Use for AWB - fixing disambig pages

Martin came and volunteered, and I turned him away, becaue we weren't ready. But that was in the "*LAdisambig cleanup" section. The "*dis cleanup" might be more amenable to using a bot, at least on those pages that don't have "(disambiguation)" in the name.

• right now, the What links here for these templates is pretty worthless. In one case, it listed no references, although there were several hundred pages in the category it adds.
• so, we have to use the category lists. Can this tool do that?
• As an example, {{Townshipdis}} puts things into Category: Township disambiguation. We can use the category list to find the pages, and change the old template to {{disambig}}. Each page name has to be saved, as it is then added to Wikipedia:Multiple-place names.

Well, that's an easy one, so I'll watch here to see whether you think it's doable, or a different kind of bot is required. I'm a FireFox on MacOSX kinda guy....

The next is Category:Geographical locations sharing the same title. The pages here have {{geodis}}, which needs to change to {{disambig}}. As above, the names need to be checked/added to the Wikipedia:Multiple-place names list.

The twist is leaving the names with "... (disambiguation)" in place, as each needs to be checked against its Primary by hand, and added to a different list. Whenever you happen to have a spare moment....

And could you tell me how you get the category into a list? I've not been able to figure that out.

Computer help desk

Hi BlueMoose,

I don't mind that you added your software to the help desk at all; it sounds like your C# program is a lot faster as parsing the XML than my Perl module is - good job. =) Would you be interested in helping out around the help desk? I noticed on your user page you had a program that can sort out red-links from blue ones on a page. There is a case that needs help now that is right up that ally. If you don't feel like helping thats no big deal, but if you do, I know it would be appreciated by the fellow who opened the ticket. Adding cats, not re-cat

Hi. Can I add new cats (not re-cat) with AutoWikiBrowser or do I need to register a bot account to use category.py? All I want to do is add a list of pages in non-controversial categories to articles in sub-cats of Category:Natural history I have a list of articles, such as "Trees of California", that need to be added to Category:Trees of California, etc; nothing fancy. pictures on Sculpture of the United States page

I don't understand why you prefer to have pictures grouped together rather placed individually within relevant text -- which seems more convenient to me -- and reminds me of the way some print encyclopedias have been formatted -- as well as the way one receives information while walking through an art museum. Hi Bluemoose,

Thanks for signing up at the computer help desk, I really appreciate it. =) If you find you have the time I had an idea for a cleanup project that could be organized. I believe that cleanup projects serve as advertising for the computer help desk project. So not only does it help make Wikipedia better, it gets the word out about the project too, always a good thing. Anyway, the idea is fairly simple. Its policy that Wikipedia articles follow a standard introductory format, such as

In politics, a constitution is a system, often codified in a written document,

The rough logic for the cleanup project would entail making sure the first word of every article in the default namespace is literally "In" and that the first bolded word is the title of the article. This is likely to drum up a lot of false-positives and might have to be refined. If you are interested, give it a shot, and feel free to ask me questions. I had a friend whose version of that was, "You learn something everyday, if you start out dumb enough." and I find my self quoting him quite a lot. Meanwhile, were you the one who straightened up the photos in the Sculpture of the United States article? I think it is good now, but there needs to be a bit more shifting around to make the grouping make better sense [to me]. AWB Registration

Hi, I was wondering if I could be added to the registration list. I understand that the there is a recommended 500 edit minimum in order to weed out those that may or may not understand what they are doing. I am asking because I feel that I have a good idea of what to do and whatnot. (I'm a CSE major, I'm one of those people that others hate for looking at a piece of technology and understanding how everything works in 10 minutes.) It would make doing the Unstubby stubs project and disambiguation links I was working on a lot easier, but if I need to get to 500 edits first, that's cool. Blue bot external links

One of my pet peeves is "External link" sections that have more than one link. Do you think you can make Bluebot find these cases and change them to the plural? Maybe something like checking if the External link section contains more than one "*". Qutezuce 23:50, 23 January 2006 (UTC)

When I was trying to code the AWB to reorder the end sections (external links, references, see also, etc.) I found that it was extremely difficult to write a code that found the end of each section. It worked, it just sometimes brought another section with it. I think, then, that it would be impossible to see how many bullets are in external links without spilling into the next section occasionally. I'm not saying it can't be done - it could look on the two lines following external links to see if they both start with a bullet, but that's not foolproof. After being enabled to use AWB I tried to start it but I keep getting told its an out of date version. (The about dialog says 1.7.1)

So sorry to ask but how to get the 1.7.4 version? I tried the link on wp:awb page [1] but its version 1.7.1.

