Recent changes

  • Superprotect has been removed. [1]
  • You can now switch between the wikitext editor and the visual editor without saving. You will not lose the changes you have made. [2]
  • JSON dumps of the production search indexes are now available. They can be imported to Elasticsearch. [3]

Problems

  • Some translations for the Thanks and Echo extensions were missing. Translators have been asked to help and this should be solved soon. [4]

Changes this week

  • Thumbnails of 16-bit TIFF files will be displayed properly. Before, this didn't work. [5]
  • The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from November 10. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis from November 11. It will be on all Wikipedias from November 12 (calendar).

WikiCup 2015: The results

WikiCup 2015 is now in the books! Congrats to our finalists and winners, and to everyone who took part in this year's competition.

This year's results were an exact replica of last year's competition. For the second year in a row, the 2015 WikiCup champion is Smithsonian Institution Godot13 (submissions) (FP bonus points). All of his points were earned for an impressive 253 featured pictures and their associated bonus points (5060 and 1695, respectively). His entries constituted scans of currency from all over the world and scans of medallions awarded to participants of the U.S. Space program. Wales Cwmhiraeth (submissions) came in second place; she earned by far the most bonus points (4082), for 4 featured articles, 15 good articles, and 147 DYKs, mostly about in her field of expertise, natural science. Belarus Cas Liber (submissions), a finalist every year since 2010, came in third, with 2379 points.

Our newcomer award, presented to the best-performing new competitor in the WikiCup, goes to United States Rationalobserver (submissions). Everyone should be very proud of the work they accomplished. We will announce our other award winners soon.

The WikiCup judges will be back in touch over the coming months, and we hope to see you all in the 2016 competition. Graciano Rocchigiani / declined RfPP

Greetings. I recently tried to get the article for Graciano Rocchigiani protected, since an old "friend" of mine (under yet another IP) has made a beeline for it by reverting my cleanup edits. In fact, you recently had to PP two articles to ward them off: 1, 2. My RfPP for Rocchigiani was declined on the basis that the IP had not been given a warning. However, this is what tends to happen whenever anyone interacts with them: 3, 4, 5, etc. etc. It's always the same old diatribe—falsely labelling my edits as vandalism (when they themselves are not averse to a bit of actual vandalism: 6), not adhering to basic MOS, insisting on one format without consensus, etc. A generic message on their talk page is highly unlikely to achieve anything, so I'd like to take you up on that offer you made about the "liberal use" of SPP. Would be much appreciated. Or, since their edit pattern is so predictable, would it not be advisable for me to open up an SPI each time? Mac Dreamstate (talk) 04:03, 4 November 2015 (UTC)

Recent changes

  • You can now see how many editors are using a gadget on a wiki on Special:GadgetUsage. [8]
  • If you are using the mobile version of Wikipedia, you can now see Wikidata descriptions under article titles in search results. [9]
  • Editing conflicts are now detected when you edit on a mobile device. Before, this did not work properly on mobile. [10]

Problems

  • On October 26 the Wikimedia sites went down for ten minutes. [11]

Changes this week

  • The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from November 3. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis from November 4. It will be on all Wikipedias from November 5 (calendar).

  • A help link will be added to Special:Search. Administrators might have to update the MediaWiki:Search-summary message to avoid two help links. [12]

Parole II

Inspired by the topic: I am so far pleased with the progress of my parole, suggesting infoboxes on the article talk. Most were taken by no objection, some after discussions. The only exception is Joseph (opera), infamous by having "ruined" my friend's RfA (but - as I was consoled - if that discussion had not existed people would have found another reason). Forget that, we have bigger problems now. I was reminded by your simple accept statement to the request that I have "mess" on my user page (2012, well before the infobox revert case) and "amnesty" on my talk. Next radical dream: I noticed with a feeling of almost horror, that a candidate for featured article was deleted, reasoning that it was created by an alleged sock who was blocked. It's restored, and the block is on AN, because appeals to arbcom ("not a sock") were not answered. I met the author in question as an excellent content contributor, and am concerned about the deletion of valuable content (only one article was restored, to my knowledge) and the block of someone who could create more. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 16:29, 2 November 2015 (UTC)

