Indian cities project![edit]

Sure go ahead! WP:BB. Featured article writers would obviously be knowing the parameters better than most others ;) =Nichalp «Talk»= 04:39, 13 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Earthquakes: I found one link [1] which has a little info. I keep reading about the zones in the newspapers so information should be available in media sites. About the project, other than healthcare, what sort of additions can you think of? =Nichalp «Talk»= 04:56, 13 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Reading your comment on Nichalp's talk page I got inspired to create Earthquake hazard zoning of India. - Aksi_great (talk) 07:13, 13 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

My RFA[edit]

Hi Dwaipayanc/Archive 7,

Thank you for supporting my RFA! Unfortunately it did not succeed mainly because most opposers wanted me to spend more time on Wikipedia. Thank you for your faith in me & looking forward to your continued support in the future.

superthanks[edit]

Hi Dwaipayanbhai - I'm very sorry to have disappointed your expectation in me, but it had become impossible for me to compromise my principles. I don't covet adminship at all, so it wasn't a difficult decision - I simply cannot accept misrepresentation and nonsense. However, I cannot tell you how greatly joyous I feel at the enthusiastic, wonderful support you expressed for me. I don't know how hard it will be to understand that your supports means extremely a lot to me. I thank you from my heart, and please let me know if I can ever be assistance or help in anything.

Thanks[edit]

Hi Dwaipayanc, thanks for supporting my request for adminship! Unfortunately, it ended with a final tally of 45/15/2, no consensus. I may have another go in the near future, once the school year is over. Thanks again! -- getcrunkjuicecontribs 23:00, 15 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hey Dwaipayanc. Apologies for the late reply. I think the article is ready for a peer review. The only major work left in my eyes is creating an article on Municipal Corporation of Delhi and New Delhi Municipal Council. Any suggestions?? Cheers --Incman|वार्ता 00:10, 16 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the note. I think shopping in Delhi is one thing which definitely deserves its own sub-section atleast. It forms an integral part of Delhi's culture. An article on Delhi is incomplete without describing shopping areas like Chandni Chowk, Lajpat Nagar, Sarojni Nagar, Greater Kailash, Connaught Place and Dilli Haat. India is perhaps the most diverse country in the world and having one code for all Indian cities is not justified. Sports too is a part of the city's culture and giving it a seperate section is perhaps a bit too much. Regarding subsections, I don't know why it should not be there. Is there any logical explanation or is it just a thumbrule followed by the concerned Wikiproject? There are several featured articles on other non-Indian cities which have subsections. I used the article on Canberra as a model for this article. Again, it is completely unjustified to have the same standards for all Indian cities. --Incman|वार्ता 04:27, 16 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the quick reply. In that case, the article should not be put up for Peer Review until the dispute is resolved. I don't mind taking up the matter to the WikiProject. Cheers --Incman|वार्ता 04:50, 16 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
A very important point has striked my mind. The article is on the National Capital Territory of Delhi which is a special union territory and not a city as such. So the article should not necessarily abide by the rules of WikiProject Indian cities. --Incman|वार्ता 05:14, 16 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Ok, I get your point regarding the disadvantages of having so many subsections. Below is a new layout in accordance with the guidelines of WikiProject Indian cities:

==Origin of name==

==History==

==Geography==

===Climate===

===Urban structure===

==Government and politics==

==Economy==

==Demographics==

==Culture== includes combined subsections art, festivals, cuisine and shopping. Will create new article on Shopping in Delhi and merge Markets in Delhi with it.

