hippo which was brought from Africa in 1914, so it had been in the National Zoo for 43 years. There was a second smaller hippo in the photo. Sincerely Paul PS Billy's studbook number is in the new message I left in Billy pygmy hippo.

If you feel all of your points must be addressed for you to support the FAC, that's fine - but I did try to address some of them verbatim as per your suggestions/comments, and there were only two or so other points that I felt were good ideas - but shouldn't necessarily hold the article back from WP:FA status. I'm charged with making the reservations for us, so let's make it official. We'll do this via voting and everyone including anonymous voters, sockpuppets, and canvassed supporters is enfranchised. Voting irregularities and election fraud are encouraged as that would be really amusing in this instance. Please vote for whichever restaurant you would like to eat at given the information provided above and your own personal prejudices at Wikipedia:Meetup/NYC#Let's make it official. The prevailing restaurant will be called first for the reservation. If a reservation cannot be obtained at the winning restaurant, the runner-up restaurant will be called thus making this entire process pointless. Greetings

It was nice of you to link to my reply to Rjgibb on talk:FAC, but I felt bad because it probably sounded harsh. I stand by the essence of what I said, though. People surely can tell from my previous work that I appreciate (and did) copy-editing, and I appreciate well-styled articles. It's the approach to these issues at FAC that incited my original comment. The approach is easy to mimic, too, requiring little engagement, as opposed to substantive review commentary, so it just takes off. I'm not the first person to say that you can find something wrong with any article when you're out to do so. And that seems to be what some FACs turn into; it's taken way too seriously in the name of "wikipedia's best". While the "judging" readers are looking for lucid writing, maybe, they aren't going to consider Wikipedia a failure because the FA writer said "as well as" instead of "and", or because a measurement broke across a line. These are nice-to-haves, but the amount of push behind them seems more agenda-driven than a service to the reader. (Yes, I still read around here!) TTYL, –Outriggr § 03:01, 11 January 2008 (UTC)

Hi there. While I am not an expert on Hemingway, I do have a BA in English and have read his novels and short stories. I have read two Hemingway biographies, and by virtue of having an English degree I can do research. What I mean to say is that I can help with future articles on Hemingway and his works. Let me know... —Preceding unsigned comment added by Lavery789 (talkcontribs) 01:24, 13 January 2008 (UTC)

Hippos and Balzac

Did you know that the Egyptian god Set is sometimes depicted as a hippopotamus? (In at least one telling of his battle with Horus, Set is said to have taken the form of a hippo.) When we did that part of our Egyptian mythology unit this year, I thought of you.

But that's not why I'm here! Le Père Goriot, often called Balzac's most important book, is on its way to FAC. First stop: peer review. Care to have a look? Cheers! – Scartol • Tok 22:02, 19 January 2008 (UTC)

There's a new bear in town

Thanks for reverting the "trivia" on Knut's article; I'm not sure where these vandals are getting their info, but that's the third time I've seen someone add "dog" or "puppy" to the article. Bzuh? Granted, he does like to "fetch" (not so much with the bringing stuff back, though), but when was the last time you saw a 300 lb dog? On a similar note, have you heard of the newest polar bear star, little Flocke from Nuremberg? Cue the media circus and resultant Wikipedia article...! Emma Watson FAC

It would be lovely if you decided to return to the Emma Watson FAC. The article has been redrafted, but there are some slightly odd things afoot. Would love to hear your opinion. --Melty girl (talk) 03:23, 22 January 2008 (UTC)

Hey back atcha! Agreed about the "little insight", but I commented exactly what you said about her being a young actor with a narrow career. I highly doubt that any publication has done an essay on the meaning of Emma Watson yet! I feel like "insight" is often beaten out of WP articles anyway. :( Oh, and totally agreed about Ellen Page and Juno! --Melty girl (talk) 03:46, 22 January 2008 (UTC)
Did you know that even though Emma Watson has referred to herself as a feminist on a minimum of two (sourced) occasions, that we must not mention that she thinks of herself this way, because readers might think she's a bra-burner? Sigh. These are the things that make me think I should stay away from the FAC process. If you have time... --Melty girl (talk) 02:09, 24 January 2008 (UTC)