Redirect of Space exploration technologies toSpaceX and protection of redirect

Hi Courcelles, I'm overawed by what you have done for Wikipedia however I think this redirect is wrong :) I agreed there is a need to protect the redirect (as you have done) due to the persistent edit changes by an editor who wishes to overemphasis skyhook technology. Nevertheless, I'm troubled that the subject Space exploration technologies redirects to one company, albeit I very important company in this field and at the cutting edge of this field. I believe the term Space exploration technologies does warrant a stand alone article but not being an experienced editor and not having time to write (sorry about that) I feel it could be more appropriately redirected to Outline of space technology instead. Problems

  • On September 29 users' skin preferences were removed by mistake on small and medium-sized wikis. This changed preferences back to Vector. Restoring all data would cause even more problems. Affected users who want to have their preference changed back globally can ask for it as a comment on Phabricator task T119206 until December 21 2015. [14]
  • Some scheduled tasks were not working properly from September to recently. This meant some pages in the special pages namespace were not updated. It has now been fixed. [15]

Changes this week

  • Wikinews, Wikispecies, MediaWiki.org and Meta will be able to use information from Wikidata. [16][17]
  • There are no MediaWiki deployments this week (calendar).

Meetings

Future changes

  • Category watchlists are now available on test wikis and MediaWiki.org. The plan is to enable it on most wikis in January. [18]
  • Cross-wiki notifications are being developed. When this is done you will not have to go to the wiki where something happened to be notified. [19]

It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. Recent changes

  • Revision scoring will help to automatically identify bad-faith and good-faith edits. The point is to make it easier to block vandals and welcome newcomers. It currently supports Wikidata and 14 Wikipedias. [21]

Problems

  • Meta was not given access to information from Wikidata last week. This will happen later. [22]

Changes this week

  • You will be able to use wikilinks in Flow topic titles. [23]
  • IP users will have a toolbar with links to the user talk page and user contributions. Some Wikipedias already have this feature. [24]
  • You will be able to edit the graph size in the visual editor. You can either specify the size in the graph dialog or drag it to be the size you want it to be. [25]
  • It will be easier to write math in the visual editor if you don't know LaTeX. You can use symbol buttons instead. [26]
  • You will be able to use syntax highlighting when you write math with LaTeX in the visual editor. [27]
  • UploadWizard will look a bit different. [28]
  • The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 8 December. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 9 December. It will be on all Wikipedias from 10 December. (calendar).

Wednesday December 9, 7pm: WikiWednesday Salon and Skill-Share NYC

You are invited to join the Wikimedia NYC community for our evening "WikiWednesday" salon and knowledge-sharing workshop by 14th Street / Union Square in Manhattan.

This month, we will also host a Newcomer's Wiki Workshop for those getting started on the encyclopedia project!

We will also include a look at our annual plan and budget ideas, and welcome input from community members on the sorts of projects the chapter should support through both volunteer and budgetary efforts.

We welcome the participation of our friends from the Free Culture movement and from educational and cultural institutions interested in developing free knowledge projects. We will also follow up on plans for recent and upcoming editathons, and other outreach activities.

After the main meeting, pizza/chicken/vegetables and refreshments and video games in the gallery!

Some questions if you have time...

