ArbCom 2021 Elections voter message

Hello! Voting in the 2021 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 (UTC) on Monday, 6 December 2021. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2021 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. If you no longer wish to receive these messages, you may add {{NoACEMM}} to your user talk page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 00:00, 23 November 2021 (UTC)

My Editing got deleted and received message from your side

My editing git deleted for Shaktimaan page, I am true fan of Shaktimaan and written what is truth. Although I have not given any reference but in future I won't miss to add reference. Please let my added part for Shaktimaan page be there. SJSudhir (talk) 04:25, 9 October 2021 (UTC)

Hi! Wikipedia is not a fan website and needs reliable and verifiable sources – the links I gave on your talk page will show you what you need to do to ensure your contributions are not removed. ClaudineChionh (talk) 23:22, 10 October 2021 (UTC)

Congratulations!

I just noticed that you have been editing Wikipedia for 20 years! That is amazing. I also see that you are more active recently. Thank you very much. Cullen328 Let's discuss it 04:46, 31 October 2021 (UTC)

Thank you! I haven't always had enough free time for Wikipedia but it's great to see how far it's come in twenty years. ClaudineChionh (talkcontribs) 04:49, 31 October 2021 (UTC)

Women in Red

Hi there, Claudine, and welcome to Women in Red. It's good to have a new member with access to library resources and an interest in adding biographies of women from Australia and Asia. Although you have created a number of interesting articles, you have not yet started any biographies of women. You might therefore find it useful to look through our Primer for creating women's biographies. You will find many interesting red link lists in our Redlist index. Please let me know if you run into any difficulties or need assistance. Happy editing!--Ipigott (talk) 11:57, 1 November 2021 (UTC)

And congratulations on first editing Wikipedia over 20 years ago. By coincidence, I see that tomorrow I will have been editing for 15 years. Seems like yesterday I was working on my first articles. Time flies!--Ipigott (talk) 12:08, 1 November 2021 (UTC)

Thank you! I did create an article for Jean Littlejohn for Ada Lovelace Day and that reminded me how satisfying it was to start new articles. I have been perusing the redlists but I'll have to be careful not to get wiki burnout as I have in the past. ClaudineChionh (talkcontribs) 12:17, 1 November 2021 (UTC)

MOS:DATETIES to France

Hi!
You’ve recently altered the date format in “Global security law proposal”. Is there really a strong preference for either date format in France? AFAIK France ain’t particularly anglophone. I’m just curious where/how you drew your conclusions from, for future reference, you know, because I gotta admit I changed the date format, too, when I revamped the article in April. Thanks for your response!
‑‑ K (🗪 | ) 17:34, 5 November 2021 (UTC)

Thanks for following up! To be clear, the date-month-year format isn't specifically "Anglophone". Rather, the month-date-year format is an outlier peculiar to the United States. You can see the dmy format being used on, for example, Wikipédia en français <<Actualités>>, the French government, Le Monde, and Le Figaro, just to name a few. Hey thanks for following up on this! There is (usually) no rush to add content to Wikipedia and I would recommend spending more time learning about how Wikipedia works and collecting good sources before diving right in and adding unsourced material. I'm not the only editor who will remove unsourced statements so if you want something to stay published it's better to get your sources ready first – or wait for someone else to add it! NPR and the NY Times are reliable sources so have a look at Referencing for beginners (and maybe the Introduction to contributing) and see if you can add those sources yourself. Thank you!

Thank you for replaying my question about references and WP:NACTOR :D And i want something from you :D Can you tell me whether Draft:Penny O'Brien has a good WP:NACTOR ? It's still not finished like it's now 15% finished? But can you check it for me :D thank you again! Mac O'Donnell (talk) 12:20, 11 November 2021 (UTC)

