While your impressions are wrong and adding a bit about a popular fork of the program is completely within purview of Wikipedia, I'm not going to argue with you. Also this boilerplate message really sounds somewhat rude to send to someone who isn't like a newbie editor who just joined. Gwenhope (talk) 23:29, 11 August 2019 (UTC)

TERF Discussion - Oldperson

Thanks for the thank. I have a question . If you read my user page, you might understand why I am asking. But do Nblund and Trans-Neptunian-Object support the inclusion of Cristian Williams statement? I think they do, but I get lost in the weeds of these discussions. By the way transphobic TERF P...S... is extremely hostile and angry. I get that from her user page and how she has been pestering me (and apparently others) see our discussion on my talk page. I suspect she is working up an argument to take me to WP:ANI. I don't care she is simply driven by her self righteous anger, and believes she has the right to point out blemishes and harass without consequence. At least that is what I take away from her user and talk page.Oldperson (talk) 19:25, 15 September 2019 (UTC)

@Oldperson: both of those users seem to have complex options overall, but specifically on the Williams statement, they both seem supportive of inclusion and against Lmatt's removal.
Regarding user PS, she is very hostile and angry in a lot of these Talk threads on TERF. It's just kinda sad because you and Mathglot both assume good faith and try to be neutral much more than her. Heck, I even have to put aside my heavy feelings regarding these topics as a transgender woman myself. They represent their position, poorly.Gwen Hope (talk) (contrib) 22:45, 15 September 2019 (UTC)
Thanks Gwen. Too bad there is no way to carry on a private conversation on WP.I am sympathetic (obvious) to the situation, and have absolutely no tolerance for haters, phobes, bigots and the like, it is complete irony and sadness to discover TERFS allied with homophobes. I find that AGF is a strain at times, and that the numbers who are adept at manipulating the guidelines like NPOV and AGF are legion. Hats off to them, they are very adept, if not devious and dishonest. Myself I am upfront and obvious, but were I not so old I might eventually catch on.FYI in 1993 I had an opportunity to meet Dr Seghers in Brussels, Belgium, FWIW.If you care you can reach me at ftskc012 at yahoo.Oldperson (talk) 23:37, 15 September 2019 (UTC)

@Lmatt: Yes, I see that. You removed my reformatting which removes the need for the ec template. Now get off my page. Gwen Hope (talk) (contrib) 17:32, 19 September 2019 (UTC)

Reverting Merge Template Removal

What did I miss? I believe that you created the page as a fork, but an admin put up a template suggesting that it be merged (thus negating your separate article) and you reverted my removal of the article. I created the draft as a fork. The admin who published it shortly after I moved the article from user to draft namespace put that merge placard there. Lo ciento, compadre. You're fine honey, I just think it's better to listen to the admin. Gwen Hope (talk) (contrib) 00:57, 21 September 2019 (UTC)

Flyer 22 Edit Warring Warning

Why did you post a stop warning here As I read it they were reverting Lmatt's insistence on posting their POV. I am really confused now.Oldperson (talk) 16:15, 21 September 2019 (UTC)

@Oldperson: Unless outright vandalism, typically edit wars go two ways (as I understand it) if there's a single editor doing all the reverting versus another. Gwen Hope (talk) (contrib) 18:24, 22 September 2019 (UTC)
That I understand, but in the case above. It was Lmatt who was engaging in edit warring, but it was Flyer22 who got the warning. Or did I scrdew that up?. Which I often do.Oldperson (talk) 18:31, 22 September 2019 (UTC)

Fixing omitted signatures

Hi GwenHope, when you supply or fix omitted signatures, as you did here at Talk:TERF, don't sign your own name as well, as it just gets too confusing. Your name will be preserved in the History, to see who did it. Also, see the templates {{unsig}} and {{xsign}} for a quicker way to do this.

