Re: elevators

Graham - you asked about my involvement with elevators - I actually work for OTIS Elevator Company in Sydney as a software and systems engineer. In addition to taking care of the more basic day-to-day IT issues in our department, I also write and maintain software that controls the elevators. Punctuation

Graham: thanks for your comments about my edits to Steven Fletcher. I have been trying to improve the quality of writing on Wikipedia so to make it easier for everyone to read. I had in mind people who are reading English as a foreign language, but your reason for using correct punctuation is a good one. On my user page I have posted a short rant about commas. I hope that you don't mind that I have included your comment on my user page to support my campaign for better punctuation. I will put a link to it at the end of this message, and I warn you that I have offered free commas to anyone who feels they don't have enough, so you will come across a block of several dozen of them. I've been meaning to ask you a question, Graham. How does the speech synthesizer alert you to the presence of Wikipedia links in articles? And then how do you select them? Grammar and the like

Dear Graham: the insights that you made on my user talk page interested me greatly. It pleases me to see someone who also has an interest in preserving our language and using optimally. I find it saddening that this can be called pedantry. Reverse snobbery and many schools' refusal to teach grammar have, I feel, severely damaged one of the key gifts in life: the ability to write fluently. It is quite astonishing that a large proportion of those who learn English as a foreign language have better grammar skills than many native speakers. I do not consider it a negative thing to want precision in language; in fact, simplifying language usually serves to make it more difficult to understand.

I agree, incidentally, about the use of contractions. I come from a rather untouched part of the country, and there, contractions are used as often as the word 'pavonine' is. Most people around here cannot pronounce nt together, and instead, if quoting a contraction, say something similar to ąt. Consequently, I do not often use them, although, sometimes, they seem weirdly necessary in speech. For some reason, there has been a schism between 'I do not need to' and 'I don't need to;' many people consider the latter to be totally decisive, and the former not. I do not see why some contractions are necessary; shouldn’t, didn’t and the like have as many syllables as their non-contracted versions, so why must they exist? -- IINAG 17:12, 16th August 2005 (UTC)

Ground Zero and Graham: firstly, excuse me if this makes little sense: I have just arisen. Secondly, I agree totally with what you both propose. I think that it is rather detrimental to Wikipedia that there is not much in the way of grammar discussion. As you both know, fixing spelling and grammar is a very silent job; we often just find mistakes and fix them, but this does not stop the same mistakes from being made repeatedly. It would be far more productive to discuss failings of grammar, spelling, punctuation and general style on one easily accessible page. It would be great to have our deliberations on one page, rather than on thousands of unique pages. Furthermore, I find that nearly all the errors that I correct are on pages that no one has ever tagged for copyediting. I should bet that many Wikipedians have qualms over style when they read articles, but do not wish to engage in a wasteful fight with the original article writer. I think that people would be more enthusiastic if they could refer their opinion for general debate. Templates could be added onto pages with a message like ‘some of this article’s grammatical accuracy is disputed’, with a link to the discussion on the grammar desk. The petitioner could explain why they find something wrong, and we could all give our opinions. This zone would not be solely reserved for debates about particular pages, but about grammar questions in general. (I can think of many, such as: why should there be an apostrophe s after numbers?) The discussions could help to formulate a more comprehensive style and grammar FAQ. I think that any centralised system has to be better than the current adhocracy. Sometimes, we have to be vigilantes, but it is more constructive to have consensus.

(By the way, as for the question about the adjective, I do not particularly see why split infinitives are such a crime. I think that language should be both as clear and as precise as possible; unlike the use of commas, I feel that unnaturally convoluting a sentence to ensure that there is no split infinitive does not enhance a sentence’s clarity. However, that is just my opinion.)

