Re XKDC: nope, the transcript div doesn't work under Chrome in either JAWS or NVDA, the two main Windows screen readers. I didn't bother testing it on Firefox/Edge because both screen readers are reasonably well optimised for Chrome these days. Nope, I did not know about the IP admin ... tell me more? Hmm. Well I've always suspected Randall has some account other than the long-dormant user:xkcd, so who knows, maybe he'll see this. Either way, good to know. By the way, Wugapodes has proposed adding xkcd and explainxkcd prefixes to the interwiki sitemap. Perhaps then we could get a nice template that would do something like [[xkcd:315|xkcd 315]]<sup>[[explainxkcd:315|explained]]</sup>. (I mean, we could do that now—xkcd 315^explained—but the interwiki linking would add a certain imprimatur.

Anyways! IP admin. My source for this is User:NoSeptember/Early admins (20 Sept 2002), which contains the line Robert Merkel July 2001 as 61.9.128.xxx. I assume that was back when "adminship" meant access to the shared "admin password"? Sadly, there do not seem to be any (surviving) diffs of the IP engaging in any sort of administrative activity. Robert, a fellow-countryman of yours, is still around, so someone sufficiently curious could ping them.

My other fun wikiarchaeology fact is that a number is blocked. Not an IP. Not an autoblock number. Not an all-digits username. This line in BlockList shows that at 18:09 on 13 February 2004, Dori blocked the number 1703. If you fiddle around with "hide" parameters, you'll see that BlockList considers it to be an account block, but User:1703 does not exist. That's the fourth block of the BlockList era. Which, as you probably know, goes back farther than the Special:Log/block era, leading to cases like Wanli2 (talk · contribs), who has no block notice on their contribs page or if you try to edit their userpage, and no block log entry, but is listed by NavPopups as "BLOCKED". XTools says both that they've never been blocked, and that their current block length is indefinite! Quarry, hopefully, settles it. I'd love to know what they'd see if they logged in, though... Wonder if anyone around now has an alt that got blocked back then.

Re IP admin: yes I'm very familiar with that user. They weren't able to log in though because of cookie issues (see User talk:Robert Merkel/ancient). They also wouldn't have been an admin because to use the shared password, you had to be able to log in (which they couldn't do until the phase II software) came out.

Wow re weird block ... sorry, I've gone and ruined it though out of principle ... if you search for "#1703" at Wikipedia:Block log/Archive1, you'll notice that it really should have been unblocked earlier but for some reason the software wouldn't let that happen. I found the block ID through a fork of your query and found out from another query that the user ID referred to a user named Lsmkirkpatrick. Hehehe re typo! The RonBot, which you locally unblocked due to global locking of the bot, hid this. I wonder whether you can undo the bot's hiding. The other similar image is tagged as "PD-ineligible-USonly" was undeleted as the result of the FFD discussion. Teeth

I made a number of Wikipedia additions of teeth numbers of various animals and I think you reverted them all as I did not include a reference. Susquehanna County demographic data

Hi. I'm a bit puzzled. Obviously, you're much more familiar than I am with the ins and outs of this article and its history, the track record of that other editor, and so on. But looking narrowly at the present case, it seemed to me that the data was relevant and, in most cases, duly sourced. And your "we don't care" certainly didn't give me confidence in your good faith.

I mean, I'm sure there's a procedure for getting someone banned from editing an article if there's a history of disruption; but, short of that, it's not appropriate to revert an edit solely because of who made it, where the specific edit might be unobjectionable, right? It's shorthand for the Great Plains, not some offhand reference to plains in general, or eighteenth Century archaic Capitalisation. The introduction to Great Plains uses this capitalisation:

The Great Plains (French: Grandes Plaines), sometimes simply "the Plains", is a broad expanse of flatland in North America.

Another old page history investigation

Hola Graham. I happened across a random archive of deletion discussions from February 2007 - User:BL~enwiki/New VFD. There are a number of red links in it where the titles don't exist even as deleted. Can you tell me what happened there? For example, Abuse/old is supposed to be where an old version of Abuse was moved to. I'm interested in the mechanics of that rather than the content. I suspect some may exist in the May 2003 database dump, as you recovered one in 2013, Wikipedia:Arguments. If so, I'd be very grateful if you could dig out Wikipedia:Article title length ("funny random crap"), Wikipedia:References Used, and The last page (also random crap but sounds like classic early wiki japes). @Scott: they're all listed at Wikipedia:Deletion log/February 2004 (3) and aren't in the modern Wikipedia database due to a crash in June 2004; see footnote c at Wikipedia:Viewing and restoring deleted pages. They're not in the May 2003 database dump ... I've gone and programmatically checked many (not quite all, but honestly most of the interesting ones) of the pages in that dump that have revisions missing from the current database (see User:Graham87/SHA-1). Edit-warring, personal attacks and other concerning behaviour from an IP user

Hi, I got your name from the list of recently active admins at ANI. I've been having a few problems with an IP user from Sydney editing under various addresses who seems to very interested in the history of scouting. Known IPs:1, 2, [[4]], [[5]], [[6]]

They have posted personal attacks on a talkpage, I wasn't particularly bothered at the time because the whole thing was about which was the correct tag to use on an article(!), but it seems to be part of a pattern of behaviour. [[7]]

They are edit warring across multiple pages, with regards to the content of the lede. As there are two users involved, I reverted back to the status quo prior to their edits (different from both proposed ledes) prior to discussion on the talk page. Unfortunately this was almost immediately reverted and messages explaining the situation and asking to self revert were ignored. [[8]], [[9]], [[10]].

