Re: Putney High School

Hi, sorry to trouble you, but you deleted my edit of Putney High School, which i feel to be rather unfair. I made a valuable contribution to the page, citing true details about the school. I spoke 100% the truth, as i went there and can give an accurate description, unlike you (no offence....) I hope that you reconsider your actions, Thank you for your time. People1345

DYK

Updated DYK query On January 19, 2007, Did you know? was updated with a fact from the article Ken Okuyama, which you created or substantially expanded. If you know of another interesting fact from a recently created article, then please suggest it on the "Did you know?" talk page.

As you set out for Ithaka, hope the voyage is long
Knowledge is your destiny, but don't ever hurry the journey
May there be many summer mornings when
With what pleasure and joy, you come into harbors seen for the first time

Don't expect Ithaka to make you rich. Ithaka gave you the marvelous journey
And, if I, one of your fellow-travellers, can offer something
To make this journey of yours even more fascinating and enjoyable
This is my assistance with anything I can help.

Image OTRS

Hi - I've added that tag as requested - unfortunately I've been fairly inactive due to internet problems, leading me to take a while to respond to your message on my talk page (and meaning that I haven't been dealing with any OTRS requests), and we've fairly backlogged on OTRS anyway, which is probably why no-one resolved your request earlier. Please convey our thanks to the copyright holder for licensing the image in this way :), thanks, Martinp23 17:50, 28 January 2007 (UTC)

I'm getting sleepy and slow at the moment. You mean you saved it off flickr, opened it up in an image editor and then saved it as PNG? Important thing is not to save a jpeg as a jpeg, as this causes it to degrade. — coelacan talk — 08:46, 30 January 2007 (UTC)

Hi James086...

First of all, I may be an extra lightweight Wikipedia user but am by no means a n00b; especially with the Wiki format (including the politics). Maybe I was a bit 'harsh' in my edit but, considering the context...well, c'mon: a class action against a troll site? That's comedy gold.

I won't attempt to reword it -or add:

Also See

Class Action

Frivolous Litigation

Troll Organization

etc., etc.,

...but the 'plaintiffs' are asking for it and I think your wholesale reversion of my edit a tad unfair. But -as an admin- it's your Wiki so I know how that works, ie. you win. So maybe you can give these poor, misguided souls a word of advice before a). they waste their time and money on attempting legal action that has no chance in any court of law and b). invite further grief from ED.

If they think ED is brutal, they obviously don't get out (of Wikipedia) much. Wait until their discussion hits the /b/ board at 4Chan because that's where it's heading (the bloke who linked me to it is a card carrying EDiot and /b/tard).

Me?...I'm a Colbert Nationalist so no worries here mate.

Man the harpoons James!

Hi there! I will try going over the article tomorrow to highlight some of the issues (I'm a bit pressed for time, though, so don't quote me on that). In the meantime, you might want to take a look at the excellent guide User:Tony1/How to satisfy Criterion 1a. This guide discusses many of the prosaic problems that are present in the Maserati article, and offers some good solutions. Good luck! Cheers. --Plek 21:52, 4 February 2007 (UTC)

I fixed (edited) a page on 6/2/07 and i got a message the next day sayin it waz vandalism. i would like to know why it is vandalism. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 210.50.244.84 (talk) 05:18, 6 February 2007 (UTC).

I'm not sure which edit you are refering to, if you could say which article it was that you edited then I could have a look. I can't tell which article you edited because at the moment, you don't have an account. If you edit without an account then your edit is credited to your IP address and it seems that your IP address has changed since the edit so there's no way of finding out which article it was, other than your memory. Hoprefully you can remember and I can see what was wrong (if anything) with your edit. Thanks, James086Talk 22:55, 7 February 2007 (UTC)

hello, you recently sent me a message saying that I changed information in the Rockstar energy drink article. But I never even looked at that article. Maybe you made a mistake...or someone is using the same wireless internet connection as me. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 69.22.211.73 (talk) 13:48, 11 February 2007 (UTC).

If you did not edit that page but were on at the same time as the messages were posted then you are most likely using a shared IP. It doesn't neccessarily mean someone else is using your wireless connection, sometimes there can be thousands of people on one IP address regardless of whether it is wireless, DSL or cable. If the message wasn't intended for you then please disregard it. If you wish to avoid messages intended for other people you could create an account. That will also mean that if your IP address is blocked you won't be stopped from editing. Thanks for your time, James086Talk 22:49, 11 February 2007 (UTC)

Mistake?

