New races[edit]

That's really great work getting done. As soon as I can, I'll see what I can come up with for trainers etc. in the Woodlawn. Handicapper. If you want to find trainers/owners, etc., use the Google News Archive Search at this link. You need to do one item at a time, i.e. race name comma, trainer, then separately for the owner. Also you may have to try with a "d" = trained or owned. Sometimes it can take quite a while but its the best source I know of on the web. Handicapper (talk) 17:29, 10 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

You are now a Reviewer[edit]

Hello. Your account has been granted the "reviewer" userright, allowing you to review other users' edits on certain flagged pages. Pending changes, also known as flagged protection, is currently undergoing a two-month trial scheduled to end 15 August 2010.

Reviewers can review edits made by users who are not autoconfirmed to articles placed under pending changes. Pending changes is applied to only a small number of articles, similarly to how semi-protection is applied but in a more controlled way for the trial. The list of articles with pending changes awaiting review is located at Special:OldReviewedPages.

When reviewing, edits should be accepted if they are not obvious vandalism or BLP violations, and not clearly problematic in light of the reason given for protection (see Wikipedia:Reviewing process). More detailed documentation and guidelines can be found here.

If you do not want this userright, you may ask any administrator to remove it for you at any time. Courcelles (talk) 04:34, 17 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

  • Thank You so much, I am trying hard to get some uniformity and completeness throughout the project but it covers a lot of stakes races and horses. I apreciate you noticing!--Craiglduncan (talk) 16:45, 4 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
  • I will add InfoBoxes to the rest of the Derby Pages you've started if that's OK?--Craiglduncan (talk) 16:46, 4 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, I'm the webmaster for Stronach Corp and I noticed you have made edits to Laurel Park Racecourse and to Pimlico Racecourse. I was hoping you could assist me in obtaining those permissions and include me in the WikiProject Thoroughbred racing.

Conference maps[edit]

Hi Craig -- thanks for the note. I've decided that given the inconsistencies between different athletic conference overview maps, I'd like to try to find a consensus on it. I don't think they all have to (or should) look the same as far as colors go, but I think it would make sense if they followed the same rules (regarding the location markers, football/non-football members, future additions/defections, etc.). I posted a discussion here: Athletic conference overview maps and their lack of consistency. I'd appreciate your input when you have the time - thanks! Mdak06 (talk) —Preceding undated comment added 22:12, 14 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

  • I agree with you 100% I just want the ACC to look like the other big Conferences. I will add my input now. Thanks for beginning a discussion.--Craiglduncan (talk) 22:47, 14 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry I din't notice you that you asked me to change the map Craig, you edited my userpage instead of commenting on the talk page so I never got a pop up. Oh well, its fixed now. Oxbow[edit]

Where is the NTRA poll? URL?? (I'll check the article if you linked it there, no worries) Bummer on the rest; we can't use wiki to source wiki, but also our own number-crunching (however accurate) is also a bit problematic per WP:OR. I think as soon as I get this last bit sourced, I am going to put the article up for GA, are you OK with supporting the effort? (I've gotten to the point where I kind of like to get the green plus on the articles where I've spent a lot of time, remember we did it for Shackleford too!) Montanabw(talk) 18:36, 11 June 2013 (UTC) Follow up: Found NTRA press release on the poll, didn't realize it just came out.. Montanabw(talk) 20:56, 14 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Craig, can you find me (WITH SOURCE) the Beyer speed figures for oxbow in the Belmont? Looked all the places I know and cannot find, you are better at finding this info than I am. Just pop the number with the url for the source either here, at article talk, or in the article itself. I'd be grateful. Seems to be the last missing piece and then I'm running it up to GA -- User:EricCorbett thinks we could even take it to FAC, but I'm not sure I'm ready for that "drahmahz" zone yet. (though it would be fun to have it FA and maybe TFA right before the Breeder's Cup, hmmm...) Thanks! Montanabw(talk) 20:55, 14 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

