Abbreviations

I would add some advice about the use of abbreviations. In the spirit of MOS:ABBREV, contributors should be urged to avoid abbreviations that are not common outside the field. In the past students editing Code-switching made heavy use of abbreviations such as CS and ML, which they probably picked up from Carol Myers-Scotton or others who follow her style. In addition, glossing abbreviations such as NOM, ACC, or DAT for case markers are fairly common in linguistics literature, but probably unfamiliar to many Wikipedia readers. Glossing abbreviations normally only appear within interlinearly glossed text, don't they? In this case I imagine they'll be best dealt with by the template that produces the interlinear text (something I'm working on at the moment), so that something like ACC would be rendered as either ACC or ACC. I think it will be useful to include pointers to some of the mark-up templates that it's a good practice to use, if it isn't too pedantic, like {{IPA}} or {{lang}}. Uanfala (talk) 09:36, 2 August 2016 (UTC)