I received a message from you, saying that I was experimenting with some page. Can this be a mistake? I don't remember vandalising anything, unless my brain is damaged. Mind clearing this up? Your message can be found on my talk page.[1] 24.181.231.73 16:01, 23 February 2007 (UTC)

Because you don't have an account, any edits are assigned to your IP address. IP addresses can change so you probably would have had a different IP on the 17 November 2006. Someone else was most likely using it at this point. Sometimes there are people on a shared IP address despite having completely separate internet connections. I highly doubt the message was intended for you, and seeing as it has been 3 months since the warning was issued it won't be taken into account (others will assume the person behind this IP has changed). Seeing as the message wasn't for you, just disregard it, it doesn't affect you in any way. If you want to edit Wikipedia a lot, you can create an account which will prevent messages that aren't intended for you reaching you. But of course it's up to you. Thanks, James086Talk 01:10, 24 February 2007 (UTC)

Congrats. If you really want to be famous, you could un-{{adminbacklog}} WP:CFD. It's nearly there (after me spending three days closing "easy" CFDs), and there can only be a dozen or so CFDs open that need closing to get the real backlog out of the way. Since they are a bit on the controversial side, I didn't feel like closing them. Unlike AFD, CFD closes aren't that easily undone. All the best, Angus McLellan (Talk) 15:52, 25 February 2007 (UTC)

No I don't think it "sucks". I don't think it is a very good article, it just lists information, but this is Wikipedia and eventually someone will improve it. Again, instead of just commenting on how bad it is, why not do something to improve it? James086Talk 06:50, 3 March 2007 (UTC)

Administrator question

Hi, I was wondering how to become an editor or an admin? Whatever it is you people do.

Thanks, Mike L. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Clydedaferret (talkcontribs)

To become an administrator you need to submit a request for adminship. There are no official prerequisites but applications are almost guaranteed to fail if the user has fewer than 2000 edits and 3 months of fairly consistent contributions. Have a look at the current nominations to get an idea. James086Talk 07:10, 3 March 2007 (UTC)

User 62.85.192.81

Hello James086. Thank you for blocking the cited user. I just wanted to point out a couple of things. I feel that this editor may warrant a longer block as they were blocked for exactly this same reason recently and returned to their blanking vandalism when the block expired and I feel sure that these actions are the only ones that they will take when the current block expires. Also, I did not find a message on their talk page pointing out the 2nd block (though you may have added it while I was typing this). Well, in my opinion (and it is clearly shared by many FRUSTRATED EDITORS who have to spend time reverting this nonsense), blocking is the ONLY THING you can do to prevent some one(?) or many(?) from this constant vandalism.
If there is one thing which will drive me away from bothering to contribute to Wikipedia, it is this constant and annoying vandalism from unregistered people who seem to take a delight in their actions.
I do not buy into the bullshit of "anyone can edit" if this is the kind of thing and the kind of people who keep on doing it...... Viva-Verdi 18:12, 12 March 2007 (UTC)

Hi, yes it can be very frustrating when a vandal returns, I don't know what they feel they have achieved, but anyway. Obviously we don't want any collateral damage with non-vandals being blocked, see Blocking IP addresses but because it appears this vandal is persistent and they have a static IP address, if they return to vandalise again I will block for a month. I really hope you don't get driven from Wikipedia by someone with the childish hobby of ruining other's work, I assure you it is not worth the stress. They will be able to edit again on the 17th of March, if they persist with vandalism and I don't notice (or I may be offline) please leave a note on my talk page and I will check it out. Wrong Password

Dear James086:

Please excuse my not logging in to write you, but I can't. My Preferences page says I'm Bruce Bathurst. I created an account using the latest Safari on MacOSX 10.4.9. Safari allows cookies if they are sent from the domain 'wikipedia.org' (no 3d-party cookies). Is that my problem?

No matter what passwords I used, it wouldn't accept them; so I asked for one by e-mail. That worked fine. So, then I edited "Gibbs' phase rule' talk, and all worked fine: comments are still there. Then I wrote something about myself. Looked find. Then I logged out.

Again my password was 'wrong', and I logged in by requesting one. What I wrote about myself had been deleted, though what I wrote about Gibbs was still there.

Should I just accept the Administator's password and not change it? Or, do you recognize something I'm doing wrong?

Bruce Bathurst, PhD

PS. I'm a retired professional computer consultant.

