Sports cards

A while back, I started looking at the gum cards to try to grab some photos of 1950s-1960s singers and vocal groups. The main gum companies in the US back then were Topps, Fleer and Bowman. All of them produced sports cards and both Topps and Fleer did music ones too.

When I went to copyright.gov for renewal info on the ones that had a copyright mark, I found nothing for renewals on the pre-1964 cards from any of these companies. The only thing you have to watch is if you start dealing with the Topps non-sports cards for television shows. McHale's Navy comes to mind because they did some cards with photos from the show. There's two copyright notices on the McHale cards--one for Topps, which was not renewed, and one for the TV production company, which was. You can go up to and include 1963 cards re: years. Poor old George Armstrong falls into the same category as Henri Richard right now, as far as cards for sale are concerned. The earliest Topps one is from 1964. :( But I'm wondering about the Canadian cards like Parkhurst which are available. There's no mark re: copyright on them and the photo would belong to either the Maple Leafs or Parkhurst Gum Company--both I think are corporations. Am wondering if they wouldn't meet the PD standard for Canada shown here. The card at the link is 62 years old. One of the best people at WP for all copyright questions is User talk:Stefan2. Am sure he'd know if older Parkhurst cards would be Canadian PD; it would be great news if that's so because there are a lot of Canadian hockey cards to be found.

Will keep an eye for team photos. All of the sports teams sent tons of them to the newspapers, so what we need for US-PD is to find ones we can date as being before 1978. It's just a matter of someone having the news photos and putting them up for sale. We hope (talk) 17:36, 29 January 2014 (UTC)

Let's start with this one: photo When I enlarged the back, I was able to make out that this was a Detroit Free Press news photo (which makes sense as he was playing for the Red Wings at that time). The earliest date stamp is February 3, 1950 (photo was probably related to their Stanley Cup win). Was also able to make out some of the news clipping: the photo says it's a Free Press photo by Toby (can't read last name).

I went to the UPenn books for 1977 and 1978 to check for Detroit Free Press renewals. The newspaper didn't renew any of their issues, so the photo is US PD-not renewed. :) We hope (talk) 20:23, 29 January 2014 (UTC)

The other two are copies (second generation photos) from a fan's scrapbook. We don't know who took them or whether they were ever published or seen outside of the scrapbook until they came onto eBay. Sorry, but because of that, we can't say they're PD. We hope (talk) 20:44, 29 January 2014 (UTC)

I was asked to comment here. One problem is that US and Canadian laws are different, and a card may often be copyrighted in one of the countries while being in the public domain in the other country. Neither country uses the rule of the shorter term on each other's cards.

File:Clyde McPhatter 1960.JPG and File:Roy Hamilton 1957.JPG contain a copyright notice, but the copyright notice does not contain any year. Under s:Copyright Act of 1909 section 18, a year had to be included for printed literary, musical and dramatic works. Therefore, I would assume that the text on the cards is {{PD-US-no notice}} but that the images have a valid copyright notice. However, a card like this presumably had very little economical value 28 years after it was published, so User:We hope's discoveries about {{PD-US-not renewed}} sound very plausible.

In Canada, the rules are different. In Canada, the terms are described at Copyright law of Canada#Public domain. Canada doesn't use the rule of the shorter term on US works (because of incompatibility with NAFTA I think), so the terms at Copyright law of Canada#Public domain also determine the copyright status of US cards in Canada, regardless of the copyright status in the United States. If the photograph was taken before 1949, then the copyright to the photograph expired in Canada 50 years after the photograph was taken. Photographs taken in 1949 or later enter the public domain 50 years after the death of the photographer, unless the photographer is anonymous in which case it is shortened to just 50 years from publication. The text on the back enters the public domain 50 years after the death of the person who wrote the text (shortened to 50 years from publication if this person is anonymous), regardless of when the text was written.

If you discover a statement somewhere where someone identifies as the author of the text or the photographs, and this statement was made within 50 years from publication of the cards, then all may fail. Unless someone discovers that such a statement exists, I think that it is very plausible to assume anonymous authorship for all cards unless the name of the author is inscribed on the card itself.

For Canadian photos within the United States, the rules are different to those of US cards. If:

the author was a US citizen living in the United States (hard to prove for cards with anonymous authorship),
the cards were published in the United States within 30 days after publication in Canada, or
the copyright expired in Canada before 1996,

then you can apply {{PD-US-not renewed}} and {{PD-US-no notice}} in the same way as for US cards. In other cases, URAA unfortunately has the effect that you have to treat the cards as "published with notice" and "copyright renewed" even if it wasn't, and in that case the cards normally enter the public domain in the United States 95 years after publication, regardless of whether they currently are in the publication in Canada or not.