A further concern is their changing of section headings detailing the lives of the subjects of the above articles to "Non-notable details", which is clearly connected to their merger nomination of the 3 articles.

I wonder if it would be possible for you to revert the ledes of the 3 articles to the versions which were in place prior to their edits in order for discussion to occur without edit-warring? In the diffs above my edits have the original lede while preserving the IP users edits to the body text.

In terms of the users behaviour, perhaps a quiet word from a third party to advise them to be less confrontational might help?

I'm glad you had a laugh over my comment on the AfD for the "coalition" article that was so bad. I'm a retired 40-year survivor of first-year college student essays, and my disposition has always been first to try to be kind to the writer. About a month into my first teaching experience, though, as a matter of survival I took Kenny Rogers' lyric about poker games to heart: "You've got to know when to hold 'em / Know when to fold 'em / Know when to walk away/ Know when to run..." As far as I can see Special:Diff/1082505936 reverting an accepted revision without explanation is both not best practice and also not acceptable. In passing I note the level-3 vital wheel article has been a significant vandalism target and may be unsuitable for the pending changes set by Ohnoitsjamie if that is simply going to cause problems. Draft over Redirect, and how to preserve edit history?

Hi, again! I notice your interest in reading article edit histories, so I think you are the right person to ask about an issue I haven't dealt with before:

I've had a request from GreenBlueGreen to review and comment on Draft:Ron Diamond, and I noticed after the draft was started another editor created a redirect, Ron Diamond. The draft needs only a bit of cleanup to be ready for article space, but how to move it there without losing the edit history for either the new article or the redirect? ...or am I overthinking why the new article text should not be cut and pasted over the redirect? My name is Steven Stavrakis - i was the owner of the Waterfront Records record store and record label. I actually started both of them.

I just attempted to update the Waterfront Records wiki but appear to have been blocked/banned instigated by you?

I have not idea what i have done...the reason appears to be: "Editing from this range has been disabled (blocked) by an administrator in response to abuse."

I haven't abused anyone??

Sayre Area School District

I had closed the DRN case, and then saw you were an admin, so I rolled back what I said and the closure, and my reversion to the oldest static version until consensus could be reached on the Sayre page. However, I am confused and concerned- I don't understand why you are hard-lining on this issue with Delphinium. They have said they want to make edits and improve the page. You say they aren't established, they have been editing for years- obviously not consistently- but their edits do appear constructive overall. Why not work with them? Why not discuss it with them? Why threaten to block them? It doesn't seem to make sense to me. I'm not trying to be confrontational- I'm genuinely curious what I am missing. Yes- that page obviously needs a good strong clean up, but if a less experienced editor wants to take a stab at it, why not help them instead of just forcing mass deletions? Why not discuss it? Another editor agreed that the strike information could be relevant- so you've ignored two voices on that one, and if it received a lot of local coverage, I'm inclined to agree with them. And being a local resident doesn't mean they have a COI (I don't know- maybe they do, but if they say they don't I see no reason to assume differently at this point). I edit local pages because I love local history. Not because I'm paid by local communities, just because its what I enjoy and I'm in a fairly rural area so I'm one of very few who edit those pages. @Bishonen: Thanks for the note, but as a screen reader user, that interface sounds kinda painful to me ... not that anything can be done about that. This might be a weird thing to say but I actually really like WikiBlame ... yes it can be slow and finicky but so is Wikipedia. I have enough of a background in strange computer systems that I can usually figure out how to get it to do what I want. Having said that, I might just try out "Who Wrote That?" just to see if I can ... BTW you can link to it more simply just using mw:Who Wrote That? ... much less text. Regarding the assertions in this diff [11] regarding the ol' "blank lines cause lists to be closed and reopened" worry, didn't you tell once that, in fact, screen readers handle this OK once some option is set appropriately? Or maybe it wasn't the blank lines thing you were talking about, but shifts abrupt shifts in indent markup, like "::" followed by "::::", or "*::" followed by ":::".

@EEng: I don't remember saying anything like that. Maybe it was about abrupt shifts in indent markup, but even then, they need to have the same punctuation (e.g. colons) as the previous text. Or maybe I said something about how the NVDA screen reader is more fussy than JAWS about colons ... but NVDA is very widely used these days. Graham87 07:30, 18 May 2022 (UTC)