Hi Martin. I see you have been busy hunting for duplicate words, and you have even found one in a an article I am writing: Cast Courts (Victoria and Albert Museum). I am not much bothered about the edit, but the article was marked with a ((Inuseuntil)) template. Uncategorised good articles

The reason to remove and not strikethrough articles when they are done in User:Bluemoose/Uncategorised_good_articles is so that AWB doesn't pick them up, correct? Ditto Global public good, which had little more than one sentence of content that wasn't already elsewhere. Don't get me wrong, we want articles about economic topics, but we might as well have redirects as substubs. BTW, the Wikipedia article was the top Google result for 'Accounting good', which suggests to me there wasn't too much interest in [[Good (accounting); if you look at the article it was originalyl created by Cecropia to distinguish a good from a service, hasn't grown much since, and where it did grow was mainly from random accretion. Interesting suggestion to rename Good (economics). I would have no objection, so long as there is only one article on the topic, and Good (economics) redirects there; essentially I don't think there's enough differentiation in the topics to sustain several articles. DatabaseSearchTool request

Hi, Bluemoose. I'm part of WP:ALBUMS and I'm working on listing and converting Albums needing conversions. Example of bad infobox: Where the Happy People Go. Good infobox: Dry As a Bone. We found several from just doing a Wikipedia search for bgcolor="orange" album. (orange is the infobox color). Similar searches for plum, darkseagreen yield results. Unfortunately, this is outdated as it often yields results which do in fact have current infoboxes. Could you with your magic of regular expressions, find album articles that have the old-style infobox? Maybe you can review the format of old-style (which is not standardized unfortunately)? I have an idea, Gflores! Use the AWB to make a list from Category:1990 albums, Category:1991 albums, etc so you have all albums in the AWB's list. Then, apply general fixes to all articles but do an "ignore if contains" for {{album infobox. Then, go to your contribs and all the articles you just edited are the albums that do not have the new infobox! --M@thwiz2020 01:06, 5 February 2006 (UTC)

I ran something at wikisign.org that looks like a good start [2]. If finds everything in a category ending with "albums" that contains "bgcolor" but does not use {{Album infobox}} or {{Infobox Album}}. It may have false positives right now because the database dump being used does not correctly report all links to templates. I only found the site recently. It's quite nice. However, it does have a limit of 1000. I turned it into a count, so we'll see how many it finds (the results will be here when it completes which could be 5-15 minutes or so). Thanks for providing AWB. At some point in the future I might like to have the source code, both to help the project and also to see if I could modify it to work on other (i.e. my!) Mediawiki sites, if that would be alright. I don't need it just yet as I have too many other things on the go.

It's a nice idea and integrating with IE is the smart way to do it if you don't mind being tied to Windows. This project has a lot of potential I think. Bot request: Wikification request bot

Greetings, Bluemoose. From Bot requests I am given to understand that you work on bots that work on backlogs. Looking at the serious backlog on Category: Cleanup by month, I had a bot idea I'd like to suggest. The biggest problem with "cleanup" right now is sorting: we have over 12,000 articles, and "cleanup" is waaaay too general to figure out what's wrong with the page.

One easily automated task is to hunt through a page and figure out how many words are hyperlinked. A page with a very low hyperlink ratio, say 0.5% or lower (less than 1 in 200 words), is likely to have never been wikified and so needs to be labeled with {{wikify}}. Such a bot could be run on the whole database, but is urgently needed for the cleanup crew. Would such a bot be possible? Alba 17:50, 6 February 2006 (UTC)

I can easily track down and make a list of unwikified articles that have the cleanup tag, using the database dump. However the fully automatic bot I use is a pywikibot, which I don't really know how to re-configure, User:AllyUnion, User:Cryptic, and User:Beland may be more helpful in making a bot to do the re-tagging, if I remember correctly Beland has a bot that changes cleanup tags already, so he may be most helpful. thanks Martin 18:00, 6 February 2006 (UTC)

I just noticed Go for it!'s request. I have the Jan. 25 db dump loaded on my computer and extract this information, so could handle the request. The number of pages is really huge (102,574), so it will be necessary to weed out all the individual RFA, VFD, RFC, POTD, ... pages. I noticed this page is a mess - people are adding their names to the top and bottom of the list. Since you seem to be running the thing, I was wondering if you might consider making it clear which end of the list people should add their names - or maybe making it a bit more idiotproof by forcing them to number their additions.