168.150.253.56 22:04, 27 March 2007 (UTC)

You will have to use the new password, but once you log in I suggest changing it to your prefered password, simply so you can remember it. Problems similar to this often arise, and it's most likely an issue with cookies. You can try allowing all cookies from en.wikipedia.org though sometimes that doesn't work. If you find yourself still having troubles I recommend using the secure site ( https://en.wikipedia.org ). It's a bit slower than the normal site but is a lot more stable and therefore most browsers and security suites have no problems with it. When I use it (on another pc which has similar problems to your's) I don't notice any difference. I would suggest you keep on blocking 3rd party cookies simply for security on other sites. I hope it's helped, I can't really think of anything else. If you still have problems try asking at the Help desk where there are lots of people who will see your question. Please refrain from adding information like that to articles unless you cite a source for it. James086Talk | Email 09:41, 31 March 2007 (UTC)

What is wrong with you? Is it.... hmmmm everything? Why give me a warning? im trying to make a stupid club that will become famous. Not trying to be a spammer. If you.... if you don't replace my page OR delete my "last warning". I will go to drastic measures. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Reaper90210 (talkcontribs)

Please note that Wikipedia is not for things made up in school one day. Your group does not give a reason as to why it is notable enough for an article. You would need to cite multiple sources that are independant (like a newspaper, not a website that is created by the group) and are articles/stories/websites etc specifically about your group. Please don't take this personally but I highly doubt that your group can do that. James086Talk | Email 02:43, 1 April 2007 (UTC)

Alright so first of all Zackary Lane Castle is my best friend. And second of all i was just trying to make a page about me before I die...everybody needs to feel special...I mean it would it kill you to let me have my own page. I may not understand how all this works but I am willing to listen granted your approach is different. so the next time I need to hear some bigshot wikipedia wannabe make me feel like i'm 5...I'll let you know. Normally I would apologize for being this blunt but, lately things are lookin' so good. So have an uber-awesome day! —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Feliciapeacock (talkcontribs) 05:31, 8 April 2007 (UTC).

As Jersey Devil said above, articles are for subjects that meet the notability criteria, basically they need sources that are independant and published (like a newspaper or book). I apologise if you felt I treated you like you're 5, it wasn't intended. The message you got from me was a template, designed to be informative but not by any means belittling. I hope I haven't put you off Wikipedia and if you have any questions feel free to ask. Thanks, James086Talk | Email 05:36, 9 April 2007 (UTC)

FYI

You forgot to close the ref tag at Enzo Ferrari, leading to a rather drastic change in the article. I do that a lot, so I can't blame you, but I would suggest either previewing before or checking after saving your edits. Thanks. Λυδαcιτγ 23:04, 9 April 2007 (UTC)

Admin coach?

Saw your name on the list of coach volunteers. I am interested in adminship and wondered if a little pre RfA coaching might help. IvoShandor 13:40, 9 April 2007 (UTC)

Guess not. It's cool. I will query elsewhere.IvoShandor 10:23, 10 April 2007 (UTC)
Whoa! No, it's fine. I've been busy today and your message wasn't last on my talk page so I missed it. Sorry about that.
So what reasons would you like to become an admin? That way I can help fine tune specific areas. Nice to meet you by the way. James086Talk | Email 12:30, 10 April 2007 (UTC)
Well, since I work on GAs a lot I end up lurking around IFDs a lot and proposing them (not tons but I think that is where I would be most useful as an admin.) I also patrol my watchlist for vandalism, and have had some luck in the past with stopping it from happening on pages that were heavily targetted, such as Kane, Pennsylvania. These are the two areas I could help WP the most as an admin I would say. I am familiar with AfDs and could help out there as well, closing and such. I just would like to know more about these processes, how they work on the admin side of it, what do the admins really do when they close discussions? How do they decide whose supports/opposes to listen to when determining consensus. These things are what I am most curious about. Thanks. 12:31, 10 April 2007 (UTC)
Also, AIV and vandal blocks, these places would be great for me and be awesome respite from creating articles (which I also do a lot of but run into dry spells where I just poke around the wiki like a nomad). IvoShandor 12:42, 10 April 2007 (UTC)
My biggest worry about an RfA is an incident I had with a user a couple months ago involving a spammer, who I basically attacked on his talk page. We later made amends and the spammer realized his mistake, but I failed to assume good faith, and got very angry, and lashed out one nite after a couple drinks (which is not a common activity for me, so I kinda lost control that nite). I ended up giving the user a Purple barnstar and he accepted my apology, even offering to treat me to a video game at the arcade whose link he was trying to insert on DeKalb, Illinois. That incident taught me a lot about how not to deal with seemingly "bad" users. But I fear it will be held against me at RfA (which is why I have been, up to now, reluctant to try for it) despite all of my contributions to the project in all namespaces. What do you think? IvoShandor 12:46, 10 April 2007 (UTC)

When closing more difficult debates, like Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Stoopid Monkey (from today's list), it comes down to descretion. I would tend to keep that article based on DHowell's response and the references in the article. There's a process for what to do when closing a deletion debate which explains what to do but judging the result of a debate is sort of hard to explain. I tend to give comments with policies more weight, so if someone points out how article doesn't pass the notability criteria it makes their view more convincing. But that's just me. Make a user subpage and link some XfD debates that are due to end tomorrow and then note how you would close them. eg.

