Disambiguation link notification for October 11[edit]

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. An automated process has detected that when you recently edited Tropidostoma Assemblage Zone, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Burrows (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are usually incorrect, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of unrelated topics with similar titles. (Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.)

Use of navbox templates[edit]

Hi GinaVig. Your recent edit to Dwyka Group included adding a navbox. That is a good thing generally, and thanks for doing it, but it seems you are not yet familiar with the way it is intended to be done. Not a problem, we all learn these things some time. We have a process called transclusion, which takes the content of a template and adds it to the page when it is rendered into html. When transcluding a template like {{Major African geological formations}}, one does not copy paste the contents of the navbox from one page to another. This has the disadvantage of isolating that version from the master copy, and if the master template is updated, the pasted version will be out of date. Unfortunately I am an old school editor and know the source editing system much, much better than Visual Editor, which I think you probably have used, so don't know how to explain how to do the templates correctly in VE, but am pinging WhatamIdoing who is likely to be able to help you more efficiently. In source editor we would just type in the code {{Major African geological formations}} in the right place, which incidentally, is below the See also section, and the software does the rest. Geology of Southern Africa is one of my peripheral interests, so if you need any help with coding problems feel free to give me a shout. Cheers, · · · Peter (Southwood) (talk): 17:09, 14 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Oh, yes, it's very easy. Don't copy the navigational box ("navbox") itself. First, you need to find out the name of the navbox you want. Peter says this one is called "Major African geological formations". Then, in the visual editor, put your cursor where you want it to end up, and go to the menu to Insert > Template. It'll ask for the name, and you type (or paste) the name in. Click the button to "add template" when you've found the correct one in the list of search results, and then the blue button to "Insert" it into the page. (If it's not in the right spot, you can drag it to the place you want later.)
We use this system (putting in the name of the central copy, rather than a copy of the current version) so that people can change the central version and have everything update easily at all the copies.
It sounds like you're doing some good work. Thanks for your contributions! WhatamIdoing (talk) 19:29, 14 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