  • I can not locate Oxbow's Belmont Speed Figure right now. There are articles pointing out that the winner Palace Malice earned a 98 Beyer Speed figure in the race and I heard on TV that Oxbow earned a 96. I probably won't have documentation until the Thursday before his next race. On the Wednesday prior to his next race Post Positions and morning line odds will be assigned. The following day three national publications will produce for all the runners in the race, their "Past Performances." Oxbow is pointing toward the $600,000 Grade 2 Jim Dandy Stakes on July 27 at Saratoga Race Course.
No problem, we can add it then, then! I saw some really fascinating analysis on how he got a 106 in the Preakness despite the slower speed, apparently the track was slow all day, other horses in other races were struggling. Interesting. By the way, I'm inviting you to User:Montanabw/Sandbox_4 where I am working on research on Oxbow's all but full brother (same sire out of full sister) Paynter, who has a fascinating back story. You are good at doing the race summaries and this horse won the Haskell and was second in last year's Belmont. (and it's in a sandbox, so you can just add a rough URL to your sources and I can do the prettifying). Montanabw(talk) 20:42, 15 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  • You are right. Forgive me those are Daily Racing Form Speed figures. All the rest of the numbers we have been using are Brisnet Spped figures, see: [1]. They are two different sets of numbers and the are both similar but figured on different formulas. I think we should wait until 07/24/13 to put in his correct Brisnet speed figure. It was announced yesterday that Oxbow will run in the Haskell Invitational on 07/28. We can update once those Past Performances come out. Sorry for the confusion! --Craiglduncan (talk) 22:49, 11 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  • Question: Beyer Speed Figure says it's a DRF calculation, should we use your DRF chart throughout INSTEAD of Brisnet? Looks like while the charts are consistent as far as better/worse, the numbers assigned are quite different. Is there a quality or popularity or "blessed by officialdom" thing on one over the other? (I'm not much of a research-first bettor, I'm more of a "this one looks pretty today" bettor, so I know squat about all this). Montanabw(talk) 23:02, 11 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  • Beyer Speed Figure were the very first speed figures invented by Andrew Beyer back in the 1970's. But there are a total of three different figures that are used. If you would prefer the Beyer than we will need to make some changes (I may have referred to it as a Beyer Speed Figure while writing part of the article.--Craiglduncan (talk) 23:18, 11 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  • I'm not sure if it was you or me, the important thing was that we have a link to Beyer Speed Figure, but I don't think we have articles on any other system for Thoroughbreds (there is an article on the Quarter Horse equivalent, though). I don't know enough about these calculations (other than what they are for and why they are cool) to have a preference for one system over the other. Can you maybe explain to me what the deal is; and if this means that we either need to a) expand and rename the Beyer article to be about all three systems; or b) if the DRF numbers now are still "Beyer" numbers, and switch the article (later, after it gets the FAC star) to that source?? Montanabw(talk) 16:54, 12 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Pony!
Congratulations! For your hard work on Oxbow (horse), which now has FIVE support votes at FAC, you have received a pony! Ponies are cute, intelligent, cuddly, friendly (most of the time, though with notable exceptions), promote good will, encourage patience, and enjoy carrots. Treat your pony with respect and he will be your faithful friend! Montanabw(talk) 18:11, 11 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

And the madness begins[edit]

Went crazy and did the FAC for Oxbow. Watchlist. Wikipedia:Featured article candidates/Oxbow (horse)/archive1. Yeah, I'm nuts, but am blaming User:Eric Corbett, it was his idea. (LOL) Montanabw(talk) 23:01, 25 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

  • Who determines if & when it actually becomes a FAC?--Craiglduncan (talk) 23:27, 25 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
LOL, you asked. See WP:FA, that said, basically, you put it up, everyone at FAC who cares goes over and picks at every hole they can find, and then if you get at least three reviewers to prove they went through it with a fine-toothed comb (as evidenced by all the nitpicky things they find) and then vote Support, you usually get it passed -- One of the FA gurus reviews the nomination and usually will approve it. For an example of the process, see my W.R. Brown FAC. It passed, and was my first almost-solo FAC. I will note that the FAC for Thoroughbred was a bit more hellish, but it was a much more complex article and, luckily, a team effort! Montanabw(talk) 22:01, 26 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

by the way, do you want me to add you as a co-nominator? That kind of means you get credit for your work, but also take the heat for complaints; I mentioned you as a member of the team working on the article, but just me and Froggerlaura for co-nom. Be glad to add you if you want, you did a lot of work. Montanabw(talk) 22:05, 26 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

