An additional welcome[edit]

Thank you for expressing curiosity about the Featured Article process. To elaborate on the (sometimes angry) answers you received, expressing your opinion does not have "working on important articles" as a prerequisite. The editors on Talk:Main Page were simply following the common attitude that "it is better to light a candle than curse the darkness."

In other words, if you feel that the choice of today's Featured Article seemed trivial or inappropriate, the simplest way to avoid this situation in the future is to help get more deserving articles up to Featured status.

A few recommendations I would offer, just to give you some ideas: check the articles about your state, province, district, or region to see how they can be improved. If these articles haven't already reached Featured status, there will probably be a "to-do" list on the article's Talk page suggesting ways to bring it closer to this achievement. If you have a specific field or specialty in which you are working or studying at university, articles related to it might need improvement by someone with your skills and knowledge.

Submitting an article for various types of reviews (Good Article, Featured Article, and so on) is a good way to get feedback on an article's strengths and weaknesses. Getting an article to Featured status is a long road that requires much patience and hard work, but other editors will help you if you need it. Oh lighten up. 'Stupidity' was a perfectly fine description.

CSD tagging is not a joke; 'lightening up' is not a requirement. The point wasn't that it was stupid, the point is that articles are only meant to be tagged and deleted in that fashion if they fall under a particular set of criteria; go to WP:CSD and tell me where you see 'stupidity' listed.
