Aberdyfi

Hi,

Can I seek your opinion on the correct spelling of Aberdyfi?

The National Assembly document http://new.wales.gov.uk/topics/localgovernment/localauthorities/gwyneddcouncil/?lang=en)]] gives Aberdyfi as does the BBC site http://www.bbc.co.uk/wales/northwest/sites/aberdyfi/

However User:Owain cites the Gwynedd Council document http://www.gwynedd.gov.uk/gwy_doc.asp?cat=3371&doc=9209&Language=1 as a reason to revert all changes to Aberdovey (despite the article title!!!)

I'm quite surprised at this because he spends much of his time deleting any reference to Gwynedd, Conwy, etc., as part of his anti-Welsh language campaign. -- Maelor  14:52, 25 August 2006 (UTC)

Volunteers on the Ffestiniog

Many thanks for your kind words, and I must admit I hadn't thought of it, but you are quite right we do need a section on volunteering. Perhaps illustrating some of the many different ways in which volunteers have helped and can help the FR. We probably need to have FR mag references (not a problem) but we ought not to name names unless they are dead. I would like to exchange thoughts with you further on this. Nant Gwynant

Hi Hogyn Lleol, sounds like you are a Welsh speaker, are you able to assist in the discussion of Nant Gwynant, I've asked the question that Nant is a small river, brook and doesn't mean Valley. The Nant Gwynant is just a small stretch of river with two lakes, the Llyn Gwynant and Llyn Dinas. The OS map doesn't shed any light on this, but I would have though strictly speaking that Dyffryn Gwynant would have been correct. Unless that is that Nant Gwynant has come to mean, as a sound, the Gwynant valley. Cheers (Gowron 18:05, 11 November 2006 (UTC))

Doh. Dylwn i wedi sylweddoli hynny... I don't think that the correct plural of cell is so important though. There's a lot of extension of -au locally: as in mynydde for mynyddoedd. Still, I don't think cell has much going for it here anyway. garik 11:32, 19 December 2006 (UTC)

Moving pages

Just a word of advice: pages can be moved from one title to another using the "move" button (between "history" and "watch" up top). This is preferred over simplying copying the contents to a new article for licensing reasons — it is necessary to keep the authorship information (i.e. page history) with the article. --Stemonitis 12:59, 20 December 2006 (UTC)

Porthmadog Harbour railway station‎

Thanks for sorting out this - it is one of my bug-bears that pictures get added and white space gets left. I would agree with you regarding removing the gallery - but only until the number of pictures increases. Rhyd Ddu got like that when the fourth picture was added. Then the gallery was created. Some assistance if possible

We have chatted in the past abouta few articles Dragonslayer and Dyffryn Mymbyr, I wonder if you could cast your Welsh eye over the Pen-y-Gwryd article. By the time you get there I'm sure it will have been changed again. There is quite a bit of discussion, on which I have tried to put forward the Welsh meaning, what the name actually refers, current and old OS maps information, local view and given a few examples other Welsha names that have been..... well diverted into other meanings. Plas-y-Brenin

Syt Da Chi. Dioch yn fawr for the fixes on the photos. I had thought of using the (gallery) tag, but ran into problems and so used an initial cludege, but as you've seen there are still minor tweaks to make the pictures look or work. There's more pictures to come, which should make the botom of the page straighten up as well. These will be of the current centre, which should hopefully enable the article to come to, at least for now until other people add their stuff, a start/middle/end.

Have not had a chance do do more on the Pen-y-Gwryd stuff, but like you I obtained the Car & Lister book, its a gem!. The whole book is just a great read of another time.

Also I took quite a few photographs of key scenes (no actors in shot) taken during the making of Dragonslayer, do you think they could be a useful addition?(Gowron 09:27, 15 February 2007 (UTC))

Pen-y-Pass Photo

The top pic was put there by me, the lower one by Noel, according to the detail on it. But both seem to be loading fine ....
Could have been a server problem as they are loading correctly today. As a test yesterday (as the page was taking ages to download) I tried a drag and drop to the desktop and the result was a corrupt file? Anway the problem has gone away. Cowlyd and Eigiau Tramway

Okay, I think there is some confusion here, over an admittedly confusing situation. As far as I can tell there are at least five different tramways involved:

