Political cult article

John, if you go to the article's discussion page you will see two postings in which I discussed in detail why I think this material doesn't belong in the article. Essentially, the material by BabyDweezil that I deleted points out that two ex-members of Marxist political cults wrote about their experiences, and a third was co-author of a book that described his own organization among about ten others. This doesn't rise to the level of any significance, since there are a greatly larger number of cult experts, scholars and journalists who accept and use the concept of political cults who were never members of Marxist parties, cultlike or otherwise; for instance, Robert Jay Lifton and Chip Berlet. But even if BabyD could provide a larger list of individuals the "facts" she cites would still be unworthy of inclusion here because he/she fails to cite any published expert statement that reflects his/her interpretation of the facts. As it stands, his/her material is (a) an inference from insufficient data; (b) original research; and {c} argumentum ad hominem. If you have any further questions, feel free to communicate them to me. Please argue your change, deleting the ref to 3-shires heads, on talk page. I think it's very relevant, given the the general remoteness of the area and the fact that the head is presumably in 3 police jurisdictions, making escape (from a treasonable offence)more likely. Sorry. It was me who put in the references. The reason was that there was a notice recently attached that said that there were unreferenced or uncited commenst made in the article. If I can quote from WP:V: The threshold for inclusion in Wikipedia is verifiability, not truth. "Verifiable" in this context means that any reader should be able to check that material added to Wikipedia has already been published by a reliable source. Editors should provide a reliable source for material that is challenged or likely to be challenged, or it may be removed. I merely changed a few things in the article (about it being a civil parish, and it holding a parish meeting rather than it having a parish council), and then supplied two citations for the two claims I could easily track down at that time. I did it according to the advice given in WP:CITE. I agree that it looks ugly in its unrendered form. But ordinary readers will not see that - they will see the nicely rendered article without any of the formatting, etc stuff that we, as editors, have to know about and use. The hard rule is that if material can't be verified, using recognised sources of information (WP:V can help with this), then one should seriously doubt whether that material should be included at any stage of the article's development. Hi JF. The stubs and categories aren't as arcane as they might appear. The full list of stubs is here, but if you are usually working within a set area you soon get used to knowing which one to use. The template is added using {{insert stub name here}} If you are unsure of a category, look at articles similar to the one you are working on, and see which categories they fall into. Did you know you can (both) request that your user pages be semi-protected? I did that yesterday after numerous incidents when anonymous users kept on replacing my user page with one million digits of pi and other such rubbish. Youneed to go to WP:RFPP and folloow the instructions (you need to add something like {{lu|Put-your-id-here-without-square-brackets}}. It was done quite quickly, and all I had to do was point out the problem in order to get it agreed. It may be worth a go for you both (I've duplicated this message on Billlion's talk page aswell. Protecting one's talk page from vandalism is a bit more difficult and causes a few more problems.  DDStretch  (talk) 17:30, 3 February 2007 (UTC)

Mentoring

I'm delighted that you've agreed to mentoring. I honestly believe that's the best path to success on Wikipedia, and that it will help you rebuild the confidence of those who will be dealing with you. I intend to require that you treat others with dignity and will - to the very best of my ability - require the same of others who interact with you, including myself. If the feedback is wrong or you believe it would lessen the quality of the edit, you certainly have the discretion to (politely) argue your case. But if it looks like the situation is coming to an impasse, please let me know and I'll intervene (or ask someone else to, if the situation is between the two of us) to bring it to a close. Miami

Your edit to Miami created an enormous error in the demographics section, and I have corrected it. I am assuming that you are not familiar with the criteria used for the Census Bureau for counting, and it was a good-faith effort, but it was quite wrong. In a city in which 59.5% of the city is foreign-born, and of those 96.4% are from Latin America, identifying 0.02% of the population as Hispanic is way off the mark. this table from the Census Bureau indicates that 66.6 percent of the city's residents speak Spanish as a first language, and 47.1% (of all residents) speak Spanish as a first language, and English "less than very well". It appears that you were trying to make the demographic figures add up to 100%, which doesn't work. The question asking if a person is Hispanic is an additional question (in other words, all the Hispanic people belong to another racial group first, then identify as Hispanic as well). It makes dealing with demographics so much fun, and it's all politicized to boot. I don't know if you've changed any others (Miami is on my watchlist, which is why I caught it), but you ought to go back and change any others you've adjusted.