Even easier: you can import a script into your Common.js which will add a little widget to your Preview mode window, and if you are editing a section where the last entry on the page is unsigned, you just have to click the widget, and it will go find who wrote it, and plunk the signature in there for you. Then if it looks good, you just hit 'Publish', and you're done. If you want to try this, Create your Common.js file, and copy the first 3 lines from mine into yours, and save it (everything up to the blank line). The widget has limitations: the unsigned entry has to be last in the section; but you can always use either of the two templates in those cases. Cheers, Mathglot (talk) 01:00, 6 October 2019 (UTC)

I just followed the example of the signature fixing bots which sign their fixes. Thank you for letting me know! Gwen Hope (talk) (contrib) 01:01, 6 October 2019 (UTC)

Erasure

I don't know how this was ever created. It looks again just another attempt to rebrand TERF, by playing victim. And I have grave doubts that any transwoman is trying to force any lesbian into a relationship. A forced relationship is rape. Outside of rape, there is no way, in the western world, that two adults can be forced into a relationship. The premise of the argument (article)is ridiculous. rollback

Hi Gwenhope. After reviewing your request for "rollbacker", I have enabled rollback on your account. Keep in mind these things when going to use rollback:

  • Getting rollback is no more momentous than installing Twinkle.
  • Rollback should be used to revert clear cases of vandalism only, and not good faith edits.
  • Rollback should never be used to edit war.
  • If abused, rollback rights can be revoked.
  • Use common sense.

If you no longer want rollback, contact me and I'll remove it. Also, for some more information on how to use rollback, see Wikipedia:Administrators' guide/Rollback (even though you're not an admin). I'm sure you'll do great with rollback, but feel free to leave me a message on my talk page if you run into troubles or have any questions about appropriate/inappropriate use of rollback. Thank you for helping to reduce vandalism. Happy editing! Beeblebrox (talk) 22:02, 29 November 2020 (UTC)

Hello I'm trying to make some changes on Thierry de Montbrial's English page : broken links or unrelevant links in references to have correct non error links but you've restored them several times. I appreciate you trying to fix things. After all, WP:Link rot is one of the worst things we deal with here for reliable citations. The first thing to do before removing a lot of content is explain why, otherwise it looks like vandalism, which is also one of our most enduring problems. However, before moving links that are often used as citations, please see if you can find suitable replacements for them on an archive database, such as the Wayback Machine. Remember to warn

Just wanted to remind you to warn disruptive users such as Diogo Padinha when you revert them. In most cases that stops them and otherwise makes it easier to block them if they continue. Thanks for your anti vandalism work! --Trialpears (talk) 10:16, 10 December 2020 (UTC)

Persistent vandalism issue

Hi, I noticed you are an active edit patroller, so I would be grateful if you could help with a particularly persistent vandal, who keeps removing encyclopedic content and sources despite repeated interventions and warnings from admin Materialscientist, particularly on the page Women in Kuwait. Sorry if this post is long but this doesn’t seem the ordinary vandal.

This user acts under three IDs: a logged account (Foalselec) and two IPs (188.71.233.26 and 37.39.140.226) and as you can see its edits consist almost entirely in the removal of encyclopedic content related to human rights. It seems to know its way of gaming the system by making a series of small edits after each major reversal or removal of content, and its edit summaries are often wikilawyering or pure expressions of grudge.

Just to give some background:

As IP 188.71.233.26, the user vandalized the pages Women in Kuwait and Shia Islam in Kuwait on 30 October. The vandalisms were reverted by Materialscientist, who left warnings on the IP’s talk page, but the vandal ignored the warnings and made those unconstructive edits again: [1]

After I reverted the vandalism on Women in Kuwait, the user did it again as IP 37.39.140.226 on 5 December: [2]

I reverted the edits and reported this to Materialscientist, who semi-protected the page, at which point the vandal re-vandalized the page with its real account Foalselec, going full wikilawyer both in the edit summaries and on Materialscientist’s talk page. Diff: [3]

At this point I realized that simply reverting the vandalism every few days would not be the most effective idea and it could be perceived as an edit war where the real loser is the Wikipedia reader who wants information. I would be grateful if you could do something to revert the vandalism and prevent it from happening again.

Again apologies for this long post but I thought I needed to provide you with all the details.

