Oh my YES that page needed archiving! I was wondering if you have any objections to my changing the archiving-code to one that uses days instead of the form you just placed there? Something like...

March Madness 2017

G'day all, please be advised that throughout March 2017 the Military history Wikiproject is running its March Madness drive. This is a backlog drive that is focused on several key areas:

  • tagging and assessing articles that fall within the project's scope
  • updating the project's currently listed A-class articles to ensure their ongoing compliance with the listed criteria
  • creating articles that are listed as "requested" on the project's various task force pages or other lists of missing articles.

As with past Milhist drives, there are points awarded for working on articles in the targeted areas, with barnstars being awarded at the end for different levels of achievement.

The drive is open to all Wikipedians, not just members of the Military history project, although only work on articles that fall (broadly) within the military history scope will be considered eligible. More information can be found here for those that are interested, and members can sign up as participants at that page also.

The drive starts at 00:01 UTC on 1 March and runs until 23:59 UTC on 31 March 2017, so please sign up now.

Ah, my sample size was off: as the few of these that were on my watchlist happened to be removals. Thanks for the clarification! Easy Company Commanders

Dick Winters in his autobiography makes clear references to the chain of command of Easy Company. At no point was an “unnamed officer” mentioned. Even the timeline doesn’t fit. If Winters gets moved on October 9th, Heyliger is in temporary command and gets shot on October 31st. When would have this mysterious officer been in charge? I think you are misreading BoB.

“I moved to Battalion on October 9th to assume my new duties as Battalion Executive Officer to Lt. Col Strayer …. First Lieutenant Fred Heyliger, temporarily in command of the company served as patrol leader…..Heyliger did an absolutely superb job and all Allied soldier were safely returned to friendly lines on the night of October 22….. On October 31, I called 1st Lieutenant Heyliger on the telephone and suggest that at night two us make an inspection of Easy Company… “Beyond of Brothers”, Maj. Dick Winters, pg 151-152

WP:SOLDIER is an essay

WP:SOLDIER is an essay. Notability essays are very useful for establishing consistent criteria for subjects that may fall under WP:MILL, but they can't be applied in a vacuum. WP:BASIC is the applicable guideline that should be being considered for BoB biographies, because the depth of coverage is (on average) deeper than for your average WWII biography and a given article is likely going to meet BASIC before it meets the prescriptive criteria at SOLDIER. This isn't a complaint about the nomination at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/William Kiehn or similar, but a broader suggestion on how these articles should be evaluated and their AfD nominations, if applicable, communicated. True, but it's been accepted by the Wikipedia:WikiProject Military history community for some time. Acceptance by a Wikiproject is not relevant. This is specifically addressed at WP:CONLIMITED: For instance, unless they can convince the broader community that such action is right, participants in a WikiProject cannot decide that some generally accepted policy or guideline does not apply to articles within its scope. The specific example you give of a poor "keep" reasoning can be more effectively argued against in the context of WP:BASIC. VQuakr (talk) 20:48, 23 March 2017 (UTC)

2017 Military Historian of the Year and Newcomer of the Year nominations and voting

User group for Military Historians

Greetings,

"Military history" is one of the most important subjects when speak of sum of all human knowledge. To support contributors interested in the area over various language Wikipedias, we intend to form a user group. It also provides a platform to share the best practices between military historians, and various military related projects on Wikipedias. An initial discussion was has been done between the coordinators and members of WikiProject Military History on English Wikipedia. Now this discussion has been taken to Meta-Wiki. Thanks. I'll check in a couple of days, then. I've been doing quite a bit of work on US Army Field Artillery units- particularly the ARNG right now. Some are out there, but not categorized; some just don't exist. In general, a person, organization or product added to a list should have a pre-existing article before being added to most lists. If you wish to create such an article, please first confirm that the subject qualifies for a separate, stand-alone article according to Wikipedia's notability guideline. To be on a notable alumni list, a person needs to have or qualify to have a biographical article about them on Wikipedia. If a person's name is redirected to an article about a group they are part of, that's pretty solid evidence that they themselves are not notable by our policy. Thank you for taking care of this. There was a discussion at Wikipedia talk:Linter#De-linting old signatures on this very topic. Bronze Star

Hey, just wanted to give you a heads up I found more citations for the bronze star medal. It's not awarded by DOD (that was my bad) but rather by the military departments, which I added with citations. I wasn't able to find anything about it being awarded by the Public Health Service, but if you had any information or news articles on that I'd really appreciate if you could send those my way so I can find the regulation documents! Quick question

Hi, I noticed on your user page it says you're 70+. Just curious about how you became interested in Wikipedia and how you learned about it in the first place. I've worked with older folks most of my life and none of them have a nice thing to say about Wikipedia, or some of them just don't know about it, so that is why I'm curious. I'm also a retired database developer and back when LOST was on I got involved in the Lostpedia project (before it was on Wikia). Long time, no cross paths

