So the 2017 WikiCup has come to an end. WP:BIRD standard article sections

Hello Cas, in your recent edit to the variegated fairywren, you noted that the sequence of the 'Behaviour and ecology' sub-paragraph headers is usually 'Food and feeding' first, followed by 'Breeding' second. If this is so, then perhaps it should be reflected on the project page where it currently lists the order as the other way around ('Breeding' followed by 'Food and feeding'). I'm not really fussed either way, as chronologically this really is a "chicken and the egg" type problem, but for the sake of consistency it would be good to settle on a standard template to use for all bird articles. The article layout section was originally added on 19 Apr 2008 with the Feeding section listed before the Breeding section. It was changed to the present order on 02 Aug 2009 and has remained unchanged for over eight years now. Therefore, while some older articles may still retain the original layout, I would expect the vast majority of articles to now conform to the new layout. Is there any way you can ascertain if the older format is used more often? I would not open a vote on the project page if we could not show that this is indeed the usual or more common practice. I am surprised that it was switched without discussion, and I can't see any for the relevant time. I don't remember it changing and have been using "feeding" before "breeding" on many pages. Loopy30, I think I've always put breeding first. Since I've written a decent proportion of the bird FAs, and collabed on a few more, I'd guess that most follow breed-feed. Jimfbleak - talk to me? 19:45, 18 November 2017 (UTC)

I also do breeding and then feeding (most of the time, that is). The reason is because of the fact that one talks about how the young are fed and what they are fed. Alternate names in bird articles

Hello Cas, I have another article format query here as a result of this edit here where you removed the bold for an alternate name because it wasn't located in the lead paragraph. MOS is very large and by no means have I read it all, but I do not see where it bans all use of bold outside of the lead section.

Reading MOS:BOLD, it states that as an article title term, any term that redirects to the article (such as an alternate name) can be bolded at the first occurrence in running text whether or not this term also appears in the lead.

When there is only one alternate term, it looks good to put this information in the first sentence of the lead paragraph. When there are two or more alternate names, this can unduly clutter the lead and are best placed in the Taxonomy paragraph. In each of those cases, the alternate name should be bolded at its first use. 'Cheers, Loopy30 (talk) 23:40, 22 November 2017 (UTC)

The second sentence is a formatting issue - if I (for instance) write User talk:Casliber it will be bolded. I agree with only having the one or two commonest names in the lead. I have gone by the first sentence (i.e. bold in lead only) - also hinted at in sentence 3 (i.e. discouraged if large number of terms) Cas Liber (talk · contribs) 02:53, 23 November 2017 (UTC)

I have read through MOS:BOLD again and the first sentence does not actually say "bold in lead only" but only that this is the "most common use". As for the second sentence and formatting issues, it took me a while to understand your example, so forgive me if I have missed your point. In your example, the words "User talk:Casliber" were bolded automatically as a result of you placing wikilinks around a term that is also the title of the present page. In contrast, the superb fairywren example is not an automatic formatting issue as the bold was manually added to a term synonymous with, but not identical to, the article title. Under MOS:BOLD, this use is permitted for "the first occurrence in running text, of a term that redirects to the article or one of its sub-sections, whether the term appears in the lead or not". As for the third sentence, "dozens of vernacular names" should indeed be discouraged and would perhaps be better in a list or table. In the superb fairywren example we are talking about six alternate names, in other articles it is often only two or three names. Loopy30 (talk) 15:21, 23 November 2017 (UTC)

Frankly, some of it is concreate, more of it modern and rather ugly walls to cheap government flats, so writers tend to downplay. Talk:The Cabin in the Woods/GA1

Cas Liber, it's entirely up to you as reviewer, but the nominator here, who is clearly in no hurry to work on this despite nominating it, has a great many current GANs—17 at the moment—the bulk of them ones with few nominator edits like this one. The GA instructions were certainly not followed in this case, where a minimal contributor is expected to reach out to regular contributors and get their thoughts about doing a nomination prior to actually opening a GAN. Several such nominations have previously been removed; the only reason this one wasn't is because you'd already started your review. They are also not great in actually responding to GA reviews when issues are raised, for example Talk:Book of Genesis/GA1. Best of luck, whatever you decide to do here. Generally, I am happy to leave things open longer rather than shorter, but was intending on closing this as a fail due to inaction and hence not fulfilling broad coverage criteria. Thanks for letting me know; I just saw that you took on a new one. I've just removed 3 of the 17 as clear violations of the GANI requirements, one of which I'd actually opened the discussion about whether the article was ready on the talk page, but didn't get back to it until today. (It turns out there were 16 GANs in a two-day period, many of which were done without consultation, and several of which were reverted out of hand by others.) Cas, I see what you mean in reptile pages. I've cleaned up/added many gecko species stub pages in the families Carphodactylidae and Diplodactylidae which are primarily Australasian. I've also moved any commons images to the respective pages as well. Uninvolved admin

