This is a weird case: we all make mistakes, myself possibly more so than others, but do you know how you came to have these coordinates for this article, which is a whole continent away from the point given? If it's a data source problem, maybe I can help track down other cases from the same source. -- The Anome (talk) 03:30, 6 January 2010 (UTC)

Just a stupid mistake on my part, I'm afraid. To rapidly geocode the stations along that line, I prepared a {{coord}} template with all the relevant parameters filled in but with dummy coordinates, so that all I had to do was paste in that template and replace the dummy coordinates with the correct ones. In that particular case, I saved the edit without actually replacing the dummies with the real coordinates. I've fixed it, and in the future I'll use a string of x's or something as the dummy coordinates so that such errors will be easier to spot immediately. Deor (talk) 13:10, 6 January 2010 (UTC)
By searching for the dummy latitude, I found three other instances where I made the same damned mistake and have corrected them as well. Deor (talk) 13:26, 6 January 2010 (UTC)

J.R.R. Tolkien

Hello Deor. Thank you for defending the J.R.R. Tolkien article against the ill-considered, not to say rude, attack by Andymcgrath. I hope I have now achieved a solution which both meets our desire for readability and avoids any further attack. Any comment from you would be welcomed. Meanwhile, thank you once again for your earlier assistance. Old Father Time (talk) 13:00, 19 January 2010 (UTC)

Ought to

Why not "We ought not to suppose that love is necessary for marriage," instead of "We ought not suppose that love is necessary for marriage"?

--68.219.47.248 (talk) 09:28, 17 January 2010 (UTC)

See Modal verb. In English, modal auxiliaries are followed by bare infinitives (without to). Deor (talk) 09:50, 17 January 2010 (UTC)

So you'd say "We ought do that" instead of "We ought to do that"? Michael Hardy (talk) 22:55, 21 January 2010 (UTC)

I explained elsewhere in that thread that ought seems not to be used as a modal auxiliary in the positive construction in MnE (although there are those who parse the combination "ought to" as a modal auxiliary or equivalent to one, which doesn't, however, explain how the to can be omitted in the negative construction). J.R.R. Tolkien: "General American"

Hello Deor. I wondered about "General American" being in a smaller typeface: I could see no reason for it, and I found it a distraction to my eye. Do you know why it would have been set like that? Can you cast any light on the "standard" mentioned by Riley Hicks ( 02:02, 22 January 2010)? Old Father Time (talk) 13:55, 22 January 2010 (UTC)

I think Riley was misled by the output of templates like {{IPA-en}}, which produce things like "/ðɪs/" for use in parenthetical indications of pronunciation. Since in this case "General American" is used as part of the regular text rather than as a label of that sort, I agree that the reduction in size is unnecessary and distracting (which is why I undid it). The Wodehouse

Thank you for your attention to The Wodehouse. I wonder if you are in a position to take a photograph? BrainyBabe (talk) 16:41, 31 January 2010 (UTC)

I'm afraid I'm on the wrong continent for that. There are some pictures of the farmhouse and the mill on Geograph that could be uploaded to Commons, but apparently no one has been able to get close enough to photograph the big house. You might poke around elsewhere on the Web to see if you can find any other pictures with compatible licenses. Deor (talk) 16:50, 31 January 2010 (UTC)
Thanks anyway. I'll look around again. BrainyBabe (talk) 16:54, 31 January 2010 (UTC)

Link to Barbaro hoax?

