Dude...[edit]

Chacor, sorry, but you gotta calm down a bit. This is a community after all, and several people are getting a bit annoyed. While it's alright being bold sometimes, no one person has more authority over anyone else. It almost seems like you're taking things a bit too seriously, with all the rule mentions. True, we have several policies, but your constant reminders of civility are getting a lot of people annoyed. Take a chill pill ;) Hurricanehink (talk) 20:49, 4 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Typhoon Xangsane[edit]

FYI you forgot to undelete the prior versions of the article and corresponding talk page after the move. – Chacor 14:05, 9 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The main article had a minor history, one that's not worth keeping (it was simply a redirect). The talk page could possibly be called minor (it's debatable) but I've restored it anyway. —Mets501 (talk) 14:10, 9 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
It wasn't simply a redirect (one single edit); rather there was a prior version that was merged into the main article for the season. Not sure, but I'll defer to you, but personally I would restore it. – Chacor 14:11, 9 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, I see what you're saying. It was only a one line thing, but I've restored it. History merging is not really preferred as it can create problems, is impossible to undo without a developer, and produces incorrect diffs, however. —Mets501 (talk) 14:17, 9 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Alberto image[edit]

Umm, the image you removed from 2000AHS: [[Image:Alberto 2000.jpg]] is from NASA and was taken by a NOAA satellite, that's as public domain as it gets. There is nothing resembling a copyvio here. -- §HurricaneERIC§ archive 00:34, 11 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

This is a research and educational use of it. It's not a commercial use. We're not selling it to anybody. Plus, who's going to take us to court for it anyway? The Government and NASA have better things to do than sue Wikipedia for using a playing-card-sized image on a page deep in the bowels of the Wikipedia database. A whole bunch of Commons guys I've run into pitch a fit over fair use images even, which is allowed under United States law. I could go to whoever owns the rights, get a signed statement saying we can use it and they would still go nuts and start having panic attacks. They sweat over the hazy fine print, I prefer to use what's between my ears. -- §HurricaneERIC§ archive 04:44, 15 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Face a block for what? Using common sense? We're not selling this image to anybody. There are some people who may try to steal images off here. They get sued because they're the jerks. We're providing a page for research. Now I know that we should try to avoid providing a medium for idiots to be idiots but I always have considered this a little drastic. As for free images, very few images come without fine print. Also, threats are just words until they are enacted. Now, I'm not going to pitch a hissy fit over some stupid picture, I'm just saying that fretting over its usage is silly. -- §HurricaneERIC§ archive 05:07, 15 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Hey, I don't break the rules. I will bitch about them occationally ;) but I won't break them. This is me not agreeing with it. And please don't say deal with it. This is how I deal with it. I'm actually in a good mood and I'd like to stay that way. It's just a picture. Why should I get in a twist over it? It's not like we're losing a crown jewel. -- §HurricaneERIC§ archive 05:21, 15 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
However I dont know why SeaWiFS images are copyrighted since they are the product of NASA which is a US federal government agency (the website ends in .gov) and thus PD and Eric stated above that the image was taken by a NOAA satallite. Is NASA contradicting themselves? or is it just us. Storm05 16:57, 16 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Tropical Cyclone Mala[edit]

I had checked that archive but RSMC advisories for Tropical Cyclone Mala are incomplele and nowhere could I find the maximum wind speeds as well as minimum pressure for this Cyclone. Your posting of the minimum pressure for Mala 954 [hPa] is from RSMC as per your edit. Isn't there any other source we could get data for RSMC New Delhi?--Ugaap 16:37, 11 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hurricane categories[edit]

Sorry. Still thinking about this. A "consensous" built on the foundation of a lack of response, is really no consensous at all. And a "consensous" to violate standards and (what appears to me to be) common sense (Tropical Storms placed in Hurricane categories) just strikes me as wrong. So I'm still thinking about all this. - TexasAndroid 11:26, 12 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

If you want to, I will not edit war over it. You may consider the issue closed, but I do not. But I have no idea how to properly proceed from here. I'm sorry, but your "consensous" just is not one. But in the face of screaming apathy to the issue, I don't know where to go next for a real consensous. And I still have the problem with the fact that, IMHO, standards for categories say that it should not be done this way in the first place. Yeah, it says there are exceptions, but nothing I have seen qualifies this situation for the exceptions. And, as I have argued a couple of times, the idea of haveing storms that failed to reach Hurricane status in "Hurricane" categories just flat out strikes me as violating common sense. Shrug. But I'm not sure how to proceed from here. Anyway, I have to leave for work. Do as you wish at this point. - TexasAndroid 11:35, 12 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
No consensous, no. But standards that say they should not be there, yes. - TexasAndroid 12:52, 12 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, revert on sight. Nothing today requiring oversight, I think. In the past there have been claims of posting personal information with external links with similar claims and taunts. In the past admins that reverted and deleted posts had strong allegations leveled against them about covering up for finacial fraud and other Weirdness. Attempts to identify admins IP address through fake Wikipedia links sent by email. Other types of off site harassment of admins in the usual places. So beware of emails and on and off site stuff if you want privacy. Thanks for your help. :-) Take care, --FloNight 12:05, 18 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