Since once again people seem to be ignoring (what I would consider) the more problematic issues with checkuser pronouncements, could you answer a few questions (within your ability - without disclosing any private data) about the recent ColonelHenry/JacktheVicar issue? I am not interested in if he is a sock or not - except to the extent of how that may be confirmed. Mike V heavily indicated the Checkuser came back as a match based on technical data, however the WMF's privacy and data rentention policies indicate that the information which the Checkuser tool uses to determine that should have been deleted/anonymised given the length of time since ColonelHenry was active. Can you confirm what the type of information was used to give a positive result? Was it a match based on private/non-public data (such as useragent strings which should have been purged), semi-public (and always retained) like IP addresses edited from (although the WMF's policy indicates ColonelHenry's IP as a registered user should not have been kept that long either) or behavioural? Someone has also mentioned there was the prospect of previous checkuser results run aginst unrecorded (in the SPI archives) IP/Socks that may have been run against in the past (overlapping with CH/JTV's editing windows - however again previous checkuser's run against CH should have been purged by now).
The reason I am looking at this is because this is the second (overt) incidence in recent times (the first being where WMUK staff members abused their checkuser access) that indicates either private/non-public data on editors is being kept far longer than the WMF's policies allow for, or that Checkusers are (and unfortunately I have no way of softening this) over-stating the results of their investigations. -edit- Just noticed the limited time banner at the top, if you dont have time to respond in detail could you point me at a third party unrelated to the current issues? I did actually explicitly ask for what information was available in the WMUK case for them to run a check against given the 3 years since the original editor's activity, however I never got a straight answer as either they didnt understand what I was getting at, or were being deliberately evasive. My father, while living in Darwin, used to holiday in Kuta. Could you please restore the Juelz Ventura wiki page? She meets the requirements for notable pornographic actresses as per pornographic actors guidelines.|}} More specifically point 2. as she has won multiple AVN awards (http://cltampa.com/dailyloaf/archives/2012/01/23/the-2012-avn-award-winners-a-review-of-the-best-in-adult-entertainment#.Vl3Szr9fA3g). As per point 3, she has also made mainstream appearances such as in the music video for "Killing You" by "Asking Alexandria" and on "The Morning After Podcast (http://themorningafterpodcast.com/)

Nomination of Courtship disorder for deletion

A discussion is taking place as to whether the article Courtship disorder is suitable for inclusion in Wikipedia according to Wikipedia's policies and guidelines or whether it should be deleted.

WikiCup 2016 is just around the corner...

Hello everyone, and we would like to wish you all a happy holiday season. As you will probably already know, the 2016 WikiCup begins in the new year; there is still time to sign up. There are some changes we'd like to announce before the competition begins.

After two years of serving as WikiCup judge, User:Miyagawa has stepped down as judge. He deserves great thanks and recognition for his dedication and hard work, and for providing necessary transition for a new group of judges in last year's Cup. Joining Christine (User:Figureskatingfan) and Jason (User:Sturmvogel 66) is Andrew (User:Godot13), a very successful WikiCup competitor and expert in Featured Pictures; he won the two previous competitions. This is a strong judging team, and we anticipate lots of enjoyment and good work coming from our 2016 competitors.

We would also like to announce one change in how this year's WikiCup will be run. In the spirit of sportsmanship, Godot13 and Cwmhiraeth have chosen to limit their participation. See here for the announcement and a complete explanation of why. They and the judges feel that it will make for a more exciting, enjoyable, and productive competition.

The discussions/polls concerning the next competition's rules will be closed soon, and rules changes will be made clear on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Scoring and talk pages. The judges are committed to not repeating the confusion that occurred last year and to ensuring that the new rules are both fair and in the best interests of the competition, which is, first and foremost, about improving Wikipedia.

Confusion over page protection

I realize BLPs are a bit special and that administrators have more than the usual leeway in setting page protections, but I am confused about why this page has pending-changes-2 protection. It was my understanding that except for some grandfathered pages and OFFICE actions, pc-2 was not to be used. If this has changed, then the relevant documentation including WP:Page protection and WP:Pending changes needs to be updated. If this is a one-off case of WP:Ignore all rules that's fine as well, but I would ask that next time, specifically cite WP:IAR in the protection log when using pending-changes-2 if that's the reason you are using it (IMHO using PC2 instead of full protection in a case like this, where there is a specific request on the talk page to clean up the article, is a good use of WP:IAR, but others may disagree). davidwr/(talk)/(contribs) 22:29, 20 December 2015 (UTC)

  • Yeah, it was a bit of an IAR call, but also the least-powerful tool available to stop the stream of autoconfirmed sockpuppets (I can find the SPI if needed), and let non-admins (specifically but not limited to Timtrent) continue to develop the article should they choose to do so. Future changes

  • URLs in the recent changes IRC feed will no longer be rewritten to unencrypted HTTP. This could be a breaking change for bots dependent on the IRC feed. [41]
  • The edit tabs for the wikitext editor and the visual editor will be combined to one single edit tab. You will be able to choose which one you prefer. If you are not logged in, your choice will be saved as a cookie in your browser. You can test the single edit tab. [42][43]
  • There is a beta feature that adds links to the subject on other Wikimedia projects. This works much like the links to for example Wikipedia articles in other languages. It will go out of beta testing and be enabled for everyone in January. Wikis that don't want this can decide to have it disabled. [44][45]
  • The difference between "alerts" and "messages" notifications is unclear to some. The developers want feedback at the Phabricator task or on MediaWiki.org so they can make this better. You can give feedback in your language if you can't write in English.

