Welcome!

Hello, Jam01, and welcome to Wikipedia! Thank you for your contributions. I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are a few good links for newcomers:

I hope you enjoy editing here and being a Wikipedian! Please sign your name on talk pages using four tildes (~~~~); this will automatically produce your name and the date. If you need help, check out Wikipedia:Where to ask a question, ask me on my talk page, or place {{helpme}} on your talk page and someone will show up shortly to answer your questions. Again, welcome!  Kukini 07:43, 20 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Bettas[edit]

Hi! I got your message about betta care and I'd love to give you some tips, but the wiki community generally discourages using talk pages for "non-wiki" discussion. Try reading through the "In the aquarium" section of Siamese Fighting Fish, I don't really do anything differently (though one tip: try feeding "freeze dried" live food, rather than pellets, bettas love it and it's really good for them!). Good luck with your betta! Pharaoh Hound 14:26, 13 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Ryan Catholic College article[edit]

Hi, I've removed the criticism section of the Ryan Catholic College which you added, since you have not listed any sources for it. We are not opposed to critical views on the subject of the article, but statements like these do need to be backed up by a reliable source. If you think this section should remain a part of the article, please provide a reliable source. Thanks! --JoanneB 20:55, 15 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

AA flight[edit]

That's right, bit by bit we keep building and before long we'll have an encyclopedia. :-P Keep up the good work! Johntex\talk 08:22, 21 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

PROD warning[edit]

I've added the "{{prod}}" template to the article American Airlines flight 1740, suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process. All contributions are appreciated, but I don't believe it satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and I've explained why in the deletion notice (see also Wikipedia:What Wikipedia is not and Wikipedia:Importance). Please either work to improve the article if the topic is worthy of inclusion in Wikipedia, or, if you disagree, discuss the issues raised at Talk:American Airlines flight 1740. If you remove the {{dated prod}} template, the article will not be deleted, but note that it may still be sent to Wikipedia:Articles for deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached. Batmanand | Talk 09:00, 21 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Ads[edit]

Not sure which post of mine you were referring to, but these days I'm more towards the no-add camp. If it's needed to maintain the roject, then ads-on for anon's is a bit of a compromise, but I'd like them to have a ad's-off cookie based option if we ever have to go down that route. — xaosflux Talk 01:58, 23 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, just found it! >6months agao, time flies. That project hasn't done a lot lately, and the current trend on the mailing lists is for continuation with no ads, if the fundraisers don't meet the goals though, we may have to reconsider. Happy editing! — xaosflux Talk 02:02, 23 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

RE:Wow![edit]

Hello! I hope you are feeling fine. I would just like to reiterate some points which you have made to me. Firstly, whenever I vote for articles to be kept or deleted in AfD pages, I would generally support for the inclusion of the particular article. But sadly, this is not always possible because of notability issues. I tried to vote keep for most articles and this had cost me some votes in my first RfA because of this. Secondly, in my second RfA, the community felt that I lack basic understanding of some of the policies of Wikipedia. I accepted this judgement and decided to continue making quality edits to this project. However, I do not think that I would be running for another RfA soon because of the recent fiasco (which was unintentional) which I had done! I accidently voted twice for some RfAs and in my opinion, this is totally unbecoming of a future admin. Frankly speaking, I am really embarrassed about this catastrophic mistake. If I run for admin again, I am sure many users would oppose my adminship because of this.

As for my ideals of this project, I am ever committed in realizing this goal of containg ALL human knowledge in Wikipedia. I strongly believe that in the near future, the issue of notablility would not be a main factor in creating articles about stars, galaxies, people, etc. Good luck to you and I wish to thank you for your kind remarks. --Siva1979Talk to me 05:33, 23 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Your articles on Italian greetings[edit]

I'm afraid that Wikipedia is not a dictionary, so please do not create articles on words and phrases that only state their meaning. (By the way, 'goodbye' is spelt 'arrivederci' in Italian.) :) - ulayiti (talk) 01:38, 24 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I'm sorry if I seemed a bit rude, it wasn't my intention. Let me offer you a warm welcome to Wikipedia on my behalf as well, and hope you like the place enough to stay. :) - ulayiti (talk) 11:57, 24 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

AFD on American Airlines flight 1740[edit]

I have started an AfD listing at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/American Airlines flight 1740. You contributed heavily to the article, so I thought it only fair to inform you and welcome you to participate in the debate. Batmanand | Talk 10:12, 6 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Welcome to Esperanza![edit]

Welcome, Jam01, to Esperanza! As you might know, all the Esperanzians share one important goal: the success of this encyclopedia. Within that, we then attempt to strengthen the community bonds, and be the "approachable" side of the project. All of our ideals are held in the Charter, the governing document of the association.

