welcome back[edit]

Hey, welcome back!! -- Lost(talk) 05:26, 16 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hey. Welcome back. I thought you were out till October. Here's an update on the INCOTW front. There wasn't much happening on that front till this week. Hardly any interest in INCOTW. So, I changed the rule of only stubs allowed after some discussion with others. I also made a post on INWNB asking people to spend some more time at INCOTW, hence so much interest in the current week. If you want I can continue updating INCOTW. That's it from me. Once again, welcome back. - Aksi_great (talk) 07:47, 16 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Re:AWB[edit]

Hi Ganesh, I was trying to start from all articles under Category:India. I got to a list of some articles. Then in the second option table, I wrote {{WP India}} for the talk page. But didnt really succeed.

But for the articles already having one of the POI or HOI tags, I think I am succeeding partly. I am managing to add the WP India template but how do I remove the older template? Thanks for helping -- Lost(talk) 06:21, 17 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Also I am assessing the unassessed articles right now. Please have a look at some of them and let me know if the assessments match with yours. I wouldnt want to make any wrong assessments -- Lost(talk) 06:23, 17 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. I will try the AWB once I am through with the assessments. Will get back to you if it doesnt turn out. I have a request. Can the bot add the entire template as shown at Wikipedia:WikiProject India/Project banner. It makes my task much easier while assessing -- Lost(talk) 06:42, 17 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks!! -- Lost(talk) 06:58, 17 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Ganesh, another thing, Category:India maps was deleted on 17 August as having no content. I think it should be recreated. Lots of maps of India exist now. I noticed the red link on WP:IND and thought I'd let you know. -- Lost(talk) 07:00, 17 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Fair use rationale for Image:Annadurai and rajagopalachari.jpg[edit]

Warning sign This file may be deleted.

Thanks for uploading Image:Annadurai and rajagopalachari.jpg. I notice the 'image' page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any fair use images lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Hi Ganesh, can you run the bot for the History of India articles next? Assessing politics articles is getting very monotonous. Thanks :) -- Lost(talk) 14:56, 18 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The names are not fully translated. Use the current translations for now. Start with the districts first. Let's ask the wikipedians about the other places. Using GaneshBot in Bengali wikipedia[edit]

Hi Ganesh, I noticed that your bot has successfully created a lot of articles on Indian cities. In Bengali wikipedia, we badly lack such articles. From some contributors from West Bengal, we got articles on West Bengali cities, but the rest of India are missing.

So, I'm requesting your help in creating articles automatically. I can help you with the templates in Bengali script. Please drop me a message and let me know how we can use your bot in creating these missing articles.

Thanks a lot.

WP India[edit]

Hello Ganesh. A lot of nice India-related portals are coming up. I was wondering if we could include them too within the "portal" option of {{WP India}}?-- thunderboltz(Deepu) 07:42, 20 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi! I noticed that you added a new attribute to accommodate the Kerala portal. What I had in mind was something similar to this. See it in use here. This can prevent the template from becoming cumbersome with too many portal listings. Comments?-- thunderboltz(Deepu) 08:12, 23 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
On second thought, please ignore my suggestion. It might be better to use individual attributes for each portal, considering that it is highly unlikely for an article to belong to more than two portals.-- thunderboltz(Deepu) 03:34, 25 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

HOI[edit]

Great thanks. I will start with the assessments. Also could you figure out how to put the WP India tag on the articles which currently do not have any project templates? I was unable to do that. Thanks -- Lost(talk) 07:22, 20 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

And who would be the right people for cities/districts/states. I know you and Nichalp should be two. Anyone else? -- Lost(talk) 08:11, 20 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Great idea. I have seen Kingbotk add bio tags based on the stub/infobox templates on the article page -- Lost(talk) 18:21, 21 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Not a prob[edit]

Ah, if I had known you were an adminstrator I'd have let you roll back the edits yourself! ;)

In any case, yes I can understand your frustration. Perhaps if Betacommand and Cyde are willing to open a dialogue with you as to what is possible with the bot code then maybe the template idea placed on the talkpage of the cat would work out.