Though try to pick something a little harder ;)

Could you give me a link to your dispute? If it was sufficiently long ago and you have been civil since, then people shouldn't count it in an RfA (Jeez you reply fast). James086Talk | Email 12:54, 10 April 2007 (UTC)

Yeah I am high speed, low drag. I guess. I am on the Wiki and not doing anything really important so I just jump around a lot, saw the messages fast. : ) You should be able to see my attack (and I think this was in Feb) as far as I know I have been civil since, sometimes my tone might get a little condescending, but usually it just gets brushed off, and if I think I have offended someone with a hasty comment I will try to resolve it on their talk page once I realize I have been rash.

For the dispute (and my evil, horrible, mean spirited and unwarranted attack: see: User:JazzButcher, it should stil be up, not sure, didn't look, just remembered. Perhaps the DeKalb talk page as well. For an example of the other stuff see: This comment and this one: User_talk:IvoShandor/Archive_Apr_2007#Fair_use_exemption.

I think that is the only other time when I may have stepped out of line, but again both of these conflicts were resolved amiably. I used the eff word once at FPC, but I felt ganged up on, and didnt use it to refer to anyone, just the FP criteria, despite this I was accused of a personal attack, I just stayed away from there after that, mostly, save a comment or two on delisting noms.

The more I say the more this seems like a bad idea. But those are the three incidents which could be held against me. IvoShandor 13:04, 10 April 2007 (UTC)

Okay so the commnent wasn't up, here's the link, you can't miss it, promise, I may not have signed it, I wasn't sober that day and apparently thought I was an OG. : )IvoShandor 13:10, 10 April 2007 (UTC)

Those horrible things I said were in Feb. Before that, since early Sept 2006, i hadn't a single incident with anyone, had a few images deleted before I fully understood policy, but those are the only incidents in 7 months of editing, and I have edited a lot. IvoShandor 13:14, 10 April 2007 (UTC)
Ouch. That's going to come up in an RfA. I think most people would want you to wait 'til the end of May/early June to go for an RfA (3 months). I can see you are sorry but you might get shot down if you go for an RfA too soon. It's been about a month and a half of good editing with no disputes so that's good. All I can suggest with respect to that is keep up the good work since. Don't try to hide it in an RfA (that will be disasterous), link it and explain what happened. James086Talk | Email 13:25, 10 April 2007 (UTC)
I had no plans to hide it. I will wait til May or June then. Thanks for the help. And I will follow your advice about IfD's and watch them closely until then. IvoShandor 13:31, 10 April 2007 (UTC)
I knew it would be a problem, as I saw some RfAs having items brought up from as long ago as a year. Oh well, it's not that big of deal, adminship, I mean. Maybe I will just forget about and keep working on the project as I have been. IvoShandor 13:33, 10 April 2007 (UTC)
By June you should be fine. It will probably raise concerns but I think that you'll be alright. There's no rush and some people get opposed for being too eager to become admins. Don't give up if you do want to be an admin, it's not like becoming a bureaucrat (I'd hate to go through that process). You should be fine in a month or 2. If that's the only mishap on your record then given time it will blow over. James086Talk | Email 13:47, 10 April 2007 (UTC)
Well I appreciate your honesty, really I do. And I am in no big rush, just want to help the project, which I can do either way, I wonder, when I do get ready for an RfA, can I still acquire your assitance, maybe some more in depth guidance? IvoShandor 13:51, 10 April 2007 (UTC)
And OUCH was right. I hadn't read that comment since I apoligized and cleared things up, man that was harsh. Wow. IvoShandor 13:52, 10 April 2007 (UTC)
Any time, it might take a while for me to respond as with your original query, but sure. If you have a specific question ask away. I'll nominate you when you feel ready if you like, self-noms are generally less successful. James086Talk | Email 14:02, 10 April 2007 (UTC)
Cool. Thank you. I am generally pretty civil so it shouldn't be a problem remaining so. And I am sure by that time I will have some specific questions formulated as well. Thanks again James. IvoShandor 14:20, 10 April 2007 (UTC)

Hello

Hi how are you going? Remember me? I saw Maserati on the main page. Congratulations! Imoeng 00:31, 25 April 2007 (UTC)

Welcome back! Thanks, it's changed quite a bit since you reviewed it! diff. It's harder than I thought to maintain an article on the main page, a section was removed and it was buried in the history of the page before I could restore it. But it's great to see you back. James086Talk | Email 01:50, 25 April 2007 (UTC)
It's changed a lot, lol. Well it's been on and off for me, depends on the weather. Yeah maintaining articles on the main page is horrible, that why I often ask a question why don't "people" lock the article. See ya around. Imoeng 01:52, 25 April 2007 (UTC)
I'm sure you've heard it before; "Wikipedia the encyclopedia that anyone can edit". Hi James 086. I saw the Maserati MC12 and as is my wont had a flip through the edit history, FA identification etc. etc. All I can say is what a stunning job from you and the rest of the team who worked on it. I recently wrote an article that was deleted titled "Table Ball". I'm not suprised that it was deleted since it covered an inane topic. Shepshed edit

I was recently editing a page on Shepshed in Leicestershire. I added some details regarding sports teams in the area which were factually correct. I then moved the details regarding Shepshed's twin town to the main section of the page rather than the sport section where it is inappropriate.