Grammar desk

There hasn't be a groundswell of support for my proposal, but then there hasn't really been any opposition, either. And no-one has told me that I can't do it. I plan to go ahead next week and start the page. Here's what I will do:

Create "Wikipedia/Grammar desk" with an introduction explaining the purpose of the page, similar to those on Wikipedia:Help desk and Wikipedia:Reference desk.
Post my "was a former" question to get the ball rolling.
Create links to the page from Wikipedia:Ask a question, Wikipedia:Manual of style, and anywhere else that seems logical.
Create "Wikipedia:Grammar desk/FAQs" that would start with my explanation of that/which and, with IINAG's permission, his explanation of its/it's.

Muslim Brotherhood articles - formatting

Excellent work on the Muslim Brotherhood series of articles. I have a question though. Why are there line breaks about every fifty characters in the source text? This makes editing very difficult for me, as I have to arrow down line by line to edit pages, using a screen reader, as can be seen on my user page. I've just spent time removing the line breaks at History of the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt (1939-1954), but the process is tedious, and I wouldn't like to do it to all the articles. Is there a reason why you have done things this way, or is there a way of removing all the redundant line breaks? Graham 09:36, 28 August 2005 (UTC)

Sorry about the line breaks; they're an artefact of a text editor I sometimes use. I don't know of a convenient way to remove them automatically, but I've just gone through the Muslim Brotherhood articles now, and I think I've removed all of the extra line breaks. Also, were you born blind, or were you able to learn your computing skills while you still had your sight (if ever)?

Energy Maneuverability theory

Thanks for your comment on my [Energy-Maneuverability_theory] page. You're right it's a stub, I put in what I was able to learn from various Boyd biographies I'd been reading but there wasn't much on the theory itself. My further searches have indicated that much of Boyd's work ended up either being classified, or copyrighted and used for commercial purposes in works that I don't have access to. I was hoping that someone who DOES have access to those materials and could write an authoritative treatise might notice the article and add to it.

Ok, I'm one of those odd wikipedians born in the 1950's - I dont think there are many of us, so I can remember being on a Greyhound bus over twenty years ago when one of the passengers of dubious morality or otherwise if you get my gist realised that they might get apprehended for a misdemenour if they werent careful. Also there have been news reports in the last decade where people on the run have been apprehended their due to the police station. Thanks for putting it back. Having done it by car, train and greyhound bus. The floating sense of the train and greyhound bus, was surreal, time passes, you look at the clock, you have travelled a significant distance but nothing seems to really change. In cars it is very different.vcxlor 12:37, 5 November 2005 (UTC)

About the mafia movie with the balloons

I checked around and I could not find the name of the movie where the gangsters tie balloons to a radio jamming device. I perhaps tend to agree with you, however I have another idea how this list could be still accomodated with the "science" page. I am developing an article titled "Language of science". You would agree that the lexicon of science includes many words that are not common in the common language. Words for concepts, processes and phenomena of science are prominent amongst them. Nullabor

Hi Graham, yes that paragraph needs attention, I didnt want to specifically go through the politics of greyhound and the other bus companys and all the rest, so was trying to be a bit indirect if you get my drift, it's almost a separate article the issue of inter-state bus issues, but I have no idea where to get the information from, apart from my own hazy memories. Trust you are well, and sorry I never really gave a long enough description to you those months ago about what it's like sitting in a greyhound bus going across there - I did it up to 4 times i think, I've done the train 4 times, and by car 6 or 8 I forget. The last time (excluding flying over of course) was the best for drama, my car rolled just out of caiguna, but that's a very long time ago now. Cheers and have a very good christmas. An OLD afd