==Utilities and media==

==Transport==

==Sports==

==Education==

However, I still prefer the present layout. I was going through the culture section in Kolkatta article and realized that it too had separate paras on cuisine, festivals etc. Subsections help organize the artcile making it easier to read. The culture section in the Kolkatta article is too long and if it was divided into subsections, it would have been easier for a common reader to go through the article and find the topic of interest. For example, if I want to know about Kolkatta's cuisine, I don't have to go through each and every para in the culture section to find info on cuisine. Also, it is highly probable, that since I don't find cuisine in the contents list, I won't read the article and instead find info on cuisine on several other articles on the internet on Kolkatta. Besides, one should be smart enough to know that cuisine is a part of city's culture. Thanks --Incman|वार्ता 00:47, 17 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

That's fine with me. Thanks for guidance :) --Incman|वार्ता 01:56, 17 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Well, I am a student of Purdue University, Indiana and presently my summer break is going on. I am staying with my parents in Gurgaon. I stay up early because I am still suffering from Jet lag (Indiana is about 11 hrs behind India). Well I will take some time to get rid of this Jet lag. Yeah, I have heard about this ongoing reservation dispute. Hope your stay in Delhi is going well. --Incman|वार्ता 02:13, 17 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I noticed that you left a comment at the project, but unfortunately at the wrong page. You left your comment at the talk page of the General Forum subpage, but actually comments related to the project are supposed to go into the GeneralForum subpage itself. The talk page is kept for discussing the mechanics of the GeneralForum, not matters related to the project in general. Loom91 07:31, 17 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hey, thanks. It's still an initial revision but I used the Indian cities template so it is just a little structured. Also, I could not find some information maybe someone else can fill in the gaps.

Indian freedom fighters[edit]

Yes I noted what happened yesterday, and while Category:Indian activists is a poor choice, I think there had to be a renaming, becoz many of those included in the cat were not freedom fighters. Let's discuss a better name, but I don't think there is reason to dispute what happened. Rama's Arrow 18:35, 19 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

That is exactly the problem with the title "Indian activists." Frankly, I think its gonna have to be something like "Indian revolutionaries" for Gandhians and revolutionaries, with a master cat of "Indian political leaders (1857-1947)." Rama's Arrow 18:43, 19 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I'll work on this by tomorrow. Also, Patel's FAC will go up tomorrow. I've finally completed adding info about his role in partition times, and now I must do the copyediting as per the recommendations of others. I'm a bit sad that even though I've been around most of the while, my editcount and contibutions have been much lower for this month than I orginally planned. Somehow I just couldn't get to finishing the Patel FA drive, not to speak of IIM and others. Rama's Arrow 18:45, 19 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
There should be a cat for "Gandhian revolutionaries" and "Indian revolutionaries." There was no other group working for independence. The revolutionaries of the 1857 rebellion already have separate cat. Rama's Arrow 18:49, 19 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I hope you can contribute 1-2 FAs before you go off for your June exams. Good work on Darjeeling, but I think you can do one more. Rama's Arrow 18:52, 19 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Yes I think that'll work (for the categories). Rama's Arrow 18:53, 19 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
At least one fellow here has his priorities straight. We've 5-6 people "out on exams" who still make 10-20 edits each day. Rama's Arrow 19:00, 19 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
As I do not consult this page regularly, I did not see your notes earlier. Of course I want this category to be restored to its initial form. 'Activists' is not always a compliment. 'Fighters for India's Freedom' seems to be adequate. All the best.--BobClive 09:16, 25 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Portal:India[edit]

Hi,

I am quite saddened by the state of Portal:India as nobody seems to care about it. I am assuming the role of supervising the selection of Selected Articles, Today's Selected articles, etc. for the portal and will continue till there are enough people to start things going by consensus. I feel that this step of mine is essestial as currently the portal is orphaned and leaving it as such would hurt its featured portal status. You seem to be the only other person interested in the portal and I would be glad to work with you towards making it THE BEST portal on Wikipedia. Warm regards, -Ambuj Saxena (talk) 20:16, 19 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hello again! I've been working on the article based on the suggestions including yours that came up at the PR. I just wanted to clarify something. You had asked me to consider the usage of citeweb and citenews templates. Could you please tell me what their advantage over the traditional ref tag that I've used is? Thanks! -- thunderboltza.k.a.Deepu_Joseph |TALK 11:55, 22 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Umm...okay. Thanks. So I guess I might as well get on the task of converting all the references. :( Also, do you know how much time I spent to get the referenences cited before the period. I thought it looked prettier that way. :((
On another note, do you think I should remove health care from the article? There arent many important educational institutions in the city, I fear. -- thunderboltza.k.a.Deepu_Joseph |TALK 15:45, 22 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your support on the deletion of this article! I don't wish for any of the information within to be lost however, I realized the enormous amount of work it will take to integrate it all into relevent places in other articles. Therefore I felt like only an AFD would motivate contributors to do this. That being said, you could move this imformation into the talk page of the Kolkata main article or into a subpage of that article (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kolkata/trivia) or in your user space. I also included to guides written by wikipedians on integrating trivia into articles within my nomination. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by The stuart (talkcontribs) .