I am presuming that an alert was garnered by the use of the word Butthole. Interestingly enough I strongly urge that you check the address of Shepshed Dynamo FC which you will find listed as Butthole Lane, Shepshed. As a local resident I can confirm this is the actual name of the street.

I am somewhat vexed by the fact that no message was given as to what part of my edit was either factually wrong or inappropriate and why it was therefore removed.

"Be respectful to others and their points of view. This means primarily: Do not simply revert changes in a dispute. When someone makes an edit you consider biased or inaccurate, improve the edit, rather than reverting it. Provide a good edit summary when making significant changes that other users might object to. The revision you would prefer will not be established by reverting, and repeated reverting is forbidden; discuss disputed changes on the talk page." Taken from the Wikipedia guideline on disputes. I'm afraid these guidelines do not appear to have been followed by James086 or SuicidalHamster.

This seems to make a mockery of Wikipedia being open to all since such moderation is wholly subjective with people who have no knowledge of a subject area making qualitative judgements. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Roterbaron (talkcontribs) 13:54, 12 May 2007 (UTC).

I gave you a message indicating that your edit to Shepshed was innappropriate but it appears I was wrong. I apologise for reverting the edit and the warning I issued you. The reason I didn't specifically say which part of the edit was innapropriate (but it turns out none of it was) is because it would take far too much time. Wikipedia receives lots of vandalism, and the only way we keep on top of it is by speeding up the removal process. I don't think there is a dispute at all, simply a mis-understanding. I hope I haven't detered you from continuing to contribute. Again, I apologise for reverting your edit to the article, I thought it was vandalism. James086Talk | Email 14:05, 12 May 2007 (UTC)

Would you mind giving this a closer view re spelling; I notice you did good work cleaning up before, and would appreciate another viewing from you. Thanks. Ceoil 21:54, 15 May 2007 (UTC)

Certainly, I have given it a quick spell check just now (see diff) but I have changed the spelling in a number of quotes. If they contained spelling errors in the actual quote please undo my change, use [sic] after something quoted with incorrect spelling to indicate to readers that you realise the spelling is incorrect but the quote would need to be changed otherwise; eg. "it was rianing[sic] cats and dogs". I'll give it another, more thorough look later today because I need to go now. This artice is really good. Should be ready for FAC soon. Good work, James086Talk | Email 00:02, 16 May 2007 (UTC)
James, thanks, although I'm a bit embarrassed at the number of errors you found...Ceoil 06:27, 16 May 2007 (UTC)
I put it through a spellchecker, so it's not quite right to say that I found them ;) I noticed that there is "centralised" in British spelling and "fiber board" which is American spelling; WP:ENGVAR says it should be consistent throughout. I'm not sure which units should be used in the final section for the dimensions of the painting so I added cm in brackets. Also I think it could use more internal links (Wikipedia:Build the web and Wikipedia:Manual of Style (links)). I'm rather pressed for time lately (I have exams coming up) so I can't really make long edits, but I can point things out. Sorry if I sound overly criticising, I don't mean to be, after all, it is a really good article. James086Talk | Email 14:36, 16 May 2007 (UTC)

Ah well

Don't sweat it, it isn't your fault that my fellow Wikipedians cannot look past what is right in front of them. For adminship not being such a big deal everyone there sure does act like it, all while reiterating what not a big deal it is, it's just a mop and a bucket but you can't have it because your not good enough. It's an odd contradiction that I am not quite sure I will ever grasp. Regardless, this will be my sole attempt at adminship, I have no interest in a future RfA. IvoShandor 06:04, 11 June 2007 (UTC)

Man, it's crap like this: Using the excuse of being incivil because you were drunk is just as good of an excuse as "I got in a car accident because I was drunk." At the top of Church of Scientology it says that some governments now regard them a religion, but some people also consider them a cult. I reverted the edit because I thought you were trying to insult the CoS. Although I do think of Scientology as a cult, I don't think it's appropriate to call them that in articles because articles should have a neutral point of view. Vandalism

Hello James. Thanks for the spell check :-) I'd like you to please keep visiting that same article entitled History of flexible wing hang gliding as there is an unregistered user that keeps deleting about 160 years worth of well documented hang gliding history. Thank you. BatteryIncluded 14:05, 25 July 2007 (UTC)

  • Thanks for the reply and advice James. If this vast deletion campaign continues, is there a way to limit editions to registered users only? Thanks for the information. BatteryIncluded 16:33, 25 July 2007 (UTC)

Carlisle Vandalisim

Hi, I hadn't realised that changing things on Wikipedia could be constued as Vandalism. I thought this was a site in which everyone had their right of freedom of speech.