Kingdom of Hawaii attorney brought up in an odd post.

User:Aliejames left an odd post on my talk page here where they seem to declare themselves as proxy representative of Hawaiian Kingdom attorneys and request a deletion review. I have replied on my talk page and on theirs but, this may need admin attention. The editor previously created an article that was nominated for deletion (one proposed deletion and one deletion discussion) about nearly the same subject Edmund Keli’i Silva Jr.. Problems

  • Sites with a wikimedia.org address were by mistake redirected to the Wikimedia Foundation wiki on 26 January. This included Meta and Wikimedia Commons. The mistake was fixed after an hour. [47]
  • Some users had problems logging in and out around 22 January. Bots also had problems and edit previews did not work properly. This was because of problems related to the new component SessionManager. It was undone on 23 January. [48][49]
  • Because of new problems with SessionManager the latest version of MediaWiki was removed from the Wikimedia wikis again on 31 January. The new version this week will be without SessionManager. [50]

Changes this week

  • The page history will get a help link. This will go to Help:Page history on Meta. Wikis can exchange it for a link to their local pages. [51]
  • Notifications will only show part of a page name if it is very long. You will also have another way to mark notifications as read. [52][53]
  • The Universal Language Selector input methods are now available with the visual editor. This means many who write in non-Latin scripts can now use the visual editor. [54]
  • The visual editor will now give you more tools to edit tables. You can move rows and columns in a table and copy parts of tables to make new ones. You can also copy and paste more than one cell at the same time. [55][56][57]
  • The visual editor has a new warning message when you leave a page you are editing without saving. Non-English wikis might need to translate it. [58][59]
  • The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 2 February. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 3 February. It will be on all wikis from 4 February (calendar).

  • The rest.wikimedia.org domain will be shut down. This is planned to happen in March. You should use /api/rest_v1/ at each individual project domain instead. [60]

Recent changes

  • You can now follow when pages are added or removed from a category on German Wikipedia. The plan is to add it to Wikimedia Commons and other Wikipedias this week. [63][64]
  • Administrators can hide individual entries of a page with RevisionDelete. There is now a button to choose "all", "none" or "inverse" in Special:Log. The article history will get the same buttons soon. Wikis that have done this locally with JavaScript will be able to remove that code. [65]

Changes this week

  • You will be able to see the references when you preview a section you are editing. This will happen even if there is no <references /> tag in that section. [66]
  • The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 26 January. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 27 January. It will be on all wikis from 28 January (calendar).

Meetings

  • You can join the next meeting with the VisualEditor team. During the meeting, you can tell developers which bugs you think are the most important. The meeting will be on 26 January at 20:00 (UTC). See how to join.

Future changes

  • There is now an extension called ArticlePlaceholder. It can automatically generate content on Wikipedia with data from Wikidata if there is no Wikipedia article. It will have a tag to remind the reader it is not an article and ask the reader to create one. The developer is now looking for smaller Wikipedias that want to try the extension. [67]
  • The OTRS system will be upgraded. The plan is to do this on 3 February at 08:00 (UTC). It will probably take 6 to 8 hours. OTRS will be down during the upgrade. [68]
  • Users will soon be automatically congratulated when they reach some edit count milestones. [69]

Recent changes

  • You will be able to find or mark bugs and suggestions in Phabricator that are specific for your language or wiki. [70]
  • Notifications have been upgraded with more detailed and easier-to-access information. See the documentation. Cross-wiki notifications will be available soon on the two test wikis. [71]

Changes this week

  • The visual editor uses the TemplateData extension to make editing templates easier. You will now get a warning when you edit a TemplateData form and leave it without saving. [72]
  • MediaWiki will get a new authentication and authorization system called AuthManager. This is planned to happen in a month or two. Some bots will need to change how they log in. Two new and more stable authentication methods will be available now: Owner-only OAuth credentials and bot passwords. You can read more about the change. [73]