Hello Pianoman. I noticed a long time ago you nominated List of Jewish historians for deletion. It was closed with a no consensus. Ever since then the list has been lagging around not being approved upon or even noticed. The list has slim to no contemporaries (the only list I could find even similar to it was List of Irish historians), and it is pretty much listcruft. I have attempted to reform the article but to no avail. The users who created it have long left Wikipedia. I am wondering if you are in support for renominating it for deletion on the grounds that the list is unmaintanble, has no predecessors or contemporaries (except the Irish list), and is all around listmania material. We should also mention that it COULD be created into a category. If you are in support for a renomination (I ask your permission since you were the first to nominate it) then say so and I will afd it or just put it up for deletion again yourself. Thanks. Hi. Yes, there has been much controversy over Jewish lists because a group of users were having problems with WP:OWN and listmania with them. I've been attempting to reform them and found myself with accusations such as those presented there which have usually been misinterpreted (sometimes purposely so) to make it seem as vandalism etc. I have asked that no other people on Wikipedia I know vote in any of my afds to resolve possible accusation of double voting. I just recently made Category:Jewish historians to include all the people on the list that merit being both Jewish and a historian. I have left out some unconfirms though. There were also lists of Jewish Members of French, Russian, and German Science and Art Societies even though no normal lists for those societies existed. The only one that is left is List of Jewish Fellows of the Royal Society which I hotly debated, but there were users such as User:Poetlister and User:Newport who demanded it stay - though it has yet to be verified or cleaned up. Is there a reason you are not an admin? Would you like me to vet you against my admin nomination standards? Quick check; you've got around 225 reverts to your name, and are active in a number of admin appropriate areas (though not with a ton of edits to any particular admin appropriate area). Your talk page contributions relative to overall contributions are a bit lower than some RfA voters like to see, but your article contributions are immense. At 7,000 plus edits, I think you would sail through RfA pretty cleanly.
Also, I think it's great we have a least one person contributing in large quantities to this project who uses non-visual interfaces. I am well aware of web accessibility issues, and have worked with people who use non-visual interfaces. Hi Graham, just got on, and found you've been cleaning up some of the articles that I have started to do with the hills out of perth - I'm the person who never adequately explained the nullabor experience, although I now have a signature of satu suro which in indonesian is the name of the first day of the year in their calendar which is out of sync with ours, - it is aligned with the islamic calendar, and I think the next satu suro is coming up soon. Hello Graham!

I see we both live on the edge of civilisaton. I find it interesting that you found no truth in my alterations to the violence article. Maybe one of the blind people i see in town frequenting coffee shops is you, unless you are a net junkie. If you are ever in central park, forrest chase or inside joynt venture updating your bong, there is a chance you'll hear me being an obnoxious prat.

If you like, we could talk about oombulgurri. I find it funny that many houses in town owned by a white man has a cage around it to keep out (i wonder what).

Accessibility of the T-34 article

Hi Graham. Thanks a lot for your advice on accessibility regarding the templates. It's rare to get a real-world picture of the subject, and valuable in the context of Wikipedia.

Would you mind taking a quick look at the article "T-34" and let me know how well it reads in Jaws? I'm trying to bring it up to featured article status. It's a long article (hope you don't find the subject too boring), but I have a few specific questions in five areas:

Infobox at the top, common to many tank and AFV articles: does it need a title, or ID, or class attribute to indicate that it's a navbox? Does it need a skip link? Are its contents understandable? Atypically, this article has a second infobox, in the "Revolutionary design" section for layout reasons—should it be at the beginning?
Citations are in Harvard style; in parentheses. Is it obvious what they are?
There's a table in the section "Soviet medium tank models of WWII". The section heading serves as its title, the table's caption as a supplementary note. There are line breaks in some of its headings—is that bad? Can the readability be improved? Should it have a summary attribute?
Near the end of "Combat history" there is a list of countries employing the T-34. It's broken into three sections for layout reasons—bad idea? Asterisks indicate that some countries still used the tank in the 1990s, with an explanation after the list—is this confusing?
After the "External links" section there is a big fat navigation box titled "Soviet Armored fighting vehicles of World War II". Confusing or not?

Hm; I hoped this would be brief but it looks like I'm asking a lot. No rush, but I would appreciate any advice. Hi Graham. I've made some changes for accessibility to the T-34 article, and I'd like you to give them a quick look-over when you have the time.

