File permission problem with File:Hank Risan, CEO of Media Rights Technologies.jpg[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:Hank Risan, CEO of Media Rights Technologies.jpg. I noticed that while you provided a valid copyright licensing tag, there is no proof that the creator of the file has agreed to release it under the given license.

If you created this media entirely yourself but have previously published it elsewhere (especially online), please either

  • make a note permitting reuse under the CC-BY-SA or another acceptable free license (see this list) at the site of the original publication; or
  • Send an email from an address associated with the original publication to [email protected], stating your ownership of the material and your intention to publish it under a free license. You can find a sample permission letter here. If you take this step, add {{OTRS pending}} to the file description page to prevent premature deletion.

If you did not create it entirely yourself, please ask the person who created the file to take one of the two steps listed above, or if the owner of the file has already given their permission to you via email, please forward that email to [email protected].

If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:File copyright tags#Fair use, and add a rationale justifying the file's use on the article or articles where it is included. See Wikipedia:File copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have provided evidence that their copyright owners have agreed to license their works under the tags you supplied, too. You can find a list of files you have created in your upload log. Files lacking evidence of permission may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. You may wish to read the Wikipedia's image use policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. LGA talkedits 02:15, 9 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Name[edit]

My nickname stands for "bluebeatmusicman." I wish I'd chosen "wolfman" or "icecreamman" since the nickname has been asked about. Fyi, my name is Mark, not Hank. I plan to write an article about another individual who I greatly admire: an artist named Gaylen Hansen. I won't use the nickname, "gaylenhansenman."

Very important information about copyright[edit]

Just because Mr Risan owns the physical paintings by Mr Sexton, that doesn't mean he owns their copyright. The paintings will remain under copyright until approximately 75 years after Mr Sexton's death -- and Mr Sexton only died 18 years ago.

That's not to say that a Wikipedia article about Mr Sexton can't include a photo of one of his paintings, but it would have to be under terms of "fair use" -- and if we're claiming "fair use" for an image, that image can only be in an article. Nowhere else on Wikipedia, not even a sandbox draft of an article. I've deleted the image for now; let me know when the article is ready and I'll restore the image. DS (talk) 20:20, 22 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

... and when I went back to check if you'd noticed the message, I saw that your draft had been approved, so I restored the image and added a proper copyright notice. So... never mind. (But for future reference, copyright on a painting covers photos of that painting.)DS (talk) 13:15, 23 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Orphaned non-free media (File:"Modernism" oil painting by Fred Sexton, circa 1940s.png)[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:"Modernism" oil painting by Fred Sexton, circa 1940s.png. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. Werieth (talk) 13:51, 10 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Re: your question regarding AfC[edit]

Hey, Bbmusicianman

I declined it because it had already been deleted via Wikipedia: Articles for Deletion twice (See Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Jonathan Hay (publicist) and Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Jonathan Hay (publicist) (2nd nomination). The AfDs also had a valid OTRS request to blank the discussion and have it archived in the history. Normally articles that have been through AfD once, deleted, recreated, and then deleted by a second AfD would have a difficult time surviving a third nomination, and the general standard at Articles for Creation is not to create a new article if you think it has less than 50% chance of surviving an AfD.

Since you are an registered user, you have the ability to create the page yourself if you think that the issues that were brought up in the original AfDs was addressed, and you do not need to go through AfC. TonyBallioni (talk) 20:39, 1 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hi! I noticed your recent edits in adding the GMO Protests section to this article. I have reverted these edits as mercola.com is not a reliable source. I think you can rewrite your edits to rely on the Washington Times source alone. I also have a concern that you have just created Vani Hari and perhaps have given undue weight in featuring her protest at the 2012 DNC. - Neonorange (talk) 20:54, 13 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Neon, thanks for your review. I noted that you removed the Vani Hari GMO protest from the 2012 DNC article. I think it's relevant because of a) the high volume of natl media attention and controversy that her GMO labeling protest generated, and b) her protest was a milestone event in the career of an increasingly influential figure in the healthy foods movement. My inclusion of Hari's protest in the 2012 DNC page was not intended to "promote" this individual or her cause, but rather to objectively note a key passage in a notable person's career. In any event, I will graciously accept your verdict. I'll get to work on the Mercola MD refs.

Good job! The next step would be to try to find articles that can link to this one, as for now this article is an "orphan".

