Hezza, Gazza and now Zza nicknames

You seem to think I am the enemy here. I am really an inclusionist. I do not like deleting articles and much prefer to keep articles. As a result, I will leave your latest effort alone, but I do point out that what you have done by creating a new article, just before one is deleted with the same material, is against the policies of WP. If I understand matters correctly, and I may not, any Admin who comes across your new article can speedy delete it as being the same as an article that has been deleted. The new article still has all the old problems. There is no real name for the thing you are talking about, and how do readers get there? At least put a link on all articles that are linked from the article, including the one on the Prince of Wales and Macca. This of course will draw the attention of more people to your article and they may, like me, think it is unencyclopedic. You have to risk that. --Bduke 08:51, 28 May 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for your comments. I was unaware that I was breaking any rules. You had invited improvement and so I sought to provide this. I did say what I was doing though maybe you missed by previous note unedr the old heading. I regret any brecah of convention. There are plenty of links already, though I recognise your point. I doubt this article is any "worse" than nicknames and is arguably more "focused". I genuinely don't think this is "unencylopaedic" and some others have that opinion too. How else are such articles presented in the many tomes that report popular language? Grateful for your forebearance and indeed for your help at an earlier stage. Anyway it's the first dry day we've had here for some time - and there's the Monaco Grand Prix - so I'll leave it there. --IXIA 09:28, 28 May 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for your reply. The reason for the linking is that users set their preferred date format, and linking makes the date show up in their browsers according to their preferences, regardless of how it's written in the code. For example:

[[26 March]] [[2005]] = 26 March 2005

[[March 26]] [[2005]] = March 26 2005

[[2005]] [[March 26]] = 2005 March 26

When I first saw "It girl" it seemed wrong, and when I followed the link to the Wikipedia article it confirmed that the normal modern usage is reserved for Hollywood starlets and the like. I've jusy been doing some minor work on this article, and I found a sentence that you added recently, starting: "His major in the years leading up to the war was the singer Vera (later Dame Vera) Lynn (b. 1917)". Hello, I'm just wondering whether this might be better being slightly compressed and merged into Captain Mainwaring's article? I think with hindsight maybe the wikiproject went a bit overboard creating too many unmanagable character articles, when it should have really been about getting the main Dad's Army page to a decent standard. Hi IXIA. Obviously you're right, I'm not old enough to remember Samantha Juste on TOTP (or anything else for that matter) but I'm not convinced she got her name from the character in Bewitched, especially since that series didn't start until 1964 by which time, I think, she had already chosen the name. The problem is simply that for living people, we can only rarely justify using non-free images to illustrate them, since a free image could reasonably be created. That means that the image is what we call "replaceable". In this instance, both I (the tagger) and another admin (the deleter) felt that the image was clearly replaceable by a free image. Well, I'm pretty familiar, having written this book [1]. I find the menstural blood argument odd, since anyone as familiar with the Bible as Ruskin was would be very well aware of the concept of menstrual cycles. We also know he consulted a medical expert and that there was a medical statement concerning Effie's lack of deformities, which suggests to me that something about the shape of her body was the issue rather than its fluids. Usborne on Wodehouse

Hi. It seems that you are quite knowledgeable in this area. Might I ask a question?
I have started reading some Wodehouse again after a gap of maybe 20 years.
I recall that there is a book by Usborne where he gives his personal opinions about which books are better and worse. I believe it is from that book that I know that Something Fresh is a good one.
Do you recall which Usborne book I am thinking of?

Hertfordshire, eh? My grandfather was from a tiny place called Guiting Power in the Cotswolds which is now trendy, gentrified, and too expensive for Canadian professionals to visit. Ridiculous.

They are even worse than the Québécois over here.

Neither of those books is ringing a bell for me.

I am thinking of a paperback (Penguin?), not long, oversize?, yellow(ish) cover. He looks at Mulliner -- which ones are good. Uncle Fred -- what's good. Golf, what's good.

My favourite used bookshop here recently received a shipment of remaindered US hardcovers.

Everything with "Jeeves" in the title went quickly.

But not Mating Season, which I've read before, because of its Jeeves-less title.

Another shopper was aware of Psmith.

I recalled that Uncle Fred in the Springtime has a high standing, but there are many other books still sitting there.

I do not especially trust online voting and such things, since I have no way to gauge how the tastes of semi-anonymous females compares to my taste.