If it had been 1000 articles though we'd have found a way to use a bot to replace it (or done it by hand, I've certainly done that many boring edits in a row). :) Syrthiss 20:56, 20 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

If not, can you please delete the category. Thanks -- Lost(talk) 19:09, 23 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

what a nice request[edit]

yes like to help. I looked a little bit and found that some article already exist. I am not admin and cannot merge. I think the towns and cities can be moved to "Name, Statename" , e.g. Bidar, Karnataka. IMO your great work should be moved very fast to article spave to avoid double creations. Tobias Conradi (Talk) 22:41, 24 September 2006 (UTC) why shall I move if you restore? http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=User:Ganeshbot/sandbox/Bhadravati&action=history Tobias Conradi (Talk) 22:45, 24 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

ah, you are right. forgot that cross namespace is unwanted. but then it is harder to see what exist already and what not. I will look again. Tobias Conradi (Talk) 22:56, 24 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Comma is _much_ more common for cities/towns/villages. Overview should be at WP:NC:CITY. I am not sure whether comma is really the best, since in general dab is done with brackets. But it has the advantage that one can guess the article is about a settlement. Also avoids conflicts with taluks. I today also saw "X (Indian city)" which is absoultly minority. Can't remember that I have seen this before. Also India is so big that I think the state names are much better than "X, India". Tobias Conradi (Talk) 23:05, 24 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Across country is comma too. IIRC it was only the idea of one person or so, to do it different for India, i.e. to use brackets for X (India). AFAIK no other country uses this. Nevertheless, because India is so big, I favor using the state in the dab, not India. Tobias Conradi (Talk) 23:14, 24 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Ah, I see, these "not created" articles are all existing allready. Cant the strike and tl procedure be done by the bot? We could put something more easy in the list and let the bot do the details. Tobias Conradi (Talk) 23:27, 24 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Oh yes, the cat is much better then the list. So maybe update the list intro and point everybody to the cats. If the list is needed at all, it could be updated by the bot? Tobias Conradi (Talk) 23:44, 24 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

"Kadayanallur is a city and a municipality" - what is a municipality in the context of Subdivisions of India? Tobias Conradi (Talk) 23:49, 24 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I added some municipality stuff to Subdivisions of India. Maybe you can have a short look.

Kadayanallur is merged. Pls have a look. For tl and : no bot is need. But maybe for your not-created list, if you need the list.

I did [2] which is closer to MoS:DP - one link per line. For a redlink a second link would be ok. Tobias Conradi (Talk) 00:36, 25 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I got a little distracted because I was confused by all the subdivisions and which district merged where and was renamed when, etc. I started: Category:Subdivisions of British India. The Subdivisions of India now also include a historic section and I added some translations (bihag, zilla). Maybe you know some more. Sun will rise soon, so I go to bed now. Hi Ganesh,

I see that you and the rest have been doing a great job keeping Wikipedia up-to-date about India. I have only recently started using it and trying to contribute back. I've been going through pages starting with the oldest and trying to contribute.

Yes, I would be interested in working on India-related pages. In fact, a lot of my contributions have been those pages. I've been trying to fix errors, especially with formatting & editing the writing.

Thanks. Kumar Skumarla 03:36, 25 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the help with Bengali wikipedia[edit]

Hi Ganesh, Thank you a LOT for your help with the database and the bot code for Indian cities. I have now modified it to create Bengali language articles, and also fixed the number issue (i.e. added a function to do the numeral replacements).

Right now, we are doing a translation of the city/district names. We decided to start with West Bengal as we have some editors from West Bengal who can write the correct Bengali spelling of the city names. Once I get that done, I hope to run the bot and generate the articles.

Thanks once again for sharing the information with us.

bot[edit]

Hi Ganesh, this is regarding our discussion about a bot account. I was trying to read up stuff about bots and it seems that User:Kingbotk is doing just the work that we would like to. From what I could gather, we just need a plugin similar to the ones here. But since I dont have any idea about how bots work, I will need your help to get started. Mahawiki[edit]

Hi dear Admin,

This is to bring to your notice the wiki-feud I've been having with User:Mahawiki for almost one month now. It started with the Belgaum page which went to mediation, warnings were handed out to both parties, and when Mahawiki's incivil ways continued, Admin:Bluyugen handed him a warning and then a block. Find that here.

I do not want to turn the clock back and go through all those content disputes again. Infact, I dont want to present to you the details of any content dispute we've had. All I want to present to you is the brazen incivility and personal attacks being committed by User:Mahawiki either in the course of his content disputes or even simply just out of spite.

