Linking years

Just don't do it. You've been told several times by various people above that this is not the Wikipedia style, yet you went through Russell B. Cummings and re-linked all of the years that I had de-linked. You also added back in a bunch of links to plain English words and unnecessary spaces between article sections. And you left no edit sumamry to explain why you had done this. These edits are just a waste of your time and my time. Ground Zero | t 15:43, 2 May 2008 (UTC)

To Billy Hathorn for 25 successful DYK's. Congratulations! Gatoclass (talk) 12:05, 7 May 2008 (UTC)
The 50 DYK Medal
To Billy Hathorn for your prolific work in creating 50 DYK biographies and other articles of interest. Gatoclass (talk) 12:05, 7 May 2008 (UTC)

About time someone got around to awarding these. Well done Billy! Gatoclass (talk) 12:05, 7 May 2008 (UTC)

BTW you may want to enter yourself in the DYK Hall of Fame. You have 57 DYK's by my count (not including DYK's deleted through AFD's, which I don't think would count). Cheers, Gatoclass (talk) 12:14, 7 May 2008 (UTC)

Eddy Shell

You need to use the {{cite web}} template to get the ref to display correctly. {{cite web|url=|title=|accessdate=|publisher=}} is the minimum information required to make it work. Mjroots (talk) 05:07, 16 May 2008 (UTC)

How to use the cite web template:-

Say you want to use this website as a reference:-

http://www.shreveporttimes.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080508/OBITUARIES01/805080334/1060/NEWS01

  • Using the template, the url goes in here
    {{cite web|url=http://www.shreveporttimes.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080508/OBITUARIES01/805080334/1060/NEWS01|title=|accessdate=|publisher=}}
  • Then the title of the aricle goes in here

{{cite web|url=http://www.shreveporttimes.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080508/OBITUARIES01/805080334/1060/NEWS01|title=Eddy Shell given his final salutes|accessdate=|publisher=}}

  • Then the access date goes in here
    {{cite web|url=http://www.shreveporttimes.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080508/OBITUARIES01/805080334/1060/NEWS01|title=Eddy Shell given his final salutes|accessdate=2008-05-16|publisher=}}
  • Finally the publisher goes in here
{{cite web|url=http://www.shreveporttimes.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080508/OBITUARIES01/805080334/1060/NEWS01|title=Eddy Shell given his final salutes|accessdate=2008-05-16|publisher=Shreveport Times}}, which, when given a refname produces a ref like this.[1] and appears in the reflist like this:-
  1. ^ "Eddy Shell given his final salutes". Shreveport Times. Retrieved 2008-05-16.

Hope that explains things for you. Mjroots (talk) 12:51, 16 May 2008 (UTC)

IMDB

Wikipedians have decided in their wisdom that IMDB does not qualify as a reliable source. IIRC, that is because IMDB is itself a kind of Wiki that anyone can edit.

I don't make the rules, I just help ensure that DYK abides by them. Gatoclass (talk) 04:23, 19 May 2008 (UTC)

Can't really help you there Billy, You will have to look around for some good alternatives. BTW I think you have to register to be able to edit at IMDB. Gatoclass (talk) 12:43, 19 May 2008 (UTC)

Your recent image uploads

I notice that you have uploaded several images and noted that the site on which you found them does not expressly claim copyright. However, copyright doesn't work like that. By default, when something is published - to the web or any other medium - it is automatically copyrighted unless there is an explicit release stating otherwise. That's the reason many of your recent uploads have been caught by our image-patrol bots as you see in the above messages. If you want to use these images, you have two options:

  • Use them despite their copyright, subject to the standards of our Wikipedia:Non-free content policy.
  • Write the copyright holders and have them send a clear statement that they release the image(s) to the public domain, or under a Wikipedia-compatible license such as the GFDL or a Creative Commons license, to [email protected]

Thanks - let me know if you have questions. I know our image policies can sometimes be overwhelming. (ESkog)(Talk) 02:14, 2 July 2008 (UTC)

Oops, just thought of something else - I noticed too that you write on several description pages that you do not know the copyright status of an image. If you don't know whether an image is copyrighted, in future you should avoid uploading it until you can confirm it one way or the other. It can take a lot of work to clean up after unconfirmed uploads such as these. (ESkog)(Talk) 02:16, 2 July 2008 (UTC)

Good work expanding Buffalo Gap, Texas. Regarding your DYK nomination, as the article stands, it is 2,814 characters short of 5x expansion. Placement of images in articles

Welcome to Wikipedia. Although everyone is welcome to contribute constructively to the encyclopedia, you may not know that Wikipedia has a Manual of Style that should be followed to maintain a consistent, encyclopedic appearance. Using different styles throughout the encyclopedia makes it harder to read. Please take a look at the welcome page to learn more about contributing to this encyclopedia. Thank you. Consider using Wikimedia Commons for the images that will not fit in the article. Thanks for adding pictures; they really enhance things. →Wordbuilder (talk) 20:30, 25 July 2008 (UTC)

A tag has been placed on Image:Billy Joe Booth Billy 202.jpg requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section I1 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the image is a redundant copy (all pixels the same or scaled down) of an image in the same file format, which is on Wikipedia (not on Commons), and all inward links have been updated.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on [[ Talk:Image:Billy Joe Booth Billy 202.jpg|the talk page]] explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the article meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Image:Dublin Dr Pepper IMG 0959.JPG listed for deletion

An image or media file that you uploaded or altered, Image:Dublin Dr Pepper IMG 0959.JPG, has been listed at Wikipedia:Images and media for deletion. Please see the discussion to see why this is (you may have to search for the title of the image to find its entry), if you are interested in it not being deleted. Thank you. A tag has been placed on Image:Ponce De Leon IMG 0288.JPG requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section I1 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the image is a redundant copy (all pixels the same or scaled down) of an image in the same file format, which is on Wikipedia (not on Commons), and all inward links have been updated.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on [[ Talk:Image:Ponce De Leon IMG 0288.JPG|the talk page]] explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the article meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. DYK? noms

NB: You may want to shorten your talk page. There are two ways: either archive your talk page (preferred) or refactor it.