Hi Cas, hope you've had a good Christmas. Just to spoil it, could you take a look at User talk:CSHN_Murthy. There is lots more in blanked versions of the history and elsewhere, but basically he's been advised on competence and behaviour issues by numerous editors over a couple of months, including at least three admins. You will see I've blocked him for this edit, threatening legal action and with gross incivility, as the culmination of consistently poor behaviour. His response has been to repeat the threats on his talk page and add further vilification (of me this time, which doesn't bother me, but shows his mindset). I think there is a case for withdrawing user page editing rights, but since I'm one of the malicious incompetents ganging up against him, it's clearly not appropriate for me to do so, so I wonder if you could have a look and decide whether or not to apply that sanction. I was pondering that myself recently. Given I do this to relax, I have to be enthusiastic about something. There has been a flurry of activity among birding editors over the last year which has been nice to be a part of. Hi Casliber, I hope I find you well. I left you to finish the Red-billed quelea FA, as I went on holidays end of August to South-Africa. You asked me to take pictures of Proteaceae. Of cause, I have long been back but have been busy to ID as much of the photos I took. This is to let you know I'v added Proteaceae pictures to Wiki Commons of Diastella fraterna!, Leucadendron coniferum!, Ld. gandogeri!, Ld. salignum, Ld. rubrum! nf, Ld. xanthoconus, Leucospermum calligerum, Ls. conocarpodendron subsp. viridum, Ls. cordifolium, Ls. cuneiforme, Ls. oleifolium, Ls. prostratum!, Ls. truncatum!, Mimetes cucullatus, Paranomus abrotanifolius!, Phytoplasma on Protea cynaroides!, Protea caffra subsp. caffra, P. cynaroides, P. denticulata!, P. glabra, P. laurifolia, P. neriifolia, P. piscina! nf, P. roupelliae, Serruria adscendens!, S. balanocephala! or S. gremialis!, S. elongata!, S. fasciflora!. Species not on commons before have !, nf = not flowering. In some other species I provided the first pictures not from botanical gardens. For an overview see here.

I could ID many species that are not in the field-guidebook with the help of iSpot and iNaturalist. Friends of mine have traveled West-Australia for half a year recently. I promised to assist them in identifying the taxa, but they did not record the locations. Do you have a suggestion where I could find help for this task?

I'll be occupied with uploading other SA pictures for some time. I hope in due time you are willing to lend me a hand in setting up two WikiProjects (Botany of the Cape, and Pelargonium). I've got some stuff in my Sandbox, but need help before I can post it. Some people in the Netherlands and South Africa are willing to contribute.

About Xylocopa rufitarsis - "red-leg carpenter bee"?

Hi Cas. I have only been able to find one mention on the inter-tubes for the common name of X.rufitarsis as "red-leg carpenter bee", that bee-ing - see what I did there, Sione? - the article itself. Obviously its specific epithet "rufitarsis" means "red legs", but... well, more generally I think we should be writing Wikipedia articles for readers who don't initially know what "binomial authority" and "specific epithet" mean. Cas Liber, it looks like you promoted Prep 4 to Queue 4 when it was incomplete: there is only a "that" for the final (quirky) hook.

Ok, the background is that several snake articles were worked on by a now-banned user who would stretch/embellish sources to make the snake look more dramatic. It was also a test for me to see if reworking an already well-developed article is easier or more difficult than building one from scratch (and also you are right about the lack of Featured Content on snakes). Hence I really need to go over all sources in the article to make sure that it anything wrong or exaggerated is removed or realigned to the source. I have found material that was not in citations that were supposedly supporting them. I had gone through the taxonomy section so far and have the rest to do. I figure the behaviour and toxicity sections will need the most focus. Anyway, if you feel like checking a section or two to see if sources match content that'd be great, if not it's no big deal. Hi CasLiber, I'm working on Felicia (genus) at the moment, see User:Dwergenpaartje/sandbox. This made clear that two redirects are wrong: Felicia erigeroides to Erigeron karvinskianus and Felicia uliginosa to Solidago uliginosa, such as becomes clear by comparing the distributions of the Felicia species and the species they redirect to. However, the synonymy in both is sourced, here and here on The PlantList. Seems like an open invitation to reverse the factual correction. What could effectively be done to avoid this? Paranomus abrotanifolius

Hi CasLiber, Thanks for the DYK nomination of Paranomus abrotanifolius. I will have to do my best to quickly paraphrase the description still between non-wiki tags, but it has various difficulties, such as morphologic terms that seem to have a specific use in Proteaceae or possibly only in Paranomus. One of the other issues is the unit of length used: lin.. I first interpreted it as an inch, but that leads to dimensions of the flower that could not be correct. I now think it stands for line (unit), the wiki article of which says botanist continued to use the unit even though it was not authorized in the British Imperial system of 1824. It further says it is variously reckoned as ​1⁄10, ​1⁄12, ​1⁄16, or ​1⁄40 of an inch, and that the British line is approx. 2.1 mm and the Paris line approx. 2.3 mm. This introduces a lot of uncertainty, but I think it would be reasonable to assume lin. is indeed short?hand for line and that it is ment to be 1⁄10 of an inch. What do you think? Possible new editor problem

Hello, Cas,

On my watchlist, I found an article move made in error. It appears a new editor has been helpfully creating redirects and moves, but hasn't checked the articles being linked or moved. You may want to follow up on User talk:Ha-joon S, as I fear the article on my watchlist is not the only one s/he misconnected. Whoever they are, they apparently link articles without even reading to confirm the connection.

My mistakenly redirected article needing correction/reversion is Arthur Peck (aviator). This WWI pilot is presently wrongly linked to an executive of the Gap Corporation.

Oedera capensis

The new article on Oedera capensis may have a nice fact for a DYK nomination: "what at first sight appears to be a single flowerhead [...] in fact are mostly nine densely cropped heads".
