Plural of hadith[edit]

Emiellaidendiay (Melinda?),

Ahadith is the Arabic plural of hadith, but when hadith is used as an English word, hadith is usually both the singular and the plural form. One hadith, many hadith. Sometimes I see hadiths, but hadith is more usual. I have not seen ahadith used anywhere in academic writing about Islam. I've only seen it on Islamic web pages, in writing by Muslims, etc. Arabic plural formation is a deep dark mystery to most non-Arabic speakers, and it really doesn't seem right to expect non-Muslims to understand it. It's just not part of English. It may be in the future, but I'm not sure that it's right to push the usage in Wikipedia. It's surely not right to tell other people that they're wrong if they don't use the ahadith form. Zora 01:24, 12 Jun 2005 (UTC)


I recognize that the use of "hadiths" is widespread, but I tend to prefer the use of the most accurate spelling, such as "Muhammad" rather than "Mohammed," and I see this in the same way. But thanks for the feedback. Emiellaiendiay 03:28, 15 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Muhammad, prophet of Islam[edit]

Em, you've been traipsing through Wikipedia changing "the Islamic prophet Muhammad" to "Muhammad, prophet of Islam". It's a minor change of wording, but the latter form seems to imply that Muhammad IS a prophet (divine role), whereas the former implies that Muhammad is recognized as a prophet by Muslims. It sounds pompous and hieratic. In other words, it's skating close to being POV. Please don't continue with this endeavor. I understand that many Muslims engage in what seem to ME to be a panoply of verbal and written tics around the name of Muhammad, and that omitting any of these feels wrong, raw, and scandalous. I just consulted with Babjobu, who's been militant in policing Muslim expressions of piety, and he thinks I'm off-base. He thinks prophet of Islam is an acceptable variation of Islamic prophet. Hello, when you want to link to the article about something Bosnian, please do not link to Bosniab, as that is a disambiguation page (which nothing should be linked to). Instead link to the one of the options found on that page such as Bosnian language or Bosnia and Herzegovina by writing out [[Bosnia and Herzegovina|Bosnian]]. Wikipedia gets thousands of images uploaded every day, and in order to verify that the images can be legally used on Wikipedia, the source and copyright status must be indicated. Announcement: If someone requests help or feedback on an article, please try your hardest to help them out if you are able. Thank you.

Project News
  • The LGBT Portal has once again been revamped and a work rota started. Efforts towards Featured Portal status are slowly coming together.
  • The assessment system has been a great success, we have tagged over 4000 articles! Please tag any LGBT related articles you come across by adding {{LGBTProject | class=}} to the talkpage. Please see the Assessment Department for how to assess an article according to the grading system.
  • The Translation department has changed its focus, to LGBT articles about non-English topics and people on which there may be more information on the relevant foreign Wikipedia. Please add your name if you are fluent in any language other than English.
  • Jumpaclass is picking up slowly, with nine people having entered. With over 2000 stubs we need to improve our article quality. Please sign up and get it going! Challenge another user to see how far you can jump a stub!
  • There is an ongoing discussion about the current LGBT categorisation system here, here, and a little bit here. A special page has now been set up here to deal with this.
  • A Watchlist has been set up to monitor controversial and/or highly vandalised articles. It can also be used for article disputes, just add a note explaining the nature of the dispute.
  • With the influx of so many active members, there is now enough support for a LGBT studies peer review, which may be found here. It's in the beta phase at the moment, so bear with us if we make any mistakes. Feel free to peer review any articles you have been working on.
  • It was agreed this month to start reducing the uses of the Notice board, as many members felt that it was not effective. An open tasks template has been created, bringing together important announcements, FAC/FARs, Peer reviews, XfDs, the COTM, and requested articles. You may desire to watchlist it. A Deletion sorting subpage is also now working to bring together XfDs - this should be bot-driven, but we have not currently tagged enough articles to make this fully automated, so please update the list with any LGBT-related XfDs you come across.

I have seen your name listed in film wiki project. I need some help on cinematic genres and also Englsih language. Would you please take a look at the cinematic genres section at Abbas Kiarostami. I am not an expert and we want to make that section brief and compact and transfer irrelevant materials to other sections. We spent a long time on that, still far from standards. Recruiting.[edit]

Try the high-traffic articles, like homosexuality or Same-sex marriage. Although many of the users in the history are now members, others are constantly coming in. Or you can choose articles from here. You can go back about five months in the history looking for users, you just need to make sure they're still online today. A high-quality article that is notable for, well, its gayness, for want of a better word, should have some people editing it who edit LGBT articles generally. Oh yeah, I bought the DVD. It's amazing, you really should watch it - I love the impact it had on the Hassidic community. I can't wait to see In the Name of Allah, it's coming out on Channel 4 in the next few months. If we get a DVD recorder before then, I'll record it and send it to you if you like. WatchlistBot[edit]

SFBA now has a watchlist. It will be updated whenever I get around to it, usually every couple of days/once a week. Sometimes longer if I'm taking a wikibreak. Do you need any help tagging articles? The bot can easily tag all articles in tagged categories. It can also tag categories, starting at a top-level category and going through the hierarchy interactively (that is, I help it, and tell it which categories to tag). SF Bay Area: thanks[edit]

Thank you for inviting me into the Bay Area project. Sometimes at Wikipedia I feel like a little gray mouse come alive from a Beatrix Potter page, complete with apron and bonnet, scurrying around fixing the English and such. It's nice when someone notices.

I looked at the project page and, naturally, found a couple of things there to correct. I'm undecided about joining the project – not sure what doing so would accomplish. When I have time, I improve articles on local subjects, among others. Besides "Piedmont," which you saw, I gave "Golden Gate Park" a full grammatical overhaul. However, my antique browser makes some things difficult. It has particular trouble with long articles and long discussion pages. Occasionally, making a change on a long page will delete whole sections of text below the change. The computer is old, too, and loads pages slowly. Besides, I haven't learned nearly all of the Wikipedia technodetails, such as how to revert edits or cite sources, and learning what's required looks like a major task.

By the way, as of a couple of months ago, the article on Oakland badly needed editing for grammar and style. I left it as is because its length was likely to give me technical trouble. Cognita 03:25, 13 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Although my browser is relatively updated, I have dial-up Internet, which no one else has had within the last five years. You think? I had dialup until about a year and a half ago. My husband still does, but his computer is newer than mine, so we get pages about equally fast.
Is it possible for you to update your browser? It is not. This is a Mac with OS 9 and IE. To use Safari and so forth, you need OS X. Microsoft has stopped upgrading IE for Mac. I got a second browser, iCab, which was invented as a sort of bridge between OS 9 and the modern world. It handles some aspects of Wikipedia better than IE does, but it's slower. The real solution is to change to a newer computer that can accept OS X. I'll have to eventually.
If not, you could try editing sections at a time, to avoid the problems your browser finds with long articles of text. I usually do edit sections. Even then, the browser sometimes puts the next section(s) into the typing window – material I didn't ask for – and cuts some off. Evidently there's a length limit. And do you know a way to edit the top section of a long article without using the link for editing the whole article?
Another thing, which I do sometimes when my browser decides to spontaneously blank the page, or my Internet disconnects without warning, is copy and paste things into Word or WordPad to edit offline. I've done this when making extensive changes to a section (not with Word, which I don't have, but in an e-mail to myself). Those annoying disconnections happened all the time until I left EarthLink. Now I use a small regional ISP, and service is continuous. Please let me know if you decide to shop for a new ISP. This one is excellent. Cognita 07:03, 13 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
