Welcome[edit]

Welcome Students!

Dear Bfpage/archive/July 2015,
Welcome to Wikipedia! Your contributions are greatly appreciated. It appears you are participating in a class project. If you haven't done so already, your instructor will probably encourage you to go through the training for students.

If you need help, check out Wikipedia:Questions, ask me on my talk page, or ask your question on this page and then place {{Help me}} before the question. Other wikipedians are very pleased to help you and support you in your coursework. Please also read this helpful advice for students.
Before you create an article, make sure you understand what kind of articles are accepted here. Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, and while many topics are encyclopedic, some things are not.
Your instructor or professor may wish to set up a course page, and if your class doesn't already have one please tell your instructor about this helpful tool. Feel free to place this text: {{Educational assignment}} on the talk page of any articles you are working on as part of your Wikipedia-related course assignment. This will let other editors know this article is a subject of an educational assignment and aid your communication with them. You will typically find them to be quite helpful.
We hope you like your course work would love to have you to stay even after your assignment is finished! Best Regards,

Wow[edit]

Thanks for posting a link to that article BF! I had no idea how we had missed it, but it's directly relevant to my interests, as well as a bunch of those of my friends. Here is a systematic review that back up the resuts even more strongly. Best, Kevin Gorman (talk) 23:15, 9 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

That is WAY too funny. Here we go, let's see if I can make a real-live, notable article out of this...you want to make a bet??? LOL!

  • I'd actually love to. I thnk have a decent idea of how to frame it, make it, abide by medrs, and be funny and informative. @Keilana: - even though it is a definitely a slightly less funny name than Death during consensual sex I'm pretty sure this could be a wortwhile sideproject , especially since it seesms to have found actual realworld use. Sorry if parts of this don't a whole lot of sense currently - My current medical situation has me on 60mg of oxycodone, when I have no tolerance. It's effecting my ability to type way more than my ability to think, frustratingly. If this lasts more than 48 hours,I' goingto get a copy of Dragon or someething. Kevin Gorman (talk) 22:01, 10 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Finally, some wikpedians with a sense of humor. I am very proud of creating a number of articles such as: Two-letter English words, Empathy in Chickens, Animal attacks, and Surgical knot. Jump right in and edit the article on its draft page. Best Regards,

Once I'm slightly less medicated, I'll defintitely back :) I find it pretty neat that we live in a era where wwe collaboratively and create a truly encyclopedic (at least in my opinion) about a topic quite likethsi Kevin Gorman (talk)
You are not going to believe this quote I found in a MEDR-S source:

:::"...patients given a continuous infusion of Coca-Cola by nasogastric tube over 12 hours showed complete resolution of bezoars. If you cannot find a can of Coke, perhaps Pepsi will do the trick, assuming it does not cause dysPEPSIa."[1]

Thanks for the line! I am planning to get back into editing. I start my PhD in virology in a couple weeks and will be back on this site much more frequently!

I will work on citations, I am still figuring out how everything works around here but will do my best to cite every statement. I have access to a good number of papers but can always use an extra pair of eyes. See you around!

Normally I don't copy word for word, but some of us recently had a discussion on the college football page about Navy Midshipmen football results in that it does not follow any other college football team format, and has not been updated in a while. We discussed moving results to each yearly page, and will be improved from there, with the original page nominated for deletion....This will put the information in a more standard format....Pvmoutside (talk) 11:18, 11 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Excellent! You know exactly what you are doing. Good luck on what you are planning. Best Regards.

Disambiguation link notification for July 14[edit]

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Coca-Cola treatment of phytobezoars, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Civil War. Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

Sorry that I am so tough on you[edit]

…but as we say, every good student deserves a good examination (referring to their final doctoral oral exam). See my User page, Leprof_7272, for more on why this place concerns me so much, with regard to wasted time and effort. (Putting the comments I made at the empathy page, together with the content of my User page, and as a mother and grandmother you will understand this "child" very well. Cheers. Thank you again for your response. I did read your user page and, for want of a better term, I was 'moved' by what you wrote. I don't believe it applies to all articles since anything notable by secondary sources can have an article and neither you or me can change that. But you may find that articles in Project Medicine may require more of what you know and articles that your talents could be of great value. Important, highly viewed medical articles are pitifully filled with outdated references. Also I think I better understand what you mean by correlation does not equal causation, but what I am truly wondering is that if there are many studies that continue, over decades, correlate with the idea that bacteria can cause cancer are we not approaching causation? If, for example, Koch's postulates can not be applied to those infectious agents that take decades to develop, such as Hepatitis A, due partly to transmission by two routes, sexually and vertically but yet the infection does not develop into cancer if the population is vaccinated, is this not causation. I truly look forward to your reply. Best Regards,
  Bfpage |leave a message  11:55, 17 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
btw the empathy in chicken article was created by me exactly for the reasons that you state-that verifiability (if that is a word} does not an encyclopedia article make. Check out Pain in invertebrates. Empathy in chickes was intended to 'spoof' that article. I think there is also an article Pain in fish. I am not a big fan of animal rights and found these two articles to be essays. My favorite line was that 'bees are pessimistic". My husband and I laugh about that all the time.