TS Peer Review[edit]

Hi, there ... thanks for the note on my talk page. I'm confused, though. Someone else nominated TS for peer review, and I didn't/don't feel it was/is ready just yet -- there is still more I want to do with it, and I am waiting for other editors to be available, and I'd like to see it receive a medical peer review by Wiki physicians. On the lead (and other pending issues), I am waiting for some editors who are on "Wikibreak" to be available to help, as it seemed to me (perhaps wrongly?) that leads on some of the featured medical articles are a bit different than on other kinds of articles. Also, the timing of the peer review caught me by surprise as I'm stretched really thin until I complete some travel in mid-June. I'm not really sure what is meant by me "wrapping up the review now" ... I'm not sure how I would do that, or if it is I that should do that (since I didn't nominate it for peer review)? (I'm still fairly new to Wikipedia.) Any advice you can give me is welcome ... TIA. Sandy 00:33, 28 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

India[edit]

Dwaipayan, I dont understand why you are ready to accept their silly statements that India was not there historically , was a british creation etc etc. 1.If India was not there historically, then to which place were the european countries in the 14th and 15th century , trying to find the sea route  ?? 2. Why did columbus name the natives of America as "indians"??? 3. As coming to our national identities, we see it as a land where our dharmic traditions rule.(for eg. Sankaracharya establishing his four 'math's at four corners of our nation etc).

Surely sankaracharya did this before the arrival of brutish "saviours". I can list such examples on and on . But i wonder why ppl like you so readily accept this "so called " facts .Bharatveer 07:22, 28 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

ISRO[edit]

Hi, Dwaipayanc, recently someone has edited the ISRO article on the Indian space programme - alegedly to reformat it - but as of right now, half of the article seems to be missing, and I am not sure why this would be neccecary to edit it - the only addition this person has made is not perticularily relevent to an article which was pretty good before. Ive notaced that you have reverted other articles automatically, which I dont know how to do, so I was wondering if you could revert the ISRO article to the last unvandalised edit, if it is still in this state when you recieve this message - 06:46, 30 May 2006 Ejvyas (→History) - seems to be the edit that changed the article. Thanks, Vastu 18:00, 30 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I've communicated with Bharatveer who did some minor edits inbetween the truncated version and reversion to full version, because his edits had to be reverted also, unfirtunately. Re:Plans[edit]

Hi Dwaipayan - thanks for your compliments - it is indeed a long-awaited, moment of happiness right now! I've already nominated IIT and Patel for WP:TFA. Right now Sukh and myself are working to make Sikhism an FA. I was a bit disappointed that Pournami and co. dropped K. R. Narayanan's FA drive (for whatever reasons). I know about South India and Delhi - there are many in a good position. Plus, it is Shreshth's dream that his hard work on Fundamental Rights, Directive Principles and Fundamental Duties of India results in FA status. Your help is especially needed on the latter as Shreshth himself is pressed for time - Ambuj and I are trying to solve some of the outstanding issues.