A renewal for a Canadian card means that the Canadian copyright holder submitted a renewal to the United States Copyright Office, and the renewal only affects the copyright status within the United States. It can probably be assumed that no Canadian cards were renewed, but the URAA problem makes lots of Canadian post-1945 cards copyrighted in the United States. Wikipedia only cares about USA's PD rules, so a card which is in the public domain in the United States but copyrighted in Canada counts as "free", whereas a card which is in the public domain in Canada but copyrighted in the United States counts as "unfree". This makes it harder for Canadians to use articles which contain card images. --Stefan2 (talk) 12:14, 30 January 2014 (UTC)

Chex cards

I think you've found a winner here. :) Just did a little research and found out these cards were printed on Chex cereal boxes from 1963-1965. They don't have a mark on either side, so they should be fine as US-PD-no notice. Have seen cartoon character cutouts printed on various cereal boxes from the 1930s on and in their cases, the fronts were always marked--especially in the case of Disney characters. ;)

What I'd do is archive the message board link that talks about them being from Chex during those years (because they have no marking to show that's where they came from), and each of the eBay auction links that says this is one of the Chex cereal box cards. Would include info and links on the file description page when you upload. Wayback Machine now has an easy archive at Save Page Now, but you have to bookmark your links; this one doesn't send email notice as WebCite does/did.

While I was looking the other day, I did see some Coke "giveaway" cards. They're not marked or dated in any way. What I didn't find out is whether they were only Canadian or if they were also distributed in the US. They're from the 1960's-1970s and would be in the PD-US-no notice range if one could find out if they were ever given out in the US. I didn't take them because of that. Will go over Stefan2's info and table later, but wanted to let you know there's a good reason to like Chex. :-) We hope (talk) 14:35, 1 February 2014 (UTC)

No. The only mention of the date is done by the seller; I don't see any dates on the front or back.
Yes. :) This was issued by the Rangers. You might want to talk a bit about the holograms from Sporting News on the backs of some of these. Have a look. They're to certify the photo is a genuine original and not a copy. After the DR, I always mention this if I have a sports photo with a hologram on it. ;)

OK, with Template:PD-US-1978-89. I searched copyright.gov for St. Louis Blues by name and title. There were no results when I used name and for title, no sports-related items came up. (Mainly a lot of music.)
No. Again, there's nothing on either side of the photo to give use an idea of when it was done--only what the seller says. What he's saying may be right, but we don't have anything "concrete" we can use to prove the date's right.

I'd bookmark these but hold off on them until one of us is sure we understand the information Stefan2 provided. I don't believe York Peanut Butter is/was sold in the US, so these were probably Canada only. Would do the same with the two George Armstrong ones for the same reason.

Dubious about this one, because while it has a 1973 date, there's no information re: who took the photo.

George Armstrong

Feel free to nominate the article at DYK. Looks like it qualifies for February 2 in that regard. Not sure of your history at DYK, but I'll definitely have to do a quid pro quo review. I'd still like to create a playing style section that will summarize his play and his legacy (HHOF, number honoured, etc) as well as check out a couple books from my local library for extra personal life and to fill in some time gaps on his career before considering a GA run. Carpenter and Jim Gregory (ice hockey)) and am in the process of another review at the moment. I've only ever gone solo at DYK if I can remember correctly. As well, if you have any hook suggestions, let me know! The DYK template has author and author2 parameters for multiple noms. As far as a hook goes, for me personally, his scoring the final goal of the Original Six era stands out as an interesting piece of history. And go ahead and add the Memorial Cups to the table. Sorry for the slow reply. Have been trying to get more photos on Commons, deal with some RL things that wouldn't wait and am now having issues with Firefox since the version 27 update. Every time I try to save a photo, it crashes. :( My Win 7 is up to date with everything including A/V. No issues with it unless you want to do something with a photo. Managed to think a bit more about the George Armstrong photos and believe you're right about who issued them. With that in mind, it would make sense that either NHL or the team distributed the photos to all relevant media outlets in North America at the same time, so they should be OK as US-pre-1978, no notice. Hello, I noticed that you moved the references for her death from the intro to the body of the article. I don't object to this ~ in fact I prefer it ~ but I am wondering if you can point me to anywhere where this is indicated as preferred. While I understand that information in the introduction is not normally referenced, some editors understandably seem to take the view that with recent deaths this fact should be referenced in the intro. Axel Gabriel place of death

I have serious doubts about the reliability of the source you've provided. (Any author who thinks "Dutch" refers to the people of Denmark isn't very credible.) I have been scouring all Danish sources and they all just say "his family informed that he died peacefully in his sleep", no location mentioned. The AP article that all the English sources are based on all say "A daughter, Karin Moerch, announced the death but did not say where he died or give the cause of death." Or else some reduced version of that sentence. So I don't think it is public knowledge where he died. I'm guessing the author of the article you reference thinks Denmark = Copenhagen (and is populated by Dutch people). RenniePet (talk) 03:09, 12 February 2014 (UTC)

Hockey players photo question

OK--I have 2 more Maple Leafs--Kent Douglas and Al Stanley--to go and that's what we can get for the team at the moment. Found something interesting while working on these. The photos were also printed on bags of Purina pet food (Dog and Cat Chow) at the same time they were on the cereal boxes. The ones from the bag weren't as sturdy as the cereal box ones with their cardboard backs, but there were some very HQ scans from someone who was selling the non-cardboard backed ones. If you look at the one for Red Kelly, you can see every freckle on his face. :)

