Recent addition to Austal[edit]

@Bogong: Howdy, thanks for applying your expertise to the Austal article. There were a few issues, which I addressed with my trailing edit, but your addition lacks references. Would you be so kind to provide your sources? Thanks! →‎ GS →‎ → 14:02, 28 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

My response:

Hello Grapefruit. I have no trouble with your modifications to the paragraph I wrote on the Austal page, except that you have removed my reference to Gross Tons and replaced it with (conventional) tons. In non military shipping, especially in relation to ferries and cruise liners Gross Tonnage is the standard measurement of a ships capacity. Note that it is a measure of the enclosed volume of a ship, NOT it's weight (or displacement). Because fast multi hull ferries are relatively light but have a lot of enclosed space, the number of Gross Tons is usually many times the displacement tonnage, so in that sense your edit wildly distorts the standard measure of gross tonnage.

I added my single background paragraph because while the majority of Austal built ships are ferries, the vast majority of the page is about Austal's naval and defense products, so I though the fast ferries they built should at least receive a few lines. What I wrote about the first decade of large, fast multi hull ferries in the 1990s is widely known within the ship building and ferry industries (feel free to ask absolutely anyone). So I can easily track down published references for these widely known facts (note I didn't add any opinion or analysis of Austal or the industry). However I don't see much point in spending an hour or two finding published sources so I can footnote things if there is a "gatekeeper" of the wikipedia page who will delete it. So you have my word that I'll footnote my little paragraph if it is substantially unaltered for a month (with the obvious exceptions of someone expanding it and hopefully you reverting tonnage to Gross tonnage). Thanks for your work. --Bogong (talk) 09:38, 29 March 2018 (UTC)

thanks for your list of shipyards[edit]

please note to survive the list needs a category (broader generic is fine) a lead sentence and a project tag on the talk page - these are fundamental elements that keep the ... whatevers... away JarrahTree 15:24, 12 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

If only - there were powers that be - this is a weird and wonderful place - and being the instigator of the maritime history project I have never thought of myself as the powers that be in third person, I am just another editor. Please understand there are no powers that be - just other people - and most of us (I cannot speak for all the others) are just other people at their computers editing wikipedia. Thanks for your efforts, it would be great to see more editing...

JarrahTree is just a user name of a real live person (mine) - not a power or third person computer generated logarithm. cheers JarrahTree 23:11, 12 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

hate to dissapoint you but I am not an administrator, and sorry to think your earlier editing experience has not been encouraging enough to call me suprisingly polite! JarrahTree 07:49, 13 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

We could include all the mining companies in this category. But wouldn't it be better just to include those with some particular historical significance? Rathfelder (talk) 14:44, 15 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

page watcher - I am concerned that I have found vast numbers of categories with mining in the title of the category and no sign of anything to do with mining project on the talk page...
the parallel with history mining and mining companies question raised - determining historical significance of mining companies could be quite tricky imho. JarrahTree 14:48, 15 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

License tagging for File:El Dorado Exp.jpg[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:El Dorado Exp.jpg. You don't seem to have indicated the license status of the image. Wikipedia uses a set of image copyright tags to indicate this information; to add a tag to the image, select the appropriate tag from this list, click on this link, then click the "Edit" tab at the top of the page and add the tag to the image's description. If there doesn't seem to be a suitable tag, the image is probably not appropriate for use on Wikipedia.

For help in choosing the correct tag, or for any other questions, leave a message on Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. Thank you for your cooperation. --ImageTaggingBot (talk) 04:30, 22 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

File permission problem with File:El Dorado Exp.jpg[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:El Dorado Exp.jpg. I noticed that while you provided a valid copyright licensing tag, there is no proof that the creator of the file has agreed to release it under the given license.

If you are the copyright holder for this media entirely yourself but have previously published it elsewhere (especially online), please either

  • make a note permitting reuse under the CC-BY-SA or another acceptable free license (see this list) at the site of the original publication; or
  • Send an email from an address associated with the original publication to [email protected], stating your ownership of the material and your intention to publish it under a free license. You can find a sample permission letter here. If you take this step, add {{permission pending}} to the file description page to prevent premature deletion.

If you did not create it entirely yourself, please ask the person who created the file to take one of the two steps listed above, or if the owner of the file has already given their permission to you via email, please forward that email to [email protected].

If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:File copyright tags#Fair use, and add a rationale justifying the file's use on the article or articles where it is included. See Wikipedia:File copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have provided evidence that their copyright owners have agreed to license their works under the tags you supplied, too. Here is a list of your uploads. Files lacking evidence of permission may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described in section F11 of the criteria for speedy deletion. You may wish to read Wikipedia's image use policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Salavat (talk) 03:41, 25 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