I'm pretty sure you already know, but just to be certain, two of your submissions recently did not meet all of the newness criteria. To help, I'll reproduce that relevant criteria below. Remember that the 5x expansion refers to the readable prose:

  1. New - A nominated article must be new.
    • For purposes of DYK, a "new" article is no more than five days old. This does not include articles split from older articles.
    • Former redirects, stubs, or other short articles that have been expanded fivefold or more within the last five days are also acceptable as "new" articles. Existing articles that have been expanded to only twice or three times their previous length are not eligible for DYK.
  2. Long enough - The article must be of sufficient length.
    • Articles should have a minimum of 1,500 characters (around 1.5 kilobytes) in main body prose (ignoring infoboxes, categories, references, lists, and tables). The number of characters may be measured using this tool.

Hello, this is a message from an automated bot. A tag has been placed on Image:C. Bobcats IMG 0689.JPG, by another Wikipedia user, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. The tag claims that it should be speedily deleted because Image:C. Bobcats IMG 0689.JPG is a duplicate of an already existing article, category or image.

To contest the tagging and request that administrators wait before possibly deleting Image:C. Bobcats IMG 0689.JPG, please affix the template {{hangon}} to the page, and put a note on its talk page. If the article has already been deleted, see the advice and instructions at WP:WMD. Feel free to contact the bot operator if you have any questions about this or any problems with this bot, bearing in mind that this bot is only informing you of the nomination for speedy deletion; it does not perform any nominations or deletions itself. To see the user who deleted the page, click here CSDWarnBot (talk) 17:21, 8 August 2008 (UTC)

Thank you for uploading images/media to Wikipedia! As you may know, there is another Wikimedia Foundation project called Wikimedia Commons, a central media repository for all free media. In future, please upload media there instead (see m:Help:Unified login). That way, all of the other language Wikipedias can use them too, as well as our many sister projects. This will also allow our visitors to search for, view and use our media in one central location. If you wish to move previous uploads to Commons, see Wikipedia:Moving images to the Commons (you may view images you have previously uploaded by going to your user contributions on the left and choosing the 'image' namespace from the drop down box). Please note that non-free content, such as images claimed as fair use, cannot be uploaded to the Wikimedia Commons. Help us spread the word about Commons by informing other users, and please continue uploading! LegoKontribsTalkM 05:09, 13 August 2008 (UTC)

Image Copyright problem
Image Copyright problem

Thanks for uploading Image:Len Blaylock on school board 003.jpg. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, then a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a restatement of that website's terms of use of its content, is usually sufficient information. However, if the copyright holder is different from the website's publisher, their copyright should also be acknowledged.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the image is copyrighted under a non-free license (per Wikipedia:Fair use) then the image will be deleted 48 hours after 19:45, 13 August 2008 (UTC). If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. J Milburn (talk) 19:45, 13 August 2008 (UTC)

Re: Message left on my talk page

(Note that new messages should be at the bottom of the page). If the image was taken so recently, why do you believe that it is out of copyright? J Milburn (talk) 20:06, 13 August 2008 (UTC)

It was a snapshot taken at a GOP meeting by a friend of Mr. Blaylock, who has it in his possession. He gave it to me for use, and I will return it thereafter. 21:42, 13 August 2008 (UTC)

Blaylock photos

All four photos were sent to me as a gift from Mr. Blaylock, who had them in his scrapbook. I told him I would return them after use.21:43, 13 August 2008 (UTC)

Until you can verify that the copyright holders of the images (probably the people who took them) have released the images into the public domain, they should not be used. J Milburn (talk) 21:51, 13 August 2008 (UTC)

Image Copyright problem

Thank you for uploading Image:Piano 07-04-2008 02;49;47PM.JPG. However, it currently is missing information on its copyright status. Wikipedia takes copyright very seriously. It may be deleted soon, unless we can determine the license and the source of the image. If you know this information, then you can add a copyright tag to the image description page.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their license and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link.

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thanks again for your cooperation. Sdrtirs (talk) 01:51, 15 August 2008 (UTC)

What you need to do

  1. Go to Wikipedia:Image copyright tags and choose a copyright license for this image. If you want see more details about each license, see Wikipedia:Copyright FAQ#Licenses.
  2. Inserting the copyright tag that you chose on the image description page.

Then, it's all done. Have a good work! Regards, Sdrtirs (talk) 02:03, 15 August 2008 (UTC)

Image copyright problem with Image:Swimmers at Lake Bruin IMG 1256.JPG

Thanks for uploading Image:Swimmers at Lake Bruin IMG 1256.JPG. The image has been identified as not specifying the copyright status of the image, which is required by Wikipedia's policy on images. Even if you created the image yourself, you still need to release it so Wikipedia can use it. If you don't indicate the copyright status of the image on the image's description page, using an appropriate copyright tag, it may be deleted some time in the next seven days. If you made this image yourself, you can use copyright tags like {{PD-self}} (to release all rights), {{self|CC-by-sa-3.0|GFDL}} (to require that you be credited), or any tag here - just go to the image, click edit, and add one of those. If you have uploaded other images, please verify that you have provided copyright information for them as well.

For more information on using images, see the following pages:

This is an automated notice by STBotI. For assistance on the image use policy, see Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. NOTE: once you correct this, please remove the tag from the image's page. STBotI (talk) 01:35, 24 August 2008 (UTC)
