Watchlist

Hello Wikipedians,
Can someone explain to me what (+2,304) is on the "My watchlist" page? --Devinnnwashere (talk) 00:42, 17 September 2011 (UTC)

It refers to the number of letters added in the changes to that page in the last day. e.g. if a page was just "hello" and someone changed it to "hello there", it would show +6 because there were 6 new letters (including spaces). Negatives are deletions. —Soap— 00:46, 17 September 2011 (UTC)

Flickr

It seems like every time I post a picture from Flickr and source it correctly it gets deleted by a bot! What in the world am I doing wrong? --Devinnnwashere (talk) 01:35, 17 September 2011 (UTC)

Hi Devin. You have never uploaded an image at Wikipedia under this account. You have, however, uploaded images to the Wikimedia Commons, a separate, sister site also owned by the Wikimedia Foundation. This is very important to understand* because the sites have different image license concerns. All public domain images, and all images under a free license compatible with those used by both Wikipedia and the Commons should be uploaded to the Commons and not here so that all projects can use them. However, we do allow some non-free images here—if they meet our fair use criteria and are suitably tagged for that free use, and properly used in the manner claimed. Fair use images are totally unacceptable at the Commons. So my first thought is that you may have tried to claim fair use but done so there, rather than here. If your image uploads had been here, I could tell you more, but I am not an administrator at the Commons, so I cannot view deleted content. I can only see what is on your user talk page at the Commons and look at the deletion log there for the images, both of which indicate the images were not suitably free. It appears you did try to claim fair use, and also that you uploaded an image that is licensed "all rights reserved" at Flikr, and another because the upload was "Missing essential information: source and/or license". By the way, bots left notices on your talk page; human beings reviewed the images and deleted them. As suggested and linked in the notices on your Commons talk page, the proper place to ask about these matters is at the Commons:Help desk. • You may say "duh" to this but many people don't realize they have navigated to a different site when the click on a link here and find themselves at the Commons.

(edit conflict) The images you've uploaded are not released under licenses compatible with Wikipedia's. In order for an image from Flickr to be acceptable for upload to Wikipedia, it must be released under a CC-BY or CC-BY-SA (see WP:Creative Commons#Types of Creative Commons licenses). The images you've uploaded, such as the one of Chris Crocker, were not released under this license, which is why the bot removed them. – GorillaWarfare (talk) 02:04, 17 September 2011 (UTC)

Chris Crocker Image

Hiya. Unfortunately I have had to delete that image from Wikipedia - we can only accept images that are freely licensed for reuse. On Flickr that image is tagged as "All Rights Reserved"; that means the copyright owner retains the rights to the image and does not allow others to reuse it (outside of Flickr). You can read more about this at Wikipedia:Image use policy#Copyright and licensing.

What you might be able to do is contact the person and ask them if they would be interested in changing to a license compatible with Wikipedia - this would then allow you to re-upload it.

Unfortunately no.. it's a bit annoying I admit, but we need explicit licenses - i.e. people saying "yes, you can use this freely". I'd get in touch with the guy if you can - there is a license agreement he can sent to WP:OTRS to release an image freely, and I have had success in the past just by asking :) --Errant ^(chat!) 23:22, 19 September 2011 (UTC)

Fair use rationale for File:PandoraScreenshot.png

Thanks for uploading or contributing to File:PandoraScreenshot.png. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use. Suggestions on how to do so can be found here.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box.