@Mac O'Donnell: Thanks for persevering and for checking in! First things first, I am an ordinary editor, not a new article reviewer, and I can help Wikipedians find information but I have no expertise in working on articles about actors, film/TV, or games. O'Brien has clearly worked on notable projects, but whether she warrants her own Wikipedia article depends partly on how big her roles were on those, and I can't answer that, having not played RDR2 or finished watching For All Mankind. I also don't know whether the sources you use are reliable as I don't follow entertainment or gaming media closely enough. I think it would be a good idea to visit the relevant WikiProjects to read their guidelines and maybe post your questions on their talk pages: WikiProject Actors and Filmmakers, WikiProject Film, and maybe WikiProject Spaceflight.
On another note, you say on your user page that you forgot your password on your "other account". If you had trouble logging in to Wikipedia, you really ought to try resetting your password before creating a new account. If you really can't recover your other account, it might be helpful to make a note on your current user page about any other accounts you have previously used. ClaudineChionh (talkcontribs) 03:03, 12 November 2021 (UTC)

Thank you so much! That was helpful! Have a nice day! Mac O'Donnell (talk) 15:13, 12 November 2021 (UTC)

Marriage Postal Survey

Hello ClaudineChionh, thanks you for your review of what was my first attempt to edit Wikipedia.

I've used Wikipedia many times as a reference as I believe factual accounts are vital as reference material. Occasionally I have thought an edit might be useful to the overall accuracy of a particular content but I suppose, being busy at my job, I always put it off.

Today I had a discussion at my village where certain facts were exchanged about the Postal Marriage Survey and the topic of follow up was the participation rate of voters across the various age groups. I was asked to check to provide the answer for our follow up meeting. So where did I go - to Wikipedia. But to no avail, that information wasn't to be found.

But in my search I found what I merely saw as a mis-categorised entry under 'vandalism' when clearly it was an everyday means of aerial advertising seen regularly used by everyone from marriage proposals to 'drink Pepsie'.

To address the specific matter of the stats I searched the Australian Bureau of Statistics website, extracted the date, extrapolated the figures and simply posted the ABS words to Wikipedia. At the same time I merely replaced the words from 'vandalism' category to 'Advertising'.

I characterized both these entries as minor edits, one that I believes requires no review and could never be the subject of a dispute.

Being a first time user of Wikipedia editing I'm confused as to why my changes which are to accuracy have been found to be unacceptable. Even further, am I right that your refusal classifies my edits as 'vandalism'?

I would greatly ask if you could assist me in clarifying the matter please? Regards

Hello Brian, and thank you for contributing to Wikipedia. It's true that I do spend a fair amount of time watching articles that may attract controversial changes or outright vandalism. I assure you that I do not think your edits constitute vandalism, but merely brushing up against some of Wikipedia's many rules and standards that can be opaque to new editors.
There were a couple of issues with your first edit. First, it included text that was directly copied from the ABS report of the survey. While you correctly added a reference to the ABS website, you should not copy or closely paraphrase text from another source – not even a few sentences – unless you clearly indicate that it is a quotation.
Furthermore, your inference of the survey results from the participation rate is not supported by the ABS report you cite, and could be seen as manipulating the figures to imply the opposite result from the survey result. If you have another source that does support these figures, you must cite it. As a tertiary source, Wikipedia summarises primary research but does not publish original research, so reinterpreting the official results of the survey is beyond our remit.
No one has reverted your second edit, but whether the "NO" skywriting campaign should be categorised as "advertising" or "vandalism" is a subjective matter, not incontrovertible fact. Changes along these lines should be brought up on the article's talk page, where you may test whether other editors agree or disagree with your change.
Wikipedia is a community of practice that has developed its own rules and jargon over twenty years. In Wikipedia language a "minor" edit is a correction of obvious spelling, grammar, typographical, or layout error that does not change the meaning of the article or section and could not possibly be disputed by its readers and editors. While the two interpretations you introduced may seem minor to you, they are interpretations, and therefore do not count as "minor" changes as Wikipedia defines these.
I hope this doesn't discourage you from continuing to contribute to Wikipedia – you are welcome here, and while Wikipedia has a lot of policies and guidelines, the community is here to support anyone who wants to help build an encyclopedia. Article talk pages are the best places to discuss the content of specific articles, but please do visit the Teahouse if you have any general questions about editing Wikipedia. December 2021 GOCE Newsletter

Guild of Copy Editors December 2021 Newsletter

Hello and welcome to the December GOCE newsletter, a brief update of Guild activities since September 2021.