Yes things are counted as vandalism, there's a policy (see Wikipedia:Vandalism). Something like this is counted as vandalism, the change you made was derogatory toward Carlisle and thus vandalism. I don't think you know what freedom of speech is, in the United States where their "4 freedoms" include freedom of speech, you can't shout "I have a bomb" on a plane. You will be arrested even though you don't have a bomb. Freedom of speech does not mean you can say anything. If you are looking for a place where you can say anything try getting a blog. Please do not add you personal opinions to articles, even if you feel they are true. If you want to add something to an article it should be sourced. Thanks, James086Talk | Email 13:43, 27 July 2007 (UTC)

Hi, James086, and thanks for your participation in my RfA. I've withdrawn it, and will be writing up an "analysis" of it, which will soon be available at User:Giggy/RfA/Giggy when it's done. At the risk of being premature, cheers for stepping in and settling things down. I was actually very slightly embarrassed at the mess he made to the WP:Auto project talk page. I'd only posted there as per the WP:DR recommendations to seek a wider audience, and didn't mean to drag the whole sorry escapade into such a public arena. Oh, well...

Also, while I'm here, should I remove the {{sockpuppet}} tag on my talk page, or wait until the Wikipedia:Requests for checkuser/IP check has been settled? I'm not sure of the WP protocol in this, and can't see any guideline after a quick look around. Not that it worries me -- I'm happy for it to sit there for a week or so until the dust has settled. Multiple IP users

Hi

I received a warnng for vandalizing a page - and I've never ever tried to post anything on wikipedia. Please disallow my ip number so that it cannot be used for that Thank you

Lewis

Hi Lewis, at Wikipedia we don't operate like that. Because there is the possibility that multiple people could share the same IP address, or the IP address could be reassigned to someone else, we don't block IP's for a long time unless we're sure that it's only one person getting blocked, or perhaps a school where a lot of vandalism comes from. Your IP address has obviously be either reassigned to you or you share it with others (both very common situations). For a more in depth explanation see the blocking policy. If we blocked IPs like that we would lose a lot of valuable contributers. If you receive a warning for vandalism and it doesn't apply then please disregard it, if your IP address is blocked it won't stop you reading Wikipedia, it only stops anyone with that IP editing. If you want to edit I suggest creating an account, although that is completely optional and you can edit without an account, it's just that there are some benefits. Thanks for your time, James086Talk | Email 23:48, 8 August 2007 (UTC)

Deletion of Propellerhead software

Hi there James086.

On 23rd August you deleted an article on Propellerhead Software, that I started and have worked very hard on recently. The reason you gave was:

Blatant advertising. Pages which exclusively promote some entity and which would need to be fundamentally rewritten to become encyclopedic. Note that simply having e.g. a company or product as its subject does not qualify an article for this criterion; an article that is blatant advertising should have inappropriate content as well.

I do not consider your deletion of this article fair. Firstly, I feel the article was well written and certainly within the style of wikipedia. Secondly, it clearly states that blatant advertising should have inappropriate content, which the Propellerhead Software article did not. I also do not work with or have any connection to Propellerhead Software, other than that I enjoy using their products.

I understand that in the past the article has been deleted for similar reasons. I did not see these articles and so cannot comment on their quality, but I feel that the article I started and was working on was coming along very well. Admittedly, the article did not have any references or sources, but I was working on these, as I used numerous sources to write the article in the first place.

I also understand that articles should not be recreated without the permission of an administrator. I apologise for this; I was unaware of this policy.

I do not feel this article should deleted because:

  • Propellerhead are a large, respected music software developer, with articles of their software already established on wikipedia Reason (software), ReBirth RB-338, ReCycle (program) which are also on sale at every major music technology retailer.
  • There are plenty of other articles on music software developers, and I feel most are poorer quality than the one I started. Steinberg, Ableton, Digidesign.
  • Reliable sources can be found, and I will cite them as soon as possible if given a chance. These include the Propellerhead website and Sound on Sound magazine.

I am requesting that the Propellerhead Software article is restored if possible, and I would like to be given a chance to improve it with reliable references and pictures.