Jao1Jao1Jao1 (talk) 19:02, 13 December 2020 (UTC)

Jao1Jao1Jao1, I'm glad you have an interest in keeping the wiki looking well and free of vandalism. However what we have here isn't necessarily vandalism. I agree, Foalselec's edits are quite WP:BOLD. The similarity between the IP and user account edits also appears to be suspicious. However we must WP:AGF. Even if someone has an account, it's technically not against the rules to edit while WP:LOGOUT. However if the same editor is being disruptive or vandalizing in a WP:SNEAKY manner, this merits WP:SPI.
Overall, I'm going to look over this page, the accounts related, and the factors involved. I suggest you WP:DISENGAGE for the time being. Edit warring could definitely occur if you two kept going back and forth reverting each other's edits. This is why the WP:BRD cycle is so important. Foal has made some bold edits. You reverted them. That was the perfect time for you two to both go to the talk page of the article and figure out things through discussion. However this did not occur.
Foal is correct that nobody WP:OWNS the content on an article. Using terminology like "grudge" can be seen as WP:ASPERSIONS. It's important to remember to WP:AGF. I agree with them that there's some issues with citation overkill, but their editing is also introducing other issues, which I will address. Thank you for communicating and trying to continue to better the wiki.
I also suggest you branch out. Both you and Foal have little-to-no main namespace edits to your account other than this single article. Gwennie🐈💬 📋⦆ 20:01, 13 December 2020 (UTC)
Thank you for your explanation and for looking into this. I will disengage as advised. I agree it's the best thing to do and I'm happy to let this be handled by someone more experienced.
To be fair I initially considered discussion, but I was put off by the sneakiness and the fact that an admin identified the IPs' edits as unconstructive and disruptive, to the point of protecting the page. I took on board however that some information became out of date and I updated it. I now take the point about excess of citations.
Thanks again! Jao1Jao1Jao1 (talk) 20:58, 13 December 2020 (UTC)

Rayhantanvirbd, that isn't the actual ranking. I've looked into the sources myself. Additionally you removed a lot of valid maintenance tags. Regardless given your edits, I believe you to be a sock/meatpuppet of the same person/group who has been inflating Bangladeshi medical college articles in advertising like fashion. Responding to edit requests

Hi Gwennie, just a quick note on responding to edit requests (as you did at Talk:2021 storming of the United States Capitol). Please make sure when you respond to an edit request you change answered=no to answered=yes. I use Jackmcbarn's awesome editProtectedHelper (WP:EPH) to do this. I suggest you use it too if you plan to respond to edit requests :)

Also, another note regarding your response more specifically, if a newcomer (as this IP evidently is) and they erroneously made and edit request as they did here, you may want to direct them to the Teahouse or our help pages, rather than explaining in a way that might be confusing for them as a new Wikipedian. Most of these people don't check archives, or really know how to.

Advice for a new editor

Hi Gwennie, My user account is old but I should be considered a new editor and could use a confidence boost from a more experienced user. Yesterday, I interacted with what appears to be an even more inexperienced user (Rkerver) in these three locations:

Would you mind taking a quick look and giving me your opinion on what I should do (or not do) next? Much appreciated. JaredHWood💬 17:04, 22 January 2021 (UTC)

Jared.h.wood, okay first thing, when you have an edit being repeatedly made after reversion, we need to give template warnings for adding unsourced information or edit warring, as I have now done (see Rkerver's talk page). This lets inexperienced users know that they're being disruptive. However you also have warned them in article talk pages as well and they have also continued.
These warnings can be automatically-added to a user's talk page with the help of the Twinkle utility. If you don't have it, I suggest you get it.
If they continue this behavior, consider filing a report at WP:AN/I or if they keep edit-warring WP:AN/EW. We can't in good faith consider this editor's edits as vandalism (in which case we would use WP:AIV). So you would need to treat them as good faith, but disruptive edits. ~Gwennie🐈💬 📋⦆ 19:38, 22 January 2021 (UTC)

As a member of WikiProject LGBT studies, editing on LGBTQ+ issues or if you identify as part of the LGBTQ+ community, come help us set goals, develop our organisation and structures, consider how to respond to issues faced by Queer editors, and plan for the next 12 months.