An IP has repeatedly tried to insert claims about the Serra family to the Albergo article in such a way that it looks like the already placed source discusses the Serra family having an albergo. They've also posted a lot on Palazzo Serra di Cassano. Checking one source on the latter article's talk page does show the Serra were one of 28 (not 54) Genoese alberghi. OTOH, the IP (and their new nick) are also trying to refer to a blog that is the latest iteration of the Barbaro hoax, so some extra eyes would be appreciated. Reference desks

My response was the best I could offer given that the OP didn't explain what they wanted, malformed the link. It looked to me as though they were hustling for support on an issue they were having on Wikipedia talk:Manual of Style. When they clarified their request I was able to direct them to wiktionary. Thanks User:Curious Cactus 21:09, 4 March 2010 (UTC)

The link supplied by the questioner led to the usage he was asking about; I fail to see how that was "malformed". Deor (talk) 21:15, 4 March 2010 (UTC)

German railway stations still missing coordinates

Wow! That was fast! Thank you! -- The Anome (talk) 20:38, 11 March 2010 (UTC)

You're quite welcome. They're a lot easier to locate than dirt-strip airports in countries that aren't Google mapped very well. Deor (talk) 21:12, 11 March 2010 (UTC)

I have reverted your redirect pending discussion of how to deal with the material on that page and whether redirecting to Grays is the best solution. Rjm at sleepers (talk) 08:53, 27 March 2010 (UTC)

Your recent edit comment reads "I'm looking at the Google map and find it hard to believe that the sea is not visible from Coast Rd. at Bacton Green or from the stretch between Sea Palling & Waxham, for instance".

There be dykes. That's why my edit comment specified OS maps. It's geographically obvious if you can see the surveyed contours. Google does not give those. -Arb. (talk) 23:55, 29 March 2010 (UTC)

Woodside School

Hi - I'm not majorly inclined to change my close (especially as the article was improved whilst the AfD was going on) but I'd be quite happy to see it at DRV so that more people can comment (and I'm happy to comment there myself). Of course, being closed as NC doesn't prevent either a merge discussion being held on the talkpage or indeed another AfD in due course. Black Kite 23:52, 3 April 2010 (UTC)

OK, I understand. I'll think further on the matter and let you know what I decide. Deor (talk) 00:06, 4 April 2010 (UTC)

Metrolink station coordinates

I was just wondering where you are getting coordinates for the Metrolink (Southern California) stations from? Is there some source that I'm not aware of? (Sorry if I sound like a complete idiot I don't know much about how the coordinates templates and stuff work.) --TorriTorri(Talk to me!) 23:17, 7 April 2010 (UTC)

I just used EarthTools and followed the satellite view of the railroad tracks from station to station. (There are labels on the Google maps that EarthTools shows—usually pretty accurate for stations, though they may be a little off.) Another source that allows you to just copy the coordinates once you've zeroed in on a location is GeoLocator. If you're interested in such things, you may want to see Wikipedia:Obtaining geographic coordinates and Wikipedia:WikiProject Geographical coordinates. Deor (talk) 23:49, 7 April 2010 (UTC)
Thanks! --TorriTorri(Talk to me!) 23:57, 7 April 2010 (UTC)
Neither of those two sites worked for me. I tried to find the coordinates of a neighborhood called "Eagle Estates" in Medford, New York to experiment, and it gave me nothing. GeoLocator didn't even let me see Medford itself. EarthTools did, but it didn't give me coordinates for any other section of Medford besides the resturaunt that used to be a hotel west of the railroad station. ----DanTD (talk) 14:55, 3 May 2010 (UTC)
I've tried doing what you suggest with a lot of on-line maps, and the coordinates never change from where I enter them. In the case of Eagle Estates, I filled in the search function for EarthTools and got locations all over the country, and GeoLocator kept telling me it couldn't find anything I wanted. At least I can see how EarthTools is finding the area. I suppose I can try this on a couple of hick towns in Florida I wrote about recently. ----DanTD (talk) 20:50, 3 May 2010 (UTC)
UPDATE: It didn't work. I got an error message. ----DanTD (talk) 20:57, 3 May 2010 (UTC)

Evidence

If you have evidence that that AOL IP is A Nobody, I'll be happy to run with it. If you don't have evidence, the accusations don't help.—Kww(talk) 17:33, 16 May 2010 (UTC)