File:Frank Mahovlich - Toronto Maple Leafs - LAC E002505650.jpg Needs help. When I try accessing the info through the template link, I'm told that the server can't be accessed. Went to LAC main page looking for Frank Mahovlich and got this as a permanent link to the photo/information page. According to the non free file writeup, the file was uploaded in 2008 and was PD-Canada in January 2009. The photo information page also says there are no restrictions on its use. So we don't lose it, the file needs to be re-furred as a free file and re-licensed as PD-Canada. I've never licensed one, so would you mind? Will get the Leafs finished and then start on other Chex teams. We hope (talk) 23:58, 14 February 2014 (UTC)

OK, the Leafs are done. I think what's afoot with the files you mentioned is that the US won't recognize the URAA 50 year rule. Many of the hockey photos I saw there are from a magazine which looks to have been distributed in Canada only. Let me see what else I can get done with the rest tonight. Sprague Cleghorn

It's probably a good thing you write about politics rather than participate in it. What a time sink... Anyway, my thoughts on Cleghorn:

Lead: I like to split up the teams by league and list them in chronological order. So say that he played for the Renfrew Hockey Club and Montreal Wanderers of the National Hockey Association and the Ottawa Senators, Toronto St. Patricks, Montreal Canadiens and Boston Bruins of the National Hockey League. Mention his three Stanley Cups. Also, you note that he was known for dirty play, but really leave the reader hanging. Expand on that a little. You could complete that statement by noting how many times he was charged with assault for on-ice incidents.
As a rule, I dislike statements like "...and would play on...". It's basically putting future tense on a statement from the past. "...played on..." is more succinct.
Define abbreviations on first use - "National Hockey Association (NHA)", etc. I actually include the (NHA), (NHL), etc. in both the first use in the lead and the body.
Avoid in-universe terms like "on the backend" wherever possible. It would confuse readers not already familiar with the sport.
Repetition in the Early career section... "He would...", "He would...", "He would...". Mix it up a little.
Does ref 10 support the entire story of the league's first attempt at moving him to Hamilton?
"...Canadiens would see him score..." - I remember exactly how this was pointed out to me the first time: a season does not have eyes. It can't see anything. ;)
Piece about his coaching the Maroons requires a source.

Hello, I finally got around to looking at Jim Gregory (ice hockey) I gave it a little copy editing, but I really couldn't find more information, not a surprise I don't really have access to older print media or hockey related books. Feel free to revert any of my changes I'm not the best with prose. I think it might be beneficial to explain the line "and developing a relationship with his favourite player, Ted Kennedy." the entire sentence probably needs to be broken up so if you could explain that line more in depth as its own sentence it might work better. Help with Chuck Yeager article

I found your name on the Military History project page. Trying to clarify whether Chuck Yeager ever got promoted to Maj Gen (ret) in 2005 or at any other time. There are a number of news reports that describe him in passing as a retired Major General, but they could have gotten that info from old versions of Wikipedia. I've found where Congress authorized the president to promote him to Maj Gen (Ronald W. Reagan National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2005, 108th Congress [3]), but I don't know whether the president/military command ever actually made the promotion. Age with Month and Year Template?

Good quality set, indeed. Of note though, The Vancouver Archives' license claim is invalid. Those are all 1930s images so are PD-Canada, and will be PD-US as well given their copyright expired prior to the URAA date. Frank Sheppard

Hi Connormah. I'm wondering about Sheppard's whereabouts. I noticed that when you edited Frank Sheppard, you added his death date to the webpage, "after 1992". Hey @Marc87: I'm currently working with a team of SIHR people on tracking Frank Shepard down. I got the "after 1992" from one of his sons' obituary in August 1992 as it stated that at the time he was survived by his father, Frank. Hey, I could easily be wrong, but should users such as this have their pages deleted? I have noticed other pages similar to this for other living people, and I would have thought it to be best for the pages to be entirely deleted regardless of history because of how obvious it is that this user will never be unblocked. For the record

Just so you know, my revert at the Kenan Thompson article was related to the edit summary given by the IP editor ("redundant"). The IPs reasoning was to remove the name because it was redundant to have the name in the body the infobox as it was at the title/top of the infobox - that indicated to me there is a lack of understanding regarding infoboxes. I reverted only because having the name in the infobox twice (title and body) is SOP, hence, my edit summary comment. So, yes, it is how infoboxes work. Ultimately, your revert was correct because the line is used for birth name, not stage or common name. Bottom line: your "schooling" comment to me was unnecessary as well as unnecessarily harsh; the rest of your edit summary is accurate, more appropriate, and to the point of why the name should be left out. -- Winkelvi ● ✉ ✓ 21:48, 15 July 2014 (UTC)

Stale UAA reports?

Not quite sure a UAA report can be "stale". Vandalism reports at AIV, sure. But usernames at UAA are either against policy or acceptable. Yes, but honestly most of those names reported, as User:Bongwarrior put it, are borderline, not obvious violations. It's as if this user is searching for a certain string on Special:ListUsers just for the purpose of reporting them, which honestly clutters up the noticeboard.