  • Would Love that only because Oxbow made me $7,000 this year and was a special tribute to my Dad that passed away at age 74 in March. Long Story but we bet on Oxbow and won $365 the last day my two kids saw my Dad in January in the Lecomte Stakes because he wore Sergeant stripes on his Silks. My dad was a First Sergeant in the US Army for 21 years including four tours in foreign wars. The day after his funeral on March 16th we bet 3 horses over Oxbow over all in the Rebel Stakes and won the Tri, the Exacta and two $10 show tickets for $1,600. LOST about $200 on him in the Derby but he redeemed himself in the Preakness Stakes when we won $4,500 because nobody believed in him and he was at such long odds. In the Belmont Stakes we won $900 in a simple Tri. He helped me pay for new storm windows in our entire house and an entire semester at College for my Daughter. My family loves that horse. It would be an honor to be a co-nominator. Thank You--Craiglduncan (talk) 22:17, 26 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Great story! You got it! Montanabw(talk) 23:49, 26 June 2013 (UTC) Follow up: What has surprised me is how little respect this horse gets in general, particularly over Orb, who the New York Times just seems to pant over even though he has lost two in a row. FYI, speaking of tough and interesting, I just put up Oxbow's almost-full brother Paynter (horse) live a couple days ago. Could use some Beyer Speed figures and sources for same, if you can find them...? Montanabw(talk) 23:54, 26 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  • Montanabw - Oxbow's speed figure for the Belmont was a 94. Here is the chart that the number came from [2] the speed figure is located just after the words Belmont-G1. I hope this helps. Is there anything I can do to push the FAC ? Is there a place to vote or lobby?--Craiglduncan (talk) 19:04, 11 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  • A question on speed figures: One is that the speed index numbers there are different from your ones from the Brisnet source used for the rest, (by a LOT) which are different from Equibase. Thus, which is the "real" one?? Montanabw(talk) 22:39, 11 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  • And on the FAC, not much to do at this point other than to watchlist and be on the lookout for trolls or vandals on the article itself; FAC is a criteria evaluation against a set standard, not a popularity contest. But usually with at least three support votes, the FA delegates will promote it. We have five, and one from a FAC regular who is notoriously fussy (and who I got in a pissing match with about something else right about the same time, no less), so I think we're golden. I pinged the supporters as I answered each of their questions or nitpicks (did you read the FAC?? It truly is a gauntlet) so they checked in a bit faster. I also gently pinged a FAC delegate now to let them know we probably have one ready to promote. If nothing happens by the end of the week, I'll ping some more. But I'm next going to take Paynter (horse) to just GA (too much work for FA at the moment), so if you want to peek at that one and see if you have something to add (with sources, please!) feel free. Montanabw(talk) 22:39, 11 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

We're all sort of famous now...[edit]

Wikipedia Signpost notes promotion of Oxbow. Say, how many FAs have you worked on? just curious. Thinking it might be fun to nominate this one for TFA during the Breeder's Cup, presuming he runs in it... thoughts? Montanabw(talk) 21:31, 25 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Main Page appearance: Oxbow (horse)[edit]

This is a note to let the main editors of Oxbow (horse) know that the article will be appearing as today's featured article on May 17, 2014. If this article needs any attention or maintenance, it would be preferable if that could be done before its appearance on the Main Page. If you prefer that the article appear as TFA on a different date, or not at present, please ask Bencherlite (talk · contribs). You can view the TFA blurb at Wikipedia:Today's featured article/May 17, 2014. If it needs tweaking, or if it needs rewording to match improvements to the article between now and its main page appearance, please edit it, following the instructions at Wikipedia:Today's featured article/requests/instructions. The blurb as it stands now is below:

Oxbow winning the Preakness Stakes, 2013

Oxbow (foaled 2010) is an American Thoroughbred racehorse best known for winning the 2013 Preakness Stakes. A bay colt sired by Awesome Again, a winner of the Breeders' Cup Classic and out of a full sister to Tiznow, another Breeders' Cup Classic winner, he was sold as a yearling at Keeneland for $250,000. Oxbow is owned by Brad Kelley of Calumet Farm, was trained by D. Wayne Lukas, and was ridden in his Triple Crown races by Gary Stevens. His Preakness win was Calumet Farm's first win in a Triple Crown race in 45 years and breeder Richard Santulli's first win in a Triple Crown classic race. It also was Stevens' first Triple Crown win since 2001, following his return to riding in early 2013 after a seven-year retirement, and Lukas' first Triple Crown win since 2000. Oxbow's second-place finish in the Belmont Stakes in June made him only the third horse to have $1 million in purse wins for 2013. Later in the season, he was pulled up shortly after finishing fourth in the Haskell Invitational, whereupon he was found to have suffered a soft tissue injury, was taken out of competition for the remainder of his three-year-old season, and retired to stud in October 2013.