I just discovered the happy convenience of picking up a book or two from my local library and writing an FA on the subject. Its an absolutely magnificent way of learning a wide array of subjects very well. Even though June will be extremely, extremely important and busy for my priority work and main pursuits, I hope that I will churn out at least 1 FA a week from now on - which is a better rate than ever! Iqbal[edit]

Hi Dwaipayan - I request you to please have a look at Muhammad Iqbal. I need your help in making this an FA. Rama's Arrow 12:27, 31 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

That is indeed a coincidence! What attracts you to Iqbal? Rama's Arrow 13:10, 31 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Tell me now or else I'll start an FARC for Kolkata! (hehehehe...but seriously, spill the beans!) Rama's Arrow 13:13, 31 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Iqbal's views did not change, but evolved in a straight line. I don't claim to know why he wrote "Tarana-e-Hind," but he was very young then and the poem is not suggestive. Iqbal's views developed in a strictly religious line in the years after the poem was written, and he came to hold the view that "Muslim civilization," as opposed to a nation of Hindus, Muslims, Sikhs, various ethnic communities, was the only tenable (and worthwhile) political entity. Iqbal was not only a proponent of the political independent of Muslims of India, but also of the political revival and general unity of all Muslim nations, as a common Ummah.
Sadly, as V. S. Naipaul suggests, Iqbal was thus implying a rejection of Hindu society and Hinduism - asserting that Muslims just could not live in an un-Islamic society with un-Islamic people. Iqbal believed deeply in Islam, not just the scripture but in the metaphysics and philosophy, which would create a "spiritually awakened" society - again, he implies that spiritual awakening is impossible for non-Muslims. This combines the proselytyzing zeal of Islam with the legal concepts of Shariat which are supposed to govern society. Almost all poems Iqbal wrote are entirely suggestive of these ideas.
Perhaps you might be interested in a very superb book - "Beyond Belief: Islamic Excursions Among the Converted Peoples" by V. S. Naipaul. It is tremendous and superb in its exploration of Muslim pysche in Asia. Rama's Arrow 13:37, 31 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
And Iqbal wasn't the first in this line of thought (he was only the first to propose partition) - the ideal society was envisaged by Muslim intellectuals as being completely founded on Islam, and thus excluding or eliminating of non-Islamic cultures, philosophy and religion. The religious objective of Islam thus combines with the political objectives of Muslim societies in many places. Rama's Arrow 13:41, 31 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Mind you, even though this explanation may portray Iqbal as a bigot, I regard him as one of the most brilliant minds of his era. His whole life was the pursuit of salvation. It was purely amazing to come to understand how Iqbal's works covered a wide array of subjects, beautiful literary and poetic compositions and wonderful styles of writing, unveiling a complex, deep and rich thinking that covered religion, philosophy, politics, individuals and society all at once! Iqbal saw a global ummah as salvation, and Pakistan was a stepping stone in that direction. Rama's Arrow 13:51, 31 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Hinduism is the endeavour to discover God - throughout its history, it has been characterized by different attempts to discover and expain God - such as animism and worship of natural phenomena, God-kings, atheism (the Shramanas), asceticism, etc. Unlike other religions, it cannot be defined by the people who are its adherents, but by this core endorsement of human endeavours to discover God. Thus, it flows in confluence with the wonderful philosophy of Jesus (who I personally revere) and the faith of Muslims, who are unparalleled in their devotion. It covers all the sciences, maths, arts, everything. Thus, I don't feel offended by Iqbal's thinking even though I know that when put into practice, it will have to be oppposed. Just yesterday I commented to Sukh on how Guru Nanak's philosophy is strikingly and eerily akin to the message of the Bhagavad Gita. Even if God didn't speak it to Arjuna, the Gita is IMO, the most fascinating work I've ever laid my eyes on. Rama's Arrow 14:00, 31 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Even a deeply rational, scientific analysis of the Gita is possible, and the results may leave one breathless! Rama's Arrow 14:02, 31 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry for the sermon. Its a common habit of mine to be unable to control thoughts on topics that personally amaze me. Rama's Arrow 14:03, 31 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