Now that you are a member you should read the guide to what to do now or you may be interested in some of our programs. A quite important program is Stressbusters, which seeks to support editors who have encountered any stress from their Wikipedia events, and are seeking to leave the project. So far, Esperanza can be credited with the support and retention of several users. We will send you newsletters to keep you up to date. Also, we have a calendar of special events, member birthdays, and other holidays that you can add to and follow.

In addition to these projects, several more missions of Esperanza are in development, and are currently being created at Esperanza/Proposals.

If you have any other questions, concerns, comments, or general ideas, Esperanzian or otherwise, know that you can always contact Natalya by email or talk page. Consider introducing yourself at the Esperanza talk page! Alternatively, you could communicate with fellow users via our IRC channel, #wikipedia-esperanza (which is also good for a fun chat or two :). If you're new to IRC, you may find help at an IRC tutorial. I thank you for joining Esperanza, and look forward to working with you in making Wikipedia a better place to work!

September Esperanza Newsletter[edit]

Program Feature: Barnstar Brigade
Here in Wikipedia there are hundreds of wikipedians whose work and efforts go unappreciated. One occasionally comes across editors who have thousands of good edits, but because they may not get around as much as others, their contributions and hard work often go unnoticed. As Esperanzians we can help to make people feel appreciated, be it by some kind words or the awarding of a Barnstar. This is where the Barnstar Brigade comes in. The object of this program is to seek out the people which deserve a Barnstar, and help them feel appreciated. With your help, we can recognize more dedicated editors!
What's New?
September elections are upon us! Anyone wishing to be a part of the Advisory Council may list themselves as a candidate from 18 September until 24 September, with the voting taking place from 25 September to 30 September. Those who wish to help with the election staff should also list themselves!
Appreciation Week, a program currently in development, now has its own subpage! Share your good ideas on how to make it awesome there!
The Esperanza front page has been redesigned! Many thanks to all who worked hard on it.
Many thanks to MiszaBot, courtesy of Misza13, for delivering the newsletter.
  1. The proposals page has been updated, with some proposals being archived.
  2. Since the program in development Appretiaion week is getting lots of good ideas, it now has its own subpage.
  3. The September 2006 Council elections will open for nominations on 18 September 2006. The voting will run from 25 September 2006 until 30 September 2006. If you wish to be a candidate or a member of the elections staff, please list yourself!
  4. The new Esperanza front page design has but put up - many thanks to all who worked on it!
  5. TangoTango has written a script for a bot that will list new members of Esperanza, which will help those who welcome new Esperanzains greatly!

All right! Blue or green... light? Dark? Combination? silver& blue? Is there a theme I should follow (Esperanza, a sport, a time period, etc; like mine, which is based on an Egyptian theme)? Are there any pictures you would like included?
Should I just make up a few different ones and you can pick? — Editor at Large(speak) 11:59, 11 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
No problem! If it was too much work I wouldn't have volunteered to do it ;) Do you mind if I go ahead and make the necessary subpages under your name? I can make them under mine until I'm done of you'd rather. — Editor at Large(speak) 09:04, 12 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Userpage redesign[edit]

I have the basic layout done. Check it out and let me know what you think! If you have colour suggestions, additional information, or anything else, write it on my sandbox's talk page. You can go ahead and make the changes yourself, too, if you'd prefer. Cheers!— Editor at Large(speak) 04:54, 20 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