All the diffs(exhibiting his incivility and personal attacks) I provide below are from AFTER, I REPEAT, "AFTER". ADMIN BLUGYUEN INTERVENED, WARNED ALL OF US, BLOCKED MAHAWIKI AND SAID [THIS].

Please find below dozens of instances of blatant incivility and personal attacks by User:Mahawiki either on me or on User:Dineshkannambadi and all Kannadigas in general. His remarks are in extremely bad taste and counterproductive resulting in undermining of the good faith efforts of the other editors to carry on editing their articles.

While I dont want to go into each and every diff and explain it, just to give you a sample of his incivility, he has made edits where, even if only in jest or sarcasm, he makes atrocious claims like, I am on a kill Mahawiki mission, that User:Dineshkannambadi is the Kannada (Bin) Laden(sic). In another edit, even if only for jest(which I certainly dont find amusing nor appreciate esp., when it comes from him), he has threatened to sue me. He has called us cultural TERRORISTS, losers, notorious, shameless etc., etc. He uses the word vandalism like one would use 'Hi' and 'Hello'.

Find all the above and much much much more in the diffs I've provided below. Whats worse is his antics are going unchecked because Admin:Blugyen who knows about our feud is on a wikibreak and Admin:Sundar whose intervention I've sought more than once, is busy with other things(I presume, in real life) - which ofcourse, I dont hold against either of them.

But wikipedia will be a poorer place if brazen incivility like this goes unchecked for weeks simply because many admins dont know about it or the ones who know are by force of circumstances, too busy to deal with it.

I request immediate and harsh action on Mahawiki.

Once again, let me remind everyone that in the links below, none of them pertain to any content disputes. I belive in dealing with the content disputes on the relevant talk pages and dont usually bring it out on user talk pages.

Infact, I have even not listed below, the atrocious claim he made a couple of days ago that I had deleted and later undeleted an article. Also not listed below is his blatant removal of {{fact}} tags I had added in a couple of articles without even clarifying or providing a citation for the claim which I had tagged. Also not listed below may be umpteen other instances of incivility and npa violations on his part that I might have missed.

All the diffs below deal purely and only with his brazen incivil comments and personal attacks not just on me, but on User:Dineshkannambadi and also highly respected historians like Mr. Suryanath Kamath et al(who have been cited in some articles by Dinesh) whom he has trashed and dismissed in the most uncivil manner possible.

Apart from this he also makes disparaging remarks on Karnataka and Karnataka politicians who he keeps claiming are oppressing and torturing Marathi speaking people in Belgaum. This is not a content dispute, this is plain nonsense and insanely belligerent language.

His incivility apart, he has made it a habit and a routine to go around all over wikipedia branding me and Dinesh as 'Kannadi' vandals bent on Kannadizing all articles we touch. Ask him if we have included any uncited material or if we has ever cited any references for his numerous claims or whether he has taken it up on the article talk page instead of on a random user talk page. His answer will be negative. And yet, that doesnt stop him from going around shouting that we have been vandalising articles!!

Anway, I dont want to veer this towards the 'content disputes' which is a whole different matter altogether. Content disputes can always be discussed and agreements reached. Let me present to you just his brazen incivility and personal attacks.

Here we go -

Party Color templates with shortnames[edit]

Sorry Ganesh, but with {{Election box candidate with party link}} it is not possible because according to it we need to make color templates with full name. Just have a look and analyze. The template is associated with many parties, so it is not possible to make changes in template itself. What you wanted to say, I have experimented with the template also but did not get succeed. This template is associated with many Lok Sabha constituencies, so replacing it with another template would be difficult. If any more suggestions you have, then please tell me. I will try else we will have to make either two templates (one with shortname and other for fullname) or replace the shortname templates with full name to avoid redundant templates. Mayiladuthurai Entry[edit]

Dear Ganesh, This is Koteshwar from Ongara Ashram, Chennai. Santhosham.

I recently happened to view the Wikipedia page on Mayiladuthurai. I have been associated with Mayiladuthurai for over 3 years now - I traveled there on several occasions to gather details on the 21 saints who lived thereabouts. My Guru Swamy Ongarananda (who himself grew up in Mayiladuthurai) compiled these life histories of the saints in a 450 page book, which was released by Dharmapuram Mutt Adheenam on Sep 15, 2006 in Mayiladuthurai itself.