I am not wanting to start an argument here and would appreciate it if you could give me advice on how to go about rectifying this problem. Hope to hear from you soon. --Mrtombullen 12:46, 23 August 2007 (UTC)

Thanks

Thanks for putting it back. I'm adding references from the company website and other reliable sources. I'm also trying to trim it down and make it more readable. Hopefully you'll find an interesting and well made article when you next have a look! Cheers --Mrtombullen 17:36, 23 August 2007 (UTC)

Hi James:

I have a concern and am asking for your advice.

A number of Wikipedians, including me, have worked to provide an unperfect but acceptable article for Sonny Dixon.

None of the authors added profanity or any kind of sensitive information to the article.

Sonny Dixon was a state legislator in Savannah, Georgia. He left politics and is now a local TV anchor.

Recently, a member called SonnyGator deleted the whole article leaving only a couple of sentences to describe Sonny Dixon's current employment.

I have a problem with that.

I suspect Mr. Dixon uses the name SonnyGator and deleted the article because he wants to downplay the importance of his political career, considering it to be a liability as a journalist.

When George W. Bush leaves the presidency, will he be allowed to clear up his entire Wikipedia biography and leave a couple of sentences describing himself as an average retiree with no particular interest in the political process?

I am not saying the past article had no room for improvement. I am just saying that it was a modest but valuable contribution to Wikipedia and should not have been just simply axed by the subject.

Please advise.

Regards,

WP:Automobiles banner

I've noticed your tagging of a lot of racing articles today to add a banner from WikiProject:Automobies. But I really have to ask, do racing teams and season results belong under that WikiProject? I can understand things like racing cars, but BOAC 500? Nordic Challenge Cup? I'm not sure if it's simply a problem with the bot you are using misidentifying articles. Anyway, I was just curious as to your reasoning. The359 10:44, 29 August 2007 (UTC)

You responded that this person had done nothing significant - please see recreated page - hardly insignificant - a significant part of Flying Hat band and Albion to say the least. I feel it is important to acknowledge and record his significant contributions - you only have to tap into any search engine to verify the details. I feel you were a wee bit hasty!

I am guessing

I am guessing there is no chance but I am seriously considering another charge at the rfa show. I am mostly civil, blunt sometimes but never even come close to what led to my downfall at RfA I. I think I may have a shot, any thoughts? IvoShandor 08:26, 31 August 2007 (UTC)

Either way, not a big deal. I was just wondering when you thought I might have a shot if I decided to pursue that route. What would be unnerving about the Black Hawk War comment? The fact that I care that much about accuracy? Perhaps, I shall stay away from RfA save to voice my opinion on those I have interacted with. IvoShandor 22:59, 31 August 2007 (UTC)
Yeah, I hear ya about RfA. Like I said I am not that very concerned about it, just trying to gauge where you thought I might stand, if I ever decide to go for admin again. Sometimes I think it would make things a lot easier and then others that it would just be more work. But I don't know if I really want to go through another stone-throwing session, err, RfA. : ) Thanks. IvoShandor 03:54, 1 September 2007 (UTC)

Wiki Noob

Hey, in response to what you posted on my talk page, I'm kinda new to wikipedia, well, I've been reading the articles for ages, but I haven't really been doing much to it, so I don't know most of the conventions of wikipedia. I basically only put those there to show people what well, for example, equipment was. I guess I personally won't be able to make one until the game is released.

I guess I won't be uploading pictures again. Should I remove the equipment picture? I dunno, the Wikipedia:Non-free content page is confusing so even if I could keep it, I wouldn't know what to put onto it. The Lord Of The Crayons 12:09, 4 September 2007 (UTC)

Hi James, sorry to bother you, but would you be able to restore the page move made by User:Ddgonzal to the Nissan article, which has been moved to Nissan Motor Co., Ltd.? Regards OSX (talkcontributions) 08:00, 13 September 2007 (UTC)

Also, is there some kind of way admins can undo multiple edits made by a user all at once? Because there are just way to many edits by User:Ddgonzal to revert, since he/she has changed the wikilinks on numerous Nissan-related articles from Nissan to Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. —Preceding unsigned comment added by OSX (talkcontribs) 08:07, 13 September 2007 (UTC)

Changing the article to "Nissan" would be OK with me. However, ddgonzal did not move the Nissan article (which is a redirect page), I moved the "Nissan Motors" article because the title is less than ideal, then tried to fix double-redirects. Consensus for rhe move was not a problem beforehand, no one disagreed until now. The proposal was made two months ago on the "Nissan Motors" talk page, and there were no objections.

I have not heard a single specific reason why the move was a bad idea. Instead you simply undid the change without even discussing it, which I find very disheartening. Aren't you supposed to discuss it first? --Ddgonzal 22:15, 13 September 2007 (UTC)

Redirect of Talk:GM S platform

Hello, this is a message from an automated bot. A tag has been placed on Talk:GM S platform, by another Wikipedia user, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. The tag claims that it should be speedily deleted because Talk:GM S platform is a redirect to a non-existent page (CSD R1).