No prob. It was my pleasure! As for web-safe fonts:
  • Sans-serif
    • Arial, Arial Black, Arial Narrow, Helvetica, Gill Sans, Lucida, sans-serif, Trebuchet, Verdana
  • serif: normal fonts with serifs
    • Times, Times New Roman, Palatino, Bookman, New Century Schoolbook
  • monospace: fixed-width fonts
    • Andale Mono, Courier New, Courier, Lucidatypewriter, Georgia, monospace
  • cursive: fonts that emulate handwriting
    • Comic Sans MS, Zapf Chancery, Coronetscript, Florence, Parkavenue, cursive
  • fantasy: decorative fonts
    • Impact, Arnoldboecklin, Oldtown, Blippo, Brushstroke, fantasy
These were found on a list somewhere, and I can't speak for its correctness. I believe it's pretty much right. And let me know if there are any colour changes you'd like: the blue, black & white was just my simple solution. I can make another version in green if you'd prefer (an Esperanza theme).— Editor at Large(speak) 03:53, 21 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Did you want to go ahead and transfer the design to your page? You can change the font yourself if you'd like (just remember that the font on the titles for the expandable navframes will need to be changed on their pages, as they're templates to keep the page smaller). — Editor at Large(speak) 03:48, 23 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Absolutely! I put three colour options in my sandbox. Let me know if you like any of them... you can go here or here to see if you can find any colours you'd prefer. Let me know! — Editor at Large(speak) 04:13, 23 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Hmm... I added your choice, but I'm not sure if it's what you were thinking of. Colours tend to look different in large quantities than small samples would suggest, which may be the case here! — Editor at Large(speak) 04:37, 23 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Hello again! Yes, headache indeed. I changed it to three other shades of green: I tried the darker one you suggested, but trust me, it looked bad. Dark colours (unless they're really dark) generally don't turn up that well, and you have to change the font colour throughout. Trust me, what I went through to get my userpage was not fun. I'm not saying you can't do it, but it's not just the normal text you have to change: you have to go through and change the link colours, as well. That shade of blue doesn't turn up that well against darkish colours. Anyway, let me know if you like those few; there are some others I can try if you don't see one you like yet. — Editor at Large(speak) 05:33, 23 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Not a problem! If you want a picture for your page to fill in the space beside your info, just give me the name of it and I'll add it in (look at my page to see what I mean). And if there was any info you added after I copied it or info I missed, just point it out and I'll add it in. Cheers! — Editor at Large(speak) 06:12, 23 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

November Esperanza Newsletter[edit]

Program Feature: Admin Coaching (needs coaches!)
Admin Coaching needs coaches!!! If you are an administrator, or even a generally experienced user, do consider signing up to be a coach.

Admin Coaching, now being coordinated by HighwayCello, is a program for people who want help learning some of the more subtle aspects of Wikipedia policy and culture. People are matched with experienced users who are willing to offer coaching. The program is designed for people who have figured out the basics of editing articles; they're not newcomers any more, but they might want some help in learning new roles. In this way, Esperanza would help keep hope alive for Wikipedia because we would always be grooming the next generation of admins.

What's New?
The Tutorial Drive is a new Esperanza program! In an effort to make complicated processes on Wikipedia easier for everyone, Esperanza working to create and compile a list of tutorials about processes here on Wikipedia. Consider writing one!
A discussion on how Esperanza relates to the encyclopedia has been started; please add your thoughts.
Many thanks to MiszaBot, courtesy of Misza13, for delivering the newsletter.
  • The list of proposed programs has been updated, with some proposals being archived.
  • There is now a new program: the Tutorial Drive! Consider writing a tutorial on something you are good at doing on Wikipedia.
  • The suggestion of adding a cohesive look to all the Esperanza pages is being considered; join the discussion if you are interested!
  • In order to make a useful interlanguage welcome template, those involved in translation projects will be asked what English Wikipedia policies are most important and confusing to editors coming from other language Wikipedias.
  • A discussion of Esperanza's role in Wikipedia is being held, with all thoughts of all Esperanzians wanted!
  • Shreshth91 informed everyone that he will be leaving the Esperanza council as life is rather busy; his spot will be filled by the runner up from the last election, HighwayCello.

Article about Wikipedia Users[edit]

I am a freelance writer working on an article about the wide array of people who make Wikipedia their life, their passion, their pastime. Wikipedia “addicts” if you will. I’m looking for people just willing to tell their story of how they got sucked into the intellectual whirlwind that is Wikipedia; how you got started editing, how the obsession grew, and what you spend your time focusing on these days? Do you write articles from scratch? Is your main push toward one particular type of article? Do you patrol for typos and errors, or spend your time diligently fixing vandalism? Do you take part in the “social aspects” of Wikipedia; engaging in animated discussions or decorating your user page with all sorts of internet memes? Have you ever forced yourself to take a “Wikipedia break”? If so, what’s your 20/20 hindsight on the obsession? Basically I’m just trying to get an idea of what it’s like for various Wikipedia “addicts.” I am especially interested in speaking to you about your thoughts on Esperanza and the Esperanza Barnstar Brigade. If you are interested in participating, please email me at [email protected]68.39.158.205 03:16, 11 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I can't say thank you enough for the support that you have shown me over the past few days. It means the world to me, and has certainly helped me along the road to recovery! I will cherish forever the kind messages and "gifts" that were sent to me and think of them whenever times are rough.