The fact that I mentioned the book, Mayiladuthurai Mahangal, on the Wikipedia page, was with the earnest desire that net users who browse this page learn of the numerous saints who lived here and the vast tomes of teachings they have left for us. Mayiladuthurai is indeed a special place for siddhars and this book does contain concrete evidence in the form of photographs, sculptures, documents, palm leaf scripts etc. to reinforce this claim.

With regard to your comment that this is 'book promotion' - well, this is Swamiji's 45th spiritual book over 30 years and we hardly are in need of such 'promotion' stunts. The rich spiritual legacy of Mayiladuthurai is there for everyone to claim and I have borne witness to sacred footprints that the saints have left on its soil over the centuries.

Its only to transmit this message worldwide that I made this entry. Please re-consider whether you have it edit it again.

One other thing - Mayiladuthurai Parabrahma Sadguru Siddhar Swamigal, an illustrious saint - lived over two decades in mayiladuthurai and attained Siddhi there. was honoured on His Birth Centenary in 2004 by a commemorative stamp release by the Department of Posts, Govt.of India. Placing him alongside other important citizens of Mayiladuthurai (both living and past) would indeed be appropriate, I guess.

Hi, I just wanted to thank you for helping me this morning. I must admit I was a bit upset because of that accusation. I think a new user shouldn't be treated like this. By the way, what does "ArbCom probation" mean? Does that mean he's some sort of known miscreant? LOL, this place sure has lots of weird nooks and crannies, like "user-checks" or "requests for comments". I'll have a lot to learn. But I hope the dispute at the article itself is more or less solved now. FellFairy 17:29, 30 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Mokele-mbembe[edit]

Hi. I was just working on move requests, and saw the request for Mokele-mbembe, which I'd looked at a couple of times over the last few days, and was thinking of moving. I then failed to notice that you had relisted it, and didn't see that you had until I'd completed the move. I wasn't trying to overrule you, so much as just a bit unobservant there. Since the requester had posted their reason for requesting the move on the talk page, and nobody had objected, and the reason seemed good and source-based, and held up to inspection, I figured it was fine, and if someone objects, we could discuss it then. If you'd like, I'll revert myself. -GTBacchus(talk) 09:36, 30 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Yo - it certainly seems strange to see the faces of otherwise familiar people - can you point out Gurubrahma and Sundar in the mix? I also suggest you merge or delete the newsalert I created - no point in duplicating efforts. Will help regularly. Rama's arrow 01:28, 2 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I thank you. I would like to name all. However, unless the person/s who is/are in the picture may offer to be identified, it does not look nice on my part to name anyone. --Bhadani 02:40, 2 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
No, no. Let them be there. I think that others who are there would come and add their names. Happy Vijaya Dashmi. --Bhadani 03:03, 2 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I have proposed a new stub to sort out the articles in {{India-culture-stub}} and other categories, Wikipedia:WikiProject Stub sorting/Proposals/2006/September. Perhaps you could support it? IrfanAli 13:55, 2 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Ganeshbot on Hindi[edit]

Hello Ganesh, I remember you preparing to use Ganeshbot on the Hindi wiki awhile ago. Has it gone off the radar? It doesn't matter you have forgotten about it considering it works on so many Indian language wikis already. I just hope that eventually you'll have the time to set it up. Best wishes. GizzaChat ©

Rajshahi PR[edit]

Hi Ganesh - just wanted to let you know upfront that I've removed the link to RajshahiU's PR from India collaborations. As the university was founded in 1953, it has no connection with India. Rama's arrow 20:52, 3 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi.... Replies to ur request[edit]

Thank u for complimenting me on my contributions. Regarding ur request for merging articles created by Ganeshbot.. ya, I would be interested in doing them. Also, about joining the India project, am not sure whether I can contribute regularly. But if the project can include sometimes active members, then I am ready to join. thank you ill drop by and add some contributes and so on,

Noticeboard[edit]

Hi, thanks for pointing out that the noticeboard is new and may not stay. It turns out that the warning that I wished to give was premature anyway, so it is no loss. It was not clear to me if you were suggesting that I comment at the AfD page. I will do so if you desire. However, I feel that the decision should be made primarily be administrators. Since I am not an administrator, I am reluctant to just jump in and give an unsolicited opinion. --BostonMA 01:37, 5 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your note, mate[edit]

Thanks for your note, Ganesh. I am looking fwd to contribute as much as I can w.r.to India and related topics as I have mentioned :-) Sudharsansn 02:27, 5 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Re:Gandhi[edit]