To me, it couldn't be more obvious. As I said on Sir Fozzie's talk page, he's used AOL before (as here, when he was supposed to have exercised his right to vanish). Even the tone of the writing is distinctive. I'm also sure that he's been e-mailing his ARS buddies, who have shown up at that AfD in force. Can I prove it? No. Do I feel unjustified in asserting that the two otherwise-editless IPs who showed up at the AfD are him. Also no. Deor (talk) 17:50, 16 May 2010 (UTC)
And if this doesn't convince you, I don't know what would. Deor (talk) 17:55, 16 May 2010 (UTC)

Blackberry Problem

Hi! I found a solution to the blackberry 4.5 problem with accessing Wikipedia from the help desk.
You can use http://en.m.wikipedia.org on your phone - its the mobile version!
~QwerpQwertus |_Talk_| |_Contribs_| 21:16, 21 May 2010 (UTC)

Thanks for the update; I'm glad that there's a solution to the user's problem. Unfortunately, I'm old-fashioned and have never considered owning a Blackberry (I'm not even sure what one is or how it differs from other tiny bits of technology) or a cell phone or any of a number of other modern "conveniences", so I have no need of the solution myself. Inniverse

Please don't be coy. If you suspect it's someone that is evading a block or similar things, name the editor in your comments. That gives the checkuser something to go on. Without a starting point a lot of checkusers come back dry because the checkuser didn't know what to look for.—Kww(talk) 20:23, 5 June 2010 (UTC)

Well, I've considered Ikip/Okip and Benjiboi, too, but there's just not enough behavioral evidence to accuse anyone. Unless it was a deliberate ploy to look like a newbie, I can't see any of the three calling attention to himself by making two inept cut-and-paste moves on the first day of editing with the account. One would think that a scrutiny-avoiding account would try to fly more under the radar. For all I know, it's a sock of some blocked user I'm not familiar with; I'm not an expert on such matters. Nevertheless, there does seem to be a number of people who think something is fishy here, as his talk page indicates. Deor (talk) 20:38, 5 June 2010 (UTC)
Fair enough. I had discarded Ikip, and agree it probably isn't Benjiboi either. I thought you had a stronger suspicion than that.—Kww(talk) 20:44, 5 June 2010 (UTC)
Deor, FYI you may want to be aware of this. Montanabw(talk) 07:57, 10 June 2010 (UTC)

Frieze

Thanks for your contribution... I'm intrigued. Is it possible to expand this slightly? Say with an example "issue". This might fit in her bio too? Victuallers (talk) 20:58, 9 June 2010 (UTC)

I'll give the matter some further thought. It seemed worthy of mention that Beard and Henderson, needing a central example around which to develop their popular guide to the nature of "classics" and our relationship to Greek and Roman antiquity, chose the Bassae frieze; but I didn't want to give the matter undue weight in the article. They cover many related issues—the disputed arrangement of the panels in the BM display, the cultural appropriation involved in the frieze's discovery and sale, the development of the temple itself as a tourist attraction, and a variety of others. I really need to reread the book to see what might be appropriate to mention in the frieze article. Certainly, if nothing else, it can be used as a source and reference for expanding some of the material already there, as well as a guide to further sources. Deor (talk) 09:44, 10 June 2010 (UTC)

Thx, do consider adding a tadge extra as your explanation (above) gives some concreteness to the link you have spotted. As you note. At present it seemsd over important as the article is only a start. But I'm sure it will get moved as the article grows (I hope). Victuallers (talk) 12:23, 10 June 2010 (UTC)

Reviewer permission

Hello. Your account has been granted the "reviewer" userright, allowing you to review other users' edits on certain flagged pages. Pending changes, also known as flagged protection, is currently undergoing a two-month trial scheduled to end 15 August 2010.

Reviewers can review edits made by users who are not autoconfirmed to articles placed under pending changes. Pending changes is applied to only a small number of articles, similarly to how semi-protection is applied but in a more controlled way for the trial. The list of articles with pending changes awaiting review is located at Special:OldReviewedPages.

When reviewing, edits should be accepted if they are not obvious vandalism or BLP violations, and not clearly problematic in light of the reason given for protection (see Wikipedia:Reviewing process). More detailed documentation and guidelines can be found here.
