B minor structure[edit]

Thank you for your improvements to Mass in B minor structure. I am trying to learn, language also. I used "base" a lot - where you said "basis", possibly because I saw others use it. The article underwent a peer review by some experts, and nobody mentioned that. Can you explain why you think it should not be used? --Gerda Arendt (talk) 07:47, 2 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Base vs Basis and Based On[edit]

I am not sure how I should reply to your question. In the real world I would email you but Wikipedia doesn't work that way. Should I post the answer on YOUR User Talk page? Or if I post it here, how will you see it? Is my Talk page on your watchlist perhaps? I am rather confused. But anyway, I will try to answer your question.

If something is the "base of" something, it is physically at the bottom, not a SOURCE.

The compound verb "to be based [up]on" is very similar to "to be derived from".
A later work can be based on an earlier work, which is its basis (not its base).

So one would say:

"The large stones are the base of the pyramid" but usually
NOT "The pyramid is based on the large stones."

You COULD say "The pyramid at the park is based on the famous pyramids in Egypt."

It is perfectly idiomatic in English to say

"The Gratias is based on the second movement of Cantata 29" or
"Bach based the Gratias on the second movement of Cantata 29"

But...

NOT "The 2nd movement of Bach's Cantata 29 is the base for the Gratias."

The cantata movement cannot be found hiding underneath the Gratias!

Also, you could write:

"The second movement of Cantata 29 was the basis for the Gratias" but it sounds a little funny in an article about the Mass in B Minor, because the subject of that sentence is Cantata 29 whereas it should be the Gratias.
