Critic Portfolios

I noticed there was an option in the infoboxes to include portfolios would that be smart for Critic Positions in Shadow Cabinets?--Jack Cox 06:03, 28 November 2006 (UTC)

I am including Parliamentary secretary as an important job just like a cabinet minister but not like at the same level you know of the cabinet= I would guess, I think that Parliamentary Secretary is usually listed when you watch CPAC. Arrogance

I've interacted with you a few times in the past, and you always struck me as reasonable and thorough. Unlike many users who are just looking to argue, you seem knowledgeable about Wikipedia policy and interested in what's best for the Wiki. So it hurt when you called me arrogant. I've been called much worse by other users, but it didn't mean as much, since I don't really care what they think.

Hi, I felt your comments were indeed arrogant. This is because I don't think you see the full scope of what is happening. People leave Wikipedia for reasons. While they leave on their own free will, they are motivated by certain factors.

Unfortunately, your actions have been driving people away from Wikipedia. This is why it is important that we come to a solution for the betterment of the project. Please, let's see where eachother is coming from so we can stop the exodus.

The whole way in which the culling fair use images have been implemented has been detrimental to the project. People are annoyed, and are leaving, and it is discouraging newer Wikipedians. Had this policy been active since Wikipedia's beginning, I wouldn't have had a problem with it, but because it has been implemented now, we are running into severe problems. -- Earl Andrew - talk 17:31, 30 November 2006 (UTC)

List of cities in Canada

I have a suggestion...maybe at the top of each province's subsection, we should provide a brief description of that province's criteria for city status. I've occasionally considered initiating a "City status in Canada" article, similar to the one that already exists for City status in the United Kingdom, but I think it would probably be better to just give brief summaries within the list itself. Yes, well that would be mainly the same. I know curling works with teams and one team can miss out on a tournament one year and be back the year after, but they're still national teams. However, I'm planning to create these pages for the Dutch national team and in these articles there is the possibility to name the variation in the teams representing the country year by year. I don't know, but I would say why not? For me personally I am too addicted to all kind of sports and I can not focus on one sport in particular. BC elections 1952 and 1953

I seem to recall you were in the Wiki Elections project last time around and noted your name in the history on the 1952 election; I just posted a response to someone's copyvio ticket and was hoping for backup/corroboration, or at least somebody who could work the fact template so as to put in quotation marks and cite the explanation of the elimination ballot as gleaned from the Elections BC webpages (which are not, to my knowledge, copyrighted). Earl, you may want to revise the license for Image:Wikimeetup.PNG. Unfortunatelly, you can't release it to the public domains, as it contains the Wikipedia logo, which is copyrighted to the Wikimedia Foundation. And if you're not the author of the other image used in the composition, you should check it's licensing conditions to make sure both images can really be combined (if the other image is cc-by, for instance, I believe we can't combine it with the logo). Just did it. Earl, I also noted the other image used in the composition is Image:Parliament-Ottawa.jpg, which is double licensed GFDL and CC-BY-SA-2.5, both licenses also incompatible with your {{PD-self}} claim. Please, consider being more careful next time. It's actually a hard taks to create a copyright violation by composing images on commons, and it's unfortunate that it happened. Why do you keep changing Tri-Cities to Johnson City? I live in Johnson City, and there is not half a million people here. Hi. I've noticed that you've changed the name of some articles I've written about defunct Ontario townships from Placename to Placename Township. No problem, I'll name any new articles I create accordingly. However, I am a little confused about naming conventions. I used "Placename" because it seems that most current place articles go by just that, without the added "Township." Should some of these be changed to include township as well? Thanks. Replaceable fair use images I tagged a while ago

Earl Andrew, you may remember a while ago when I gave you notice that I tagged a few replaceable images you uploaded for speedy deletion. I was thinking and, it may not mean anything to you, but I'm sorry I did that. I probably should not have tagged them for speedy deletion since you uploaded in 2005. I don't mean to say that I think the images should have continued being used, but I think I should have notified you of a formal IFD. Because IFD is a centralized page, people would have been able to easily comment on whether or not they thought the images should be deleted. I am now beginning to think that, because of the opportunity for centralized discussion, this process is more appropriate to consider older images. Your maps

Once again, I'd like to compliment you on your election-result maps. They look great.

The last thing I want to do is discourage you. However, I do recommend that in the future you consider cutting down on the number of colours. I would recommend that you use no more than two colours for each party. Another idea, if you're really set on using four colours for each party, might be to use shades of red, blue and yellow rather than mess with teal or anything like that.