19th-century novels task force

Hi, JayHenry/archives2. I'm starting up a 19th-century novels task force for WP:NOVELS. Heroes peer review

I noticed that your user name was on the Wikipedia:Peer review/volunteers list. I was wondering if you could take some time out of your schedule to head over to the Heroes (TV series) talkpage and give us an honest peer review. The page has gone through some major changes in the last few months, and it would be fantastic if a prominent editor/contributor like yourself, could head over and give us at the Heroes Wikiproject some sound opinion and ideas on improvements for the page. We have all worked very hard at improving the page, and we need great outside, reliable and trustworthy users to come over and help us improve. I you are interested in joining the peer review discussion with other prominent users/contributors, much like yourself, please follow the link. No problem with that at all, I take your point completely; but if I'm asked general questions, I will give general answers, as it seems unnecessary to go into detail beyond what is asked. I thank you for your neutrality- at least that tells me that I may not have got all of it wrong. I said up front that I'd made mistakes. WikiProject Academic Journals

Hi there. Things have gone a bit quiet over at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Academic Journals (I didn't check in for a long time myself). I've started up two new subpages at Wikipedia:WikiProject Academic Journals/Images and Wikipedia:WikiProject Academic Journals/Scope (please see the talk pages as well), in the hope that this might generate some comment or activity. I've notified three other active contributors, but what about the others on the members list? A newsletter seems overkill at the moment, but is there a way to keep things more active? The weekly collaborations seemed to work well for a while, but maybe a monthly one is better? Carcharoth (talk) 14:42, 27 January 2008 (UTC)

re: Zombies

Hi Bugbear, I've been here awhile so I've certainly seen WP:CABAL linked before... I'm not sure what point you hoped to get across, and I'm disappointed if my line of questioning seemed either ignorant or abstruse. Is your point: the editor is criticizing the Cabal, which is obviously valid criticism? Is your point: the editor is calling a certain group of people Cabalists, which is afoul of NPA? Or that criticizing cabalism is unfair, pointless, incorrect, etc. I asked a very specific question and "WP:CABAL" wasn't really an answer at all. I'm curious what you hoped to convey with the link. --JayHenry (talk) 02:59, 29 January 2008 (UTC)

Sorry if my answer seemed obtuse. Whether or not they actually feel this way, the editor in question (whose name I removed from the page) and the author of the page seem to feel that there is a sizable coalition of SPAs here on Wikipedia to spread their homeopathic agenda. (Having mediated and been backseated in an ArbCom case relating to alternative medicine, I would stake that this group are neither a sizable number nor particularly coordinated.) They, and a larger group of supporters, seem to be under the impression that these alternative-medicine SPAs are trying to drive out well-meaning defenders of the wiki, including (perhaps especially) the editor whose name I excised. What's more, they have vocalized the opinion -- and have gotten at least one admin to back them up -- that anyone who does not share or at least sympathize with their view of this troublesome cabal is either in cahoots with them or too cowardly to stand up to them. There is an implicit corollary to this argument that the rules do not apply to those trying to stop this cabal; i.e., "zombies" in this sense are people who do not believe that things that have wide community consensus such as the need for civility and the enforceability of ArbCom decisions are less important than defending the wiki against SPAs. In this sense this essay is at least partially targeted at me -- I blocked the editor in question in connection with an ArbCom ruling for gross incivility, and was berated for "condoning" the SPAs' efforts to drive him away. - Revolving Bugbear 17:32, 29 January 2008 (UTC)