Hi - this is propaganda. I suggest you take firm action against this editor if he/she continues to slop such nonsense. Rama's arrow 15:19, 5 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Veerapandi, Theni[edit]

Is that the source for the entire article? I got what was going on for the demographic information, but there is also geographic information that needs to be sourced. If you'd rather go with the "fact" template in the places where unsourced information exists, that's fine. Erechtheus 05:02, 6 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

That works for me. Removed. Good luck with your editing. Erechtheus 05:09, 6 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Great[edit]

Ganesh, great to see that bot created content has been merged into existing articles for all towns in Himachal and TN. By the way, please start running the bot in Tamil Wiki when you're free. -- Sundar \talk \contribs 05:31, 6 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I've sent you the mapping by email. Waiting for action. :) -- Sundar \talk \contribs 06:35, 6 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Ganesh, are there any other states on which merging work has to be done? The Silent Contributor 10:32, 6 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

question[edit]

Hi Ganesh - not to intrude, but I noticed your block of the new editor at India. Was it really warranted? I mean were his edits really vandalism? Rama's arrow 01:32, 8 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hmmm... I understand your reasoning, but I do disagree with the block because (a) I think blocks are partly punitive (in any case people see it that way) and this user is far too much a newbie. Also (b) his edits were not disruptive or damaging to the article quality - the pics absolutely not, and the Christianity thing could have been talked off or simply reverted (far more serious contentions are placed at GWB and Gandhi). (c) I remember I was like this dude - I dumped a lot of info into articles in my first days. I think the block will have a negative effect on him. Rama's arrow 03:03, 8 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Basically he might be turned off from editing altogether as I'm sure he doesn't understand why his edits were seen as disruptive. Rama's arrow 03:04, 8 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Wiki project NCSLC[edit]

Hi Ganesh, The reason I wanted to create one for this is because there are over 70 available articles and almost 50 more articles required to be created and these come exclusively under the banner of the Sri Lankan Ethnic crisis. I felt that this would be a more apt one than Project Sri Lanka, as that might also include tourism and other related info which might eventually tarnish the national image of Sri Lanka as JUST a war-torn nation. Let me know what you think? I could probably rephrase the name to something else like 'Sri Lanka Monitor' or 'Sri Lanka journal' or something on those lines.

Could you tell me how to proceed from here and how to go about it as a systematic action plan? Thanks for your help.Sudharsansn 09:01, 8 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks![edit]

Thanks for this; I'm not sure what I did to tick him off, but thanks. — riana_dzasta wreak havoc-damage report 06:42, 9 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Lol! I was hoping you wouldn't notice... I saw the level 1 headline below me, thought that the headers below were part of an ongoing conversation, so I didn't want to confuse you. Then I realise I was being an idiot, but didn't want to keep annoying you by reverting myself. Now I'm embarrassed :D — riana_dzasta wreak havoc-damage report 06:51, 9 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Raja Yoga controversy[edit]

Dear Hinduism Project editors,

There is a controversy on the Hinduism regarding Raja Yoga. Please read the debate on the Hinduism discussion page. Your comments are requested on the Hinduism discussion page to help resolve the controversy. Thank you. HeBhagawan 14:57, 8 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Request regarding Template:WP India[edit]

Could you please add a new parameter for the west bengal portal in {{WP India}}, a la Kerala portal? Please see this talk where DeepuJoseph reminded me of this aspect. Regards.--Dwaipayan (talk) 15:27, 8 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Lucknow[edit]

As suggested removed Lucknow from {{peerreview}} and added to INCOTW. Perhaps you could vote for it. IrfanAli 15:46, 8 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Ganeshbhai, you're too kind. I really appreciate this medal and the sentiment behind it. Many thanks, and lemme know whenever I can be of assistance. Rama's arrow 20:27, 8 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

WikiProject[edit]

Hey, thanx for creating the WikiPoject on Maharashtra. Now, we can get ready to work. --NRS | T/M\B 03:45, 9 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you[edit]

Thanks so much for the barnstar and the words. They mean a lot! I'm not so sure I'm that fast, but if someone feels I'm expedient about counter-vandalism, then I guess I might be doing something right. Again, I really appreciate it. Please also feel free to let me know whenever you come across a situation that needs CV help. -- Omicronpersei8 (talk) 04:37, 9 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