You might want to look at the map in today's National Post of the election results. It's very simple, using black, grey and white for the three parties. But the message is very clear as soon as you look at it. Your maps are far more attractive but take some staring at to gather what they're trying to say. There's a give-and-take between clarity and the amount of information provided. Considering the great amount of detail available in the text, it might be worthwhile to move a bit toward the side of simplicity.

I just put Pat Ryan in google and the executive came first. In fact, aside from the contested wikipedia address, the curler is not on the first page of the google search. He is a world champion in a minor sport the executive founded a fortune 500 company as well as serves as Chairman of the Chicago 2016 Olympic bid committee. Whoa whoa whoa, I am NOT backing down on the Sundin-Alfredsson comparison, although Sundin is getting older and Alfredsson happens to be in his prime... I have a hated respect for Alfredsson, I loved his fake-throwing the stick jab at Sundin from a while back, but I hated his goldie-locks hair and his cheap shot on Tucker way back when in one of those playoff series that the Leafs won. If I cheer for the Sens, its not cause they are the Sens, it'd be for one of a few reasons A) 14 years without the Cup in Canada is way too long, the Americans don't deserve the Cup, B) The sens have a lot of likeable players (almost everybody excluding Alfredsson), or C) This whole "Win it for Elgin" sentiment has a lot of emotion behind it.... however they are just as many, if not more reasons to cheer for the Ducks, so I'm really split. And no problem on the whole Finals article thing, I think a problem that has sprung up in the Project over the last few weeks is that it has suddenly become way too authoritative. In the final, Hanna's team played well, and led for most of the game, and were looking like they were going to win it. In the tenth end, Hanna's team was up by two but did not have the hammer. Hanna's team had a rock on the button that was already well guarded, and decided to throw another guard rather than take away Jones' only chance at scoring, an in-off. Jones managed to make the extremely difficult shot, coming in-off of a Ontario stone just in front of the house, to take out Hanna's shot rock to score four and win the Scott".

Moshe Lewis

Hi Earl: I noticed on the David Lewis (politician) page you credit his father's Anglicized name as "Morris". If it were Anglicized it would be "Moses", not "Morris" as stated in Pierre G. Well, unfortnately, even if it appears in a book, it can be wrong. In the comprehensive biography of the Lewis family, Unfinished Journey, Moshe was never referred to as Morris. I think Mr. Normandin made a mistake. As well, being Jewish myself, I know that his name would most likely not be Anglicized to Morris, if it ever was Anglicized. Even Moshe is an Anglicization, because his name in Yiddish was actually pronounced more like "Maishe" (the spelling that Cameron Smith would use throughout the book). Don't take this personally Earl, but Morris is obviously wrong, but I like that you've added another reference to the article though.--Abebenjoe 04:43, 18 June 2007 (UTC)

Okay, well I'll have to move poor Donald MacDonald again, for the upteenth time. Oh well, we'll get his naming covention correct at some point (you really don't know how frustrating it is have two guys with basically the exact name, being involved in the same party at about the same time. Even in biographies, biographers and historians mix up Donald from NS and Donald from ON all the time, ascribing things done to the other and vice versa. Really makes it complicated to present good information here and in other places. CBC's Seven Wonders of Canada

The article that you protected is not official. It was put together by one single network and is not deemed official, hence that is the reason why I thought it should be CBC's Seven Wonders of Canada and not, simply the Seven Wonders of Canada. I wouldn't mind if the vote was called the Seven Wonders of Canada, but I truly would like to see it separated fairly. This is not a plausible argument. The program would obviously not be "CBC's Seven Wonders of Canada", as it would not make sense. The list is only the CBC's list and should be noted somewhere in the title. This is not a government, nor a national list, it is simply a television program that they made to get more viewers. In terms of the "made up titles" you are speaking of, unless CBC owns this website (which I highly doubt) then it would not be a made up title. I agree with you though that you should call programs by their names as shown on the particular network or show, except that this particular article is not ABOUT a show, it is only showing the list that was produced meagerly by the three judges. - kevinbocking

It is not made up, it is not the name of the program, because that is not what the article is about, if you want to make it specifically about the show, then be my guest. I'm not tagging them for not having rationale - trust me, I wouldn't do that, since that'd incredibly counterproductive. I'm replacing them with PNG versions, which leaves them orphaned. When I did this with college logos, about 98% of them were changed out without anybody caring, but it's the 2% that raised legitimate concerns that I wouldn't have thought of. Alberta municipal elections, 2007

Thanks for creating the above-named page. I assume that since you created the skeleton, you have thoughts as to how it should be filled out. I've filled out the St. Albert portion of it, but I'm certainly not married to the format I've used or the information that I've included; if you have other ideas about what the page should look like, let's figure it out now so it has some internal consistency (I'd also like to handle the Sturgeon County and Edmonton portions).

