Great Contributor[edit]

I see that you have been contributing extensively and wisely on Wikipedia. Would you like to assume janitorial duties on Wikipedia as well? If yes, then I would like to nominate you for the position of an administrator. Please reply. --Andy123 07:25, 12 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I could not penetrate the ambiguity of your answer. A 'Yes' or 'No' would do much help.
"However, I do not mind some janitorial works though. Please let me know when such works are to be done." and,
"I would like to continue the works on Wikipedia as usual" are little contradicting. I hope you don't mind. --Andy123 07:57, 12 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Infobox in Barasat[edit]

I tried working that out myself, but could not come to any possible solution. I am new to Wikipedia, and do not understand the mark up well. I think, I will ask for admin attention on this article. --Andy123 07:30, 12 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Sean Black has just informed me that the template is faulty and it would not work without an image. He is trying to improve the template, but do you have the image relevant for the article Barasat? --Andy123 07:51, 12 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Forgive my intrusion on your conversation here, but perhaps I can help. When you get these kind of pages the way to overcome this is:
  • in Internet Explorer, right-click the link and choose "Copy Shortcut"
  • in Firefox, right-click the link and choose "Copy Link Location"
Then paste that to the address bar and hey presto you have the article. In this particular case the article is at this link. Hope that helps. Green Giant 06:39, 13 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

categories[edit]

Hi Dwaipayanc - Just to let you know, I'm presently re-organizing categories related to History of India, and freedom struggle. There are many sub-categories specific to the job, so please keep in mind not to "over-categorize" - meaning, if you have "Indian revolutionary freedom fighters," no need to link "Indian freedom fighters" as well. Partition of India[edit]

Dwai, did you even notice that we have two long lists at the bottom of the article re books and films relating to the Partition? You are repeating some of the material in your new section.

I have a suggestion -- how about moving the book and movie lists OUT of the historical article and putting them in a breakout article, Partition of India in the arts, and then just having a sentence or two to point to the article? This would simplify the article and also allow you to include more of the material that interests you. Zora 00:43, 16 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Dwai, I would strongly advise against using a title like Cultural impact of the partition of India, because:

1) "Culture" is ambiguous in English. It can mean high culture, or just the arts (which is what I suggested), or culture in the broadest anthropological sense, which would include things like kinship, table manners, etc. I do get the feeling that you mean the arts, not table manners.

2) "Impact" is an over-used word that makes the copyeditors I know (from a mailing list) snicker. It sounds like a fancy corporate word for "cause" or sometimes "effects".

Starting with the words "Partition of India" is a good choice, because then we have the main article, Partition of India, and then we have breakout articles, like Partition of Indian and the arts, Partition of Indian and the effect on the Indian military, Partition of India and Indian cuisine, Partition of India and table manners, etc. :)

Of course, other editors may have even better ideas. Discuss it at the Partition of India article? It's also easy to change the name, at least before it's linked to too many other articles, when it starts becoming a chore. So any choice is not necessarily forever. Zora 07:12, 16 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Central Avenue[edit]

Just wanted to shoot you a quick note to let you know that I set up Central Avenue as a disambiguation page. A few entries (including some I've worked on) dealing with the Los Angeles area linked to the page before it had been deleted, so I thought it best to create a page to send folks in either direction should the need arise. Images Kolkata[edit]

Hey, thanks!! I really like your images but I do have a request. I think we should not have more than two images per subsection as a general rule. For instance, you just added some nice images for the transport section but now it messes up all the other images. We need to keep images next to the relevant text as best as possible! Having said that, it would be really cool if you have access to a public domain tram image :)

Thanks and lets hope that Kolkata becomes a featured article by end of this month! Your message: Hi! Nice works on Kolkata. Thanks a lot. Please see if any further shrtening of the article is possible. I am hunting for good images! Bye.--Dwaipayanc 08:06, 19 March 2006 (UTC)

Well, I did look at Kerala. The only section where I noticed more than two images (it was three) was History. However, I did say "as a general rule." Thing is that when you add 4-5 images for the transport section, you suddenly have the images in completely different sections. It just does not look very professional then (in my opinion). However, if you look at any featured article (including kerala), they tend to have images next to the relevant text. If the text can support four images then it is fine to have four images. Does that make sense?