We will be meeting online for 3 half-days, 14–16 May at 1400–1730 UTC. While our working language is English, we are looking to accommodate users who would prefer to participate in other languages, including translation facilities.

More information, and registration details, at QW2021.--Wikimedia LGBT+ User Group 02:45, 27 April 2021 (UTC)

Valereee, I appreciate the information. The question in nature I think is important to both myself and many other editors. Philosophy speaks heavily to mindset and given that I (and presumably others) are not familiar with this user in particular, I feel it helpful to ask. I apologize if you feel the question extraneous. ~Gwennie🐈💬 📋⦆ 19:17, 2 July 2021 (UTC)
Okey doke. —valereee (talk) 19:20, 2 July 2021 (UTC)

Thanks for your question and support at my RfA

Your question on its face seemed an easy one but it was able to generate a moment of clarity in me, an impromptu response which reads now as sincere and true. Full disclosure: a friend made comments on my first draft and the suggestion helped me complete my thought in a better way. Thanks for your support. BusterD (talk) 16:34, 12 July 2021 (UTC)

BusterD, then the question had the effect I intended. Congratulations on your ascension to mophood. I appreciate your responsiveness and kindness. I fully understand about friends weighing in; helping each other is the only way we get better as a species. And nobody becomes admin without robust community support behind them, so it is all well and fitting. On a side note, do you use Discord? We'd love to have someone as thoughtful as you as part of the unofficial official server (see WP:DISCORD). ~Gwennie🐈💬 📋⦆ 16:42, 12 July 2021 (UTC)

re derecho

This is the sentence as it exists:

Residents of Cedar Rapids had mixed emotions regarding official responses and assistance.

I tried changing it (to a poorly worded one because I tried to merge to sentences, that's on me) to try to get rid of the mixed; it was not mixed. The source does not say it was mixed. My experience says it was not mixed. To say it was "mixed" is original research.

What irks me is that my attempt to change was reverted with simply the message, "no original research." You took away a sentence that could well be justified by the source, and put back one that absolutely isn't justified by the source. If my edit is original research, what is yours? --Golbez (talk) 02:30, 22 July 2021 (UTC)

@Golbez: If you go through the three sources cited after that sentence is written, you'll find the sources describe a variety of emotions — frustration, anger, abandonment, worry. Hence why I said "mixed emotions" when I wrote this line. However I can see that "mixed emotions" is often used as a shorthand at times for a mixture of both positive and negative emotions. So it might be suitable to rewrite it, perhaps something like "Some Cedar Rapids residents felt frustrated, angry, or abandoned regarding official responses and assistance."
The primary reason I used the NOR edit summary is because you changed it with the summary you did, saying that the situation was horrible. Indeed it was. I agree. However we have to edit in accordance with the sources, as you're well aware of, and that edit summary gave the impression that the reason you changed it was personal opinion rather than following the sources. This reply, however, feels a bit sharp. I feel like you haven't read the sources attached. ~Gwennie🐈💬 📋⦆ 11:47, 22 July 2021 (UTC)
Considering I had been to therapy that day for PTSD relating to the derecho, I agree, I was a bit sharp, and I apologize. But yeah, I definitely see "mixed emotions" as both positive and negative, whereas the source clearly indicates them as all negative. --Golbez (talk) 15:40, 22 July 2021 (UTC)
@Golbez: I'm very sorry to hear that. I know many who suffered in the derecho and waded through a lot of their pain when creating the page and also my social media as well. I'm sorry if you felt like my reversion wasn't explained well enough. I, too, have been dealing with starting a very physically-demanding new job and my energy isn't there at times. ~Gwennie🐈💬 📋⦆ 22:44, 22 July 2021 (UTC)

question about editing to the derecho page

I know that my edits were removed - edits that recognized that due to COVID non-profits were not able to provide the assistance they needed to. I added comments about elderly not going to community gathering locations for access to food due to fear of COVID. I consider myself to be a source as a leader in the community. One of the issues with this event is that it was not covered well by news media! So personal testimony of having lived through it should matter.— Preceding unsigned comment added by SallySmurf (talkcontribs) 16:52, 10 August 2021 (UTC)

