Thanks for your :lv:en: assistance![edit]

...on my Language reference desk query. I don't often work with Latvian texts or content, so have not developed any familiarity with the language. The best I can do is ask for particular confirmation of my preliminary treatments. As you're the first speaker of Latvian I've encountered here, I really appreciate your pitching in! -- Deborahjay 13:12, 23 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

That's OK. Latvian is not the most usual language... will try to help. --Daarznieks 15:22, 26 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

WWII memorial inscription in Latvia[edit]

I'd appreciate your assistance (again :-) in understanding a particular phrase on a memorial monument, this one in the Bikernieki Forest near Riga. The text (in Russian as well as Latvian), in provisional translation to English, reads: "In the Bikernieki Forest, from 1941 to 1944, the German Fascist occupiers cruelly murdered 46,500 [peaceful?] civilians" (the words after the figure being the focus of my query):

  • ...46500 MIERĪGU IEDZĪVOTĀJU

A photo of the monument can be viewed here (Cat. No. 42824). Thanks for any light you can shed on this! -- Deborahjay 09:39, 24 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

    • "mierīgie iedzīvotāji" is a phrase in Latvian which distinguishes general citizens from militaries. Thus the phrase will mean "46 500 civilians". But I've got suspicion that here is meant not simply civilians but "peaceful civilians" (because there is used ending "mierīgu" instead of the usual "mierīgo"), stressing that they were peaceful in their habits. A bit exagerated but in a way - justified. In Russian the ending of the word can't be flexed in those two forms - thus in Russian this sentence can be understood both ways. Let's write in English: "...cruelly murdered 46 500 peaceful civilians" and nobody will say that it is incorrect. --Daarznieks 15:19, 26 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

So you've assessed the Russian in the bargain! -- where I come from, we call this "value added" translating and esteem it greatly among our colleagues :-)
In cases of a dual-language original, I consider the local language to be primary. Having no provenance other than this photograph dated 1997, I would suspect that the monument dates from the Soviet period, which would explain the inclusion of Russian, and possibly also the lack of text in a Jewish language (such as Yiddish or Hebrew.
I greatly appreciate your careful explanation of the above, with its regard for the wider historical context. It's my belief that rather than remaining mute in the terrible aftermath of warfare, we had best use what tools we have to teach about it responsibly, if that's the least — and unfortunately, sometimes the most — we can do. With thanks and best regards, Deborahjay 12:06, 28 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, I am helping with pleasure :) --Daarznieks 15:10, 28 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Corey Clark Infobox[edit]

Hi. I'm not that good with Infoboxes, and the photo in the Corey Clark infobox is too big, and my attempts to reduced it failed. I noticed you in the History page of the Infobox page. Can you help? Thanks. Nightscream 01:43, 22 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Labyrinths[edit]

Hi Daarznieks! great work on creating the Stone labyrinths of Bolshoi Zayatsky Island page, but I notice that the wording is very similar to the Wondermondo page on the same subject. That page is ⓒ 2009 Gatis Pāvils. To be included in Wikipedia the wording should be changed so that it summarises that page without quoting it word-for-word. Otherwise it will simply be deleted, which would be a shame. SiGarb | (Talk) 23:31, 5 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Wondermondo is my own Website and text is written by me. Copyright notice of my Website (http://www.wondermondo.com/_website.htm) states: Texts from this website are licensed through Creative Commons Non-Commercial Share Alike license. If you use any text from this website, you must provide an explicit link: Gatis Pavils, www.wondermondo.com. You are not allowed to have direct earnings from my work, nor to copy of it onto another website using Google Adsense or similar program. You are allowed to copy it on an educational site such as Wikipedia, if you provide explicit link to my website as stated above.
Still - if this is not acceptable, I can spend some time to change the wording accordingly. Another thing - I can change the copyright symbol in my Website to Creative Commons - what could be more sensible. Daarznieks (talk) 19:25, 8 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The Lost World (Conan Doyle novel)‎[edit]

Thanks for your edit. Could you please add a source for the change? I think it has been the subject of disagreements before. Cheers. Span (talk) 13:24, 25 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Did it. In fact there can't be found any sources which would say that "Lost world" is inspired by Roraima Plateau except for recent lower quality tourist booklets. Daarznieks (talk) 20:34, 25 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for adding more detail. Cheers. Span (talk) 00:52, 26 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Harwood Hole[edit]

Thanks for your comments on the Talk page for Harwood Hole. You are right, so I'm not sure why you did not make a corection to the article. It's done now. Ian mckenzie (talk) 22:22, 1 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Latvian help needed[edit]

Hello Daarznieks, I'm contacting you because we need some Latvian translators to help with the deployment of the new VisualEditor on lv.wikipedia. There are help pages, user guides, and description pages that need translating, as well as the interface itself. The translating work is going on over on MediaWiki: Translation Central. I also need help with a personal message for the Latvian Wikipedians. If you are able to help in any way, either reply here, or head over to TranslationCentral. Thanks for your time, PEarley (WMF) (talk) 18:22, 16 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Well, I have not too much time but will try my best to give some help from time to time. Give me some tasks, will do my best to help. Yours, --Daarznieks (talk) 09:58, 20 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Daarznieks, I understand about time constraints. Any help, even small, is appreciated. We're doing pretty well on the interface translation for Latvian, which is great. Here's some links to the important Help pages, simply click "translate this page" at the top of each and select "Latvian" to get started:
  1. the User Guide, Latvian 70% complete.
  2. Portal/Description page, Latvian 0% complete (this one is important because the translation can become the main VE page on lv.wiki, which doesn't have a VE general description page yet).
  3. FAQ, Latvian is 0% complete. Any progress you can make with these three will help lv.wiki users get up to date on VE. Let me know if you have any questions/issues, and thanks for helping! PEarley (WMF) (talk) 21:16, 20 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Colonia del Sacramento[edit]

I just reviewed the article Colonia del Sacramento and made a few edits to improve sentence structure and clarity, but I came across the following sentence in the section "Urban fabric" which I do not understand. I discovered that you wrote the sentence, so I'm asking you.

""The Portuguese Old City - 16 ha large Barrio Histórico - was enclosed by a fortification wall across the peninsula in the site of present day Calle Ituzaingó."

What is "16 ha large Barrio Histórico"? I know what "Barrio Histórico" is. What is "16 ha large"?CorinneSD (talk) 16:50, 15 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Most likely my weak English is to blame. I meant "historical centre which is named Barrio Histórico and is 16 ha large" but most likely failed at something. Daarznieks (talk) 17:48, 15 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]
O.K., but what is "16 ha large"? Do you mean "16 hectares in size"?CorinneSD (talk) 21:14, 15 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, exactly :) Daarznieks (talk) 08:35, 16 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Wondermondo[edit]

Hello Daarznieks. Are you by any chance the guy who runs the Wondermondo website? Number 57 21:01, 19 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, that's me Daarznieks (talk) 09:18, 20 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Then can I please ask that you stop adding links to your website and that you remove all the ones you have already added. This is effectively WP:LINKSPAMming. Thanks, Number 57 10:20, 20 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Ouch, did not know about this rule. Please note that rather many have been added by other people, not me. I am going through and removing mine. Daarznieks (talk) 21:59, 20 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
No problem, and thanks for being so understanding about the rule. Cheers, Number 57 23:30, 20 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