Hi! Nice works on Kolkata. Thanks a lot. Please see if any further shrtening of the article is possible. I am hunting for good images! Bye.--Dwaipayanc 08:06, 19 March 2006 (UTC)

I differ with you in one poine, the restriction of number of images. Somebody said (I cannot, as usual, remember who :)) an image speaks more than a hundred words ! Please see Kerala, where the number of images used is less, but some sections have more than 2 images. However, if we get better images, we can easily delete the earlier poorer images. I will be hunting for a tram. The article has more glitzy images of Kolkata]], rather than some images presenting daily life. I am looking foe some such kind of photos. Bye.--Dwaipayanc 08:49, 19 March 2006 (UTC)

BTW, you mentioned Mumbai which is the guideline I am using to get Kolkata to FA tag. Mumbai has 10-11 images. Currently Kolkata article has over twenty images. I agree images are VERY important but you can also have too many images. I can almost guarantee that kolkata page has more images than any other India city page and it will not become FA if our images are floating around interferring with the flow of text.

Sincerely, (Blacksun 08:58, 19 March 2006 (UTC))[reply]

Ya, I use firefox too but I use laptop. For me, the third image for transport section went right in middle of festival section. Yes, I have no problem moving it to talk section. BTW, really like the sadhu image but now the Armenian jew image is floating in middle of next section for me :P

Also, it would be pretty cool if you had a soccer image from kolkatta instead of the eden garden image for the sports section or maybe a better image of eden garden.

Sorry, I just figured out today how to respond to private messages lol. Yes, getting feedback will be good. BTW, their might be another interesting way to present more images; check out this gallery section for jaisalmer at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jaisalmer.

Prostitution in India[edit]

So far as I know it is legal but discouraged (this may vary from placwe to place, however). If you know differently, please add your say to the article. I am working on it right now and doing some reading that I hope will clear it up and get the stub into a decent artivcle over the next few days. (Arundhati Bakshi (talkcontribs)) 10:49, 19 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

According to http://www.hrw.org/reports/1995/India.htm#P124_7404, prostitution itself is not illegal in India, but the commercialised promotion of vice is. (Arundhati Bakshi (talkcontribs)) 11:04, 19 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, the wording seems a bit ambiguous, but maybe that;s because the law itself is? I know that protitution ios wiedely tolerated by officials and pretty much ignored by the police but that trafficking is illegal. I have a book that I am reading and am hoping to get a more definitve answer. (Arundhati Bakshi (talkcontribs)) 11:20, 19 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Regarding the Template, you can place it where you think it might look the best, right now most of the articles are kind of small so it looks awkward, but if you think you can imporve on any of the articles, don't be afraid to help out with the editing! LoL, thanks. I am silly because I kept checking the top of the discussion page for new messages. I was wondering where everyone went. Anyways, I think we should combine Modern Kolkata and Colonial architecture into one separate entity called "Architecture" or "Infrastructure."

(Blacksun 13:32, 20 March 2006 (UTC))[reply]

You wrote: Hi ! The sections "Colonial architecture" and "Modern Kolkata" seem extra in Kolkata, as Rama's Arrow and AreJay have pointed out in the talk page of Kolkata. Though it is not necessary to build the article just like other city articles, yet we should try to conform the article to a general rule which has been followed in Wikipedia. We should try to absorb these two sections elsewhere, may be in "Geography", "Administration" etc. Regarding images, we should create a central repository in Kolkata image gallery and use images from there as appropriate , as Ganeshk nicely adviced. However, we should concentrate now on the text, so that the text is good, informative, grammtically correct, and properly resourced. Thanks for all the work you are doing. Please see the template I've added in "See also" section. You can add more Kolkata-related articles to the template, I could not incorporate all articles. Thanks.--Dwaipayanc 08:55, 20 March 2006 (UTC)

Hey, just got your message. I already combined those two sections into something temperorarily called city growth. What do you think abou it? I will take a look at sydney and canberra.
I agree. It was only temporary and I think I like urban structure. I will rename it now!
Hi! You know, this "city growth" - does not look good. It sounds a bit peculiar. "Urban structure" , as I said to you, could sound better. In that section, we can discuss CBD as well as new growth patterns, and also a bit of colonial architectures. Above all, we shall be able to produce precedence examples in case someone questions the relevance of such a section!--Dwaipayanc 14:20, 20 March 2006 (UTC)

Hi! Please try to sign your comments by clicking the third button from the right on the switch panel above the edit box. Usually new talks are added to the end of an on-going talk page, both user talk pages and article talk pages. Hey, please look at the Kolkata image gallery, you can use image from the gallery. You can remove images from the main article as appropriate, but just check in every case if the image exists in the Kolkata image gallery. Please add more images to the gallery when you come across them. Bye.--Dwaipayanc 13:39, 20 March 2006 (UTC)

Hi ! Please see Canberra. There the geography section consists of geography proper, "climate" and the "urban structure", while a separate section of "Infrastructure" contains health, transport and utilities! Sydney also does the same. We can solve the problem of "modern Kolkata" and "architecture" etc by following this pattern, and absorbing the contents of these would-be-deleted sections within "urban structure". Kolkata is still a moderate article, just about 35 KB. Many F.A.s are 45 KB. So no problem regarding size. Bye.--Dwaipayanc 14:12, 20 March 2006 (UTC)

Hi, I think this will work out better because media section is not that strong + media is an important part of the culture of the city. Also, I am currently researching to get more information to break out the film part as a separate subsection of People and Culture and put it either before or after media. So it will flow better too. Once I do that, I will also change the name of People and Culture to People and Customs and make all of it part of "City Culture" or simply "Culture." What do you think?

Hello, I really like the radar image under urban structure. I removed it originally as it did not seem that good under geography. I was wondering if you think we are close to nominating the article for review? We have a good reference list and text has improved a lot in past few days. A review might be useful at this point. Looking forward to your suggestions.--Blacksun 20:12, 20 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Nice work[edit]

Hey, I must say it looks lot better by moving colonial architecture stuff to tourism. Now the urban structure has a lot better lead in and tourism looks less like a brochure. I still have concerns about the last two paragraphs in tourism but it is lot better now than before. Nice work! (Blacksun 00:36, 22 March 2006 (UTC))[reply]

Kolkata[edit]

Hi - In case my shout was not received, I'll write it down below. I'm in Ahmedabad rite now, so I figured this would be the closest I'd get to Kolkata, and fancied my chances...

There is no need to hesitate in starting peer review. However, bear in mind that writing an FA on Kolkata will require covering more ground than a PR will reveal - some key holes may go unplugged till FAC. I'm sure Kolkata will be FA in no time. I was very surprised to find no article on Sarat Bose - could have sworn there was one. Rama's Arrow 10:09, 26 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I'd also like to coordinate a visit with a test match at Eden Gardens. However, I'm very pleased that I know at least one person in Kolkata - will definitely want to meet you, and I hope I get an opportunity soon enough. I see that you will have the company of a really wonderful person soon enough. Cheers, Rama's Arrow 10:40, 26 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Esperanza Newsletter, Issue #1[edit]