  1. The Cedryn Quarry Tramway (article: Eigiau Tramway) which ran from Porth Llwyd to the Cedryn slate quarry 1861-1888
  2. The Eigiau Quarry Tramway (no article but should be covered in Eigiau Tramway?) which extended the Cedryn tramway to the Eigiau slate quarry 1863-1888
  3. The Wharf Tramway (no article) connecting the Aluminium Corporation works at Dolgarrog with the Conwy 1911-1912
  4. The Eigiau Reservoir Tramway (currently in Cowlyd Tramway, article should be renamed to Eigiau Reservoir Tramway?) substantially following the route of the Eigiau Quarry Tramway, standard gauge, 1911?-1925?
  5. The Colwyd Reservoir Tramway (currently in the Llyn Cowlyd article, should be in a separate article called Cowlyd Reservoir Tramway?) used for construction of the Cowlyd Reservoir, connecting the reservoir with the works at Dolgarrog. Used part of the trackbed of the converted Eigiau Reservoir Tramway. 1916-1968/1975/1980 (depending on source)

The names, with the exception of the Eigiau Reservoir Tramway are taken from Boyd, though how official they are is unknown. As far as I can tell we should deal with each of these in separate articles, properly cross-linked to the appropriate reservoir articles.

Is this a fair summary, or is there more to this story. In particular I'm not yet clear whether the Eigiau Reservoir Tramway was standard gauge for its whole existence and exactly where it ran. It doesn't seem to be congruent with the Eigiau Quarry Tramway. We really need a map for the area to help relate the various tramways. Gwernol 12:13, 26 March 2007 (UTC)


Yes, it is complicated. And it doesn't help that the Eigiau Reservoir Tramway is generally referred to simply as the "Eigiau Tramway", and the Cowlyd Reservoir Tramway as simply the "Cowlyd Tramway". Sources are few, notably Boyd, who is not altogether clear at times.

I don't believe the Cowlyd tramway used any part of the ET (other than the shared "loco shed" stretch at the top of the Dolgarrog incline) - it was a branch line off it. Yes, I agree a map would be extremely useful! I'd be tempted to name the articles "Eigiau Tramway" & "Cowlyd Tramway", with reference to the fact that the former used the line of the former tramway (up to the dam), but was widened to standard gauge, which was (definitely) later reduced to narrow gauge, I believe when the CT was built. There's actually quite a lot of detail on the Llyn Cowlyd page, and I'll readily admit that most of the Wiki content of the 2 tramways is the result of my investigations - the line of both tramways (in their final forms) is easily identified and walked on the ground, and it kind of all becomes clearer when you do! Hi Hogyn Lleol, I don't know if you're still following the endless argument about Carnedd Llywelyn (or "Carnedd Llewelyn") but I see you've contibuted to it in favour of the Welsh spelling. There's only one strong objector. Here's what I've just written at the bottom of the page to try and get this finished with once and for all:

Hello again Hogyn Lleol. Can you have a look at the latest deletions by ras52, I put in other citations and references yesterday and they have been unilaterally deleted by the above user, I have not reverted the deletions as its probably best to get some idea if there is any support for citing the RGS and other such bodies, and other books, i.e. "Gerald of Wales" in 1198. It took quite a while trawling through the libraries to locate them, but they got deleted in justa few minutes. Admitedly they are not perfect, but I didn't deserve that treatment. Diolch yn fawr. Hi there. I've noticed that you have placed several photograph request templates on actual articles, however, the request template should be placed on the talk page. I have removed these templates from the Loose Women articles and put them correctly on the talk page, but if you can think of anymore you have added to articles you should remove them. River Wye, Derbyshire

I think you made a slight error in the length of the river. I corrected it to 15 miles, which I will later add to by putting in the km conversion (I think it is 24 km). I've also added a ref to back up the length. I hope that helps.  DDStretch  (talk) 18:14, 29 August 2007 (UTC)

Images missing sources

Hi, I uploaded a few of your photos to commons a while back (commons:Image:Afon Llugwy from Pont-y-pair.jpg and commons:Image:Betws church.jpg), but I noticed that they state different authors. Do you happen to know where you got these photos, because they're technically missing source. -mattbuck (Talk) 11:22, 22 July 2008 (UTC)

Yes, they came from Geograph.org.uk. The author is stated (not me), and pics on this site are "licensed for reuse under this Creative Commons Licence."
