Hey while I am thinking about it and since I am making one of my runs through Category:Wikipedia requested photographs of ice hockey people removing articles that now have images and since you have been adding quite a few images could I get you to check the talk page and remove the "|needs-photo=yes" parameter from the ice hockey template when you add one? SIHR

The problem is the SIHR isn't a reliable source because its user generated content like Wikipedia. We need published references. It's a case of Wikipedia:Verifiability, not truth. -DJSasso (talk) 13:20, 8 March 2013 (UTC)

Not entirely I'd say - those databases we cite all go off the SIHR as well I'm pretty sure. The dates are all based off official records and such and have to be added by database admins if I'm not mistaken. – Connormah (talk) 14:51, 8 March 2013 (UTC)
This is true. I'm not changing it back. But it is one of those sticky situations. Especially since in this case one of the sources is the hall of fame. But the hall of fame website has had a number of mistakes in the past so it isn't all that shocking. -DJSasso (talk) 15:09, 8 March 2013 (UTC)
Are you referring to the Legends of Hockey site? If so that's entirely based off of a SIHR publication, Total Hockey, if I'm not mistaken. CMAH (Connormah's Sock) 04:30, 9 March 2013 (UTC)
Yeah that is the site I was referring to. I am not aware of where it gets its information. All I know is that it is the Hall of Fame's official site. But the people here on Wikipedia have found a very large number of mistakes in it in the past and have written in to have them fixed. Not sure if any of them ever have been, if they have its not been as quick a fix as the hockeydb site which responds remarkably fast to corrections. Following you!

I get my "enjoyment" from correcting pages that appear on the Pages with missing references list. Several times over the last day or two I have found myself cleaning up after you - you add references to various Canadian figures, but you don't seem to check whether it was good. What happens is, because yours is usually the first, there is no {{Reflist}} on the page. The red error message tells you this. All you need to do is add, at the bottom of the page before any external links (a) section header - ==References==; (b) choice of {{Reflist}} or <references /> (I think it's immaterial which.) There are buttons in the wiki markup panel at the bottom of the edit pane.

Follow up to a block you made

A little while ago a user (Felipito1.966) was making a number of unhelpful edits eg blindly changing american spelling to english spelling and removing the unit conversion template and hardcoding everything in metric. Somehow this behavior made it on your radar and you blocked the user. The block period is over and the user is back. I am not sure what the policy is for gauging if the editor learned the lesson but judging from his first four edits it seems the editor did not learn a thing. All of his edits were reverted by people other than me very quickly. Can you help out?

Changed spelling from american to british spelling and a cosmetic edit or two.

Formatting of references

Hi, Conormah. Recently you've edited a bunch of biographical articles about judges, to add sourced information on date-of-birth. That's great! But in many cases, you've managed to format the references in a way that may not be the most clear.

For instance, in your recent change to Kermit Lipez, you formatted the reference like this: <Ref>[http://books.google.ca/books?id=UrxFAQAAIAAJ&q=%22Lipez,+kermit%22+1941&dq=%22Lipez,+kermit%22+1941&hl=en&sa=X&ei=us-vUfuQO4jIiwLWs4CwCA&ved=0CDwQ6AEwAg]</reF>. Unfortunately that means in the references list, it appears merely as [1]. That's really not helpful because it means the reader can't tell what the reference is without hovering over the link and even then it may not be super-clear.

It would be best, I think, if you could format such references using Template:cite web. I realize sometimes that's a lot of work, though, since you have to put in author=, title=, url=, accessdate=, etc., etc., in order to be really useful.

But if that's too high a burden, a better approach is to just omit the brackets around the URL. That is, just say <ref>http://foo.bar/baz</ref> instead of <ref>[http://foo.bar/baz]</ref>. If you do that, then it shows up as the literal URL itself, i.e. http://foo.bar/baz and not [1]. When the URLs aren't great, like in the Lipez instance, this isn't as good as {cite web}, but it's still better than nothing.

Thanks for the advice. However, since I usually do these in mass numbers, I don't really have the time (and admittedly patience) to use the Cite web template. Sometime I will use WP:REFLINKS to format them automatically but I guess I could go without the brackets if it helps. The only reason I use the square brackets is that often times the URL is quite long and sometimes has a tendency to stretch the pages. – Connormah (talk) 03:29, 7 June 2013 (UTC)
Indeed, I understand your point about doing en mass, but that almost makes it worse. Usually when there are just one or two, I can go back and correct them myself by hand. But going through and finding all the metadata that you had in front of you added those is going to be a much bigger task for anyone else to do. I still think it's a big task for you, but but even bigger for anyone else. Maybe the thing to do would be to use {{cite web|title=Title here|url=url here}} and not fill out any other fields? That should be manageable for you, and make use of the special info you have in front of you (title of the work), and not require you to spend hours filling out little template options, but still make the result substantially more readable and useful to others? I agree, when the URL is crazy-long that is a problem too. I also worry a bit that some of those Google Books URLs might not be long-term stable, but I don't really know. (I'm trying to propose a good compromise that makes the page more readable without giving you a huge amount more work; I'm not sure if I'm finding the right one though). template question

Hi, Connormah -- I had occasion to modify the Presidents of Yale University template when Peter Salovey recently assumed the position. From the template history I gather you are mostly responsible for constructing it. I wondered why the footnote reads "* indicates acting president, pro tempore or chancellor"? It seems to me that the first two alternatives cover it. Andrew and Daggett were both pro tempore, Gray was acting president. I don't know of any Yale president that was called "chancellor". And since "pro tempore" and "acting" are pretty much the same thing in different languages, I was thinking "* indicates service in an acting or pro tempore capacity" might be a better phrasing.