"Associated" in Hurricane Gustav (2002)[edit]

That's what I assumed at first as well, but tell me if you see another verb in that "sentence", because I certainly don't. The only way to make that group of words comprehensible is to use "associated" as a verb. --Spangineerws (háblame) 15:17, 26 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

OK, maybe I'm missing something, but if "associated" is an adjective, there is no verb. And a sentence must have a verb; otherwise it's not a sentence (from sentence: "a sentence is a unit of language, characterized in most languages by the presence of a finite verb"). We could add "formed", "existed", "appeared", "developed"; anything. "An area of disturbed weather associated with a weak surface trough and a stronger upper-level trough formed/developed/appeared between the Bahamas and Bermuda on 6 September." Now, are you absolutely sure that "associated" wasn't meant as a verb? That is, did you write this? I hope I don't sound patronizing; I just don't see what the disconnect is. --Spangineerws (háblame) 15:29, 26 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Your comment[edit]

Mets shows no interest in following policy. It's one thing for him to ignore me when I tell him that his actions aren't allowed, but this was discussed at AN/I. He participated in the discussion. And yet he continues to ignore policy, ignore a discussion on AN/I, and has now taken to attacking me. I don't care whether he chooses to attack me or not - this isn't about me. It's about an admin who refuses to accept either policy and pretends that the consensus on AN/I somehow doesn't apply to him. Guettarda 01:13, 28 October 2006 (UTC) [reply]

Hildanknight and the "arch-nemesis" comment[edit]

Hey Chacor,

I read your comment on about Hildanknight's "arch nemesis" comment on his Talk Page and also on the Esperanza proposals page.

You are well within your rights to take offense but I'd like to ask for some compassion and understanding. Hildanknight is a 15-year old high school student (male). He has done some good work here at Wikipedia including a new program (Requests for Feedback). Howeveer, he has also made some mistakes including some inexcusable vandalism that caused him to get blocked. I do think he needs to be "cuffed about" a bit to teach him some Netiquette but go please go easy on him. His heart is in the right place even if he does get a bit carried away at times.

In particular, his "arch nemesis" comment seems to have been motivated by a sense that you were stalking him and biting him. Please give him a chance to air his grievances and try not to bite back too hard even if those grievances may seem more imagined than real to you. We were all 15 years old once and some 15 year olds see life with more drama than others.

Chacor, when I created the "memorial" along with the other section headings, I was following the precendent of the Cedar Fire article, which has a similar section. Your recent change to WP:RFA[edit]

I reverted your change in procedure to WP:RFA and brought it up for discussion at Wikipedia_talk:Requests_for_adminship#Change_in_RfA_procedure_without_comment. We should at least discuss this on WT:RFA before making the change. Personally, I don't think we should be making the requirements to have a success RfA even more restrictive than they already are. --Durin 13:54, 30 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

  • Nominators can and do list other people's nominations. It's not all that unusual. Reason; some nominees are not denizens of RfA and do not know how to list the RfA properly. They'd rather have someone who knows what they are doing at RfA do it for them. --Durin 14:06, 30 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
  • Re: revert; Given that I left a note on your talk page, and also started a discussion on the point at WT:RFA, I think this is a non-issue in this case. Your GA comments[edit]

Hi Chacor. Thanks for your comments. Unfortunately, several of us have tried discouraging Nathan from spurious nominations with little success. I removed Miami from GA nomination once before. He appears to be a young teenager who reacts to criticism with escalation. Hopefully having had two requests for arbitration rejected (one was against me over the above edit and related things) and being asked not to act as an advocate will help him to understand that he needs to focus on editing to improve articles first. If you have any helpful advice for him, he appears to be receptive to some people. Nathan is the only editor who thinks the Miami, Queensland article is important enough to receive significant work at this stage - I focus on South Australian articles and User:WikiCats is interested in getting the main Gold Coast, Queensland article up to a better standard (Miami is only a small part of that area). I see this stuff all the time; "Oh, the big nasty administrator is not being nice!" etc., etc., just because they didn't get their way. Yeah, it might be mean, but that's how I see it. Whatever. He was a fairly nice guy, to me at least, but if he plans on trolling like this I think we might be better without him...at least until he cools down.