                 Current and upcoming events

Election time: Our end-of-year election of coordinators opened for nominations on 1 December and will close on 15 December at 23:59 (UTC). Voting opens at 00:01 the following day and will continue until 31 December at 23:59, just before "Auld Lang Syne". Coordinators normally serve a six-month term and are elected on an approval basis. Self-nominations are welcome. If you've thought of helping out at the Guild, or know of another editor who would make a good coordinator, please consider standing for election or nominating them here.

December Blitz: We have scheduled a week-long copy-editing blitz for 12 to 18 December. Sign up now!

Drive and Blitz reports

September Drive: Almost 400,000 words of articles were copy edited for this event. Of the 27 people who signed up, 21 copyedited at least one article. Final results and awards are listed here.

October Blitz: From 17 to 23 October, we copy edited articles tagged in May and June 2021 and requests. 8 participating editors completed 26 copy edits on the blitz. Final results, including barnstars awarded, are available here.

November Drive: Over 350,000 words of articles were copy edited for this event. Of the 21 people who signed up, 14 copyedited at least one article. Final results and awards are listed here.

Other news

It is with great sadness that we report the death on 19 November of Twofingered Typist, who was active with the Guild almost daily for the past several years. His contributions long exceeded the thresholds for the Guild's highest awards, and he had a hand in innumerable good and featured article promotions as a willing collaborator. Twofingered Typist also served as a Guild coordinator from July 2019 to June 2021. He is sorely missed by the Wikipedia community.

Progress report: As of 30 November, GOCE copyeditors have completed 619 requests in 2021 and there were 51 requests awaiting completion on the Requests page. The backlog stood at 946 articles tagged for copy-editing (see monthly progress graph above).

Thank you all again for your participation; we wouldn't be able to achieve what we have without you! Cheers from your GOCE coordinators Jonesey95, Dhtwiki, Tenryuu, and Miniapolis.

Rejecting edits

I'm looking at World Health Organization, and I see that you reverted an edit, using Wikipedia:RedWarn, and that you left Template:Uw-disruptive1 as a warning on the editor's talk page.

The edit added this text: as with "recognizing the vital importance of health as a factor in the promotion of conditions of stability and well-being" as its convenance goal.

The edit also added a citation (WHO, Member States) to the next sentence, which was previously uncited and which is the kind of sentence that we normally want to be supported by an inline citation.

What is it about this edit made you think that adding relevant, on-topic information and a citation to a reliable source is "unconstructive" or "disruptive"? WhatamIdoing (talk) 19:53, 13 December 2021 (UTC)

Hi @WhatamIdoing: In reverting those edits by Medupdate and ManateePanda, I was primarily concerned with undoing the clumsy phrasing that those edits introduced (such as in the phrase you quoted) – it was primarily a matter of written style, not citations. You will see in the diff you referenced that one of Medupdate's edits had introduced extra line breaks, which may give the appearance of adding or changing the <ref> that followed, but the ref was not in fact added, removed, or changed. ClaudineChionh (talkcontribs) 23:05, 13 December 2021 (UTC)
A single line break is something that MediaWiki software handles automagically, without readers even knowing that it's there. Only people looking at the wikitext source code would even know that it was there, and if a whitespace problem with no visible effect on the page really bothers you, then you know where the edit button is, and you can fix that without reverting the rest, just like we all did back in the day.
Clumsy phrasing is not normally something that earns people a warning about being "disruptive" and "unconstructive".
I also invite you to look at that diff a little more closely. In Medupdate's version, there was a citation at the end of the sentence saying "Headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland, it has 194 member states and it has six main regional offices and 150 offices worldwide". In the version you reverted to, there was no citation. What happened to the citation that said <ref>[https://www.who.int/countries WHO, Member States]</ref> when you reverted this supposedly "disruptive" and "unconstructive" addition of a source? WhatamIdoing (talk) 07:21, 14 December 2021 (UTC)