BTW :) check out this page for help on removing the orphan tag. After editing a few pages to include bridgette in them u can just delete the orphan tag yourself! Hello, I'm BracketBot. I have automatically detected that your edit to Ronald Burkle may have broken the syntax by modifying 1 "[]"s. If you have, don't worry: just edit the page again to fix it. [edit]

An article that you wrote (Tracey Jackson) has come across as fairly promotional in tone, partially because it was sourced by sources that would be considered primary sources at best and did not really have anything that would give notability. I have to ask: were you paid to create the article? If so, then you really need to make sure to post this on your userpage so that there is transparency throughout the entire thing. I noted that you wrote you were a freelance writer on your userpage. I know that a lot of freelance writers take gigs for writing Wikipedia articles, but if you do this then you do need to specify that you do (on occasion) work as a paid editor. Now I won't lie - it is tough being a paid editor because you will be under far more scrutiny than someone who was not a paid editor, but if you are a paid editor and say that you are not then that reflects more poorly than if you'd said you were. I hate posting that, but I've had multiple instances where someone claimed they weren't but it was discovered that they were and they ended up getting blocked because of it.

Now regardless of whether you are paid or not, I would like you to look over the guidelines on neutrality (WP:NPOV), reliable sourcing (WP:RS), and basic notability (WP:GNG). The article for Jackson was written in a way that did come across as being promotional and this, along with the sourcing, kind of actually made her seem a lot less notable than she actually ended up being. I'd recommend that when you're writing about a person's accomplishments in books or film that you just list this in a filmography or bibliography section as opposed to writing a full out section. The reason I highlight this is that the sourcing you used was all primary and while you didn't actually write "buy her book it's awesome" the way you quoted the primary sources and phrased everything as a whole did come across as saying this. This is part of the reason why paid editing is somewhat discouraged because to put it bluntly, you're writing things that the client wants you to write and it's difficult to tell the hand that feeds you "no, this wouldn't fly on Wikipedia" when they have fairly specific guidelines on what they want added and how they want it phrased. I had a friend who was paid to write promotional articles in various websites (not Wikipedia) and she told me how specific they would be.

However that said, I do see where you're also here to write about things that interest you so I don't want to seem too negative. It's just that the style, tone, and sourcing for Jackson's article needed a lot of work to fit guidelines and because it came across as an instance of paid editing I did feel like I should direct you towards the information about paid editing because if you are then you'll need to follow guidelines very, very closely. Even if you aren't, your edits do kind of give off the paid editing vibes and that's an even more important reason to try to brush up on the guidelines so that you don't give off this impression. Hi Tokyogirl79,

Thanks for your detailed notes re paid editing! I very much appreciate your overview and insights, and the time you took to paint so clear a picture. I am duly enlightened! I'm a casual and occasional Wikipedia contributor, and periodically write articles for my own enjoyment and edification. However, I was paid to write the article about Tracey Jackson, largely because she, like so many others, have little or no experience navigating Wikipedia's labyrinthine content rules and systems. Smart people can and often do disagree regarding their interpretations of Wikipedia's content guidelines, which is probably why Wikipedia is so useful a resource in the first place, and I would not want to either deliberately or unwittingly undermine its value to users in any way. I wrote the Tracey Jackson article independently and only incorporated information that I was able reference to online sources. I believe/believed that Tracey Jackson is notable because she is a published author by major imprints, produced screenwriter, and creator of TV shows that have a place, whether large or small, in popular culture, all of which can be referenced. Before I wrote the article, I found numerous approved articles on Wikipedia about writers who have similar backgrounds. Some fairly incendiary comments were posted by a user on the Edit page of the Tracey Jackson article that appear to have engendered significant -- and justifiable -- concern among Wikipedia editors. I have no involvement with that user or her history with the article's subject. I trust that the Wikipedia community will take a measured approach and address the comments and article independent of each other. By the way, I read your edits and noted that you wrote that Jackson "currently operates Glenn Horowitz Bookseller in New York." Per my original submission, I wrote that she is married to Glenn Horowitz, who owns and operates Glenn Horowitz Bookseller, which I think is notable because he and his business activities have been featured by such media as the NY Times. Thank you again for your thoughtful insights. Here's to creating better articles and a better Wikipedia! 71.95.133.253 (talk) 21:00, 7 January 2015 (UTC)bbmusicman[reply]

Dear bbmusicman,
I appreciate the genial tone of this exchange and I actually went in and corrected the info about Jackson and Glenn Horowitz Bookseller to reflect what you originally wrote, that she is married to the person who operates that company. I assume the "incendiary" comment you are referring to is my explanation of why I deleted something I had added to the page -- because I was threatened by Jackson and her husband. That is 100% true and I have the e-mails to prove it (which I have sent to legal at wikimedia dot org). Very poor form on their part, but you are correct that it is a separate issue and the legal folks at Wikipedia have been in touch with me as to how to proceed in light of the litigation threats. They actually have a fund for contributors who get (unjustly) sued for Wikipedia editing to help with legal costs, which is nice to know if I do get sued! Sorry for all the headaches -- now that the page contains no erroneous information and is not written in promotional prose, I will not edit the page in any way going forward (and you can feel free to pass this information on to Jackson if you so choose).
