Eastern Front porject[edit]

Hi Esdrasbarnevelt. I am undertaking a larger project of filling out the Eastern Front article. In the large part this involves most of the Soviet Operations, and will include the 72 strategic Operations and about 190 smaller operational Operations (either as part of the larger strategic Operations, or in their own right). I would be greatfull for cooperating with you on any of the operations since there is no particular order in which they can be prepared.
Currently I am trying to reconcile the existing articles (written mostly from Western/German perspective) and the Soviet Operations so the articles are not duplicated. I am also trying to fill out the German/Axis Operations which are incomplete in Wiki. The thinking is that for every German offensive there was a Soviet defensive, and visa versa, but the names do not match. Others are working on the Soviet Armies and divisions (and Corps?), so eventually the Operation articles will have unit links.
So what did you have in mind for the Bagration Offensive?
In Soviet sources it is known as the Belorussian Offensive or Belorussian Strategic Offensive operation. It is composed of several operational Offensives: Витебско-Оршанская наступательная

What I wanted to do is to have a 'mother' article for the planning and objectives of the Belorussian Offensive, then links to the separate articles on the above 'daughter' Offensives, and then a summary of the outcomes of the Belorussian Offensive as a whole on the 'mother' article.

Unit titles[edit]

maps[edit]

Have a look here http://maps.poehali.org/en/catalogue/ I will propose we use these with edited graphics as required. Vilnius[edit]

Thank you! I'm hoping someone will come along and add a bit more on the Soviet role in the siege itself. There's not a whole lot written on these operations in English / translated into English, especially from the Soviet perspective. A photo or two might be helpful as well, though I haven't been able to find any as yet.

Perhaps a redirect from Vilnus Offensive Operation may be in order, since we have articles on Operation Ostra Brama and Battle of Vilnius (1944). Hi, I think my ideal solution for the article on the Vilnius Offensive Operation (the transliteration we've decided to go with) would be to write an article on the whole offensive, and then incorporate all the information in Battle of Vilnius (1944) into it as a section on the fight for the city itself. I haven't seen any confirmation of this as yet. Hastings (in Armageddon) states that Stalin "professed to the Western Allies that he had advanced the timing of [the Vistula-Oder Offensive] in order to ease their difficulties in the Bulge battle. In reality, the essential schedule of the offensive had been determined back in November. Churchill expressed allied gratitude anyway" (p.279)
You may want to quote Hastings in the article to link Western European Theatre with the Eastern. I remembered this while reading your article, but could not think of which book in my library I can find this quickly, so thought I'd ask.--mrg3105 (comms) ♠♥♦♣ 11:59, 5 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Osovets[edit]

I have looked and looked, and I have not been able to find much info. I have asked in two forums, abut not heard anything so far. Of note is that Osovets had a fortress, and apparently the notable thing about it is that the Germans had to surrender it to Soviet troops in 1939. However, I can;t find out if they made a fight for it. I do however have an OOB for Red Army for the city's liberation, and some other tidbits. Hi, have a look at Osovets Offensive Operation and see what I've been able to find so far. Not very much! A few online biographies of Soviet commanders mention the fight for the fortress and that they (or their units) distinguished themselves - so the German must have put up some kind of a fight. Eastern Front & 33rd Army (Soviet Union)[edit]

Hi Esdrasbarnevelt. Just wanted to say great work on the numerous E Front articles you've worked on. It ties in closely with my personal project, the Soviet formations on the Eastern Front. I'm currently trying to improve the quality of the 33rd Army article, which participated in several of the Op Bagration sub-offensives, so if there is any sourced text you could add to the material I've managed to round up so far, I would greatly appreciate it.
