  • Yes, I had been editing for a while (largely things like hoax-hunting, fixing bad ISBNs, finding sources for articles) before starting a regular Wikipedia account a couple of weeks ago. If there's a way to integrate the prior edit history into the new account, I'm not aware of it. Looking forward to continued work on Wikipedia. Jacobus Van de Water[edit]

I stumbled upon this article while de-orphaning. I see that you inserted a reference that mentions that he was mayor of New York City in 1673. However, I can't find any other sources to confirm that. I agree that he could be a mayor in New York City, but I can't find anything that mentions him as mayor of New York City.   • Usually, I search under the orphaned articles category (articles that have no inbound links from other Wikipedia articles) and start randomly looking at articles. This category includes tens of thousands of articles, including many that are non-notable and a few outright hoaxes. Because these articles don't have inbound links, few users ever see them, and they can often escape scrutiny indefinitely. Not all hoaxes are orphans (in a few cases, a crafty hoaxer has added a link in another article), but the great majority of hoaxes fall into this classification. The Doggs[edit]

    • Thanks for your help. I discovered some hoaxes or at least possible hoaxes in Wikipedia recently. I found them in Google by searching their template messages, especially "All articles lacking sources" and "All orphaned articles" together with quotations on each template and made sure the searches only goes to Wikipedia "site:en.wikipedia.org". I also added -"external links" because many or most hoax articles don't have any external links section, and legit articles tend to have that section; you can also add other terms to find articles based on certain topics. For example, in addition to the search terms in quotations I explained, I added "tv" to the search and discovered another possible hoax television related. I think you won't find all hoaxes with this method, but it could be easier to find one. TheGGoose (talk) 13:56, 26 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hoax bands[edit]

Can you add The Rock Gang (2011-2015) and The Meller Band (2014-2015) to the lists of hoaxes please? Apparently, the Meller Band is/was a real band that began about last year, but they tout themselves as a band that started in the 1960s. The article presented the fabrication as facts, not stating that it's actually an homage-type band. Hoaxes for archive[edit]

Inventor of a new type of popcorn.
Scottish actor, with refs and picture of other people.
Soviet physicist and inventor. Not entirely clear that this was a hoax, maybe just non-notable. See AfD
Copy of Steven Pinker with the name changed.
Professional basketball player. References and picture are about other people.
Non-existent "short story written by Guy de Maupassant".

They all pass the one-month threshold. I don't think any of them are interesting enough to be worth undeleting to put in the archive, except possibly Mama Mo Yeah. Sniffing around their creators' other edits, I have found some useful tidying-up to do.

With regard to the two false positives, by all means rehabilitate them if you have sources. Neither was deleted by AfD, so you don't need any permission. In fact Maurice Foxell was a PROD, so I can undelete him if you like. Regards, JohnCD (talk) 11:18, 2 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

    • Thanks! I've added the hoaxes (except the uncertain Popov page) to the applicable hoax lists. Can you undelete the Maurice Foxell article? In addition to the Glasgow Herald article from 1960, I'm also finding additional information (books, WorldCat references, etc.) indicating that the subject was both real and notable. It appears the hoax-hunting algorithm mentioned in the academic paper on hoaxes still needs a few adjustments to reduce the likelihood of false positives like this one.