Speaking of the Edmonton portion, how do you think it should be handled, given that I've already created a separate article for the Edmonton election? I have no fundamental objection to merging the Edmonton municipal election, 2007 article into the provincial master article; the one problem that I see with doing so is that every other Edmonton municipal election, including those that took place before provincial legislation unified all Alberta municipal election, has its own article, and it seems like it would be a little odd not to give 2007 its own as well (to say nothing of messing with the template).

Although it's true that Joe's AfD nominations in the past few days have been NDP-based, a skim through his Deleted Edits (accessible only to admins; sorry) shows that those aren't the only articles he's been listing: he's gone after articles on minor unsuccessful candidates in general - American leftists as well as Canadian - plus articles on miscellaneous subjects.

There are limits to what the bots can do, and any that work on this stuff must be heavily overloaded, because I encounter so many dab pages where the the dablink points to a redirect, and has done so for a long time. AFAIK, the bots merely report' double redirects rather than fixing them. Indeed, but Holloway was not a politician. Nor were several of the other governors, who I have also moved back again. Flag templates for Canadian provinces and territories

Please do not bypass the standard flag template system for these 13 flags. There is nothing special about this set of 13 relative to the other ~1000 available flag templates that they need to be differently sized, and lacking a border. Inconsistency is a big problem when these templates are used on the same page with other flag templates. If you have specific pages in which you would like to see 30px versions, then the preferred method is to use the size= parameter with the standard Template:flag, on those specific pages. Uh, please read WP:OWN. Although you may created these templates only for use on a relatively small number of curling articles, they have been "usurped" by many other editors for many other articles. For example, Template:AB is transcluded on over 500 articles, many of which rely on standard flag icon formatting. Look at Highwood, Calgary, where the flags for Canada, Alberta, and Calgary are all intended to line up together. Other instances I've come across are Little League World Series articles, where Canadian province flags, US state flags, and international country flags are all used and therefore all need to be similarly sized. You even reverted a change of mine at 2001 Jeux de la Francophonie where the Quebec and New Brunswick flags were misaligned with the nation flags. I ask you - is it easier to edit a handful of curling articles to use the flag size you prefer, or to cause thousands of other pages to have formatting alignment problems? Maybe, but my guess is not, because I would have expected to see the use of {{CAN2}} (30px) as well, but {{CAN}} (22px + border) was used on those pages.

Now, I have a followup question about the "historical templates". Should they really be used? The discussion on Talk:Flag of Alberta indicates that the flag used in {{AB2}} was in fact never really used. The original author's comments on the Commons page for Image:Hypotheical flag of Alberta.svg even express the speculative nature of this design: Possible flag of en:Alberta from 1907. Created from the SVG images of the Alberta flag and of the British Blue Ensign. As there does not seem to be any verifiable references for these flags, should we still use them? New Democratic Party candidates, 2007 Ontario provincial election

Articles like New Democratic Party candidates, 2007 Ontario provincial election are never fun to write, given the sheer ammount of information being put into them, but you should follow the standard set at the other candidate articles (see the Liberal candiate list), by which I mean:

• List sorted alphabetically, by candidate's last name
• Only putting non-incumbents on the page
• Not giving non-incumants their own article, unless they have done something notable before the election or are elected

I know re-sorting the entire list would not be enjoyable (seeing as the NDP have 97 non-incumbents - I wonder if there is a bot that could do it more easily?), but you seem to be quite interested in NDP-related articles and I'd figure that I'd alert you to the standard. I noticed the 'image' page specifies that the image is being used under fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first fair use criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed image could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this image is not replaceable, please:

1. Go to the image description page and edit it to add {{di-replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original Replaceable fair use template.
2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace the fair use image by finding a freely licensed image of its subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or a similar) image under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.

This disambiguation was valid, as the reference in Curling is unambiguously to polytetrafluroethylene. The edit was was performed by me as part of Wikipedia:WikiProject Disambiguation. Saskatchewan election

Re: Image:Sask07.PNG, could you recolour Meadow Lake as an SP win instead of an NDP when you get a chance? There is a potential recount pending, but until that happens we need to report the actual winners as declared by Elections Saskatchewan, and Jeremy Harrison is currently the declared winner. Thanks. Yeah. Sonntag was declared on election night, but the returning officer reported a tabulation error the following morning which flipped it to Harrison. (Shades of 2004, no?) Absentee ballots aren't being counted until the 19th, though, so save yourself a potential future hassle by hanging onto the NDP version of the map just in case. Bearcat 18:03, 9 November 2007 (UTC)