I'd also like to thank you for the AWB. It's a great tool - my only (minor) gripes are that (i) it has to run in the foreground (since it's great in the background while you are doing something else) and (ii) it runs off IE. This means AWB will be able call the Javascript behind the "save", "preview" and "show changes" buttons, rather than the current method which is slightly problematic as you pointed out. The problem I have now is that I don't know what the Javascript is that I need to call, and I just can't work it out either, maybe you have more of an idea? I've got ABCD's "Force Edit Summary" extension installed in my custom Javascript and it appears that the click button is accessed as document.forms.editform.wpSave. Is there a method on that which you can invoke which will click it? IE unicode URL problem with AWB

On http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=fh;en-us;kbhowto I entered "Internet Explorer URL unicode". Second entry in the list was http://support.microsoft.com/kb/303612/en-us. Which refers to http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/workshop/author/dhtml/reference/charsets/charset4.asp. Just thought that maybe could help. Sorry if silly. AWB without focus

probably you know about this, but when AWB is running, and while it's loading next article, if I switch to another window to do other things, when I return to AWB it doesn't show up the diff, but rather stalled at the dialog, and i then have to click on "show changes" manually to get the diff. This doesn't happen when AWB stays on foreground while loading the article. Any clue or a workaround? (since having AWB on foreground prevents me to do some work while it loads, and when there are many articles on queue, it's a lot of time wasted). -- ( drini's page ☎ ) 04:47, 10 February 2006 (UTC)

AWB + Java

Hi, I have been working on trying to get AWB to save, show changes and preview by calling the javascript behind the buttons, rather than simulating actually clicking the buttons as it does at present. I have found it a bit difficult, but have progressed so now it can call some java (e.g. the java that inserts the unusual fonts, "insertTags"), unfortunately I just can't work out how to call the java behind the buttons, I suspect you probably know as you have the expert java user box thing on your user page. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated, I'll send you the test program to demonstrate how to do what I have worked out + newest AWB if you want. many thanks! Martin 13:19, 10 February 2006 (UTC)

I think, though, that using javascript will eliminate the out-of-focus problem. New messages in AWB

Hey, in AWB, whenever there are new messages, it tells me to read them and doesn't let me do anything. However, if the page has one of those fake new messages boxes on it, it still doesn't let me do anything, and, since I cant read fake messages, it never stops until I try going to another page. AWB bug?

When doing auto tag, I noticed the AWB will auto-bold the article name, such as on article Samuel Alito it will auto '''Samuel Alito''' the first instance of the name. Problem I've discovered is it does this indiscriminately even if the article name is found in an [[Image:]] tag, for example on the top of Samuel Alito it has the image Image:Samuel Alito Court of Appeals_photo.jpg. What AWB did was auto bold that "Samuel Alito" part of the image tag, thereby breaking the image. See edit here. —akghetto ^talk 08:04, 14 February 2006 (UTC)

I dont know who else to go to this with but I trust you so... I have no idea what to do with the template Template:PATCO line. I have no clue how to read it or fill it in. The AWB is a semi-automated Wikipedia editor developed by Bluemoose. It can repair bad links, sort the interwiki links, recategorize articles, auto-tag as stubs, find-and-replace, and much, much more. You can download it by following the directions at WP:AWB. However, it is still in development, so you must check each edit before saving. (The AWB automatically shows the diffs after each edit unless you select otherwise from the "general" menu in the program.) Do not edit too quickly, either, unless you have a bot account. Finally, don't make miniscule edits such as adding/removing a single line. Other than that, it is perfect for repairing bad links, removing deleted categories, and more! AWB stuck adding things to watchlist

Hi there! I just started playing with AWB, replacing misspellings like 'develope' to 'develop' and I can't seem to keep AWB from adding my edits to my watchlist. The menu item for it is off yet it still persists. Strange no?

In response to the first question, go to Special:Preferences and then click on "editing". If "add all pages you edit to your watchlist" is selected, they will all be added, even if the option is deselected on the AWB. As for the second question, check the box that says "regex" and then type in a regular expression. For example, to skip "cant language" and "cant hook", you can skip pages containing the regex "cant (language|hook)", where "|" means OR. If you want it to still edit the page, but just not that particular instance, then change the find and replace settings. Set the find and replace to regex enabled and first replace "cant" with "can't". Then, replace "can't (language|hook)" with "cant $1". This way, all cants become can't but then can't language becomes cant language (the $1 means whatever was in the first set of parentheses). If this doesn't work, just ask me and I'll help or Bluemoose may be able to isolate the problem. If you leave a message here, I can still respond since I have Bluemoose's talk page on my watch list. AWB Error

I think I'm going crazy. I could have sworn that earlier today the application in my taskbar was running as "AutoWikiBrower" (without the "s"), but now it's fixed. Does that variable call the website or something or am I just nuts?

The real reason I'm writing is to ask to get a copy of the source for AWB. I'd like to write some extensions for it (simple macros) to conduct specific, tedious tasks that I'm working on. Edit summary

Hi. I've recently found a number of edit summaries on my watchlist starting with "AWB assisted ...".

Starting your edit summary with a link promoting some software makes it slower for me to scan my watchlist. It's also frustrating because I can't even run Windows software on my computer, so it feels a bit like you are spamming my watchlist (no offence intended). Would you mind setting your AWB software so that it doesn't add the promotional link to the edit summary, or at least so it puts it at the end, like "... using AWB"?