I didn't realise that my absence would cause so much concern, and I apologise if I caused anyone undue stress. I feel that I owe you an explanation, at least! for what happened, to return in some small way the kindness you showed to me. I will post it here as soon as possible, if you would like to know the reason for my brief departure and the links on my userpage.

Thank you for the Support

I'd like to express my huge thanks to you, Jam01, for your support in my recent RfA, which closed with 100% support at 71/0/1. Needless to say, I am very suprised at the huge levels of support I've seen on my RfA, and at the fact that I only had give three answers, unlike many other nominees who have had many, many more questions! I'll be careful with my use of the tools, and invite you to tell me off if I do something wrong! Thanks, Martinp23 14:45, 18 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

A vote of thanks from Terence Ong[edit]

That birthday wishes made my day this weekend. I celebrated my birthday today instead of yesterday since I still had school, unfortunately. Thanks for the birthday wishes, and I greatly appreciate it. --Terence Ong (C | R) 14:50, 18 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your support![edit]

A week ago I nominated myself, hoping to be able to help Wikipedia as an administrator as much as a WikiGnome. I am very glad many others shared my thoughts, including you. Thank you for your trust! Be sure I will use these tools to protect and prevent and not to harass or punish. Should you feel I am overreacting, pat me so that I can correct myself. Thanks again! Thanks for the Barnstar![edit]

Thanks a lot for the barnstar. It's good to know that there are people out there who support me. You're a great person, and I noticed you're giving out a lot. Good job! Thanks again. DoomsDay349 16:41, 19 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks :)[edit]

Thanks for you kind words on my talk page. I'm always a little pleasantly surprised when people respond to other editor's messages on my talk page, especially when it's people I don't know very well. It always makes me wonder what brought them to my page. :) Cheers! – ClockworkSoul 07:09, 20 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your support at RFA[edit]

I wasn't going to send thank-you cards, but the emotional impact of hitting WP:100 (and doing so unanimously!) changed my mind. So I appreciate your confidence in me, and hope you'll let me know if I can do anything for you in the future. Cheers! -- nae'blis 22:42, 28 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Concordia Newsletter[edit]

NEWSLETTER

Concordia is currently trying to relaunch. I, and all the members of the ex-council, wish to welcome new members to the group. We are a group who aim to promote remaining civil, in an environment where messages can easily be interpretated wrongly.

Help out now![edit]

  • Try and help people remain civil! Talk to them, and help them in any way possible. Do not be afraid to use the talk page.
  • Give people the Civility Barnstar.
  • Make and spread some Wikitokens so people know there are people to help if they want assistance.
  • Add banners or logos to your userpage to show your support.
  • Suggest some ideas! Add 'em to the talk page.

We are a community, so can only work though community contributions and support. It's the helping that counts.

Decision Making[edit]

The council expired one month ago, but due to the current position of the group the current council will remain until the position of the group can be assessed, and whether it would be sensible to keep Concordia going. For most decisions, however, it will be decided by all who choose to partake in discussions. I am trying to relaunch because of the vast amounts of new members we have received, demonstrating that the aims are supported.

If you wish to opt of of further talk-page communications, just let us know here.

Fair use rationale for Image:MashedCover.jpg[edit]

Thanks for uploading or contributing to Image:MashedCover.jpg. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use. Suggestions on how to do so can be found here.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Seraphim Whipp 15:02, 8 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Orphaned non-free media (Image:MOPy1J.JPG)[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:MOPy1J.JPG. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BJBot (talk) 05:07, 12 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

File:DSCN0255.jpg listed for deletion[edit]

An image or media file that you uploaded or altered, File:DSCN0255.jpg, has been listed at Wikipedia:Images and media for deletion. Please see the discussion to see why this is (you may have to search for the title of the image to find its entry), if you are interested in it not being deleted. Thank you. —Bkell (talk) 16:49, 9 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Fair use rationale for File:CotN Basket.JPG[edit]

Thanks for uploading or contributing to File:CotN Basket.JPG. I notice the file page specifies that the file is being used under fair use but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia constitutes fair use. Please go to the file description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page.