I had recently dropped Connor from my watchlist (he's back on now) because I thought this had died in someone's in box. The URL works but the document is an image instead of searchable text.   • Hey, I made an edit and you disagreed with it and undid it. No big deal. I happen to think that biographical articles shouldn’t be considered military articles under the current wording of the guideline. That’s my opinion. But saying I have “One answer for dates” sounds like an insult, a slight, and an attempt to discredit my opinion. It’s okay to disagree. We all have opinions on how things should be done and how guidelines should be interpreted. I’ll just sit back and wait until consensus changes on this matter. I have a list of BoB "franchise" individuals whose AfDs I am pretty sure I would not oppose. I thought I would pass it along so that if you are still planning on more AfDs, the process goes more smoothly. You can, of course, not propose an individual in this list, propose an individual not in this list, or whatever you like. But since I made such a list for myself, I thought it would be helpful for you:

Thanks for the note; I know we've been in opposition for some of this. The names seem pretty close to my thoughts. My "project list" is at User:Gaarmyvet/sandbox#Band_of_Brothers. Guys who sadly never made it home (Penkala, et. al.) are candidates. Others might be considered except for the way they were treated. Norman Dike, imho, was a hatchet job (I do have a time investment there). I think there's more to Herbert Sobel than meets the eye; somehow he made lieutenant colonel (not WP:SOLDIER, but...) I may need to try for access to Wikipedia:Newspapers.com. Please do look up anyone I propose; I'm not trying to play WP:OWNER here. I was editing Robert Burr Smith earlier. That is great. It is pretty clear to me that you are doing good work. Let me know if I can be of any help, especially with research. Do you have access to Wikipedia:Fold3? I assumed you did, but then realized you might not. I'm not sure how much of the stuff on Fold3 isn't available elsewhere, and a lot of the material are in the form of primary sources, but it is often useful. I just wanted to follow up to thank you for your continued work on these. I !voted against delete on the most recent one Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Alton More, but only barely and we'll see what the consensus is. Most importantly, I want to thank you again for stringing these out. Expressing a bit of exasperation, User:Hawkeye7 rightfully asked how many more of these there are, but I do appreciate the AfD submissions coming at a reasonable rate so I have time to try to fix them up. Also, I don't want to presume, but if you think a AfD case (for any US historical biography) is borderline enough, feel free to drop me a line and if I think the subject shouldn't go to AfD I'll try to add refs and content. Looking at your sandbox, do you really only have 3/4 more BoB figures to consider for AfD? Congratulations on your work! Even if I'm not fully on board with the project, you're effort and the quality of your contributions to the articles (even those which have been deleted) have been impressive and enjoyable to follow. I looked at the forthcoming ones and saw that Guth has a good deal of coverage at newspapers.com, so I went ahead and contributed to the article (feel free to cleanup and, if you think useful, to nominate for discussion). Right now, I think I would !vote keep or weak keep at his AfD if it were nominated. Tipper also has a lot of results at newspapers.com, but they are almost all his obituary. I'm not sure how I feel about obituaries of long-lived veterans being used for judgement of suitability. I guess I see living a long time as somewhat independent of being a part of the BoB-verse, and thus I'm on the fence if/how I'd !vote for him. I've already commented on the Blithe AfD, and I'm not sure about a potential Lyall AfD, but I didn't find enough on him at newspapers.com to want to add anything to the article. Thanks for the note. It's almost over, at least for now. I may revisit some of the "no consensus" pages but not until next year. I'll definitely take a look at what you've added. Lyall's escape in what was Indochina would be a lot more interesting if there was some relationship to the global flow of events. Obituaries have always been a little iffy to me because of a kind of "COI" from family members who want the deceased to be remembered well. When I cited Norman Dike's obits so often, I kept waiting for someone to tell me I'd wandered off the reservation. Overcome by events since that AfD passed! Hi again, Gaarmyvet. Just wanted to give you a heads up. As I write this, it hasn't been officially announced, but apparently the President called Mrs. Conner yesterday and awarded Lt. Conner the Medal of Honor. This was posted by family members on Facebook. I predict there will certainly be some new interest in the WP article with a possible deluge of new edits! Changing ASIN links

I noticed that you have replaced a number of cite templates that used the asin parameter to instead use Amazon URLs. I don't understand why you are doing this. Can you explain? Daask (talk) 00:30, 20 April 2018 (UTC)

Oh, I think I figured out what is going on. It looks like you're trying to empty Category:CS1 maint: ASIN uses ISBN. Thanks for your effort to do some of this kind of background maintenance for Wikipedia. However, I think I'd like to suggest different actions:
  1. If an ASIN is an ISBN, then it should be marked as such, and no ASIN or URL given, contrary to what you did here, for example.
  2. If ISBN is given, then the ASIN should just be removed, not converted to a URL, as described at Category:CS1 maint: ASIN uses ISBN, contrary to what you did here, for example.
  3. Some ASINs aren't ISBNs, and I think it is best to leave them as ASINs and not convert them to URLs, as someone reverted you here, for example.