T-34#Table of tank models now has a sensible caption and summary, and I've put the notes into the last row of the table, to associate them with it.
The list of countries at the end of T-34#Combat history is still in a table, but now I've split it up by regions and provided a caption and summary. I think this arrangement could make it more understandable in visual browsers and others. I may still split it up further, but this is good for now.
In the navbox at the end of the article I de-linked all the table headers, so it doesn't try to do too many things at once.

It's not that ugly, if we can just figure out some specifics. In looking at a Wikipedia page source, the Common.css stylesheet seems to be loading, and so I'm unclear why your new JAWS version isn't supressing hiddenStructure. Copyright violation procedures

I saw the violation at Vestax VRX-2000 Vinyl Recorder also. I see that the content was reposted eight minutes after an admin deleted it. You placed a violation notice there, but the instructions at Wikipedia:Copyright problems say you should also blank the page if it is a certain violation, and this one is. Modern Times

Regarding your redirect of Modern Times; unfortunately, redirecting to Modern World confused things further because there was no link to Modern Times (film) (the former default Modern Times article). Furthermore, before (and after) it was moved the film article included links to a disambig page that included *other* meanings. All this was hidden after the redirect.

I've decided to make the 'naked' Modern Times page a disambig page. This will include a link to Modern World. We could include a disambig line in Modern World saying "Modern Times redirects here, please see the disambig page", but things are confusing enough already, and I'm not convinced that any one desired meaning for "Modern Times" is *far* more likely than any other.

I'm not blaming you for this, but the situation is getting messed up, and that's the best way I can see of doing it.

It's getting very late here, so I'm not thinking straight - but how about having modern times redirect to modern times (disambiguation), which can mention the article modern world? I think it makes more sense just to have Modern Times itself holding the disambig content; I've already copied it over (the disambig was all mine in the first place, so loss of history isn't an issue), and it doesn't make sense to have a "(disambiguation)"-qualified page if the naked-name article doesn't hold the most common meaning. Otherwise I'm in agreement with you.

Arranging content in vertical columns

As a user of screen readers, I'd like to have your feedback on the practice of formatting content in multiple columns. For instance, some people like to put long See also sections into multiple columns, because they perceive the long list as wasting screen space. This is currently done by putting the content in table cells, which I understand is bad for accessibility. I've tried to create a new template for columned data that does it with floated divs and CSS instead. Is this an improvement in your opinion? Additionally, with the CSS-based layout, people who really don't like the columns can turn them off in their monobook.css. ;-) The original table-based templates are at Template:col-begin, and my new div- and CSS-based ones are at Template talk:Columns. — Omegatron 20:36, 19 March 2006 (UTC)

I disagree with you most strongly with your decision to delete Vox Melba Mastering Labs as a 'non-notable company'. Please explain exactly who you are, and what is your position at Wkiipedia? You include links to other websites in the cylinder phonograph section. Most of these, too, are non-noteable, since they are individuals who restore cylinders for a hobby. Take "tinfoil", for example. You are clearly indicating a bias, in so far as I am concerned. Please inform me the email address of someone else at Wikipedia with whom I may lodge a formal complaint in this respect.

Header Links

In case it gets lost in the huge Talk:Main Page I put a test of h2 style headers for the main page at User:CBDunkerson/Sandbox5. If that works we should be able to get it incorporated into the main page. Let me know if this change doesn't work. If not then we'll need to try to figure out how to use '==' header notation in the new format.

I also made a similar update to the template used to put box-titles on most portals - which may make those more navigable in the future. --CBDunkerson 19:43, 20 March 2006 (UTC)

If you are blind, do not take out people's writing. You can't even see what it looks like, fool. Could you not amend pages when you can't even see what you're doing, please? You would think a blind person would have the common sense not to amend other people's work, but no. You dabble. Idiot.