@SallySmurf: While you may have experience, and it may be true, per policy, Wikipedia does not allow for original research, that is, research or study conducted or other data or facts obtained by one's own experience. (See WP:NOR). You are not and cannot be a source per policy. ~Gwennie🐈💬 📋⦆ 22:36, 10 August 2021 (UTC)

RFA2024 update: no longer accepting new proposals in phase I

Hey there! This is to let you know that phase I of the 2024 requests for adminship (RfA) review is now no longer accepting new proposals. Lots of proposals remain open for discussion, and the current round of review looks to be on a good track towards making significant progress towards improving RfA's structure and environment. I'd like to give my heartfelt thanks to everyone who has given us their idea for change to make RfA better, and the same to everyone who has given the necessary feedback to improve those ideas. The following proposals remain open for discussion:

  • Proposal 2, initiated by HouseBlaster, provides for the addition of a text box at Wikipedia:Requests for adminship reminding all editors of our policies and enforcement mechanisms around decorum.
  • Proposals 3 and 3b, initiated by Barkeep49 and Usedtobecool, respectively, provide for trials of discussion-only periods at RfA. The first would add three extra discussion-only days to the beginning, while the second would convert the first two days to discussion-only.
  • Proposal 5, initiated by SilkTork, provides for a trial of RfAs without threaded discussion in the voting sections.
  • Proposals 6c and 6d, initiated by BilledMammal, provide for allowing users to be selected as provisional admins for a limited time through various concrete selection criteria and smaller-scale vetting.
  • Proposal 7, initiated by Lee Vilenski, provides for the "General discussion" section being broken up with section headings.
  • Proposal 9b, initiated by Reaper Eternal, provides for the requirement that allegations of policy violation be substantiated with appropriate links to where the alleged misconduct occured.
  • Proposals 12c, 21, and 21b, initiated by City of Silver, Ritchie333, and HouseBlaster, respectively, provide for reducing the discretionary zone, which currently extends from 65% to 75%. The first would reduce it 65%–70%, the second would reduce it to 50%–66%, and the third would reduce it to 60%–70%.
  • Proposal 13, initiated by Novem Lingaue, provides for periodic, privately balloted admin elections.
  • Proposal 14, initiated by Kusma, provides for the creation of some minimum suffrage requirements to cast a vote.
  • Proposals 16 and 16c, initiated by Thebiguglyalien and Soni, respectively, provide for community-based admin desysop procedures. 16 would desysop where consensus is established in favor at the administrators' noticeboard; 16c would allow a petition to force reconfirmation.
  • Proposal 16e, initiated by BilledMammal, would extend the recall procedures of 16 to bureaucrats.
  • Proposal 17, initiated by SchroCat, provides for "on-call" admins and 'crats to monitor RfAs for decorum.
  • Proposal 18, initiated by theleekycauldron, provides for lowering the RfB target from 85% to 75%.
  • Proposal 24, initiated by SportingFlyer, provides for a more robust alternate version of the optional candidate poll.
  • Proposal 25, initiated by Femke, provides for the requirement that nominees be extended-confirmed in addition to their nominators.
  • Proposal 27, initiated by WereSpielChequers, provides for the creation of a training course for admin hopefuls, as well as periodic retraining to keep admins from drifting out of sync with community norms.
  • Proposal 28, initiated by HouseBlaster, tightens restrictions on multi-part questions.

To read proposals that were closed as unsuccessful, please see Wikipedia:Requests for adminship/2024 review/Phase I/Closed proposals. You are cordially invited once again to participate in the open discussions; when phase I ends, phase II will review the outcomes of trial proposals and refine the implementation details of other proposals. Another notification will be sent out when this phase begins, likely with the first successful close of a major proposal. Happy editing! theleekycauldron (talk • she/her), via:
