Request for London Eye image use[edit]
Hi David
My client, Premier Tax Free (UK) Ltd have requested permission to use your photo of the London Eye, which is on your Wiki page.
It's an A5 brochure about shopping in London for tourists. They intend to use the image on the front cover, though I need to retouch it slightly to incorporate the foreground of another shot they've sourced, so I can place two people onto the scene - the recurring theme of the brochure covers.
I'd appreciate confirmation that you're happy for them to use your image.

Canon 50mm[edit]
Hey, I am considering getting the Canon 50mm f/1.8 for landscape as my kit lens tends to be very soft. How would you recommend it? --Muhammad(talk) 22:17, 11 July 2009 (UTC)
- It's definitely a very good value-for-money lens. I wouldn't use it wide open (but of course you would never do that for landscape photos anyway) as it is a bit soft and lacking contrast until maybe f/2.8, but from f/2.8 to f/8, it's excellent. The only problem is that sometimes it misfocuses. Usually you can see that it has through the viewfinder (but it is slight), so I find that I have to refocus a few times until I'm satisfied that it has locked on successfully. That's my only complaint. It would certainly be better than the kit lens, although less flexible obviously as you cannot zoom it. Given the cost of it, it's a worthy addition to your lens collection. If it isn't wide enough to fit the whole composition into a single photo, it's quite easy to stitch a panorama with it. Diliff | (Talk) (Contribs) 20:48, 12 July 2009 (UTC)

- I had a look at my panoramas on Wikipedia and I don't think I actually have any taken with the 50mm, which is strange because I do use it. I tend to prefer my 85mm for panoramas though, but it's quite a bit more expensive than the 50mm so I'm sure you're not looking at that. I don't suppose that this one will help you very much? ;-) Unfortunately it's huge (23mb). It's not downsized at all though (15820x3805), so you could get a good idea of quality of the lens from it. It has had a small amount of sharpening applied, although because of the bending and stretching inherent in a panoramic image, a single photo might be slightly better quality. Anyway, if there's no way you can view this, I could email you some crops of it, or some other images. - No that was due to DOF, simply because it was so close to the camera (probably one or two metres away), and because I focused on infinity. Whenever you use a larger focal length to stitch a panorama, you can get this problem when viewing at 100%. If you can imagine that stitching four 50mm images to make a certain composition is the same framing as a single image at 24mm, and that you use the same aperture for both (say f/8), you will find that they have the same depth of field when viewed at the same physical size. When you view both at 100% however, the panorama will seem to have a shallower focus. The reason why is that you can look a lot closer at the panorama because it is higher resolution, so you will 'zoom in' on the out of focus areas and they will look more blurred as a result. Hoepfully I've explained that properly. :-) To simplify it to one sentence: It would be just as out of focus if I used a single image with a wider lens instead of stitching at 50mm, but you couldn't look as closely so it wouldn't be as noticable. Image Quality[edit]
Thanks for the tip on my photos. I always reduced the file size before uploading to Wikipedia, most of the photos I take are between 2.5 and 4 mb before compression. Are you suggesting that I always upload the photos without compressing them. Regards Mick Knapton (talk) 16:26, 13 July 2009 (UTC)

- I used Photoshop to remove a few artifacts and spots of dust etc, but a special noise reduction plugin for Photoshop called Imagenomic Noiseware Professional. It's a commercial product but I believe they have a trial version that you can play with, if you're interested. It's a lot more powerful than the noise reduction action built into Photoshop or Gimp. Hi there David, I was wondering if you could help me out with something. Do you know how to lay multiple images in Photoshop (CS4 MAC) on top of each other and then remove the object (people, cars, etc) from the final version, which weren't present in all of them (I hope you understand, what I'm asking you here)? I took a vertical panorama yesterday, which needs some further editing including this type of editing. - I know what you mean. You want to use layers in Photoshop to remove elements from just one layer so that the background containing the other layers remains visible. It depends whether your stitching program allows you to output to a layered PSD file. I use PTGui which has the option. If you do that, you can then follow these instructions (it's easier than me explaining it all with just words, you can ignore the part refering to PTGui if you use another program). NYC handheld[edit]
Hi,
As everyone else said, your photos are incredible. I'm particularly interested in the one you took from atop the Empire State Building in New York. I looked relatively closely to the panorama and didn't see any noticeable stitching areas. Whenever I shoot handheld, especially at night, the skies tend to have very inconsistent lighting. Very curious what your method is when shooting handheld. Is it something like:
- figure out a good manual setting and/or lock the exposure
- shoot a whole crapload of photos of everything and overlap large portions of the photos
- move the camera as little as possible from its axis
and...? Very curious about any pointers you have! If it isn't too much of an inconvenience, an email at [email protected] would be greatly appreciated. But I know coming here and asking for the secrets of your methods and further asking you to email them directly to me might be a tad out of line, so I understand if you don't ;-)

- Sorry, I'm not really a Cuttlefish expert, I just happened to take a photo of one in an aquarium. Of course they like salt water though, because they live in the sea and the sea is full of salt water! Hope that helps. Diliff | (Talk) (Contribs) 20:39, 23 July 2009 (UTC)

Lake District Pictures[edit]
Just wanted to say that the pictures of the Lake District are brilliant... My parents live there and i have the pleasure of visiting this area 3-4 times a year, and everytime the scenery takes my breath away... If you want to see some of parent's pictures (they take pictures every day and post it to their website) please visit their site... I can't remember the direct website address as i visit it from my own personal links page and thus never type it in! My link page is www.gazhiley.co.uk/links.htm but if you type in Hiley into google you should find it fairly quickly... It's called Lakeland cam or something... They have a group of about 5 or 6 of them who regularly post pictures from their walks around the Lakes...
Just thought you might be interested, or even want to leave them links in their guestbook for your pics for them to view - I know for one my Dad would love to see your pictures... Do you have a gallery you host your pics on or just wikipedia?

Use of Photographs - request[edit]
Dear "Diliff",
my name is Ralf Buecheler, I am the director of an English Language learning DVD which is currently being produced in Munich / Germany. The DVD will be part of a public lending system for educational media here in Germany. Teachers can get educationl media from this public media library for free and they can then use the media in their lessons.
At the moment I am working on a DVD on London for pupils in their third year of learning English. One part of the DVD will be an animated map of central London where the user can select certain sights. Upon selection a picture of the selected building / location is shown and a narrator tells a story about this place / building.
We would like to use the following (wonderful) photographs for this purpose:

Unfortunately in this case it is not possible to release "a copy of, or full URL of the license" at the same place along eith the image, because the image would be part of a programme. Could we instead reproduce the licence (including URL) and your name in our booklet? Every DVD comes with a booklet of about 40 pages which contains teaching material, further informatio and an index of sources.
I would be very happy and grateful if you could answer my questions. I am looking forward to hearing from you.

- Hi Graham, I'm glad you liked the new images. To be entirely honest, I did feel a little guilty in replacing your lead image, as it was by no means a bad image, and I was conscious that in doing so, I'd removed all daylight images. I'm pleased you didn't take it the wrong way and supported the change though. - I'm not quite sure what you mean. Could you give me an example? I'll try to interpret your question anyway. I assume you're asking how to post process a photo without affecting the sky? The easiest way is to create a selection of the sky, feather it a bit (depends on the image but perhaps 3-5 pixels) so that there is a slightly less harsh transition on the selection, and then inverse it, so that instead of only editing the sky, you're editing everything except for the sky. That's a very simple example but it should do the job, if I've interpreted your question correctly. Diliff | (Talk) (Contribs) 17:42, 16 September 2009 (UTC)
- Thank you, David. I am sorry I could not explain better what I meant. Here are two images [1] and [2]. The first one is original, the second one is downsampled and post processed. I did not touch the sky (sorry the fog) during post processing,I only worked with foreground rocks. If you are to compare the images in preview mode (seen better in preview) side by side you will see that the quality of the fog on the left hand side of the post processed image is much worse than in the original one. - Well I'm glad that is the end of it. I certainly didn't intend to re-start anything. Muhammad asked the question and as Wikipedia is a wiki, everything should be transparent and that includes our actions and posts. Although I posted it somewhere inappropriate initially, I corrected this and placed my reply directly onto his talk page. I'm sure he is not going to let it affect his dealings with you, and neither will I. I thought, when the last time I was, for example, unfair. Then I realized that you were unhappy with my opposes of your images, that you might think that it was a retaliation of some kind. I'd like to assure you that my votes and comments on your images had absolutely nothing to do with any, and I mean any, of our past communications. I voted the way I believed (and still do) was right. Your retaliation to me here on English Wiki was of a very, very bad tone. I'd like to tell you that you do not have to prove to anybody that you are a good photographer. You are a good photographer, one of the best here, yet it does not mean that some of your images (very, very few) cannot be opposed once in a blue Moon. I will completely avoid voting/commenting on your images in the feature because IMO your recent outbursts on oppose votes both here and on Commons show that you are not mature enough to take the opposes properly. - Well, the location of Mecca certainly seems like an interesting coincidence... I had a look on Google Earth and the Kaaba isn't exactly on the Golden Ratio between the north and south pole. It's off by about 20km (It is 12,358km from the south pole and 7,623.58km from the north pole by my calculations, but 7623.58 * 1.6180339887 = 12,335.21km). Now that definitely is close, but if it were really placed there by God's hand, wouldn't he have got it exactly right, and not just approximate? It's a mathematical constant, after all, and a creator intelligent and powerful enough to create the universe should be capable of being more precise ;-). Also, using Greenwich as a longitudinal reference point for calculating the Golden Ratio on the east-west axis seems a bit ridiculous considering the British used it as an arbitrary location of the prime meridian for their own timekeeping purposes in 1851! Unless you choose to believe that somehow God inspired them to place their Royal Observatory in a location that would point to the Kaaba based on the Golden Ratio? :-) Also, at the start when it showed all the Golden Ratios on the human body, I couldn't help but think that many of them didn't look like they had exactly the right ratios, but it moved so fast I couldn't tell for sure. In any case, they could only be approximations as there is natural variance in the human body. It might be coincidence that they are vaguely similar in ratio to the Golden Ratio. - The Kaaba was built a few thousand years ago and geographic activities could have contributed to the difference. That may by why the whole city of Makkah is considered holy rather than just the kaaba. - Agreed there is natural variance between humans and it would be impossible for all individuals to have their bodies with the exact ratio. But isn't it bewildering that the ratios approach the golden ratio? Take a look here and here for images which show the same illustration as that video. If humans came about by chance, where did this ratios come from? What about the golden ratio in nature? Take for instance the sunflower. The individual florets grow in two spirals extending out from the center. The first spiral has 21 arms, while the other has 34. Divide the two, and voila the golden ratio. Or take bees in a hive. Dividing the number of females to the number of males gives the golden mean. There are numerous other examples. How can such a ratio be present in so many unrelated areas short of it coming from a creator? - Sorry to cut in, but stumbled across this while closing an FP. Muhammad, I did end up viewing this as well some months back when you pointed it out to me, and while I don't remember all the details now enough rings true to assume it's the same clip. There's not much new there to me, I have seen similar things used by Christians to 'prove' their religion is the correct one, and similar things used by people to 'prove' for example that the Ancient Egyptians either had mystical powers or were guided or helped by extraterrestrials to build the pyramids.
- Not to be harsh, but I find it all rather silly. The point is that the people behind this stuff take whatever evidence serves their claims, stretch and contort things to fit in with what they're saying, and ignore all else (e.g., even if the Kaaba was exactly on the Golden ratio between the poles, well, then so is every other point at that latitude on the planet, and for that matter, so is every point at that southern latitude in the southern hemisphere - ultimately then, so what? Are they all specially chosen places by god?) Take your choice of which one to believe in, then use this special-pleading maths to 'prove' it. Surely believers shouldn't require their faith or beliefs to be 'proved' by some bogus mathematics?
- I'm not just being facetious here - for example a quote straight from the second site you reference above (which isn't obviously any sort of religious site) says "Curiously enough, you also have 2 hands, each with 5 digits, and your 8 fingers are each comprised of 3 sections. All Fibonacci numbers!" This is what I'm talking about. This sentence mentions 5 digits and then, just to fit their own argument, two words later forgets about the thumbs and claims you have 8 fingers. But fingers are simply a human definition which is far from consistent in usage within and between languages and cultures, so this is merely fudging reality to fit their preferences. This is what I'm talking about re their bogus maths.
- FWIW nature does often follow these simple mathematical rules such as the Fibonacci sequence and there's often good physical or biological reasons why. D'Arcy Wentworth Thompson is one well known early pioneer in this field and may be well worth you having a look at. - You can always trust a science teacher to dip in on a debate like this. :-) I agree with you Jjron. I had quite a few opinions that I intended to share but hadn't had a chance to as yet, but I might as well add those that you hadn't already mentioned. The fact that our finger bones get shorter at roughly the ratio of 1.6 doesn't seem particularly extraordinary to me. Our hands have evolved (or have been designed by God, if that is your belief) to grip objects. It only makes sense that each successive bone is shorter so that it can curl inwards to grip. For that reason I don't think it's particularly bewildering at all, it's just logical. In terms of natural selection, it makes sense that our bodies are the way they are, because they have been shaped over a very long period of time - if the bones were too long or too short, we would grip more poorly, and not survive as well as those with the right ratio of bone lengths in the hand.
- I can't find any respectable source that can confirm the ratio of male to female bees, but I suspect it is a myth - a virulent meme if you will. Untruthful ideas that sound interesting are more likely to be transmitted to others than ideas that are truthful but not interesting. My impression before googling it is that it would depend largely on the species of bee, but after looking, I did find this (a PDF document), which, if you look page 2 onwards, describes how it is completely wrong, and possibly originated in the Dan Brown book, The Da Vinci Code (which has been proven to be full of dodgy facts).
- As for the Kaaba not being exactly on the golden ratio due to 'geographical activities', I assume you mean things like tectonic plate movements? I had a look at the article and it suggests that the Arabian plate is moving at 20mm a year. Even with 3000 years, it would only have moved north 60 metres. And would God use Mecca as a signal for the golden ratio, knowing that it would not remain in the right place over time? In any case, it doesn't matter, because I agree with Jjron - you shouldn't need this sort of thing to convince you of the existence of God, but likewise, IMO you should use science and logic to question everything around you, including conventional ideas about religion and God. Just because billions of people believe something, it doesn't make it true. Obviously logic, evidence and science cannot disprove 'miracles' because miracles by most peoples' definition do not follow the laws of physics and logical consequence. - True, since the Bible/Qur'an does essentially say that humans are above all the other animals, why not use this special ratio to elevate us humans, too...? I certainly wouldn't complain if females outnumbered males. ;-) To expand slightly on what Jjron said before, it doesn't seem particularly impressive that your fingers, bones, etc are Fibonacci numbers. Since we're talking about small numbers, a full 50% of numbers between 1 and 10 ( 1, 2, 3, 5 and 8) are Fibonacci numbers. Hardly surprising then, that you can find aspects of a human hand that contain those numbers! (and as mentioned, there are many aspects of the human hand that do not contain Fibonacci numbers!) Your caption for Brighton Promenade is wrong. That is not an image of Brighton Promenade. It is an image of the service road below the promenade, which is used for supply and maintenance purposes for both under-arch commercial outlets and for the beach itself. You can just see the edge of the real promenade in the top left-hand corner. Don't take any notice of the description in any Wiki article, or indeed of what anyone tells you. What you show is not the promenade. As a scene purporting to be of the promenade this image reflects very poorly on Brighton. - Well, I think it's a fine image, and probably the best in the article (although the panorama of yours in Moshi is also good), but I don't know. I am sure it is not easy to get a detailed and high resolution image of the mountain from a distance due to haze, but I would prefer more context in the photo. It is hard to see if we're just looking at the tip of the mountain or most of it. I think it might struggle at FPC due to being an incomplete view, but it is still worth trying. - Wow, that is an interesting view. I guess because we always see the mountain from below, I never realised it had such volcano cone-shaped summit. Looking more carefully, I see that it is a similar view to a photo already in the article. I think yours is much better than that one, and should replace it in the article. Again though, because of the clouds, it is hard to know whether it extends far below or whether it flattens out. But I think that the second image is more striking.