Street Children

Greetings,

I recently embarked on a complete re-write of the Wikipedia article on street children: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Street_children Before I did this I made a few contributions on the article's talk page (the three at the bottom of the page): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Street_children However, I had a growing feeling that I had so many quibbles with the article that I should attempt a completely new version rather than trying to fix what was there. The new article is about 90% finished but I suspect there is a lot wrong with it. And while I worry away at what remains to be written I would appreciate any criticism that can help me to make this a better and more Wikipedian article. My version of the article may be found at User talk:Almudo/Streetchildren. Thanks Almudo (talk) 18:55, 5 February 2008 (UTC)Almudo

align="bottom"

Hi, I just popped over to you page to see who I was replying to at Seresin's RfA. I noticed that many of your userspace pages include align="bottom" which is invalid; use center, left, right if you must use align. Mebbe you meant valign. CSS style are always preferred. I considered tweaking you pages, but figured talk first. I like the tabbed look you're using. Cheers, Jack Merridew 11:56, 11 February 2008 (UTC)

I've just removed the align="bottom" from all of the pages linked from your top-level menu and all looks fine still. I will look with some other browsers. I noticed some other things, like the Hippos page is spitting an error about a ref which I didn't look at. I will probably hit each page again with a few other bits of tidying. FYI, I have a Validator installed which offers warnings and errors about every page I view; your pages were getting the Red Bullet w/White "X"; now you get the Green one with the Check (on most, at least). Cheers, Jack Merridew 09:26, 12 February 2008 (UTC)

Pattern Recognition

Thanks for reviewing the article for GA. I saw your note about further comments. I opened a peer review for it where you can place your comments: Wikipedia:WikiProject Novels/Peer review/Pattern Recognition (novel). Two questions I have for you are:

  1. Are the Themes and Genre sections clear? Those sections involved synthesizing academic papers (written in academic language) into an article that should be accessible to a less experienced crowd - doing so without losing the point.
  2. When this goes to FAC (late-Feb/early-March) will you follow through with a review there, as well?

Thank you. --maclean 01:23, 15 February 2008 (UTC)

Thanks and no problem, if you ever find anything then feel free to e-mail me (I should have the feature activated) or maybe even just drop it on my talk page if it's not too long. I'll try to look for some sources, but like you said, the release date poses a problem and there aren't many reliable sources out there that cover Reservoir Dogs, most of them seem fan-based, not to mention the Reservoir Dogs article itself consisted of 80% unreferenced trivia a few weeks ago and it's difficult to build an article based on that. I would be very grateful if you would be able to find something, thanks in advance!--The Dominator (talk) 07:03, 14 February 2008 (UTC)

question

Do you actually believe you know better what I want to say than I do myself? User:Dorftrottel 20:24, February 19, 2008

Just in case you feel like needlessly derailing and discrediting me some more in the wrong venue without any problem-oriented arguments, I recommend a bolded link to my block log. Example: See also Dorftrottel's block log. Just like anything else you posted there, it will not help the discussion move forward in the least, but it will make you cool. User:Dorftrottel 21:17, February 19, 2008
Another thing. What really stumps me is how you focused on my first posting in that section. Did you not see the second? It's far far worse. User:Dorftrottel 23:15, February 19, 2008

Sorry for being a bit bitey. It's just, I think cursing is harmless and I can relate to people who do it like Seresin in that diff presented at his RfA. There's far worse things imo. User:Dorftrottel 23:52, February 19, 2008

I completely agree that DGG is one of the most competent and friendliest editors around, sorry to give a different impression than that. I've regularly gone to DGG for advice in regards to AFDs, deletion v. inclusion etc. Calling him an "inclusionist" I don't believe would be considered an insult to David. If so, I'll apologize to him as well. That being said, I believe Dorftrottel has many valid points (with a much more upfront way of saying them, true) and he is too easily disregarded because of the "flavour" of his posts instead of the content, which is usually spot on in my experience. Again, sorry to mislead. I think just looking at DGG's talkpage and archives would suffice to make anyone believe that he is valued around here, including by me (and probably Dorftrottel, though I hesitate to speak for anyone else).