To contest the tagging and request that administrators wait before possibly deleting Talk:GM S platform, please affix the template {{hangon}} to the page, and put a note on its talk page. About a deleted article.

Greetings,

Even if I'm not really completly familiar with Wikipedia, I'm wondering why you deleted the "Life's Decay" article. If it's because it "does not assert the importance or significance of the subject". Shouldn't all other bands of this kind should be deleted too ? I guess this would be more fair because Life's Decay is much more important comparing to other bands that were in the same musical categories. Or maybe I missunderstood something. Please let me know why and if there's chance this article get back online. I can modify it if needed. Waiting for your reply ! Thanks. 83.204.156.246 17:15, 8 November 2007 (UTC)

I deleted the article because it did not indicate why it was important. This could be indicated through a statistic like they have sold a gold single/album or (preferably) with sources independant to the band (like an interview in a magazine). I could restore the article into your userspace if you had an account (they're free and don't require any personal information; email is optional), where you could work on it. That way it wouldn't be deleted and when it's ready you can move it into the article space (where other people will see it). James086Talk | Email 09:37, 10 November 2007 (UTC)

Protection

Hi James, I'm getting ready to sign off for the night, but I noticed that you protected Pearl Harbor (film) with only 16 edits in the last 3 days. And it appears that just one editor was doing the bulk of the vandalism Special:Contributions/71.225.82.90. Don't you think that the protection is a little excessive? Would you mind unprotecting it for now, as there really doesn't seem to be a mass amount of vandalism, or sockpuppet attacks. Why block potential users from editing when it's really not that bad? Anyhow, happy editing. KnowledgeOfSelf | talk 02:37, 30 November 2007 (UTC)

Tom Engelhardt - temporary restore request

Hi James, Would you please temporarily restore the Tom Engelhardt page, which was speedy-deleted for copyvio? There were actually many sources used in that page, but I don't have a copy of what I wrote (nor the source links), and I just don't have time to go back through it all and start from scratch. As you wrote, the article does meet the "notability" requirements. I am 100% certain that Tom does not mind the sentences adapted from his website, but I will be sure to re-write the article such that it is not in violation of copyright.

Tom Engelhardt - please copy to my talk page

Hi James, I didn't see a reply to my earlier request, though I've been busy so my apologies if I just missed it. Would you please put a copy in my Talk page of the article Tom Engelhardt, which you speedy-deleted for copyvio? That way I can re-write the article to make sure there is no copyvio. There were actually many sources used in that page, but I don't have a copy of what I wrote (nor the source links), and I just don't have time to go back through it all and start from scratch. As you wrote, the article does meet the "notability" requirements. Franz Josef Strauß

I appreciate your taking on the matter of this dispute. I can't say that I'm happy about the resolution, but, as you may have noticed, I place a lot of stock in the appearance of fair play. Even though I wished for another outcome, at the very least I know that those on the other side of the fence have not been given cause to complain that they have been treated unfairly. If you had ruled differently, I'm sure the whole point of the discussion would have been even more deeply immersed in technicalities than it had already become. Merry Christmas, James. Wow. I got a barnstar out of all that? I'm genuinely grateful, yet feel awkward; I hope you'll understand if I hide it for a while, whilst my compadres and I finish licking our wounds. It just doesn't seem fair that I should get a reward after causing Erudy's proposal to lose. Unschool (talk) 06:11, 24 December 2007 (UTC)

Whereas I am extremely unhappy about the closure, on three grounds. Unschool asked for third opinions; he asked neutrally, and there is no evidence that he cherry-picked his editors - one of them was, IIRC, one of the small handful of opposes.

Secondly, and more importantly, there was a supermajority even without any of the editors Unschool contacted; his action merely converted it into a snowball. Please consider the state in which Unschool segregated the editors he had contacted, as noted here: that's 10-2 among editors he didn't contact, and several of the ones he did were regulars and would presumably have !voted anyway.

Perhaps most importantly, we had come to a discussion of the key point here: both sides had come close to admitting the evidence that Strauss's name is almost always spelled one way in German, and another way in English; we might even have gotten an answer why one side ignores the other's arguments. This therefore stood a chance, if it had been permitted to continue, of resolving the situation permanently by discussion. This used to be our practice; I am appalled to see it changed. your criteria

User:James086/recall Short and sweet! Nice. One nit I spotted, the (link) in the last bullet point seems to go to m:Requests_for_permissions_stand_down, a page that does not exist. Is that what you intended? If so, what should users do there? That may need some elaboration. Or perhaps it was just a typo? Thanks for making your criteria available for others to draw from. Happy editing. ++Lar: t/c 16:13, 29 December 2007 (UTC)