Reach out is a program aimed at allowing users to bring issues that they have had in Wikipedia to a listening, sympathetic and caring audience:
"No one can know how we feel if we do not say. We cannot expect to get understanding if we do not ask for it. No one will dispute that sometimes life's issues are too much for one person. It is fair to say that sometimes Wikipedia's problems fall under the same heading. This is a place where you can bring the bruises that can sometimes be got on this project for attention."
The Stress alerts program aims at identifying users who are stressed, alerting the community of thier stress and works in tandem with the Stressbusters at trying to identify causes of stress and eliminating them.
Note from the editor
Welcome to this new format of the Esperanza Newsletter, which came about during the last Advisory Council meeting - we hope you like it! The major changes are that each month, right after the Council meeting, this will be sent out and will include two featured programs and a sum up of the meeting. Also, it will be signed by all of the Advisory Council members, not just Celestianpower. Have an Esperanzial end of March, everyone!
  1. Future meetings are to be held monthly, not fortnightly as before.
  2. Bans and Access level changes (apart from autovoice) in the IRC channel are to be reported at the new log.
  3. In the IRC channel, there is going to be only one bot at a time.
  4. The charter requires members to have 150 edits and 2 weeks editing. Why this is the case will be clarified.
  5. A new Code of Conduct will be drafted by JoanneB and proposed to the Esperanza community.
  6. The NPA reform idea is to be dropped officially.
  7. Charter ammendments are to be discussed in future, not voted on.
  8. The Advisory Council is not going to be proposed to be expanded by the Advisory Council themselves, if others want to propose it, they will listen.
Signed...

Hey, do you want to work on the Bangla one too? Right now, there seems to be no Bengali editors from west bengal. You can join it at http://bn.wikipedia.org . Dwaipayanc, Thanks for your response. I understand your point of view. But the aforesaid line (The generally disreputable state of affairs perpetuated by the West Bengal government, communist and totally corrupt has not helped matters) was not my contribution in the first place, but that of someone called Ishanb on 2nd January 2006. Please refer to his/ her contribution on that date. This person even made it autobiographical by adding the following:

"Santiniketan is still my home, but the idyllic existence envisioned by Tagore (and my grandfather, Amiya Chakravarty, who was Tagore's secretary and a poet in his own right) is rapidly disappearing"

I had to reduce that. As regards the article, do what you think is best.

Also keep up the good work.

On kolkata, here is how the citation

  1. ↑ Suranjan Das. "The 1992 Calcutta Riot in Historical Continuum: A Relapse into ‘Communal Fury’?". Cambridge Journals Online (Volume 34, Issue 02, April 2000)

would look for Harvard

  • Das, S (2000), "The 1992 Calcutta Riot in Historical Continuum: A Relapse into 'Communal Fury'?", Modern Asian Studies, 34, Cambridge University Press: 281–306.

There are some formatting issues (how to make it 2 columns and such), but u can just copy from Satyajit and the fill in the Kolkata references. Once you made the Reference, you really refer it like this:

There was lot of communal fury. [1]

On Mohiner Ghoraguli[edit]

Not a problem that you remove the links to Mohiner Ghoraguli from the main Kolkata page. Actually, I was browsing some pages and came across these articles on the band and Goutam Chattopadhayay, and tried enriching them with more content. Then felt the impulse of adding them to the Kolkata article. Anyways, folks can get to them from the Bangla band link already provided. Also, I added and linked up Allahabad Bank from Kolkata and also tried to add content to the bank's page as well.

You are doing a tremendous job for the article and I sincerely hope that for all the hard work put in by you, Kolkata becomes a FA.

Why are you adding a category for a place that isn't mentioned in the article? --Mel Etitis (Μελ Ετητης) 20:50, 29 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi! I added the Category:Kolkata culture to the article because the article is regarding a Bangla band which is part of the culture of Kolkata as mentioned in Kolkata and Kolkata culture. Mohiner Ghoraguli, which is also a Bangla band, has similar categorization. If you are trying to say that the word Kolkata is not metioned in Chandrabindu (band), I shall be able to add the info that the band is based in Kolkata, supportrd by reference. If you are trying to say that this band does not contribute in any sort to the culture of Kolkata, then I am really helpless !--Dwaipayanc 06:46, 31 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not sure why you found my comment ambiguous; Kolkata isn't mentioned in the article, hence my question. If you can add a sourced reference to that city, then of course the category should stay. --Mel Etitis (Μελ Ετητης) 07:47, 31 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Kolkata[edit]

looking at kolkata, though, it seems to be mainly web references. I am not sure if Harvard style is the best option there.--ppm 02:38, 30 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
