Managing a conflict of interest[edit]

Information icon Hello, Evanroden1. We welcome your contributions, but if you have an external relationship with the people, places or things you have written about on the page Youth Coalition for Organ Donation, you may have a conflict of interest (COI). Editors with a conflict of interest may be unduly influenced by their connection to the topic. See the conflict of interest guideline and FAQ for organizations for more information. We ask that you:

  • avoid editing or creating articles about yourself, your family, friends, colleagues, company, organization or competitors;
  • propose changes on the talk pages of affected articles (you can use the {{request edit}} template);
  • disclose your conflict of interest when discussing affected articles (see Wikipedia:Conflict of interest#How to disclose a COI);
  • avoid linking to your organization's website in other articles (see WP:Spam);
  • do your best to comply with Wikipedia's content policies.

In addition, you are required by the Wikimedia Foundation's terms of use to disclose your employer, client, and affiliation with respect to any contribution which forms all or part of work for which you receive, or expect to receive, compensation. See Wikipedia:Paid-contribution disclosure.

Also, editing for the purpose of advertising, publicising, or promoting anyone or anything is not permitted. Thank you. – robertsky (talk) 08:59, 24 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for reaching out. I believe my page shows I have a connection to The Youth Coalition for Organ Donation (I believe I added a tag). I was very careful in writing the page, though, to avoid making it seem like an advert (I just included everything relevant). Evanroden (talk) 09:00, 24 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Why were images nominated for deletion? They're all Creative Commoms licensed and we're uploaded to Wikimedia under that disclosure. Evanroden (talk) 09:03, 24 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Evanroden, your disclosure to a page that is self-titled. I was very careful in writing the page, though, to avoid making it seem like an advert (I just included everything relevant). unfortunately not, apparently. the article as it was then, could have be deleted immediately for unambiguous advertising if I had chosen to tag the article for speedy deletion instead. As for the images, there wasn't a clear copyright release when I visited the organisation website. Apparently the reviewing admin may have thought so too as they usually don't delete if they had saw otherwise when they review the deletion request.
Also why are you using 2 accounts? Stick to one. See: Wikipedia:Multiple accounts. – robertsky (talk) 14:27, 24 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I only have one account, I think? Unless I have a different username in Wikimedia? Evanroden (talk) 19:56, 24 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Evanroden, There are two accounts with edits here: Evanroden and Evanroden1. Evanroden1 has also edits on commons. Beyond certain legitimate uses, there is no need to create multiple accounts as there is a single user login setup across all wikimedia project sites, i.e. en.wp and commons share the same login information. You might want to stick to using a single account and declare the other account abandoned, before someone accuses you of being a sock master/puppet. – robertsky (talk) 20:15, 24 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Okay, sorry about that! I didn't realize I was signed in on two accounts. Evanroden (talk) 20:40, 24 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the reminder! I've been pretty careful, avoiding doing anything against that rule, and I've been transparent about my identity, including a COI tag on my account. Is there anything else I can do differently? Or just refrain from editing any pages mentioning me at all? Obviously I like editing pages that mention me, assuming I add the appropriate tags. Evanroden1 (talk) 19:53, 11 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Evan. You seem like a great guy who is doing good advocacy work. However, you should know that the Wikipedia community strongly disapproves of editing with a COI, no matter how good the intention. That's doubly true when editors write about themselves. You're not going to get good reactions here writing an autobiography or writing about an organization you co-founded. Your actions will be under heavy scrutiny, editors may characterize you or your edits in an unkind or hurtful way, and administrators will be less tolerant of minor violations of policy (like accidentally using multiple accounts, as robertsky mentioned above). It's best if you find other subjects to work on. Best, Jfire (talk) 01:23, 22 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I put a lot of time and effort into writing an unbiased, non-rule-breaking article after reading through all of the documentation regarding autobiographies (which seem to be allowed, but highly discouraged). I totally expect the scrutiny and other editors modifying the page to say… less than kind thing about me.
I’m done with those articles and had planned to let the rest of the community edit it for the next few months/years until it was unrecognizable enough that the autobiog tag could be removed.
However, I do feel like I should object to the deletion nomination, though, but I honestly don’t have the background to make sure I’m doing it correctly. I don’t even see the deletion page for The YCOD, and for the one for myself, I don’t know if simply replying without making a new table is sufficient. Evanroden1 (talk) 01:41, 22 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The problem is, you haven't written unbiased, non-rule-breaking articles. It may appear that way to you, but that's the problem with COI: when you have it, it's difficult or impossible to view things neutrally and objectively. Your autobiography is likely to be deleted because it fails WP:GNG (a guideline, one type of "rule" on Wikipedia). There are several statements in Youth Coalition for Organ Donation that cannot be verified in the sources you have cited, and it's very likely to be deleted for failing WP:NORG. Jfire (talk) 01:54, 22 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I would like to point out that many of the citations for both articles are from the video news reels included, not the one/two paragraph blurb summarizing the news stories/interviews. Your chart missed that, and I tried to summarize it in my objection reply.
How would you suggest I approach this? I know you nominated them, but if you have any feedback, I’d honestly really appreciate it and I don’t have much other guidance. Evanroden1 (talk) 02:07, 22 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

My dad died this afternoon, so I’m going to log off for a couple weeks. In that time I imagine the gears will turn and a decision will be reached. Thanks again for being so helpful to someone new who might’ve edited a bit too close to the sun. Evanroden1 (talk) 02:30, 23 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
My condolences for your loss. Jfire (talk) 12:17, 24 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