Nomination of Empathy in chickens for deletion[edit]

A discussion is taking place as to whether the article Empathy in chickens is suitable for inclusion in Wikipedia according to Wikipedia's policies and guidelines or whether it should be deleted.

The article will be discussed at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Empathy in chickens until a consensus is reached, and anyone is welcome to contribute to the discussion. The nomination will explain the policies and guidelines which are of concern. The discussion focuses on high-quality evidence and our policies and guidelines.

Users may edit the article during the discussion, including to improve the article to address concerns raised in the discussion. However, do not remove the article-for-deletion notice from the top of the article. —Largo Plazo (talk) 11:58, 17 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Bfpage

I am not allowed to edit medical articles, but would point out that your recent edit to List of human diseases associated with infectious pathogens does not really make sense. You wrote: "This article is a list of of [sic] diseases that are associated with a disease".

The article is in fact a list of pathogens associated with a diseases. Drgao (talk) 22:18, 20 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

You are absolutely correct. I will change my embarrassing edits asap.

Welcoming Committee[edit]

Thank you for the kind words and the barnstar! I would be very interested in helping with the "Welcoming Committee" here on Wikipedia, because it is important to let new editors know that they are valued ad important. I feel that I do a lot for Wikipedia, yet generally the only time people come to my talk page is to complain about the one thing I did wrong. It feels like many editors forget what its like to be new here, and treat me with such condescension. Your message was the first time in recent memory that I have actually been recognized for what I've done right, rather than what I'e done wrong. Please give me some more information on this "Welcoming Committee," because I would like to treat new editors better than I was treated. Thank you! Rswallis10 (talk) 14:11, 24 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Tuesday[edit]

Hi BFP -

I recently saw a ping you had sent to me some time ago, but only when it got sent to your archives. I'm going to be out of town until Tuesday, PST. I'm sorry for not getting to your queries sooner, I both just have erratic health issues and managed to get my whole system pretty trojaned out right around the time of your original message. I would ask that you start a section on my talk page on Tuesday so that we can have a discussion about remaining issues you have around this set of issues, and so that we can work out a firmer/more collaboratve set of guidelines. I'm sorry I didn't get to your query sooner, but this has not been the easiest month.

Once I'm back on-wiki and you have started a section on my userpage, I think we can pretty much consider it a temporary exemption to the protocols we set up - but be aware that all general WP rules still apply, and if another user takes too much of an issue they could escalate it again further or take the issue beyond me and back to ANI, etc Since some time has elapsed and you will be primarily be talking directly to me unless someone else wants to contribute (and if they do so productively on my talk page, I'll let them - if they troll, I'll remove them at my discretion,) you may have to take other peoples' lack of objections to my actions as at least a belief on their part that with, whatever 'final' standards we work out, you'll be a productive editor who didn't do what they previously felt violated WP's policies. (I just say that because it's a pretty 'stale' issue by WP standards by now, and we usually ignore even pretty bad behavior if it's stale - so honestly if I fully reviewed all diffs and saw that someone had done something I would have blocked them at the time, I wouldn't block them for it now, though depending on it's severity I might expect at least an acknowledgement of it on their part (though I reserve the right to let issues go if I feel that bringing them back up would generate more heat than light - i.e., if bringing them up again just would not be worth it.)

I would suggest not starting the section on my talk until Tuesday, since I won't be around to respond, and not discussing any remaining details in depth until then besides a general 'tuesday sounds good' or 'lets do thursday instead' - I suggest so just because people could escalate what they felt was inappropriate behavior on your part to ANI if they felt it was egregious enough, and in some unfortunate situation I might return on Tuesday to find a block placed on you that I'd have trouble justifying modifying (though I doubt that will happen/certainly hope it won't.) Generally speaking, few admins would feel comfortable altering unblock agreements of the sort worked out between an admin and a person they had unblocked, unless the unblocking admin had totally disappeared.

That said, I'm glad to see you've been and and about, at least a little. I apologize for not getting to this sooner - it totally deserved sooner attention on my part, I just had a particularly challenging month. That said, I look forward to having a productive discussion with you on Tuesday, and hope things go well :) I will note here as I have before, that I feel that some of the conditions you set were harsher than were necessary, and would be totally fine with altering some of them/making some of them looser than they are currently.

Best, Kevin Gorman (talk) 05:58, 25 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

It's good to here from. I hate to tell you that the 'guidelines' have sort of moved to the back of my mind; I have been editing other types of things and have begun to translate some content into Haitian kreyol. Some WMF contractor found out that I can read and write Ayisian kreyol and put me to work for a while.
It will be good to go over the type of stuff that you refer to so that, I mean this sincerely, I don't want to stumble into a similar situation in the future. As a matter of fact, I got curious about another editor and figured out there is a lot of overlap in our editing. So I am trying to be 'smart' about the situation and back off to try and minimize the counts that would appear on the 'never-wrong' editor interaction analyzer tool'. Have some nice days off. I SAW YOU ON TOUTUBE! How funny is that? Best Regards,
  Bfpage |leave a message  17:58, 25 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  • Kevin Gorman I hate to remind you that the "inappropriate behavior" as raised at the last AN/I amounted to the editing of a few category pages. Yes I appreciate that there were previous issues but this is what we are dealing with. GregKaye 09:48, 12 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
